Interesting cafe/bar atmosphere I arrived around 4pm on a Wednesday and noticed some people working on laptops and a sign that said no laptops/working after 5. I guess daytime is for coffee/lattes and evening is more drinks and food. There is happy hour starting at 5pm, so I was a little too early to get the deal on that. I got a sanfransangria which tasted okay to me, not very sweet. Not a bad spot in the japantown/fillmore area read more

Came for drinks while waiting for a dinner res around the corner. The interior concept is really cute and perfect for coming with friends/catching up, the floating tables/seats especially were really nice vibes. The seats are kind of deteriorating in upholstery though, so it would not be as comfortable sitting in shorts with raw wood poking through. We ordered a beer and sangria, both were honestly unimpressive, especially the sangria, pretty disappointing. The state of the restroom is also a deterrent. read more

Not a bad spot near Japantown for an afternoon coffee or some drinks early in the evening. Given it's location, you can expect some ... Less than spectacular customers. But I haven't had any trouble during my time there, although it might ruin the vibe you're going for. read more

Been here a few times for happy hour. It's close to work, it's cute and not super loud. They only have one bartender most time so there might be a wait if it's super busy. I got the little apple this time around. Nice divey ish drink. They also have coffee and tea which makes it have the coffee shop feel too with people working and studying. Nice chill vibes. Came in as the first stop of my happy hour crawl in Japantown. Decent prices for happy hour. Ended up getting a sangria here. It was okay. Seemed a little watered down. Wanted more fruit forward taste. They have games if you want to play with friends. Tried the pork tacos too. They were kind of dry but decently priced. It's a very chill vibe in here. read more

The Social Study is such a cute, underrated bar in the city! I love their selection of drinks and the aesthetic retro decor. Amazing date night spot and open surprisingly late. :) They have a wide array of wines, beers, and signature cocktails. I got their hot apple cider and it was good! It wasn't strong [:(] but it was definitely delicious [:3]. The chairs built into the wall were a little uncomfy but they looked so chic. The bar projected an anime on the wall on the night that we went and it made for a great vibe. Service was a little slow (it seemed like it was only one person servicing the whole place) but they were friendly and attentive! Would 100% recommend checking the Social Study out if you're in the area! read more

TL;DR: cute spot for quick drinks, they only have wine and beer but they have some interesting combinations for cocktails We stumbled into this spot after walking around Japantown and needing a bit of a breather from the crowds after lunch. This is a super cute spot closer to the Fillmore side and has a good amount of people in there without feeling too packed. Service is friendly and efficient. You order at the counter and can either sit at the bar or carry your drinks to seats. The set up is really cute and the mismatched furniture suits the vibe. We've tried a variety of drinks, from beer and wine to some of the cocktails. They also serve tea and espresso drinks, so their espresso martini has a fresh shot of espresso! The list is quite extensive so I'm sure there is something for everyone. They serve food as well but I haven't had a chance to explore that side of the menu. read more

Came here for HH on a weekday. It's a good intimate space if you are coming in a smaller group but the place itself is intimate and chairs are somewhat uncomfortable. It's nice for conversation but wouldn't stay longer, Our group was 3 which already felt cramped. They do have board games and happy hour food options. Staff was friendly it was good crowd inside. Paid street parking available which I believe ends at 6 pm but can't remember from the top of my head. Sanfrangria was a watered down from the ice. I really love the concept of this hybrid study/social bar but the execution fell a little flat for me. I've been here a few times and the vibes are very cozy, but the tables don't feel big enough for any studying (some really barely fit a laptop). They're also very strict about no laptops after 5pm which is a bummer as they could have probably capitalized on more customers who are looking for a work café option open in the evening. Socializing wise, it's a cute spot with a fun menu. I like the winetails (some are like fizzy ciders) but I'd stay away from the sangrias (way too sweet and doesn't taste fresh). I've played some board games here with friends and had a good time but never find myself staying long tbh since the seats are kind of uncomfortable and gets cramped. read more

I first heard if this spot from a co-worker that insisted we try this place out. I purposely avoided looking up reviews on the place because I wanted to form an honest and unbiased opinion. I really can't put into words what a vibe this place is. From the exposed brick walls to the reclaimed wood tables, floors etc. the whole place felt "lived in" and upbeat. The drinks and service were top tier, and the curated small bites menu of snacks were a perfect accompaniment to the evening. If you are in the area, or want to pregame before a night out in the Fillmore or Japantown, this is a good place to kick the night into gear. read more

Husband and I had 24 hours solo out on the town and checked out this place due to its varied menu. The space is small, inviting and compact. We ordered the nibbles trio, Rueben sandwich, the ginger limeade and a spiked apple cider (I forgot the official name). Ooh and we topped it all off with their chocolate mousse. I would order everything again except maybe the ginger limeade. I do think likely I just received an accidentally watered down batch, because it tasted more like flavored water than a limeade. However, everything else was delicious. Staff were friendly and efficient. It was amazing to watch how they dealt with the small kitchen and bar space yet still managed to serve all the patrons with ease. Really cute cafe/lounge near Japantown. My friend and I ducked into this bar on a rainy afternoon to grab a quick drink before dinner. I love that they have wine and soju based cocktails if you're looking for a lighter drink. I got the yellow diamond with white wine and prosecco which was great and really bright with the orange peel without being too sweet. I got the Japantown Reuben and it wasn't the best but wasn't terrible either. I've had better Reuben and I wouldn't recommend this Reuben over others. The vibes of this place are immaculate though. I sat with my Reuben and a mocha and had a great time just marveling at the beauty and the books in this space. Very nice interior with a variety of seatings including the interesting wall seats. Pretty small space and can get pretty crowded so if you're planning on having a lot of books/materials out just keep this in mind. Tried their ginger limeade which I saw a number of people drinking, it was okay. I've heard good things about their study snacks, so if I stop by again I will likely try those out. read more

