I am so in love with The Skip. First, the location is great - nestled within the artsy alleyway otherwise know as "The Belt", The Skip is the perfect component to an afternoon or evening out in Detroit. The Skip is brought to us by the same fine folks behind Standby, but the only similarities between the two places are the fantastic flavors, and the rather "dark" atmosphere - everything is painted black to provide a lovely backdrop to the colorful frozen cocktails that adorn the front bar. I arrived on a Thursday late afternoon after visiting the Motown Museum with some friends visiting from NYC. The sky was super dark and threatening a storm, so we took a chance and ordered up. We each chose something different, but we all ordered our frozen drinks each with an additional float shot on top. My choice was the Daiquiri with a Cruzan float. Hands down, better than any frozen drink I've had at any beach resort, tiki hut, you name it. The fat straw and little umbrella really added to the experience. Our service was great - the very cool and tatted bartenders really know their stuff. Overall, I am eager to grab a drink at The Skip whenever I get a chance. Parking is either on the street or in the Z lot - be cautious about flat rate parking at the Z lot, we paid $10 not knowing what to expect and rushing to beat the rain. read more

Omgooodness drinks were strong and delish! The staff was super duper nice. There was a very long line when we got there and very cold outside, the gentleman at the door was kind enough to let us in and wait at the door. Once at the door the lady seating ppl went ahead and gave us the next seat that became available! I enjoyed the Christmas music and the overall atmosphere. I came to Detroit to see the 2018 North American Auto Show with my daughter. Following the great show of awesome vehicles from all car makers, it was time for a cocktail. The Skip, my friends is the place to go! Master Mixologist James , Chef/Bartender Brennen, and Lyndsay were excellent. If you want an exotic, well put together cocktail, King James is your man! Fun little bar with fun cocktails - the slushy Irish cream or champagne cocktails are tasty, but very sweet. I would like to go back here but only during the daytime or not on an evening during the weekend as it was a bit too packed and the bartenders seemed to be too frustrated in managing the crowds. I've been anticipating going to this spot. I finally had a reason to tonight for my hubbys 20 year class reunion. It was not what I expected. It was very difficult to get a drink. The bar tender basically ignored my husband and several other brothas when they tried to get her attention to buy drinks. I don't spend my money where I am not welcome. So I won't be itching to get back to this place. The Belt, however is a very cool, chic, hip spot to visit with lots to visually stimulate you. read more

I've been here too many times to count and love the cocktails. I was most recently here while they had their special holiday cocktail menu served in Christmas themed glass. They don't have any food outside or a few basic appetizers that are mediocre. It can get pretty busy during the winter given the small size but its fantastic in the summer when they open their much bigger patio in the ally. read more

love the concept of this place, it's great. it's an open air bar located in the alley next to the Z parking structure. on late night weekends, they check your ID at the entrance of the alley (sounds silly, but it saves time for when you order your drinks at the skip). you should also probably note that if you park in the Z during late night weekends, you cannot enter the alleyway through the alley door from the Z. they will make you walk around to the front entrance for the purpose of someone checking your ID/receiving a wristband, i thought this concept was a little dumb because there were no signs saying you couldn't enter from the Z. just a snooty security guard waiting for you after you walk down the steps telling you that you can't enter from there. put signs up so people don't waste their time walking down 6 flights of stairs only to have to walk right back up the stairs! this would be terrible for elderly people. so make sure you use the elevator side to go downstairs and enter the alley. anyway, this place was packed on a friday night around 10p, and i can see why. the frozen drinks are outstanding, and they are very strong! if you're a lightweight you might find that you only need one drink. for $9.50, you get your moneys worth. the cups for frozen drinks are tiny but i can understand why considering the drinks are strong. i highly recommend the french 75, especially on a hot summer night! they also have some small bites if you find yourself hungry. this is the perfect hangout spot for a group of friends. i'm looking forward to coming back here! read more

