I would like to post this review as a WARNING. This place should be shut down for STEALING. anyone who has ever gone here before and enjoy it, the atmosphere has changed DRAMATICALLY. I went here a year ago and had a lovely experience. Went back a few weeks ago with some friends and had the worst experience of my life. A couple of my friends are 21 and they ordered a pitcher of sangria. The restaurant did not id any of us and handed all of us (including the underage ones) glasses to drink the sangria. We ordered cups of water for the table, as when you are drinking it is very important you stay hydrated. They brought us bottles of Poland spring. We questioned the waitress if we would be charged for the water and she said yes $2 a bottle. I said, we didn't want bottles, we want glasses of water for the table, like any normal restaurant. This woman was EXTREMELY rude right off the bat. She said they didn't have a filter for their water so they would not give us cups. (What kind of business serving food doesn't have a water filter?!?!?! That's disgusting!) The waitress then demanded that if we'd opened the bottles of water we MUST pay for them. I spoke to the manager after and she was just as rude if not more. I reminded her that it is a FEDERAL LAW, especially if you SERVE ALCOHOL, that every food serving establishment MUST PROVIDE A WATER SOURCE FREE OF CHARGE. Both the manager and the waitress teamed up on me, arguing and yelling at me that we all would have to pay for the water. I refused, sticking to my guns. The fact that they will serve alcohol to underage kids and DENY them water is a hazard of epic proportions. It is a ticking time bomb for the wrong 20 year old to come in, drink too much in the middle of the summer with no water , and pass out of dehydration. After I told her I would absolutely not pay for it, she called someone, who I'm assuming is the real owner, Maria, who has not been there much lately, and had a conversation with her. Following the conversation she said she would take the water off my bill, so it was pretty clear that whoever that woman is who is taking Maria's place right now is trying to turn the restaurant into a money trap. I said ok and went back to the table. Then when I received the bill I noticed they made an edit at the bottom for an addition (clearly typed in) of "1gratuity" for OVER TWENTY PERCENT OF THE BILL! I was infuriated. Instead of starting another war, my friends and I all left the exact amount in cash, excluding the gratuity. However, after reading recent reviews I've seen SEVERAL people say the same exact thing has happened to them. EXCEPT they paid with card and the restaurant CHARGED THEIR CARD AN EXTRA TWENTY PERCENT AFTER THE BILL WAS CLOSED. THEY ARE STEALING FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! This is credit card fraud, it is JAIL TIME. They are very lucky that I didn't pay with card because if that had happened to me I would have gotten a lawyer. I had the worst experience of my dining life last night at Sizzle BBQ. Unfortunately I have loved going to Sizzle ever since they opened and have supported them by dining there many, many times and getting their take out as well. I always support local businesses including restaurants and especially have made a point to do so during Covid times. Here is the backstory. I ordered dinner for my family and planned to go pick it up for take out. I came to find out later that the 'Delivery' option they advertise available every day was not available that day after all. Anyhow, I drove 10 minutes each way to get our family's take out which I did not mind doing once. When I picked up there was only one person working there, the son of the owner Maria. I had met him before and in fact he was very pleasant the first time I met him. He was our server once when my husband & I were there another time with good friends. I remembered that he was going to be moving to Australia so I asked him how his travels had been. He went on to tell me about Australia, moving to Sweden and coming back to NJ. He said he wanted to move to Hawaii soon and that he 'hated NJ and never wanted to live in NJ'. Okay, I thought that last comment was a little harsh but I did not pay much attention to it then. So.. fast forward when I returned home. My husband unpacked the bag to find out that they forgot all of the side sauces that come with the empanadas of which we ordered twelve. So no sauces. Okay. Then I looked at the salad and it had onions on it which I requested 'No Onion' when I ordered. Okay. Then my husband told me that they forgot to include our large side of beans which was a good part of our main meal. So I immediately called back and the son picked up the phone. I told him what was missing from our order. He said 'Oh... I thought I packed everything' and then said he couldn't deliver what was forgotten because he was the only one at the restaurant. Okay.. so no delivery as advertised. He then said I can either leave you a credit for what we forgot or you can come pick it up. Obviously, this was frustrating for me since my family could not eat dinner as planned and I would have to drive another 20 minutes there and back to get what I already paid for. I then said to him if I come all the way back to the restaurant what can you do to make up for the error? I may not have said it exactly as I had meant it to come across but after working for 20 years in food retail I know what good service is and if you make multiple mistakes on an order you would definitely do something to make up for it. It could have been a free drink, a coupon, anything just to acknowledge the error. He then got very nasty with me over the phone and said 'What can I do for you?!" He was beginning to raise his voice. I repeated myself and said 'Yes, what can you do since my order wasn't right and I have to drive all the way back there'. I then told him my kids could not eat their dinner without the items that were missing and he then mocked me saying, "Your kids can't eat their dinner?" His tone was filled with sarcasm. I told him I would be back there in 10 minutes and hung up the phone. When I walked back into the restaurant he stormed out from the kitchen and looked at me and started yelling in my face calling me 'entitled'. I could not believe his attitude or rudeness and would not stand for it. I told him I was entitled to the food I ordered and that didn't happen. Of course I was also entitled to good or even decent service which was not happening at all either. I also told him that I had worked in food retail for 20 years (mostly in management) and if I had ever spoken to a customer the way he was speaking to me I would have been fired on the spot. He continued to yell at me telling me I was entitled and then tried to tell me that I never ordered the beans in the first place. I quickly put him in his place saying I absolutely ordered them and my husband heard me order since I was talking on speaker phone. He was one of the rudest persons I've ever encountered in any food establishment and I have worked and gone to hundreds and hundreds. Sadly, the owner Maria was standing off to the side witnessing her son berate me with nasty words and she did nothing until the very end. She may have been afraid of him or in shock at the situation but until I motioned for her to step in she just stood there doing nothing. Finally, she came over and pushed him back and told him to walk away. As a paying customer, I do expect restaurants to get your order right. Of course people are human and mistakes happen but when someone working at a restaurant gets aggressive with a customer for asking if they can make up for their mistake somehow that is a major, major problem. I was so rattled from the experience that it literally kept me up that night. I went as far as even considering making a police report for verbal abuse as that is how aggressive this young man was with me. read more

