JUST like Dr. Indiana Jones combing through the jungles seeking his ancient museum artifacts, I was navigating the curvy wilds of the Jacksonville Southpoint area, located near I-95 and JTB. The best things in life require some effort to build your appetite, and whereas I did not collect a golden idol like Dr. Jones, I was rewarded instead with a cheerful new friend and one of the absolute FRESHEST sandwiches in JAX! Nestled between the sparse woods and surrounding offices you will find happy, loyal diners who fill Hollywood Heroes and Subs each lunchtime to the point where the line stretches out the door. I had just seen the last of the lunch crowd smiling and saying goodbye for the day to our energetic and upbeat host, Founder, sandwich artist and Jacksonville native Kevin Porter, an actor turned restaurateur -- known for roles including "Lazer" in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, plus appearances in Daredevil and General Hospital. Something that cannot be "acted" around was his genuine welcome and desire to roll out the red Hollywood carpet for all who make the journey (yes, it's a REAL red carpet)!! This sweet shop is the perfect size, and has a significant amount of Hollywood memorabilia all around to keep you engaged while chatting with Kevin as he works his magic. And what he produced was a treasure of cheese and meats that made me forget about whatever might have been chasing me through those woods to get there! J/K In between wonderful conversation with Kevin, each bite of my MASSIVE "The Towering Inferno" hot hero (pepperoni, Genoa salami, cappy and melted provolone) on fresh baked Village Bread made me realize just how huge and delicious this thing was. Kevin promised that the one pictured is exactly what every customer will get...he prides himself on highly generous portions at fair prices...and man, did he deliver!! I would have been completely satisfied with HALF, but NO!!!! There sat its twin, begging for sacrifice to the stomach Gods. I was only too happy to oblige! The owner Kevin = engaging, friendly, talented with his craft, makes you feel like you drove through the woods to come home to your happy place. Love this place! The subs are delicious and generously stuffed. I'm not sure what I had, I told him to make me one of his favorites ... I think it was the bada-bing, whichever it was Fantastic! I hate that I forgot which one he said it was because it was amazing, but I'm looking forward to trying them all to figure it out. The owner and staff are all happy to help with any questions or suggestions and all seem very happy to be there. This little gem is located in a large office building in the south point business complex, but super easy to get in and out because it's on outside of the building by main entrance with lots of parking. Ummm is this a scam today was my first time ordering after reading all of the wonderful reviews. I ordered the Goodfella which said MEATBALLS and pepperoni and I got bread with some broken up ground beef. So DRY that I trashed it. I also ordered a bag of chips and a brownie in which I was charged for but the receipt on my delivery bag is missing the Brownie????? And I did not receive it Never AGAIN!!!!!! I have been talking about getting to Hollywood Heroes and Subs for awhile now that I'm back in the office more and I know this will not be my last time. I ordered online which was very easy going with a 12" Baba Bing. Once arrived for pick up I loved what I saw the staff was so friendly and the owner was just great. Chatting with customers and he really seemed to know a lot of the people there and if he didn't he for sure treated you like it wasn't your first time and you were a regular. Pick up was quick and easy and once I got into my sub it looked and tasted great. Loaded with the delicious meat I could as for a customized with the toppings of my liking. I loved how fresh it was but also wasn't too heavy either. I could eat my full sub and not feel like I had to take a nap in the back of the office after. I am luck to work so close to Hollywood Heroes and Subs and for sure can see myself being a regular in no time! read more

Stopped in for lunch with my sister on Saturday. Service was friendly and entertaining. Got to try The Bear and the Bada Bing. Both were SO GOOD. Cannot wait to return and try more things! Atmosphere is casual and parking is easy on the weekend. I can't say how it is during the week because it is in an office complex but the parking lot is large. This place has been on my "must-try" list since this past summer! After seeing fellow Jax Elite James D's glowing review here on Yelp and a new, fun and quirky Jax foodie share it on Hollywood Hero's Instagram page (@celsjax), I was sold. I literally hopped in the car and drove over. I'm actually really glad we came in for dinner instead of lunch. My boyfriend and I got to chat with Kevin (the owner), who's super conversational and friendly -- we both enjoyed that a lot. I was told lunch can get insanely busy, so going at dinner time was nice. It gave us a chance to get a little one-on-one menu rundown (which subs are the most popular, which ones are Kevin's personal faves, etc.). The shop is tucked slightly off the beaten path, but honestly? I kinda like it that way. It gives it that hidden-gem vibe. I ordered the Towering Inferno, which has "all the hot meats." As someone who loves medium-to-hot spice, this one hit that perfect middle ground -- flavorful with just enough kick without being overwhelming. Even if you enjoy more of a mild spice - you could handle this sub. I picked exactly the sub I thought I'd love... and boy, did I ever. Next time I'll go for the 12-inch instead of the 6 so I can save half for the next day. Prices here are super reasonable, especially for Jax. I grabbed jalapeño kettle chips and a soda from the fridge, while my better half went for a hot 6-inch "Leading Man" sub with Doritos and a Coke Zero. We both loved our subs so much we had to order a third one to split (I know, total BigBacks over here). We tried a cold sub this time -- the Bada Bing -- and it was just as delicious. All three subs were fantastic, but I'm definitely more of a hot sandwich girl, so the Towering Inferno still takes the crown for me. It has its own special sauce -- tangy with a little kick -- that really ties it all together. Can't recommend this place enough. Hidden gem status: confirmed. The second thing you'll notice is that the dining room and kitchen