A woman on the staff aggressively grilled me with multiple questions on if my service dog was "a real service dog" and demanded that I pick her up and carry her throughout the store because "the cats come first." Even though she very clearly had a leashed marked in bold letters service dog, I didn't have her vest on that day because they are heavy and hot. It was a very hostile, confrontational, and uncomfortable conversation. Within a few minutes, I got my stuff and checked out and as I got to the register the woman asked me if someone had talked to me about the dog yet. I felt the floor was unstable for all the shelves of stuff and the loosely draped plastic that was keeping the insulation just inches from my head was hazardous. I saw a game that had a price of $2 on it and decided I would give it a try. Went to the register to find out it wasn't the correct price because they don't price their games. A fun treasure hunt! The staff is super helpful when you drive up with a donation. They come out to the car or truck and carry your items in for you. Then I go in to the store and hunt for some new treasures. Furniture prices are reasonable when they have their 1/2-off sales. I don't know if I've ever been more appalled at poor customer service as I was with this place. Nothing is priced. Their stock is absolutely overflowing. You have to dig for anything. You can spend hours and hours and hours in here looking for things and find some wonderful treasures. However, when you get to the desk to find out how much all of your time and digging is worth, you might want to take out a second mortgage on your house. Puzzles and games missing pieces, parts to random appliances will cost you from $5 to $10 apiece. And there's no haggling, the woman at the front desk is downright rude if you have the audacity to question a price or give any indication of incredulity when she throws an astronomical price for the item they got for free. This is not a charity folks...they claim to be a non profit, but there is nothing posted about any good they do with your hard-earned cash. .It is a racket. Don't even bother looking in the buckets of clothes they have out front. I picked up one article of clothing and it was soaking wet. There's a giant sign that says if you buy one or it's $15, so get ready to dig through their garbage looking for $15 worth of old clothes, because they won't sell you one article for less than $15. read more

I've lived in the area my whole life and only found the ShareHouse this year. What a deficit I've been living with from not knowing this place existed. There's just such a diverse variety of items from vintage pieces to hardware. We took our kids there to select Christmas gifts for each other and will be doing the same for birthdays in the future as well. Highly recommend! read more

