I always wanted to visit this restaurant but thought it was an expensive place. After reading few reviews realized it's worth it. We stopped by on our way back from Carpenteria, the view takes your breath away. We didn't have reservations but it was during lunch so we were seated right away. Lunch with family back on Friday, April 10 I still remember how perfect the weather was that day -- not too hot, not too cold, and the sunlight was soft and comfortable. It created such a relaxing atmosphere for lunch. It was my wife's and mother's first visit, and they both really enjoyed the ambiance. Honestly, the atmosphere made the food taste even better. We ordered the risotto with added chicken, along with mussels and a few other dishes. The risotto was creamy without feeling too heavy, and adding chicken made it much more satisfying. The only slight disappointment was the mussels. They were much smaller than expected -- probably not in season -- and there was barely any meat inside Still, the overall experience, atmosphere, and quality time with family made it a very enjoyable lunch. Food was so much better than I expected! Had the crunchy coconut shrimp as a shared app. Then red chowder and Seafood Spinach salad for entree. The salmon and shrimp were cooked perfectly! We've stopped here for lunch a couple of times and you can't beat the ambiance, right on the coast at Mussel Shoals. My wife decided she wanted to have her birthday dinner. The food is excellent, the service prompt, knowledgeable and friendly. I had the cioppino and although it was a different recipe than I'm used to, due to the high cost of crab (both Dungeness and Alaskan King) it was quite good. We had dinner, stayed the night and had lunch the next day. The scallops and the filter mignon were perfect last night. Their clam and mussel appetizer is excellent. Desserts are wonderful. This is our favorite place for creme brulee. For lunch, my wife enjoyed the garden burger. I had the excellent cod and chips with freshly made tartar sauce and coleslaw. My husband and I have eaten here for years and are never disappointed with the food quality. This time, we brought several family members with us. (Very very generous of us because it isn't cheap, but you get your money's worth, and dining waterfront at sunset is priceless). Our server was professional and knowledgeable about their excellent wine list. My caprese salad was fresh and tasty and their mashed potatoes are perfect. The Shoals is one of my favorite oceanside restaurants anywhere. I enjoyed dinner there again last night, and it reminded me how lucky I am to have it close to home. Open for lunch and dinner ( closed Mondays), it has indoor (is it raining?) And the oceanside outside tables. Service is quick, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The wine menu is compact, but offers a range of reasonably priced quality wines. Most are locally sourced. They also have a range of cocktails. The food menu offers a range of choices. My wife and I ate here about 15 years ago and had an outstanding meal. We were hoping they had maintained their delicious meals, but 15 years is a long time ago. Fortunately for us, they were just as good as our last visit. We had a reservation and were promptly seated at a window table with an amazing view of the ocean. Our server was very friendly and provided outstanding service. We started with some wine that was very good. Not the best I have ever had, but pretty good. I had a merlot and my wife had a sauvignon blanc. We ordered the two specials of the day. My wife had the filet mignon with fingerling potatoes and steamed vegetables. She really enjoyed her meal. I had a bite of her steak, and it was a very good cut of meat that was perfectly cooked. I ordered the seared scallops with cheesy risotto and steamed vegetables. The scallops were very large and perfectly cooked. The risotto was outstanding, and I really enjoyed the vegetables. They were slightly undercooked, but in a way that I really enjoyed. For dessert, we had the candied bananas with vanilla ice cream. It was out of this world good. If you are looking for a great meal with amazing views, this is the place. We are back ! Another amazing meal with the beautiful Ocean as our back drop. Once again Donna took amazing care of us . We had tasty wines hubby had the Pinot - Meiomi . I had Pinot Grigio - Di Bruno . Started with a creamy cup of Clam Chowder, lots of Yummy Clams. We ordered the Calamari as well . One of our favs . Hubby had the special -Halibut. We are regulars at this restaurant, great food but New Year's Eve Prime rib was the worst l have ever eaten, it was like eating rubber, we went with another couple that were regulars and l didn't want to make a seen. Touted as a fine dining experience in the area, configured I'd give it a try. Made reservation for 6:30 on Wednesday night to watch the sunset. Got there a little early and was promptly seated. Menu looked good, started out with a glass of Chardonnay before ordering. Our server gave us an overview of the specials which included a grilled