This morning I was in Jacksonville on a day trip for my job, and took a break to find some breakfast. I had resigned myself to fastfood, but driving around looking for a place to eat, I drove past The Sheik Sandwich Shop (home of the Camel Rider). I wouldn't have tagged this as a breakfast spot, but the cars in the parking lot and lined up in the drive thru gave it away as a good place to try. I'm glad I did. I had the breakfast pita and a side of grits, both of which were very good. The breakfast pita is 2 eggs, cheese, and choice of bacon, ham, or sausage. It was packed, and would have been enough for breakfast without the grits. My total w coffee and tax was under 7 bucks. Service was friendly and fast. I'd eat here again for sure. read more

One day at work I saw my coworkers coming in with some paper bags full of breakfast. I swathes were eating a breakfast sandwich... in a pita? Well, apparently, they ordered from The Sheik and we happy about it. I had to try it because they just looked so satisfied. One morning before work I decided I had to go and get me a greasy pita breakfast goody. The menu looked pretty decent with decent enough prices. I opted for a sausage egg and cheese breakfast pita and my boyfriend got buttered toast. They have two options; you can go inside and order or drive thru. We decided to go inside since I didn't know what exactly I wanted and I didn't want to hold up the line. I've seen the drive thru get pretty busy as I've passed by before. My sandwich was the bomb! I mean, the pita was perfectly toasted with a yummy scrambled egg omelets full of gooey cheesy goodness and yummy sausage mixed in. It melted in my mouth after the initial crunch of the outer shell. My boyfriend on the other hand did not like how they over buttered his toast. Next time we will be sure to ask them to go easy on the butter. Breakfast was about $8 total for my sandwich and his toast and some orange juice. I definitely heard wonderful things about the camel rider, so next time I go in I want to try that as my lunchtime go-to. read more

Good, Cheap, Fast. Unfortunately it seems to be declining over the years. As others have mentioned my past few visits were bad with really old tasting fry oil- left an almost chemical like taste in the fries. I don't think they have given the dining/restroom area a deep clean in over 20 years. read more

My dad is a big fan of this place, apparently he's been going there since he was in high school, so when he suggested we stop there for lunch I happily obliged. One thing my dad failed to mention before I ordered was that he only orders one thing, a camel rider, and has NEVER tried anything else. On my first trip I had a bacon, egg and cheese rider and it was good. On my second trip I had a roast beef rider and it was not good....the meat was not roast beef, but rather chopped up beef that was really chewy and greasy. On my third trip I went with just a simple turkey rider and it was ok, as a turkey sandwich should be. The ONLY good thing I had at every trip there was the french fries....you can't go wrong with seasoned fries! I'll probably be back to The Sheik just for the fact that my dad is still a fan...maybe I should just order what he orders because he;s never complained once about it. I think people should experience The Sheik if nothing more than for the fact that it's been in Jacksonville FOREVER so they are doing something right I guess, just don't have high expectations.....maybe that was my first mistake. read more

This is my second and last visit. Today I had to drive right by the place and was hungry. Bad move..... Like my first time the restaurant is dirty. Upon arrival I asked if they had served a bunch of pigs this morning and the woman behind the counter confirmed it. There were scraps of paper all over the floor. Four people were behind the counter no one was at the counter. Nobody was sitting at the tables. They were empty. I ordered eggs over easy, sausage and white toast. I specified I didn't want sausage that had been cooked to death on the grill for an hour. The sausage was huge too big for my taste but good. One of my egg yolks was broken not over easy. The real problem was an off-putting taste on the toast. I'm not sure if it was the toast or if the fake butter was rancid. I was afraid to eat it. It overpowered the egg yolk flavor. My hope was eggs over easy with toast to soak up the yolk. That is one of my favorite breakfast meals. A simple request I thought. FAIL... The waitress came out and wiped down the clean tables but left most of the trash on the floor. Definitely an experience not worth $8.02. we have plenty of better options in town. read more

I've been at the sheik a couple of times but I always ordered the breakfast. Today I decided on the much ballyhooed Camel Rider. I have to say that I thought it was going to be iffy at first glance because it has Bologna on it. As a personal aside, I'd rather eat sauteed cat at Mai Lings Express than choke down the most vile of lunch meat. But somehow it works! Maybe it is the pita. Maybe it is the dressing. Maybe it is the fact I was expecting a hot sandwich and this is like a middle east sub. I hate Bologna but love the Camel Rider. Go figure. read more