I went here on a hot, Saturday night as one of our many bar crawl spots. After being indoors for a while, it felt good to drink outside and listen to music. But the best part was definitely when my husband brought back the frozen Irish coffee! It was just what my sweaty and and tired soul needed! It's feels like having an adult dessert. If you are meeting anyone in the belt, the easiest thing to say is "I'll meet you under the white square at the skip". Easily the most noticeble thing for anyone to journey towards. Plus if you are there, you are also naturally in a line for a drink. One star up for this. We also waited in the food line for a solid 40 minutes and only three people (out of the 8 in front of us) were helped. I gave up on waiting. But I'm not knocking them any stars for this. Usually have a great experience there but the last visited was very disappointing.... We showed up at 3:55 pm when they open at 4 pm. The door was unlocked so we went in. The staff told us that we had to wait outside until they opened in the RAIN. Normally I agree that it is rude when customers try to come in before opening, however, it was 5 minutes and the staff was just sitting around waiting for 4 pm. This is my go-to in Detroit. Whenever I have friends visiting from out of town I take them to the Skip. The drinks are delicious and the vibe is good. It's also relatively close to Candy Bar, Punch Bowl, and Queens Bar so you can hop around. Of course there's also the Standby right down the alley. The alley itself is mesmerizing. The beauty of the Skip is you never know what kind of crazy events they have going on. For Movement they had an Adidas Party with dj's and the whole event was free (except drinks). In July they had Win Butler(Arcade Fire) doing a DJ set. That event was also free and it was a blast. read more

I haven't been back to Detroit for a few years since I moved to DC. I was a little skeptical when my friends told me they were taking me to an alley for a drink. But for real, this was the best night I've ever spent in a dark alley. So the ambiance is great, there are plenty of murals, string lights and the bar is open and airy. The vibe is more casual, but there were some folks dressed to the nines so wear whatever you are most comfortable in. I had an irish coffee slurpee thing and my friends got cucumber margarita and enjoyed their selection of beers. Drinks were reasonably priced (but I live in DC so anything under $10 for a dixie cup is reasonable to me) and the Irish coffee was tasty. The music gets an A- a lot of really good hip-hop but most if it was 1-2 years old. Overall a great time! And my instagram posts were on slay. read more

My favorite place to grab a drink before a tigers game. This place is nothing fancy (literally a bar in an alley), but it's a super cool place to take friends who have never been to Detroit. My buddy "the Wolf," took me here during a recent day-trip to Detroit. He wanted to show me some of the many bars around the downtown Detroit area, so we walked to "the Belt" and had a drinky drink here. The bar itself is very nice. It's in a hipster, artsy back alley between a parking garage and a row of businesses. The building used to be just a seasonal open environment bar, however they have renovated and added a garage door that they can open, weather permitting. It's a darker atmosphere with random bits of art through the bar and a television and some weird little plant things everywhere. They serve several craftish beers. If you are looking for your typical bud light or miller light, you are not going to find that here. Closest thing to it is a Stroh's or Hamm's. Not necessarily this is a bad thing, it's just not my cup of tea. I don't love trying craft beers at a premium price, I like going with what I know. I didn't really feel like I was at peace here. They had two guys working that sported size 32 skinny jeans and the typical quicken loan hipster apparel. I dress like a man, so I felt like I wasn't accepted. The two dudes working there did not seem to go out of their way to make conversation with us either. I was happy to sip my over priced Stroh's (out of a can) and move on to the next place. I respect the atmosphere this place probably has on a weekend night, but it's not my thing. read more

