Came here based on Urbanspoon rating of 85% liked. Count me in the 15% that don't. Rather disappointing. Marginal service. It's a pub but can't get fries with a burger. No dinner salad available. Nothing but Splenda for iced tea. Burgers were served in a plastic basket ala Dairy Queen. Mine was drowned in mustard had a slice of onion nearly as thick as the burger. My husband and I went here for a drink and POSSIBLY some food. We had heard so many great things about the entire menu and thought that we would look it over while enjoying a tasty beer. When we arrived, about 60% of the restaurant was full, so it wasn't overly busy. We asked the hostess if we could just sit up at the bar and she said "Sure." So, we sat. And sat, and sat and sat. I even got up to see if there were any signs saying that we broke some sort of seating rule...but there wasn't. The older man behind the bar must have walked by us 10 times, never making eye contact, or speaking to us. Up until about the 3 minute mark, I was trying hard to give him the benefit of the doubt, thinking that perhaps he was in the weeds or overloaded. But he was just polishing glasses and WATCHING THE TV! My husband and I are both servers at local restaurants, so we have a pretty good idea of how these things work. People make mistakes, I get it. But we continued to sit there for OVER 10 MINS before being acknowledged. He ordered a basic beer and I asked what type of New Holland Beer they had on tap. The response I got was, "Oh, I'm not sure. Do you want a short one or a tall one?" Uhh, what?? So, we drank our beers and sat and sat and sat and sat with empty beer glasses for quite a while before an older woman came by and took them away. She asked if we wanted menus and by that point, we had been there for almost 45 mins. Kinda late for that, don't ya think? So, we declined, paid or bill and went elsewhere for dinner. I would have loved to try what everybody has bee raving about, but I don't think they wanted us to :( We may give this place another try, but we don't have much incentive to do so. read more

Wow, so glad we listened to fellow yelpers and tried this place. The service was very friendly both times that we have been here. I tried the cajun burged the first time and liked it so much I had to get it again. Unfortunately my burger wasn't cooked to the perfect medium it was the first time. It was more like well-done. This has proven to be nice family spot for dining. Wait staff are always friendly and attentive. It can be a very busy place on Summer evenings so plan accordingly. I also like it's not a micro beer only selection like many places have become. We were a party of hour on a Saturday evening and only encountered a short wait for a table. My family and friends love the side door. Just like any other restaurant, there are things on the menu I don't care for. Luckily I am local so I have any chance I would like to order something new. My very favorite things are the Swiss olive burger, the buffalo chicken quesadilla, buffalo chicken wrap, smoked whitefish quesadilla and the white chili. This is the first time here. I had the burger. It was done to perfection at medium the way I ordered it. My wife had the fish tacos and her meal was prepared excellent as well. The atmosphere is great. Very clean and well decorated with that saloon flavor. There was a good selections of beers on tap. Our waitress, Jessica, was very friendly and cheerful. When we left we were greeted by two people, one I think might have been the owner or manager, and asked how the food and service was. Highly recommend the Side Door. I have been to side door saloon multiple times over the years. It's become something of a family tradition and not to mention they make a mean burger. Today my family and I went to eat there, a party of 13, and we were waiting for 45 minutes. People that were coming in behind us were being seated and after speaking up, the owner came to talk to us. His behavior was atrocious. He treated us like we were insignificant and all but kicked us out the door. He told us that he would not split up our party. Instead of working with us and helping us to get food for our seven children, he sat a party of eight that had not been waiting as long as we had been. We tried to bargain by saying we will split our party, but he was uncooperative in all aspects of the word. He was very rude during this whole ordeal and unwilling to provide any alternatives. In the past we've loved the burgers but we will not be back. If it were possible to give a -1 on service we would do so. No burger, no matter how delicious, is worth being treated so disrespectfully. read more

This is a neat place. Clean and well decorated. We stopped here for an early dinner based on reviews. We were seated immediately and given water. My wife and I ordered cheeseburgers because people have stated that they were the best and they were great. We were surprised though that a bar/restaurant such as this did not serve French fries or onion rings. The reason being, the waitress told us, was that they have never had a deep fryer in all the years this place has been in business. Therefore, burgers come with potato chips, which was okay with us. And although we are not gamblers, we couldn't help but notice that they also do not have Keno. Where we live down state, every bar has Keno. Just a weird observation. I had the whitefish sandwich and there was almost no fish! They love mayo and I don't, so the olive burger (olive/mayo mix) was out. Since this was one of our first dinner's out since covid, we were glad to sit outside anyhow. Two of us got burgers & one got steak. My burger was just flavorless. And no option for French Fries? Why not? But my burger just tasted like a frozen burger. The other two had okay meals but whew, at almost $30 for an okay steak dinner, with a small baked potato on the side, that won't be an option again. Our server was okay but didn't see her much-and had to ask for refills/etc as she's walking away. Also, the bill from the previous customer sat at our table the entire time-along with dishes that could have been taken away. Again, pre-bus should be a huge job task reminded to waiters/waitresses--and I did that job for many years. People always need more napkins, always want a refill, and want their extra used plates/etc taken away from the table. Not on this trip and not this server. For an expensive meal with unflavored food, we won't be returning. read more

We were looking for a decent meal while on a snowmobile trip. A local resident recommended this place, so we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and service. I had an Excellent garlic and olive oil marinated New York Strip steak and Caesar salad. Other people in our group had grilled salmon, gourmet burgers, veggie quesadillas and sirloin steaks. We literally just ordered carry out from here. I got the olive mushroom bacon burger and my husband ordered the buffalo chicken wrap. I ordered my burger "no pink" and it came bloody inside. The only thing preventing this from a 5 star is they don't have a fryer. The food is reasonably priced and expertly prepared in the tiniest of kitchens. Sorry about your take, Jeff S., but I guess I wouldn't expect you to know "don't order fries at the Side Door" is the longest running joke in Petoskey. Also, the thick onion slice is their thing on that particular burger. I think it even says that on the menu. My boyfriend and I came in for lunch today and were seated by who I am assuming was a manager, he was kind enough, didn't say much. 15 minutes later our waitress approached us, didnt offer a warm welcome, didn't tell us her name, and greeted us by only saying "are you guys ready to order? She just said "okay" not exactly the answer to our question but he didn't care either way was just curious. Highly recommend!!) our server came over once again to leave the check even though we were only halfway the meal, never asking how the food was or asking if we wanted to get dessert, just dropped the check. All in all food was good, service was just not. She maybe spoke to us 3 times and took a while to pick up the credit card, and even longer to bring it back.
