We went for dinner and the tavern is a small nice restaurant! The tavern was small and packed! It was pretty loud. Loved the ambiance! I ordered a ribeye cheesesteak with waffle fries. The ribeye steak was a whole slice of meat. It had a decent thickness. The ribeye was soft to the bite. I would have liked the ribeye to be chopped up like a classic cheesesteak. The hoagie roll was soft. The waffle fries were delicious. It had battered to it. It was a great side to the cheesesteak. The cheeseburger was medium rare and was perfectly cooked. The burger was very tasty with a classic side order of tots! Brings back memories of childhood lunches. The French onion soup was to perfection! The provolone cheese was charred perfectly. The cheese charred on the side was delicious. The soup with the French bread was not as salty as your typical French onion soup! Which made it even more enjoyable! It's five stars for a tavern/pub like experience. It does have a lot of character. Lots of wood, there's a good amount of people and yet the noise level is comfy for even group dinners. Stopped by Old Mill Tavern -- a nice little place with a whole lot of heart, just down the road from Alstede Farms. Food: I had the Garlic Buffalo wings and the Buffalo chicken sandwich. The wings were outstanding!great size, full of flavor, and perfectly cooked. The sandwich, however, had way too much blue cheese for my taste (more blue cheese than sandwich), but the steak fries were excellent and made up for it. Service: Service was okay overall but a bit slow to start, as it took a while to be helped. Once things got moving, the staff was polite and helpful, though timing could definitely be improved. Aesthetic: The tavern has a lot of character with a cozy bar vibe and a decent amount of seating. Went here for lunch on a Monday while my husband and I were off, while taking a nice drive. As soon as we walked in, we noticed a slight bad odor, which was odd. The food was not impressive at all. We both got French Onion Soup that was not great. I got a chicken salad sandwich that was not good. The bread was horrible, however the chicken salad was decent. My husband got a sandwich and said it was ok, but had better. We were not impressed and won't be returning. read more

No one noticed us at our table for a solid 10 minutes. Our waitress was slow af. My husband's drink order took another 15 minutes and was wrong. Bacon wrapped scallops were like a D+. My 2 year old's food was brought out crazy hot. Everything else was good- burger was good. Ribs were good. Probably won't be back. While running errands on a rainy Saturday afternoon, my wife and I were looking for a new place to try for lunch. Since we were going to be in the area, we decided to stop in at the Old Mill Tavern. This happened to be the first weekend sitting at bars is allowed again and while we sat at a table, it was just nice to see. The drinks were excellent and the food was better than your typical bar food. From my Bloody Mary, to the boneless wings appetizer, to the entrees, we both enjoyed our food. On top of which, the cakes are brought in from a Denville bakery and my carrot cake was delicious! If you're in Chester and you're looking for a nice stop for drinks or food, give this old fashioned tavern a try! read more

The staff was super nice...seating us outside even though we arrived a few minutes before they opened. Overall good bar/pub food. We stopped here Bc of its proximity to Hacklebarney State Park. After hitting the trails for a few miles we devoured our food...more out of hunger than anything else. The Cooper burger was good I'm told, while there was nothing wrong with my Buffalo chicken sandwich. I will say though, both the regular and the waffle fries had no flavor (lacking salt too). We stopped in after going to Alstede farms. It is a dark, old school pub with a small menu. Overall, I would skip this place. My burger was simply ok , nothing to rave about. It wasn't salted and served overcooked. The wings were also overcooked and the kid's grilled cheese wasn't melted enough. How can you mess up grilled cheese? The only great part of my meal was the Guinness. If I'm around the area again, I am definitely going to try another restaurant. read more

The only good things about this place were the waffles fries and the cole slaw (and the service was pretty quick too). Our party of four came in on a Sunday a little after two and it was pretty empty. To start, we had the 'broccoli poppers', more out of curiosity and not because we actually wanted them. But they turned out to be pretty good. It's basically just battered discs of broccoli and cheese. For my main, I went with the rib-eye cheese steak. I thought it would be shaved steak, but it was actually just slab of beef, covered with a thick layer of cheese. It was pretty oily so I'm really glad I opted for cole slaw instead of fries, especially since my BF already had fries with his meal. The first few bites were not bad but the more I ate it, the saltier it seemed to get. I felt very lethargic afterwards, and not in a good way. I know, I know - what do I expect after eating a cheese steak? Well I've had other cheese steaks before (that were good) and didn't feel like a pile of sludge afterwards. We only stopped in because it was close to the hiking spot we had just gone to, and we were starving. Won't be returning again though. read more