Amazing bar amazing vibe and the drinks were good and strong, I just wish they had cold appetizers or offered something other than drinks, the frozen drinks are really good, I went around 4 ish and it was busy so I think we went in a good time because at least after 20 mins we could get a seat even tho it's nice that you can drink in the open area they have there. Skip Bar wins for 3 reasons: 1) Location: it's in the middle of the Art Alley, Downtown and across from a parking garage. They don't have much competition in terms of atmosphere or parking. The view is entrancing and the open space allows the energy to grow far beyond the boundaries. 2)Pre-made drinks: They've outdone the typical pitcher of pre mixed margaritas and long islands. The slush style ritas and other drinks make the service experience quick and fun. You know what you want, order it and it's there. 3)Price: No door cover, for ladies I'm sure and well priced drinks make this a favorite for all budgets and group types. I like going with friends but I would never show solo dolo. It is not a friendly vibe. It's open but not inviting. The crowd is predominantly white with some small groups of non white in the mix. The music caters to an EDM young white demographic which I'm sure after work during the week is the audience but for Friday and Saturday night turnup I want a more "urban" experience, especially in Detroit. I'm sure young white atmosphere developed here is by design but for bars in Detroit, that can't fly, it needs to be more inclusive and welcoming by having non EDM hip hop, soul and funky dance music. Dance floor or no dance floor but not that tiny space where only two couples can two step. It's a cool spot but I won't be a regular. read more

We had been there once before and enjoyed it, but wanted to bring our daughter back who actually has a great blog page and we really wanted her to see this place. We looked on the website they said it open at four we went there they were closed for renovation. They said come back Tomorrow at 4. OK no problem went back the next day at four. Again. We were so very disappointed because both times we took an Uber to get there only to find they were close. Even worse, the man there was so rude and basically told us not to come in. Feeling the Christmas spirit, we visited The Skip during it's Christmas Pop-Up featuring the Sippin' Santa. This bar, located in The Belt of Detroit, was decked out for the holidays in a Tiki bar meets Kris Kringle vibe, and it was awesome! Upon entering, you are met with festive lights, decorations, and Christmas movies playing on the single TV ('Die Hard' was on when we were there) in the back corner for your full Christmas experience. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, as they have outdoor heaters around picnic tables outside. We sat inside and luckily were able to find two seats at the bar without a wait. As a heads up, I would drop by earlier than you plan on going to put your name down. Otherwise the wait may be a while, as when we left the attendance had really picked up. As we perused the cocktail menu, we saw many holiday-inspired drinks including cocktails served in Santa mugs, holiday shots, and a Jingle Bowl punchbowl to serve you and your friends. All drinks are brought to you with a colorful swirled straw and tiki-inspired surfboard. Definitely drop into this place during the holidays to find something unique to the city! read more

This place is exactly when Detroit needed! This place is so unique and a change in the average bar going experience. This place is great on a nice summer evening to enjoy drinks with friends. They even have a happy hour which makes it even better for an after work gathering to kick off the weekend. Seating is first come first serve so depending on what time you show up you might end up standing around waiting for a table to open up. If you get there around 4/5 there should be plenty of seating available. read more

Great addition to the belt and Detroit in general. I have been here on several occasions, each time it was very busy, but bartenders were good at slinging out the drinks in a timely fashion. If you have never been to the Skip or haven't walked by it, it is important to note it is an outdoor bar located in the artistic alley known as the "belt". They do have heat lamps for those chilly nights and part of the bar does have a roof if it is raining. There are long benches with tables and chairs, but a lot of people stand as well. Decided to stop by and try the skip this past week after seeing the article in the detroit news. This place didn't disappoint at all. It's owned by the same company that owns "stand by" . The venue isn't that large and the vibe is extremely laid back inside. My favorite part of this place is that rather than trying to be all things to all people it does one thing and it does it great! And that one thing happens to be making cocktails !!! I tried a range of cocktails along with my fiancé , but the two I recommend are the "rain drop " , bc this drink should've come with an umbrella and some flip flops bc it sent me to my island happy place , and earl sweatshirt , which was like a sweet and frothy drink that delighted my tastebuds and left them eager for more. There really seems like no way to go wrong with a cocktail here , it's definitely worth a visit for those who value are good drink . read more
