I stumbled on Hugo's on my way home to Santa Monica. It's a cozy retro vibe restaurant with take-out. I ordered a spinach omelet with whole wheat toast and hot coffee. Cost about $21.00. The food was extraordinary. The owner made me a fresh cup of coffee for the road. The omelet tasted like a real omelet. The coffee so tasty and aromatic. I would highly recommend this family diner. Such a great find! Was traveling up the 101, and its right off the freeway. Breakfast and lunch, we came in the middle of the day and had so much to choose from. My wife had corned beef hash, so good! The meat to potato ratio was right on point. I had the loco moco- not the norm. It wasn't hamburger, but more like teriyaki beef. We had a great brunch here!! My Husband had the loco moco. The flavors and meat were delicious. I had the Ruben and loved it. Service was perfect. Everyone was very helpful. My wife and I were in Carpinteria for 2 1/2 weeks and we got off the bus from LAX at Albertson's and headed across the street to Hugo's for some nourishment about 10 AM. Noon in Minneapolis. We sat down at one of the booths and I really wanted a draft beer. OK, no. I really wanted a Diet Coke from a dispenser. Nope. $8 for a beer and $3.50 for a can of soda. Water please. This was insanity. I ordered the tri-tip with fruit and my wife got the miso soup. It came out in about 8-10 minutes. We only had our water refilled once, and we had to ask. The place is Asian-fusian, so he tri-tip was like teriyaki and it was amazing. unfortunately, they don't toast the roll they put it on, so it really isn't a sandwich. There is no way you could eat this like a grilled cheese sandwich. It becomes almost comical, if not frustrating that you cannot get a bite of bread and meat and tomato in one swallow. I should give three stars, but the fruit was beautiful and the miso soup was tasty always and the meat was amazing. I almost wish they would just have an option of just the meat over cauliflower rice. Maybe they do and I did not see. The bread was a major let down. I would never go again, but people seemed to be enjoying their breakfast. read more

Service with a smile and good food to boot. It was relatively quiet I came in at around 10 am. Their smile comes across as genuinely happy for you to be there. I got a basic 2 sausage, egg,pancake order and the sausage was genuinely bursting with flavor eggs were yummy and pancakes were solid. In the middle of my breakfast a patron was leaving and the owners says see you tomorrow thank you. And I completely understand why someone would have such loyal customers. I really wanted to like this place. The people were friendly, the other customers all seemed to regulars, and it has a unique old school diner/ Asian restaurant vibe. Sadly, the food and prices kept it from getting a higher score. My biscuits and gravy looked and tasted canned. My companion's corned beef sandwich was okay but nothing exciting. We went here on a trip up the coast. The food was good and service was fast. The French toast was good.

Found this small fam owned restaurant by accident and decided to stop by for lunch. A bit overpriced in my opinion. 3 diff plates and 3 sodas $65. The service was okay, but I think the owner just kept staring. And then when we paid the tab she stood there and said" no tip? that's a scary customer." When she saw that we were tipping cash she said "ohh youre tipping cash? much better" which made me uncomfortable because she was just staring. Probably won't stop by again. For whatever reason, we ended up in Carpinteria (one of our favorite places on the 101!), and at Hugo's, an eating establishment we had never before patronized. What an absolute joy!! This place is worth a chance. I saw the bad reviews and the good. And we really wanted a standard breakfast spot so we came on a very light Friday morning. The lady working was so delightful and we had amazing service the entire time. After some regulars left it was just me and my two daughters - although someone came in to pickup a to-go order for the chilaquiles which I wish we got while in San Diego a few days ago - so that may be my breakfast tomorrow. The food. It's so good!! Let's talk about my plate - my standard breakfast order anywhere I go (pancakes, sausage, and eggs over medium with coffee). Eggs were perfect. The pancakes! Definitely scratch recipe and the edges were just crisp with a slight chew and the middle just lovely melt in your mouth deliciousness. The coffee was strong and good! The omelette was substantial - can you see the 1/2 inch thick avocado slices?? No skimping! And the fruit bowl had strawberries, grapes and super sweet melon. My daughter loved her omelette but couldn't finish it all. The fried rice was served with teriyaki sauce - my daughter loved it and brought the rest (because the serving was huge) to the beach for lunch. It had broccoli, bean sprouts, and tender pieces of chicken in the mix. This is what you hope for in a locally-owned diner that does both American and Asian cuisine. I've been to a spot in Quincy, CA that does American, Asian, and Mexican and it is ALL good. Don't let that deter you! We used to live in SB (now NorCal) but visit and stay in Carp and we will definitely be back. read more

What a pleasant surprise. We thought it may just be a breakfast place but so much more than that. The woman that owns restaurant really makes you feel welcome she remembered us on 2nd visit. Super friendly service from the owner. Very clean interior. Reasonable prices. We originally were going to get an omelette and that probably would have been a better option. Instead we shared the corned beef hash, with 2 eggs and toast. It had allot of very well done hash browns in it. Five years ago, I rated this restaurant with a three. But it's under new ownership and I think it is now a four. Everyone was friendly and helpful and kept our coffee coming. I had French toast was light and fresh. Also my husband and I shared a bowl of fruit which had a variety and was very good. He had eggs over easy, hashbrowns and bacon and said it was fine . I would come back as before. I wasn't sure I would. My husband said he wished he would've asked for hashbrowns crispy so next time. Everything was reasonably priced for breakfast. read more

Somewhat hidden at the end of a strip mall chock full of restaurant choices, Hugo's remains one quiet little place. In search of a tri-tip sando, they offered one. Reasonably priced, the the sando was done right, included a dill pickle and one side. I chose potato salad, and it was tasty. Several happy diners sat in the booths enjoying their lunch. Good food, good service, give Hugo's a try next time you were heading to Uncle Chens, Taco Bell, PB & J's or Rudy's. read more

There aren't a lot of places to eat in Carpinteria... and everyone in this place seems to know the owners - so that must be the reason for the good reviews. Because the food was just not great - or even OK. Walking in, it smelled like not fresh oil. The menu has a lot of items - but not much in the way of choice - if that makes sense... it's basically either eggs, sandwiches or - weirdly, Asian food on the back of the menu. If you don't want one of those three things - or want something a little more inspired, you're at the wrong place. I finally settled on a grilled cheese - that's how limited this menu is - and it was like something I'd make. Which isn't praise. The side of fries desperately needed ketchup, but the bottle on the table looked all watery and not clean. I couldn't use it. I just gave up on the entire "school cafeteria" looking plate. My SO ordered from the Asian side of the menu - Udon. Which was a bowl of messy looking veggies that I'm not sure belong in any bowl of Udon. I'm no expert on Udon, to be clear, but this didn't look at all like what I've seen before. And she said it wasn't very good. Service is solicitous. You must ask for a straw (a policy I'm still getting used to). I wouldn't consider a return visit. The place needs some freshening up all around and some more interesting menu items. Again, there aren't a lot of choices in Carp, but there are certainly better ones than Hugos. read more

Hugo's is an adorable little spot. We used to come here almost weekly in high school, and both times we've come back -- in 2014 and 2024 -- the owners recognized us. Not only that, but they welcomed us with all sorts of freebies. As always, the food was hearty, the hospitality was superb, and the couple that runs it couldn't have been nicer. It's also pretty neat that they have the menu of a classic American diner as well as some Asian dishes, and it's all good. A local institution. read more