area are both really clean as a whistle and there are all these cool movie posters in the wall. If you look closely, you might see the owner in one of the posters. How did you get the name Hollywood Heroes? Well, the owner lived in Jacksonville and opened up several of the Larry's giant sub locations, then he sold them and moved to LA became an actor for the next 25 years. When it came time to raise his daughter, he decided he wanted to come back to Florida to give her a true southern upbringing. He chose the menu, and it is layered with some phenomenal choices. Plus he will add exactly what you want on it, and because I ate inside and talked to him while he was in a slow spot, he even gave me a free drink. Regardless, you can tell he really enjoys his work and his customers. Well, if you've seen any of my reviews, you know this is a portrait where I describe the food . Since I was dining by myself, I can only give you one item that I tried. Sweet Tea - good, great, made with Southern Charm. Lazer - the sandwich was on the hot side of the menu, and it was fantastic. Layered with ham, turkey, and top with provolone cheese. I also added lettuce and tomato, some mayo and I was in love. Hollywood Heroes and Subs could have easily coasted on the novelty of its celebrity owner. A sandwich shop on Salisbury Road in Jacksonville, owned by actor Kevin Porter, best known as "Lazer" in Dodgeball. You half expect a gimmick. But I'm happy to report, it's not a gimmick at all. The subs are made to order. The bread comes from the beloved Village Bakery, the meats and vegetables sliced fresh each morning. The operation is clean, precise, and refreshingly earnest. I started with the "Lazer," the shop owner's namesake sandwich. A classic ham and turkey sub, melted provolone, ordered "all the way" with lettuce, tomato, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, and a splash of Italian dressing. A sandwich I've made a hundred times at home, but never like this. The bread was perfectly toasted, giving it that golden crust outside and a warm, pillowy interior. Balanced, simple, and exactly right. Maybe it's the ingredients, or maybe it's just that Kevin found the right rhythm between nostalgia and precision. Then came the Towering Inferno, their version of an Italian: pepperoni, Genoa salami, capicola, provolone, also ordered "all the way." This one had a bit more edge, the meats giving a gentle heat that built just enough to register, but never overpowered. The lettuce and tomato stayed cool, crisp, and essential. It is, without exaggeration, one of the better Italian subs I've had in this city. It helps that Kevin Porter is also a generous host. Business was light when I visited, so we sat down and chatted about his time in Hollywood, his Jacksonville roots, and how he ended up back here building sandwiches instead of stunt sequences. He's got the kind of story that makes you lean in. In fact, I enjoyed the conversation so much that Kevin will be my guest on the 100th episode of my podcast, Eat Your Content. My husband and I stopped in during a slower time (3pm) so we were cheerily welcomed by the owner and sandwich maker Kevin (he was in the movie Dodgeball!). Upon his recommendation we ordered the towering inferno and the chicken salad subs. Both were delicious. The chicken salad was just the way I like it simple and tasty. But to me the bread is what can make or break a sandwich and theirs is ordered daily from a local bakery so it was fresh and spot on. What an awesome experience! My DH, DS and I decided to visit Hollywood Heroes and Subs on Saturday (Valentine's Day) after my DH brought home a sub from here during the week. Kevin, the Owner, was behind the counter and immediately recognized my DH, greeting him like you would a friend. We placed our order up at the counter and grabbed a seat. Side note: super clever way of naming your order while encouraging conversation is the question at the register. Today's was: What's your favorite Rom-Com? Since I was the last to order, we went with mine, which is "You've Got Mail." Drawing from the owner's years of experience in the movie industry in LA, this sparked a lively conversation of movie trivia, which was so fun! Our subs were delivered quickly. We ordered the Bada Bing, the Leading Man and the Godfather. All were delicious, featuring fresh shredded lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The various deli meats on the sandwiches were all of good quality and delicious. My sandwich was The Bada Bing off of the Cold Villians menu. Featuring Ham, Salami, Bologna, Genoa Salami, Pepperoni & Provolone Cheese, this was a brightly flavored sandwich... super savory & exactly what I want when I order a sub. My son ordered The Leading Man off of the Hot Heroes side of the menu. This sub was a little more simple in ingredients featuring Turkey, Roast Beef & Provolone Cheese, but still held its own when it came to flavor. It should be noted that all of the subs were on delightfully fresh rolls and were the perfect pair for our orders. Lastly, my DH ordered The Godfather which had Ham, Salami, Bologna, Genoa Salami & Provolone Cheese elements. Again, delicious, fresh & flavorful! Not going to lie, I put off trying this place because I wasn't sure if it was a gimmick or not. After trying it, I'm upset that I put it off for so long. Wife and I stopped in at 330 on a Monday after getting some Christmas shopping done. Was greeted by Kevin with a huge smile. After a few minutes of conversing, you could tell he was genuine. He was really excited for us to try his sandwiches. His wife was incredibly sweet as well. We got the Bada Bing togo, as we were going to split it. He told us to come back and try it while it's fresh. This dude LOVES sandwiches and has such a lovely family. When we left we left, I told my wife "I don't care if this sandwich is good or not, I'm coming back for that same experience. 20 minute car ride and finally got to eat it. The sandwich was fantastic. The menu is great so I didn't even have to think about that. We had a bada bing, a leading man, and a tuna that was toasted (technically off menu)! Everything was so incredibly fresh and honestly the perfect sub sandwich (or hero!). Very fresh ingredients, delicious bread, meats and cheese. I had the Raider which is roast beef and cheese, simple yet delicious. The owner was very friendly and obviously takes great pride in what he does. The posters and decor add a cool touch to the ambience.
