I went in with a really odd request. I needed beefier tires on the front of my knee scooter. And the guys were absolutely amazing and they outfitted my knee scooter with wider beefier tires. I have had The Shop service my lawn mowers multiple times over the years, with very mixed results. My most recent experience was great, so they must have a good mechanic now, because 20 years ago when they serviced my mower it ran horrible after I had it tuned up and the owner told be my mower was shot (after charging over $100) and then tried to sell me a new mower. I took my mower to Consumer Rental, who at that time repaired mowers, and they got my Snapper mower running flawless. Oh BTW, I still have that mower, and it still runs great, 20 years after the owner of The Shop told me it was no good and needed to be thrown away. Now let's talk about my gas weed eater that The Shop serviced. A month after they serviced my Stihl Weed Eater I started having trouble with it. I brought it back and asked the owner if he could look at it. He said they didn't service this brand, even though the tag was still on it from just a month ago when they serviced it last! How is that for service? I would only give them two stars, but the owners wife makes really good cookies, I enjoy them and always look for them when I walk in. After my friend and I spent almost two months trying to get ahold of someone as they were on vacation and / or wouldn't answer phone... we finally got ahold of the wife and I dropped off my generator, pressure washer and weed eater November 2020, it took them over a month to service them.... February 2021 I saw the pressure washer leaked fluids in garage, I took it back to them March 9 2021, owner and guy on shop unloaded it from my vehicle... took it and me into the shop, guy in shop said (in front of owner) it looked like it needed a different gasket then the one he used and it would be an easy fix.... I waited for them to call but they didn't... I called today and they don't have my pressure washer... either ""sold it or scrapped it!! ""Owner was awful and told me it was my problem since I waited so long to call???!!! Seriously??! I rarely use my pressure washer and didn't think about it until I thought about using it... he told me it was my problem for not calling sooner??? Do NOT go here!! THIEVES!!! Side note: when he asked why I hadn't called sooner I told him I had moved and also going through cancer treatment.... He told me "well those are your issues, not mine" evil! We dropped off our Cubcadet riding mower on 3/17/2020 with these simple instructions. The battery needs replacing $30-60 and the throttle cable $25 most expensive one I saw, also please do a service job on it oil spark plugs you the normal stuff. It hasn't been running rite so we knew it needed some TLC. So here we are after 3 phone calls we made to them by the way 1st call after 3 weeks of no news about our lawnmower they said we are waiting for the throttle cable to arrive $60 online I looked, another week 1/2 goes by we call them again we are waiting for the starter to get here $30-150 I looked, WAIT WHAT!! no one called about this needing to be replaced on top of that they have had our mower for 6 weeks we were told 1-2 weeks tops. Now after they have done all their work and we have been waiting all this time they call us and say the bill is over $500 dollars!!! No one called to ask if wanted parts replaced they just did it without consulting us. Then he has the nerve to tell us that they dont have time to call about every part, EXCUSE ME!! you dont have time, it took 6 weeks to get it all done but you didn't have time to call me with the price on these parts and repairs. I am being way overcharged for repairs I didn't ask for. This mower is 5yrs old its not even worth $500 used. Brand new it was $1,800.00. I do not recommend taking your mower to this place, no communication no customer service they acted like we were bugging them when we would call and ask about our mower after weeks of not knowing what was going on with it. read more

Local maybe...but not worth the trip. I live just down the street from the shop and thought how convenient, I will just go there ask my question and get carb choke starting fluid. The first contact I had when walking into the business was with the owner Mel...big mistake. This guy has obviously been doing this way too long and needs to hang it up. First off he is on his phone...disgruntled with what he is reading. After a brief wait he acknowledges me...barely...as if I am interrupting his day. This is a place of business and the revenue that is generated from customers is what keeps the doors open. I asked a couple of questions about my mower and he was very short and unfriendly. This experience was as good as it gets! Looking for someone to work on my non-starting Tanaka string trimmer, I arrived at The Shop. Mel told me they are busy enough that it would be three weeks. I gulped, then said ok, and left it after getting the promise of a call if the bill would go over $100. In just over three weeks, I received a call to come and pick it up. The problem was a muffler plugged by a wasp nest--complete with a live wasp. The price was reasonable, especially considering how thoroughly he had gone through the trimmer while looking for the problem. Everything was handled perfectly. The schedule problem was explained, then met. The work was good, the price reasonable, and all interactions were pleasant. Based on my experience it is no wonder they are three weeks behind. read more