A Jacksonville Legend and True Gem. Step back into the 70s with their decor and sandwich shop feel. The Sheik is always consistent, you know what you're going to get here. Fresh food, smiling employees and a fabulous experience. My most favorite thing on the menu is the BLT Rider. Super meaty, juicy and simple. Bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo. If you're on a diet or health consciences, don't go here. This place isn't for you. It's too tasty and delicious to watch the calories. And the cherry lime aid is great, so refreshing on a hot day. If you want legit steaming hot fresh cooked eggs, deep fried tater tots, smoked sausage- this is the best place to eat. They also have a signature steak and onion mix that you can get in a pita by itself or with eggs and cheese. If you've never tried it- you owe it to yourself. The breakfast sandwiches are cooked fresh to order and usually within 5 minutes or so you are eating. It's soooo good but probably really bad for you, though everything is fresh so you don't have all the preservatives associated with typical fast food. I believe this is the original store. Either this unit or the one on Main street. I just love the camel riders. Everything from the bread to the combo of meats. You can't get much better travel food then a sandwich in a pouch. The stuff stays inside and not on your outside. The camel rider is also a Jacksonville sandwich. Born and bread here. Don't even try ordering it in another town they might just throw you out of the place. After all a good sandwich is my go to meal. When in doubt of what to eat I will always run to a good sandwich, sub, gyro, grinder, or the best a Camel Rider. read more

I'll start by saying I am a breakfast restaurant enthusiast. This place really shocked me with the quality and quantity of food for the price point. I stopped by to get a quick filling breakfast as I had long day ahead of me. I ordered the breakfast platter with scrambled eggs, grits toast and bacon. 7 bucks!!! That was amazing. To make my visit better my food was ready no less than five minutes after ordering. Food was hot fresh and like I stated before the amount of food was great. Enough to the point where if I wanted to eat half now and half later I'd still be full on both servings. I have to calm down. Just thinking of the name of this restaurant has me hyper. We had just eaten lunch when I saw The Shiek and was trying to convince the both of us that we were hungry. The Shiek has it all. A giant sign with a sabre. Hot and cold deli and grilled AND fried sandwiches. Staff that seem so happy that I want to work there including a lady who has worked for them since the inception over 30 years ago. And they have a sandwich called Camel Rider. Nothing more really needs to be said. I had the Camel Rider and it was surpriseing because I didnt know it was served cold. I was ready for a hot sandwich but was indeed pleasantly surprised. It is made with simple yet homebaked tasting bread, ham, salami, bologna, cheese, lettuce tomato, onions, and dressing. What a delight. I didn't mention the mayo that would typically come on the Camel Rider because mayo is worthless and destructive to both food and people :) My girlfriend ordered the Steak Sack - a pita stuffed with slices of steak with grilled onions and green peppers with melted cheese. I guess camel riders in the desert sometimes need a philly cheesesteak. While we were ordering there was a middle aged gentleman who was talking with the lady who had worked there for so long. I heard him mention that this was the first time he had been in for many years. He told her she had kicked out he and his friends severeal times and they would always go back the next. Family owned for 50 years and this location has been here for 34...and for good reason. GREAT FREAKING FOOD!! There are a lot of places around who serve camel riders (salad in a sandwich in a pita) but none are not as tender and flavorful. The steak rider is extra tender and well marinated. Seasoning salt on the fries is optional, but extra yummy. I just moved to Texas and there in nothing like it there, so this is a must do every time I come home. On a staycation this week and decided I wanted to do 3-4 iconic southside sandwiches for lunches this week. First up was the Camel Rider with a limeade. Even tho it is "Jville's Sandwich", I have not had one in at least 20 years. I had forgot how those simple ingredients work! One of the best uses for american cheese and bologna there is. The veggies were so fresh and the pita soft and tender. Mine could have used a little more dressing but the tomatoes were juicy so it was fine. The previous times I've enjoyed The Sheik, I skipped the burgers to partake in their pitas. After work today I decided to finally hunker down and pick up a Giant Burger combo (5.35 for a Giant Burger, large fries, and a large drink). The burger was a decent size, but the name is misleading. It was fresh and tasty, but I've had better. Plus, it made me wish I got a Pita. It's ok Sheik, I still love you. If you're in the mood for a burger, I'd probably look elsewhere. If your looking for a mean pita sandwich, then you've come to the right place. Get the steak pita with swiss! YUM! read more