swordfish and a risotto and mixed vegetables. We both ordered the special and settled in to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, the property does not face directly west, so there is no real view of the sunset. The swordfish was pretty good (a bit dry) and my seasonal vegetables were largely uncooked. The carrots in particular were so hard they were pretty much inedible. The flourless chocolate cake was a great ending. Parking is a bit of a problem as the Shoals restaurant is on bottom level of Colony Hotel and they share parking. Even when I got there early, the lot was full and I had to park way down the block. Expect to pay $50-$70 pp with a drink, appetizer, entree and dessert pre-tip. We ordered mussels, "shoe string" fries, and crunchy shrimp. It took 40 minutes to get the fries, which were cold and not shoestring fries as listed on the menu. A bit later we got the shrimp, which looked beautiful, but tasted tough. The sauce they were paired with was also funky, and tasted like it may have gone bad. The mussels arrived about 20 mins later, and were bland and watery. We were staying overnight at the Cliff House Inn and celebrated my hubby's birthday, with dinner at The Shoals Restaurant. Such a lovely location, right on the waters edge, where you can sit outside or indoors. We were pleasantly surprised by the food and service. We both had the mixed greens salad, he had the evenings 'special' filet, that was perfectly prepared for him, and I had the coconut shrimp, that were huge! 2026 Mother's Day Brunch was rediculously expensive at about $100 per person. The food was mediocre and we could have gotten the same quality at a cheap family restaurant, prices went up by $20 per person from what was advertised online in the previous month. Big mix of food ordered. Lamb chops, clams, pasta and more. Not one complaint from anyone. My steak seemed to be the highlight plate and many were jealous. Hadn't been here since my honeymoon long ago, when we ate and stayed in a premiere room. They did not disappoint 26 years later. Highly recommend and will not wait to return. read more

I had not been to this restaurant in over 30 years. They did not let me down. I went with a couple of friends. We had the seared scallops and risotto. The risotto was one of the best I've had. We also had the rack of lamb with fingerling potatoes. That was also excellent. The lamb did not disappoint and was cooked perfectly. Came here a few weekends ago as I had always heard it was amazing. Since the views here are so spectacular, I think people often disregard the true quality of the food since they are overtaken by the ambiance. I made a reservation (highly, highly recommended) and asked to be at one of the tables closest to the water at the time of my call. I also made this request online. When we arrived, we were told nothing was available and were seated at a long table far away with hardly any view. I saw a couple walk in and they were seated where I had requested! I asked the staff and they said "we had offered you that table." They most certainly did not. We had to wait until another table was finished to move because we weren't happy with where we were seated. The staff was acting like we were being difficult but then why allow for reservations with specific requests? Confusing. Being at the new table was a game changer; it was absolutely stunning... until a seagull was literally trying to swipe everything off of our table. As a matter of fact, the seagulls are well known by the staff and they were dive-bombing everyone! I felt like I was in a movie it was so weird. It was funny at first but then became overbearing and annoying. Our server was nice but kept forgetting simple requests. We ordered clam chowder-- no spoons, no salt, no pepper, etc etc. Had to wait forever for them to be brought and the soup was luke warm. Appetizers (mussels and calamari) and Caesar salad were decent, bread was very good. Entrees were lacking flavor and depth. Scallops and chop weren't cooked properly (good sear technique just wasn't there). We sadly just boxed them up not knowing what we would do with the food, it was that disappointing. We had a couple of desserts with espresso which were really fantastic. Also keep in mind that the dining area is central but below the hotel rooms. You can hear people's conversations above and see guests coming in and out with luggage. They have the guest ice machine next to where all the dining tables are so it was odd to see some random guy wearing pajamas loudly filling up a bag of ice while people are eating. I was very disappointed as this visit was highly anticipated and strongly recommended. I will not deny that the view is magnificent but the food is simply lackluster and in need of a makeover. It was a very expensive lesson learned, sadly. I would probably only come back for drinks and dessert. read more

I'm very sad writing this review, this was at one time, the best place in Ventura County to take your loved ones to, we just spent our 50th anniversary here, as we have done for the last 20 years.