Continuing my review: Washington Tractor (Previously Barnett Implement), the local John Deere fixed the problem, which was an incompatible (translation: WRONG) spark plug, which makes the level of incompetence at The Shop even worse than I thought. Washington Tractor also found a belt going bad, fixed the tilt on the mower deck, repaired the cracked and broken hood as best they could (20+ year old plastic tends to break down) and advised me of a few other things to monitor ... and how to fix them myself if and when the time comes. The folks at Washington Tractor as competent and considerate--exactly the opposite of Mel and The Shop. read more

UPDATE: After the owner and employees saw my review they called and threatened me repeatedly. The owner threatened me specifically and the other male employee cursed out my husband over the phone. The only somewhat nice civil person was the female. I will be contacting the BBB. This place should not be in business. I can also see by other reviews that I'm not the only person that feels this way. Review: My husband and I dropped off our push mower and said "We want to get this serviced BUT FIRST please see why and let us know why the AWD isn't working". Well... about 5 days later we get a call letting us know that our mower is ready and it will be over $100. I ask "did you find why the AWD isn't working?". He says "oh yeah. It's shot. You need a new transmission and at that point you might as well get a new mower". Umm... I said that we wanted to know that before we got it serviced. He didn't care. He was a jerk. He talked down to me. Extremely disrespectful. We are not picking up our mower and paying for something that we didn't agree upon. I am absolutely shocked at how I was treated. You ask for a certain thing to be done and then they do whatever they want. They also wanted $400+ for a new transmission. We paid $400 for the mower BRAND NEW at Lowe's. We would not have gotten it serviced if we knew that it needed a transmission and that the AWD would not work. This place is dishonest and tries to con people out of their money. Horrible place to go. He owner is rude, tried to charge me pick up and delivery, but I was picking up the mower myself. I told him that's fine, you're going to pay someone to deliver it, so go ahead, since you won't charge me only for pick up. Told him to have it delivered to my house at the stated delivery time in my reciept, which was noon. He told me it would be delivered whenever he wanted to deliver it, and to get the hell off his property. Ok. I won't be doing business with him again, or will anyone else I know. I've been going to the shop for roughly 17 years, they are dedicated to lawn care and small engine repair. They have always taken good care of my equipment and been up front that it is too hard to do estimates in this line of work. The staff all are committed to quality as opposed to super fast cheap work. I will always choose the shop. read more

I have spent hundreds of dollars at the shop and three times the problem still wasn't fixed (they said it was). Each time the attitude of the staff has been confrontational. Clearly they don't care about providing competent service for which they have charged. Nor do they care when customers complain politely that the problem isn't fixed. They Welded the front wheel assembly back on my mower on same day I dropped it off. AMAZING. I have a 10 Year old John Deer mower where the front wheel caster assembly tore off the mower deck front corner. I did not want to spend the money on replacing mower so I called some welding shops and they wanted a couple weeks and up to $150. So I called The Shoppe and they said their minimum charge would be $35 and may be as high as $50. I dropped it off the next day and was told it could take as much as a week or sooner if possible. This was not a surprise being it is spring time. I was stunned that they actually called me later that SAME day to say it was done ! ! Apparently they had another welding job to do that day so did mine at same time. When I stopped in to pick up the mower the repair was done as promised and they had even painted the repair welded area with John Deer green paint so you could not tell it was even repaired and will prevent rust !! The bill for the work was only $35 ! Very reasonable. They saved me money and I am happy to be able to mow the lawn again without buying a new mower or having to wait for weeks for the repair. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this business. Also they have a convenient location just off freeway in South Mount Vernon. read more