The food here is pretty good, overall. The atmosphere and the environment are great. I liked the empanadas and thought that was the strength of my dining experience at The Sizzle. The customer service is good and the prices are fair. I will say, the name is somewhat misleading to a self-styled bbq aficionado, as it isn't bbq in the traditional American sense. read more

Went here today for lunch with 6 of us. The place is adorable inside. Very well decorated! Was a little worried about the recent review of the child running around but when we arrived it was quiet as it just opened. One server was working and she seemed very nice. Started with empanadas and they were good. Not a huge fan of empanadas in general as they are fried but we wanted to try some different ones. Salads came out and they were huge and liked by those that had salads. One sandwich we had was Grandmas favorite and that was good and plentiful. Our only disappointment was the lack of sausage on the Argentinian sandwiches. Very flavorful but quite skimpy on the sausage. Barely one sausage sliced in half. Also, one of our party ordered empanadas for her lunch and I think they forgot. They were brought out much later as most of us had eaten half of our food. They also forgot her request for sugar for her iced tea. Towards the end of our meal, we saw the owners child that the other reviewer mentioned. We were worried but she wasn't as bad thankfully but we do agree she should not be able to go around the restaurant freely. Overall it was good but could use a little fixes. read more

Came to give this new spot a try with my family and was thoroughly pleased with all aspects of the business. The atmosphere and decor immediately make you feel welcome when you walk through the door. Has a nice rustic me accompanied by a variety of antique items spread throughout the restaurant....a complete 360° compared to the old Leo's luncheonette that was there previously. The entire staff was super friendly..especially our waitress Angie. To start, she gave us a quick rundown of what they had to offer and how they cook their meat. We took her suggestion and ordered the sizzle mix which gives you a sampling of all their meats. Had a very nice presentation- its served on a miniature charcoal pit (wish I took a picture). She warned us it would take awhile to cook and asked if we wanted to start off with any empanadas...we were reluctant to say yes thinking it would be too much food but she persuaded us to give them try because it was one of the items they were best known for...let me just say, she was right, you are 100% missing out if you don't order at least one to share while you are there. We decided to keep it simple and just go with a traditional beef one instead of all the other options they have to pick from and it was by far one of the best I have ever tried. 3$ did seem a bit high for the3 cost of one, but it was well worth it. We liked all the meat that came in the mix, but I think the pork ribs were out favorite. They do provide you with home made sauces to use for everything that were good, but we found them not necessary as the meat had a great taste without them. Their dessert selection and presentation was also beautiful done. We shared a carmel cheese cake and a flan that was just as good, if not better, than the food. Angie took a display tray to our table to show us the desserts and was very patient as our teenage boys intensely decided which ones they wanted. Even though it was a Saturday night during what appeared to be the dinner craze where it seemed that just about everyone working there was running around, she took the time to introduce us to the owner who was a super nice lady. It seemed like she genuinely cared about our feed back and improving whatever deemed necessary and also cared about getting to know her customers...one of the nice/rare things about a family restaurant. Before we left both angie and the owner showed us their outside seating/patio area that they were in the works of the completing. This also had a rustic feel and our family looks forward to dining out there the next time we are in. ADVICE- 1. there is parking in the back, without meters..esp hard to find parking on main street on the weekends. 2. Save room for dessert. 3. Sit with angie!!!! SUGGESTION- i know its a new restaurant but some items on the menu they no longer offer and should probably be taken off. read more

This restaurant is excellent. Great food and variety of choices. The atmosphere is great. Our server, Dan, was excellent and very helpful with menu choices. They deliver too! These are the best empanadas around hands down. The variety was great and the fillings were super fresh.

Most of the previous reviews were correct. The ribs were not tender. We got the $55 assortment of all their meats. The skirt steak was good and so was the chicken. All ribs, sausages, steak and chicken had the same exact flavor. The empanadas were great. If I go back, I will get a salad and empanadas. The server was great. Went here for the first time and I found my new favorite place to eat in Hackettstown! Our waiter and the owner were so welcoming and went over the whole menu for us. We started with the fresh juiced juices which were amazing and tried the empanadas which were to die for! Best empanadas in the area by a long shot. We ordered take out. They came faster than expected. The food was hot. We got a mixed grill meat platter and some empanadas and they were delicious! Everything on the platter was good but surprisingly my favorite was the beef rib! The rice was cooked perfectly. My son loved his Nutella banana empanada! I can't wait to eat in! I loved Leo's Lunch so much and was so sad to see it go... BUT, this place is soooo worthy to replace it! I had the pork ribs and empanadas, and found both to be excellent. The ribs were so smoky delicious they don't even need any sauce. Empanadas were moist and incredibly flavorful, and the variety of sauces they give you are fantastic on everything.