My friends and I, all seniors, one disabled and one less abled, were confronted today, November22, 2023, by a young man claiming to be a Share House manager over a parking issue. I attempted to explain to him, but he immediately raised his voice, put his hands up pushing them towards me insinuating I was a threat. Like, back off! I'm 74 years old, 145 pounds - 30 to 40 less than him. I'm an associate member of Veterans for Peace. He escalated a minor problem, easily and quickly resolved by talking calmly and offering assistance. I attempted to walk by him to find someone reasonable to talk to, he physically blocked me every time I moved, again insinuating I was somehow attacking him. Other employees came near. They were quizzical, certainly not supportive of him, but they weren't going to contradict him possibly endangering their employment. In the end, this took way more time to resolve in a loud and ugly manner, bringing five Share House employees from their posts, to all stand in front of me, to 'restrain' a 74 year old senior? Laughable if not so ugly. If this an indication of Share House management attitudes and actions, I warn others, especially dis and less abled, be aware and prepared for confrontation. Bullies don't learn quickly or easily. Especially when supported unquestioningly by their fellows. I warn Share House, this young man needs to be mentored in humility and listening or Share House will certainly have more unnecessary conflict. I am really disappointed. A few years ago you could go in and get reasonably priced items and the prices were posted. NOW when you go up to the counter where the woman working determines the price and I think it depends on what mood they're in. I took up a fry pan that was at least 20 years old, but still useable. I expected $3.00, maybe $4.00 tops. She told me $10! When I said no, I would only pay $3.00 she was visibly ANGRY, took the pan, took a price gun, set the price and stamped in front of me. My wife and I drove out to this crappy hole in the wall resale shop on black friday 11/27/2020. This place can ruin your day with the rude owner/manager that runs this place. No prices on alot of the stuff. Aisles are filled with junk you are afraid you might fall. Health Department should close the place down (it is really that unsafe). If you are looking for a family, friendly place to take your young children children, skip this one. My four year-old had to use the restroom and my wife was denied access to their bathroom, leading to her defecating in her pants in the parking lot. This is one that was no accident. They have shopping carts for children and a massive section of toys for kids of all ages and no consideration for those children other than them choosing toys for their parents to buy. Zero heart. Cashier barks at customers for no reason (very crabby). Many (if not most) items aren't priced, so that when you get to the counter, the cashier will arbitrarily price items according to her whim. Selection isn't well-organized. The items that are actually priced are overpriced (especially considering how close to Kiwanis they are). Pros--This place is massive, just crammed with everything you could imagine. Give yourself ample time to explore. Parking lot is easy to get in and out of. Lots of vintage and knick-knack items. They have baskets you can carry around to put stuff in as you shop. Cons--Very few items have prices on them, but I found that because there is so much inventory they need to sell, the prices given at the register are very reasonable. One very rude and unhelpful staff member (or maybe owner?) Man in a red shirt that two other workers said might be able to price items. I asked the price of 4x4 inch tiles. Was told to ask price at the checkout. Asked for rough idea of price for that size tile. How many? 50. $5. Mentioned that Menard's had them for 8 cents each (plain white). Was told to go to Menard's. Asked price of 50 12 inch tiles. $20. Of 100 tiles. $20 for ANY number of tiles. A house full? Some rude reply. I commented on the lack of logic here. (Habitat for Humanity has prices marked for everything - 10 cents for 4" tile, $1 for 12" tile, and X's on floor, and signs about masks...) The man was not wearing a mask even around his neck, working both inside and outside with two other workers. He kept approaching me. I kept backing off. I finally said to stay 6' away. Another rude response from him. I then asked the price of the oldest microwave oven, small, from 70s, lacking turntable. $20. I said we were looking on behalf of four Chinese students with no income, stranded in the US due to the virus, whose Chinese-American friend was trying to help them (as a total stranger). (We work as volunteers with her for Salvation Army food pantry). He said Chinese people have lots of money. I said Restore had them for $10 last I looked/ He said to drive to Restore. I said we biked and did not drive. Another nasty reply. (I think I was wearing my helmet - it is over an hour's trip each way from westside A2). I finally went upstairs to checkout, waited in a line that had no Xs on the floor or signs about spacing, and was told to bring the microwave oven up. I asked if I also had to bring it back down and she offered to go look at it. $6. Same price for one without a knob. The newer ones were $20. I suggested that our Chinese-American friend get the $6 model for the students, but would hesitate to recommend the place to anyone else. We were made to feel like customers were nuisances that should be treated badly enough that they went away quickly. After reading the terrible reviews, I realized that there were no Blacks or Asian-Americans in the store (unlike Habitat). And that it is not just one 'bad apple' working there. read more