I rarely will write a bad review, but the way I was personally treated throughout the interaction with Mel and this facility was terrible. Where to begin... I presented this facility with a restoration mow deck I was working on. The deck had significant rust on the stamping (main structure), and a couple of the spindles were difficult to turn. My initial email request to The Shop was promptly responded to on March 11th, stating the restoration would be taken care of, "no problem". I delivered the deck that day and both Andy (the tech), and Mel (the owner?), came to my truck to take a look at the deck before stating they would give it a whirl...remember, that was March 11th. Sequence of events: 3/11/2013 - Email request explaining service required, response from The Shop telling me to get the deck in 3/11/2013 - Mow deck delivered, invoice/job opened 3/12/2013 - The Shop did not have the manuals nor parts lists on hand, so I did the research and provided them (via email) with the part numbers needed and the links to suppliers and the belt length cross references 3/28/2013 - After no status update for 16 days, and a phone call from me, I find out that they did have some parts on order and they are waiting for them to arrive on an "unknown date" form their distributor. They stated the only problem they were facing was the blades. I contacted Simplicity/Briggs directly, and they sent me the service and parts manuals for the tractor and the deck, which I provided to The Shop to help them out. 5/3/2013 - We are now 5 weeks from my last update from The Shop, and 8 weeks since I delivered the deck. After finally reaching them by phone, and hearing the same "we don't know when the blades will come in" response, I found the blades, Made in the USA, and readily available. I ordered them, and had them delivered to my home 5/10. My wife then hand-delivered them to The Shop the same day. 5/6/2013 - I sent a follow up email confirming the blades tracking info for 5/10, and received a response stating the tech (Andy) would be able to put it all together on Saturday (5/11) while I waited...BUT, they also did not have the belt!! I re-forwarded the original message where I provided the p/n's and cross reference for the belt, as well as the links to where they had the belt available, and expressed my disappointment in how this was handled. He stated that they do not "surf the webb looking for these parts". He followed that up with "A restoration project of this type would have been much easier and a whole lot less frustrating for all concerned had it been started in the winter months when our business is much slower paced". 5/10/2013 - Blades delivered by my wife 5/11/2013 - I called to verify the deck was ready for pickup. Mel said "It's as ready as it can be, you didn't plan on mowing with it, did you?" I responded in disbelief, thinking he was kidding with me, but he proceeded to explain that the deck was not safe, and in the same breath, stated they put the new tensioner and blades on and I needed to come get it. He then hung up on me as I was responding. Here is the worst part: 5/11/2013 - I arrived at The Shop, and met Mel in the service area. I told him that I was trying to be very patient, but was confused as to what had been happening the past 9 weeks. He responded that he wasn't a patient guy, and told Andy, his tech, to "deal with this idiot, I'm not talking to him". As he left the room he called me an [expletive] as he entered the sales floor where a family with children was present. I told him there was no need to swear, especially in front of children, and he stated that he didn't care. Andy, the tech, took me to my deck and explained that he hadn't even really looked at or worked on it until Thursday of that week, and that the stamping was too weak to support the spindles. He then asked that I pay for the work performed!!! Confused again, I asked "what work was performed, and if the deck could never be used, why in the world they performed any work?" At that time, Mel returned to the service area, grabbed the invoice and parts they did not install, and called me a "cheap [expletive]", and stated that I "just wanted something for free". Ironic, considering I was left with a non-working deck with the 3 blades I procured installed. He told me to take my "[expletive]" and "get off his property". In summary, absolutely horrific experience with this unprofessional, bitter man and his business. To his credit, Andy was very polite and professional through the whole ordeal, and seemed to genuinely care about customer service. I am following up with the BBB, and Simplicity (as The Shop is a distributor for them). There are many fine implement and small engine repair shops in the area (Sno and Skagit Counties)...find another shop. read more

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the other two reviews... I brought my riding mower to The Shop for a tune up and was charged over $200.00 for parts and service. Seemed incredibly expensive, but not being a mechanic I took Mel's word for it. He started the mower up and it seemed to run well so I brought it home. When I tried to mow my lawn for the first time, after the tune up, the mower ran very poorly, losing power and shutting down just minutes into the job. My father in law happened to be over and he took a look at it. He diagnosed the problem as a bad solenoid, which was an $11 part. We replaced it and the mower ran like a champ. I returned to The Shop to talk with Mel and as soon as I said the mower wasn't running well he became hostile. With a raised voice he told me "you're not getting your money back!" I told him I hadn't asked for my money back and, in front of other customers, he told me to get the F#*K out of his shop. I was so amazed at his awful attitude and crass behavior that I decided $200.00 wasn't worth subjecting myself to his surliness... Needless to say, I would suggest you take your small motors to anyone other than Mel at The Shop. He is a hateful and terrible person to deal with, which might be tolerable if he was an honest and decent mechanic... He is neither. On a side note: I recently drove by Mel's house and noticed the wind had blown a huge tree down which took out his car port and caused considerable damage to his property... Smiled to myself thinking, maybe karma really does exist. read more

I recently brought my two mowers into The Shop for some much needed maintenance. I had read the negative review below so I had some trepidation but figured there are always some bad apples in any bunch. The mowers were ready a few days later, looking and running like brand new again. The price was very fair considering the number of parts needed and it was a pleasure to work with Mel. I would heartily recommend their services and will return again in the future. read more