Went to this landmark for my mother's 75th birthday. Greeted at the hostess stand cordially & immediately. Sat down at a deuce against the front windows of the tavern. Server immediately took a drink order and asked if we wanted to start with an appetizer. Very friendly staff; probably 6 tables were sat when we got there and a few patrons sitting at the bar. We ordered our drinks & a bacon wrapped scallops appetizer. Got 4 HUGE sea treasures wrapped in swine delivered to the table quickly; cooked to perfection with the standard lemon wedge accompaniment. They were quite nice. The entrees ordered were teriyaki steak (which seemed like a flank cut) asked for medium & was on point with that. My mother loves that dish & has ordered it often. My order was the 16 oz sirloin, asked for medium rare, with broccoli & steak fries. All came out excellent, basically perfect. Kitchen & staff was on point with delivery of food, clearing empty plates, and refilling drinks. Got a $5 slice of carrot cake to end. (Small piece; very) scallops app $15 teriyaki steak $21 sirloin steak $28 soft drinks $3 each. Very nice dinner out. With 22% tip. $100 for a nice celebration out. Highly recommend. read more

This place is a cute little country sports joint in Chester New Jersey. Basic food like burgers, wings,etc. Fun ambience and good energy from a very sports minded crowd at the bar. Our server, Helen, was simply a joy to be around. Great service, fantastic attitude and smile. We've been coming here every month or so for about thirty years and after tonight are looking for other options. The service was slow and disorganized and the food has done downhill. The music was too loud and seemed based on a confusing playlist - it was unclear what atmosphere was intended. The food was not what it used to be. The hot wings were overcooked and sitting in a puddle of sauce. The greens in the salad were not fresh. The fried seafood was densely coated and greasy. There were a few other tables seated when we arrived, and by the time we finished the dining room was just over half full. Still it was very difficult to get the attention of our server. We had to ask repeatedly for a second round of drinks; these finally arrived after we had finished eating. After the server cleared the table, we were left for several minutes with no suggestion of dessert/coffee not any offer of a check.. Once we did get our check it was handled promptly. read more

Came here on a snowy day. Cozy, friendly establishment with bar and table seating. They have a Monday special, at the bar only. Half price appetizers and $1 off drinks. We only noticed this after we sat down at a table but asked to move since we wanted to order apps anyway. The waitress was so nice and amicable about it, even though she lost a tip on a slow day (we tipped her later anyway). She told us not to feel bad and helped us carry our drinks. The bartender was also super nice and attentive. We ordered wings and he kept emptying the plate with bones and giving us a fresh one. OK beer selection. I have to say - I wasn't too impressed by the wings - they had a regular (different levels of spice) version as well as breaded and garlic. Tried all of them and they weren't all that great. The burgers and wings here are great. I have not eaten anything besides the burgers and wings. They have different Happy Hour specials every night. I usually sit at the bar and eat there. The bartenders have always been great and super friendly. They are attentive and keep an eye on your food and drinks. 50 cent wing night on Wednesday is great. My friends and I went to dinner here after fall festivities nearby. Its a very cute and old fashioned tavern, there was a long wait and a lot of people in there. I got the chester chicken sandwich, it was alright. The thousand island dressing didn't do much for me, and the fries were just okay. We have been going here for years, but since the new ownership about 3 years ago, the food just isn't the same. I was happy to see they kept the same old menu, which I would assume means they offer the same food, but sadly, that is not always the case. One of my regular favorites was their Milltown Cobb Salad. Actually, all of their salads USED to be good and always came in a huge bowl with plenty of romaine lettuce and other vegetables and accoutrements. All salads on their menu are supposed to have "crisp romaine lettuce" - what I was given was a bowl (not filled to the rim) of that spring mix/mesclun wilted stuff, which I am NOT fond of and, more importantly is NOT on the menu. If they updated their menu to state spring mix, then I could understand and avoid ordering, but no notation on the menu whatsoever and no mention by wait staff. Also, no soft piece of bread and butter included like they used to offer. Extremely disappointed. On another visit we both ordered burgers. Which state "on a KAISER roll". Neither of us got a kaiser roll, but instead some weird pretzel type roll. Not bad, but again, NOT what is stated in the menu and not what we expected. Their waffle fries are nothing more than seasoned frozen McCain fries. And the traditional fries are always over salted. It's too bad because this place was good - maybe run down interior, but still usually some nice waitresses (especially Jen) and overall HAD some decent food. Oh, and although they did update the carpet and tables - you might want to look into either replacing or padding the chairs which are painfully uncomfortable. read more
