The food at the River Star is great. One of the last true New Jersey Diners operating today. I dare you to find a bad option on there extensive menu. Best disco fries in North Jersey. If you don't know what disco fries are, you're not around here. And our property taxes are low. But you should find out. Seriously, the food at the Riverstar is consistently good, and if you order one of their specials either for dinner or whatever you're gonna be more than pleasantly surprised. Their prices are reasonable in an unreasonable world. The service, however, is outstanding. The experienced waitresses, well they got you, hon. They will make you feel like you're at your wise Auntie's table. You know what I'm talking about the one that knows you were out all night when only the devil and emergency rooms are open. Younger waitresses here serve well beyond their years. They all honestly want you to be happy and are more than willing to keep your drink full, even if you drink like dry storm drain, like I do. These serves always make sure any of your special orders, arrive as desired. Now make sure to tip your waitresses and waiters before you leave. At the classic diner counter you will observe the regulars who found a second family and home. Behind the river star is the sometimes raging Musconetcong River, that compliments, the chrome and pleather perfectly. In the spring, my advice would be to sit in the back of the dining area and watch the mama and baby ducks swim bye. In short, the River Star Dinner is everything a New Jersey diner is supposed to be. Another stop to fill a long-needed empty space: diner sausages. I had the River Star Special. I chose pancakes and added a sausage to the 1 already offered. Eggs over medium. All done to perfection. Service was exceptional. Beth was very nice and on the spot. We didn't have to ask for anything, she asked us if we needed it. We got our much-missed cokies as we left, too. I came here with my two friends and her mom i ordered the orange jucie it was spicy, warm, with an odd olive juice taste. food was aight, finished it in about 3 minutes. might just be because i'm obese but i don't think so, i weigh around 244.87 lb and inhaled it. was debating on asking for more but price was to high. read more

What a great spot to stop in for a lovely breakfast! Ended up this side of NJ and needed to kill some time and fill up - picked the right place. The service was excellent and everyone was kind and polite. Not to mention the food came out very quickly which I appreciate! We eaten breakfast & lunch here several times & always enjoyed our food. The omelettes are always delish & the large greek salad with chicken is spot on! Lots of goodies in the salad including pita & stuffed grape leaves. Service has always been fine here - they will always check to see if you need a refill, etc. My only complaint is that the parking is tight & a little difficult as you have to back out onto Rt.57 but don't let that deter you from stopping in & getting some good food! read more

Cheese burger overcooked and without cheese chili was just sloppy joe mix. Ruben came without Russian dressing, chicken Marsala tasted like gravy and the chicken was loose. Saw the waiter maybe twice the whole time. But seriously you think something would be right here but even the atmosphere felt hostile. The score would definitely increase if they put some money back into the business. New dinner ware and maybe glass cups instead of plastic would go a long way. Food is fine, and service is usually fine, but one waitress in particular should not be working here. On a slow day, it took 15 minutes for her to take my order. It took some time for a refill on my coffee - usually the servers here are on top of it - and the refill tasted very watered down. I pointed that out, and she just gave me a new cup of the same batch. Finally, her shift ended and told neither me, nor anyone else to at least ask me if I need anything else or if I needed the check. She's been my waitress the past two trips here. Dad had tuna salad. Prompt service. No complaints with the food. Probably the first diner where I was not offered a refill on my coffee, though. What keeps this review at three stars is the condition of the place. We were seated in the back. The booths are in awful shape. The ceiling has water damage and is unpleasant to look at. Come here a few times a month. Tonight was definitely the last time. Ordered an Italian omelette. Did not have Italian sausage as advertised. Like they took one breakfast link and cut it up. Very disappointed with the quality of the food after loving it for many years. Ordered a meal that had fruit added to it and what came out was defrosted bagged strawberries. We really used to enjoy going here and we used to be regulars but haven't been in a long time because of cleanliness issues. We tried them again recently and the issues still haven't been resolved. I had a lipstick stain on my coffee mug - nasty & disgusting - and another time white goop in my coffee mug which I managed to spit out. I just don't think their dishwashing is efficient enough, as the waitress commented that it's happened before. I've had bad experiences with sodas from their soda fountain too. The booths look like they've seen better days and the floor is always dirty. I know they had a renovation a few years back but they need another one. The place looks dirty. Some items on the menu are good like the salads/breakfast but others are just OK, sub-standard fare. I feel uneasy about eating there now as the place is so dirty and I don't know what goes on in the kitchen. Most of the servers are very nice but that can only go so far. Nothing exceptional to report. Service is usually friendly and efficient. I have been surprised when I tried some specials at how tasty they were. Overall, I liked my experience. Restaurant is clean and fairly updated. We were seated right away. Portions are HUGE. Server was on point. She could've been more amicable but she did a good job so friendly or not, I'm not going to make complain. My ONLY gripe was that the chicken in my Greek wrap was rubbery. It was almost as if it wasn't done enough. I even spit it out & broke it up to make sure the chicken was done. It looked okay but the texture was strange. Nevertheless, I recommend this place. I've come to the River Star Diner a couple of times seeing as I live in Hackettstown, between this one and Budd Lake diner I could honestly say I've had more satisfying experiences here. This diner is an honest hands down diner, the wait staff are friendly, the food is genuinely tasty, and the portions you receive for the price you pay is AMAZING Some diners I have been to either jack the prices or squash the proportions, and River Star does neither, for the price I pay and the meal I get I am incredibly satisfied. I will continue to bring my business here as it is closer and in my opinion more delicious than the Budd Lake Diner. read more

Dirty, dingy, and rude!!! Went to a show at Centenary College that ended late...10:30. We wanted to get some coffee and dessert and The River Star Diner was the only location open at that hour. Got there at 11:00ish and was greeted by a lovely young lady who took our order and took pretty good care of us overall. 4 desserts...4 dirty plates. Old dry almond cake, blueberry pie, apple pie, and cherry pie. Cold stale coffee. Was told at 11:45 that we had to leave because they were closed...by older woman/manager/waitress. Overheard the owner making Anti-Semitic comments in causal conversation with a customer.
