Fun bar in Downtown Detroit! Good drinks, chill atmosphere, planet earth (?!?!) playing on the screens: what's not to love? Be prepared for it to be packed if you come too late in the evening (like spilling out across the whole alley packed) but as long as you know what you're in for you'll like it! They have some fun frozen cocktails that are perfect for a hot summer evening, I personally couldn't get over the frozen Irish coffee to keep myself up and ready to keep drinking but they had a few other drinks that sounded delicious like the cucumber margarita and the frozen fresh 75. Super super cool spot tucked away in "The Belt", fabulous oasis turned alley. I love the outdoor bar feel...actually, it's not a "feel", it IS an outdoor bar. There is a selection of 4-5 frozen cocktails, one of which is the frozen Irish Coffee and it's amazing. It's like a frappucino with a serious kick. That's my favorite, I must say. There are other craft cocktails on the menu that look really interesting and one day, when I'm over the frozen Irish Coffee, I will do so. There's also a decent selection of beer. There is ample seating and room to just stand and take in the scenery. It looks like there are (overhead) fans for the heat and possibly heaters for when there's a chill in the air, maybe in the fall. It's a must visit spot, for sure. read more

Just want to say how nice it is to have a establishment that doesn't question the customer at all with a concern. My good friend was charged a tip of $100 mistakenly. This was not noticed till a couple days later. When going back to The Skip, James who was working the bar, did not question it at all and said that he would contact his manager Kyle. James also offered us a drink a piece because of our inconvenience. Before finishing our drinks, James came back over and told us that Kyle would be taking care of it and we would not have to worry. Unfortunately this type of customer service is not often seen any more and it was a nice nice welcoming gesture to see. We will both be back and I will definitely share my experience with others. Really great bar with a good food! The beverage selection is wide ranging, and the bartenders were kind and helpful in their suggestions. The tacos are tasty; but the real star is their veggie burrito. I was there 2 days ago, and I can't stop thinking about that perfectly spicy, cheesy, potato dream. They also had a cactus taco on special, which was a strange delight! It's a really cool, unique, and fun spot - especially for the summer. A popular spot and you can pretend you're in NYC being located in the alley next to the Z deck. Limited seating inside but it is open to outdoor seating in the alley with the garage door. Appetizers offered for our event was good enough (not anything to write home about but good to accompany some light fare with drink). Drinks are the raison d'être for this place, of course, and frozen cocktails were very good and hit the spot for hot summer evening. Bartenders were attentive and was skilled at handling the crowd. I paid cash for my $5.50 beer and the bartender said it was $6 and shorted me the $.50. I'm calling bullshit on that and knocking it down a star. The skip is a perfect place to go on a warm spring or summer night out. It's designed so it has a garage-door facade on the front that completely opens to the Belt, a few doors down from its partner Standby. The garage door can be closed in case the weather is too chilly, plus they have heaters on the inside as well. The drink menu is like a less-pretentious version of Standby. They have really good frozen drinks - the cucumber margarita and the Irish coffee are their most popular and really good. The menu also has some specialty cocktails, creative shots, craft beers, wine and boilermakers. My favorite boilermaker is the Blakes El Chavo, which is a mango habanero cider that comes with a tequila shot. The decor and music are really awesome, and it gets pretty packed on weekend nights. Call ahead before you go, on more than one occasion they've been closed during regular business hours due to a private event. read more

Great place year round to grab cocktails, but it really shines in Summer. The drinks are fantastic, but you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't have some food. They often have food behind the bar from the last exec chef from Standby, who also runs a food cart at the Skip during the summer. Not your average food cart. It's fantastic. What a nice place! The Skip is a unique bar in an alley downtown. There is no food, just drinks. The craft cocktails were $9 and really tasty. There were also a variety of frozen drinks which would be perfect for a hot summer day. A lot of people seemed to spill into the alley, but we were able to sit at the bar and watch the bartenders "do their thing" it was enjoyable. Okay, we were at The Skip two days ago, on Wednesday night. My wife and I were in Detroit to celebrate her 45th birthday and see The Shins live. After the show, we went to The Skip. The bartender was so surly, super serious, so gritty, so inner city. We chose two super serious overpriced cocktails, the bartender asked for ID, my wife realized she'd left her's at the hotel. Okay. Zero attempt at customer service, or even friendliness, or anything but a surly super serious Detroit shrug. I think I jokingly said something like, 'Oh well, I'll come back in five minutes and buy another one.' Hoo, that got me a stare. I am almost 50, with a white beard and my wife was celebrating her 45th birthday. Not having proof of something is not the same as not knowing something. For instance, we're clearly not 20. Anyway, I went back five minutes later and as soon as the bartender saw me she walked out from behind the bar and talked to a security guard, which really confused the guy who took my order. I got my drink (essentially for my 45-year-old wife) and the security guard followed me and stood next to me to make sure I drank both the drinks and my wife, celebrating her birthday, sat and watched. It was strange trying to have a birthday conversion with a security guard standing by my elbow. We finished as quickly as we could and left. Ironically, as we walked out of the alley we bumped into The Shins, said hello, and told them not to go to The Skip under any circumstances. read more

If I could give no stars I would. I can't stress enough what a disappointment The Skip has been during my visit in Detroit. I always research areas before I visit and I thought this seemed like a cool place in the Belt. We ubered there yesterday and as we arrived to our frustration they were closed. My biggest pet peeve is not updating a website if you are going to close. A girl said to come back tomorrow at 4 when they would be open. We still wanted to give them a chance so we yet again paid to Uber there today, because the website said open at 4.. again, and as we arrived at 4:30... they were closed. There is no phone number, who doesn't have a phone, but one of the workers was outside and when we explained how bummed we were, and said how we had really wanted to visit, he responded expressing that he didn't need our service anyway. I was so taken back by his rudeness. My family has visited once before and they did not even want to come again but I encouraged them to try it. I definitely will not be back and will be sure friends don't waste there time either. read more