I love thrifting, and I was in need of a few very specific items for my apt that I couldn't find at the other local thrift stores. A friend suggested The Share House, and as I walked in, I thought, "Heaven!!" For furniture, this is the place to go. Within 10 minutes, I found everything I was looking for, but I stayed an extra 90 minutes because as I said, I love thrifting. The staff is SUPER kind. They allowed me to keep my many many items up front, helped be bring them to my car, and even helped me pack my car. Finally, there are two cats, who are the absolute sweetest. So there is no marked pricing on most everything at The ShareHouse. Purchasing anything involves just taking it to the checkout desk and dealing with this really rude, aggressive, unfriendly woman whose job it is to just make up a price on the spot and announce it loudly for everyone else in line to hear. You're then stuck in this super embarrassingly awkward situation where if it's not in the range of what you were willing to pay then you have the option to just mumble that you don't want it, leave it there on the counter and slink off in total shame OR agree to the overpriced amount this lady completely pulls out of the air just to save yourself humiliation. Haggling is met with a resoundingly abrupt negative response. Don't even try. She's literally like The Soup Nazi of thrift stores. It's quite honestly such a turn off and a really unpleasant way to shop. The space has also seen much better days. It is large and there is lots of stock (that you will need to have the time to sift through and hunt for treasures amongst a lot of junk) but it's incredibly run down and is quite honestly unbearably stifling hot on summer days. They have outdoor items, some in a shed and some just out in the open air but there's stuff stacked everywhere and it's really difficult to get at or see properly. There are people working outside on the dock where donations are also dropped but apparently they're not authorized to give you a price on anything so if the item you want is too big to carry, you have to trudge back to the less than friendly lady, line up with everyone else, explain what the outdoor item is and where it is and have her come down and deal with it all and then go through the make up a price on the spot thing and ugh, it's just a whole rigmarole. You can also only return things (even if they don't work) for store credit. We bought both a BBQ and a carpet cleaner that came to quite a bit. Neither worked properly when we got them home and then we had to go to the trouble of hauling them back there and then being stuck with this large credit. When I did finally get around to visiting again and using it, the checkout lady announced loudly and rudely, "well you held on to THAT for a long time didn't you??!!". Um yeah, thinking MAYBE you could have gone with "so glad you found something else!" or even "so sorry we sold you two faulty items in the first place!" or you know, quite literally anything else that didn't come across as completely acerbic. It seems by reading other reviews here that a lot of people have had the same negative experiences but it seems nobody at The ShareHouse has seen fit to take the feedback onboard and make any changes. Also, all the items for sale are donations. I tried researching online where the proceeds from all these free items that The ShareHouse receives and sells go but the only information I could find is that The ShareHouse is a non profit organization. My advice would be to avoid this place and try Kiwani's on Jackson instead, where everyone is super friendly, the space is clean and well organized, everything is clearly priced and they're upfront with what charities and social agencies you're supporting with your purchases. read more

Several of the other reviewers pointed out that the staff is rude, and that is absolutely true. This used to be a Christian-based organization but the new operators certainly do NOT conduct themselves in a very Christian-like or even friendly manner. The last time in there I was so offended that I will never go back. It's a shame, since it used to be such a nice place to go and shop around. Plus, they seem to have given up on the entire downstairs, where I used to be able to sometimes find electronics, tools, or other things a guy might need. Now it's basically a big junk pile, nothing is priced, you can't even tell what they have, and what you do see is certainly of no value. I suspect anything good that gets donated is siphoned off by the owners and put on Craigslist. None of the staff were wearing masks when I visited on Friday, July 10th. When I asked one of the staff people why the employees were not wearing masks, I was told that it was not a mandate until July 13th and that she was "not going to live in fear". She went on to belittle me for wearing a mask, and told me she doesn't believe any of this COVID stuff. This has been by far my favorite thrift store in Ann Arbor. I have not had that experience ever and find them kind of amusing. They rescued a couple of kitties that were left out back of the store during a bitter cold snap. They live in the store now. We love this store and make it part of our routine to go there when I go to Ann Arbor to see my daughter. We were so excited about visiting today because we haven't been there since the pandemic began. I cannot tell you how shocked, saddened and upset we were to see only one employee wearing a mask. We saw at least 5 employees not wearing masks. The customers all had masks on despite nothing posted at the entrance. We do not feel comfortable patronizing a place that ignores CDC guidelines. At various times I've hit all the thrift stores in the county in one day looking for something or other specific, and I do find this place charges up to twice as much as others. I would first like to say, that anyone who thinks that anyone who works at the ShareHouse is anti-Semitic, is either delusional, or wants attention. I am Jewish and am very loud about it. No one at the ShareHouse has ever treated me less than friendly. I go there about three times a week and spend time, not just looking for cool stuff, but also visiting and chatting with the workers. I absolutely love everyone who works there! This is a great place to find treasures...although I hate to put it out there because I want it all to myself! read more

The share house is dedicated to making an enemy out of their customers. The staff is incredibly rude, and literally go out if their way to make sure you'll never return. Share House is a fantastic experience if you want food for thought about one of life's great questions: "How can a staff be so foul, unhelpful, and aggressively rude and stay in business?"
