I've had some problems with service being a bit inconsistent (such as today's visit), but the quality of the food here will keep me coming back. Today 2 of us came in for lunch, and we each ordered the soup-and-half-a-sandwich deal. The soups change daily and are given to you hand-written on a piece of scrap paper. Today they got our order only 50% right. My soup, a broccoli, spinach, leek soup was delicious, with a rich stock. The other soup was a bowl of something not ordered, but we kept it anyway. It was also delicious, just not what we ordered. For the half-sandwich, it was my turn. I ordered a turkey sandwich - there are 2 of them on the menu, and the waitress even double checked to make sure she put in the right one. I ordered the one on whole wheat bread, but I got the other one, which came out on a flaky croissant. Again, it was delicious, just not what I ordered. I wasn't going to order dessert, but I tried to succumb when I saw that besides their homemade confections, they also serve chocolate cheesecake made by the nuns at New Skete, topped with their own homemade raspberry sauce. Adding insult to injury was upcharging for ham that is a core ingredient of eggs Benedict. This was absurd given that already astounding prices they charge. Sides were potatoes which were okay, but it was also served with salad that I was suspect of given the current health issues with lettuce. My wife was equally disappointed with what was supposed to be a French omelette but turned out to be an overcooked, open face western omelette that was more like rubber than eggs. Her $9 blueberry smoothie was delicious though Service was slow with only two other tables occupied when we arrived, although our eventual server turned out to be quite pleasant. I opted for a healthy bowl of tomato basil soup, with a drizzle of pesto (served with a small, delicious roll) AND a less healthy piece of their old-school New York deli-style, single layer coffee cake with a moist golden cake with a (very) thick layer of crumb (sugar & cinnamon). It transports you back to old school deli cakes. The sign says all baked goods are made from scratch, in-house. My friend said the scones are terrific. 100% of the profits from this bakery go directly to the Business For Good Charity.

It's a crime against the people of Saratoga Springs. And it's just plane offensive. I regret if anyone was driven to try Mrs. London's based on my previous glowing reviews. I am so sorry. I had no idea. But I was just there this morning. I gazed into the pastry case at the croissants, and my heart sank. I felt sick. The croissants looked like something you would see in an airport. I think the croissants at Costco might be better. These were flat, flabby, and pale things. Far from the perfect, golden, flaky, structured, glistening beauties of the past. And this isn't about fond recollections. I have receipts. Photos from the past and pictures of the present. It's night and day. If the new owners aren't going to preserve Mrs. London's food, they should have the decency to put someone else's name on the joint. I too asked about the breads, and was told "their baker retired". Fortunately, Michael London taught other people to bake amazing artisan bread, and his legacy lives on elsewhere. Unfortunately, nobody at the shop bearing his name bothered to pick up the torch. What a shame. It is so sad. I am literally heart broken. This was one of my favorite bakeries in the country. I went out of my way to make a special stop in my limited time passing through the region. But I suppose nothing lasts forever, and this is a valuable reminder of that unfortunate fact. My one minor gripe with the service is that on both occasions we've been, there's been confusion about who owns what drink when it's called out. Coffee: Their drinks with syrups (I've tried the dirty chai, maple cardamom, and cinnamon bun) all tend to lean on the sweeter side, and it's hit or miss as to whether the other flavors come through - especially the maple cardamom. We didn't get either flavor. Next time, I'll stick to a standard coffee and milk drink. Baked Goods: Scones - a must-get! We tried the orange cranberry, and both agreed that it was unusually and exceptionally good - certainly the best I'd ever had. Plus, they're enormous, so plan to split or have leftovers. Cinnamon roll - skip. The scarcity marketing of it being a Saturday-only special got to me, but I wouldn't order it again. Tangzhong would be a welcome addition. Bagels - fantastic. These are very different to the bagels at Uncommon Grounds, which are more dense and chewy. If you prefer a lighter, airier bagel with a substantial crisp on the outside, you'll love these. They don't have too many varieties yet (I think just everything, cinnamon raisin, and plain), but even the plain is excellent. Love that they do an over-easy egg on the breakfast sandwiches.