The Social Study is definitely a bar I can see myself making my little "home away from home" given its cozy neighborhood vibes and versatility. It provides a great space during the day as a cafe to work or read, and at night, it becomes an intimate wine bar. I like that it doesn't get loud/crowded here so the space is perfect for conversation, making it ideal for date nights or unwinding with friends. It's also a nice place to come on your own! I came by this place with a friend to study during the day and finish the night with a cocktail. While the place has a cool vibe, it is a tad too dark to study, even during the day. There also aren't many seats available, so come early if you want to get a spot to work at. However, the daytime drink options, e.g. coffee and teas, were very refreshing. At 5pm, all laptops are no longer allowed, and the place becomes an intimate social area. Love the fusion-style drink options! read more

It's hard to find a chill place to just relax with friends or read in the evening after cafes and coffee shops close, but that's why we have the The Social Study! The vibes inside are not at all rowdy but also not silent - I'd say it has a nice casual and laidback ambiance. I caught up with a couple friends and we really enjoyed our time here. The cookies were freshly baked and came out warm. More places honestly need to start serving milk and cookies! read more

My favorite cafe / late night bar in the city!!! The vibes are just amazing, so cozy and friendly! I've only had the pleasure of interacting with Harmony and Erin, but I'm sure the rest of their staff are just as awesome. My favorite food item is the Japantown Reuben, though the BLT and Cuban Sliders are also good contenders! I've heard the bread pudding is also drool worthy Don't sleep on the chai -- both iced and hot are tasty! I've tried most of their coffee drinks and they're also yummy, but I always go back to the chai. Would highly highly recommend this place -- give it a chance and you won't be disappointed! read more

Wanted to find a cafe and space to do some work in and ended up checking out The Social Study. To my pleasant surprise, there was so much room to sit, a menu full of food and drink items, and the warmest staff. You'll notice when you sit that laptops and work computers are not allowed on tables after 5 and you have to order another item after 90 minutes of sitting. I actually don't mind these rules since I very rarely get work done at a cafe, plus it gives me a reason to try different things on the menu. The Social Study is one of those special spots I kinda want to gate-keep, but I won't because they deserve the applause. We came in on a weekday to crack out some work on our computers, before their 5pm lap-top ban that's enforced in most areas including the bar, making way for their after work bar crowd, for which they lower the lighting and turn on a movie from a projector that plays on a brick wall. Posted up at the bar, we ordered their cheese plate / small charcuterie, honey latte and Americano. The honey latte goes well with that delicious platter of goodies. I'm sure wine would pair well too. It was Taco Tuesday, so we took advantage and enjoyed their three veg tacos with a beer of choice from their tap. The guy at the bar (who is awesome) told us that the lady who makes their tacos used to own a nice taco place, and the quality and craftsmanship of these tacos speak to that. Really didn't love my experience at the Social Study. The interior is cute, but you can't really sit on the chairs on the wall because they're so small - and the interior is very woody and chunky, so it doesn't feel comfortable. Service was a little rude. I tried the cheese board. Really awful - super dry cheeses and nothing special. Small portions too :/ The chai was okay and the interior was cute. That's where my two stars come from! read more

This place is so cozy! My bestie and I decided to stop in for a drink after dinner in Japantown. It was busy, but still relaxed enough to grab a seat at the bar. This place served cocktails with beer, wine, soju and sake bases. I got a tequila infused sake drink with sage and honey, and my friend got a Prince inspired drink with plum notes. It was a wonderful place to chat and drink with ghibli movies playing in the background. We also had a lovely conversation with our bartender Brandon. This is my second time this week visiting The Social Study. Both times they've played some awesome music! It sets the tone in this really unique bar. The service is pretty quick, and they serve beautifully crafted drinks, and fresh real food. I'm pretty sure all orders are fresh made upon order, no microwaves. I ordered cookies and milk and the cookies baked for about 10 minutes and served super warm. I was in remote work mode heaven with that little treat! By 5pm computers are not allowed at the bar. have always walked past this cafe/bar on my way to the muni bus stop, finally had a chance to stop inside for a bit. came at 1pm on a saturday, they weren't selling a lot of coffee options, but the iced chai latte was honestly amazing. I really enjoyed the relaxed/cozy vibes, space is perfect to catch up with friends, they also have board games available. though music was a bit loud to have conversations easily. they do disallow laptops after 5pm, so might not necessarily be the best study spot. read more

The bar is dimly lit with a cozy feel. There is no table service so we ordered at the bar and was told to come back in two minutes to pick-up our drinks. I ordered the night market (song cai dry gin, cucumber lemongrass shrub, lemon lime and Thai chili. It was light with a mix of sweet and tart, perfect for the warm day. We only stayed long enough for one drink so I am looking forward to coming back soon to hangout longer and try other cocktails.

But hey, pop in your headphones or embrace the cozy, bustling atmosphere. The place has a lot of character and isn't just a comercial spot Now, onto the tacos. While they offer three options - chicken, veggie potato, and carnitas - here's the catch: you can only choose one per order. A minor gripe, indeed. But fear not, because the tacos themselves are pretty good. Shoutout to Mateo, the friendly bartender who made the experience even better. Five stars for Mateo! It features brick walls, a variety of seating styles, colorful pictures, a blue leather wall, and more! I recommend the honey latte and the bread pudding with whipped cream. I'm not sure if they change the bread pudding flavor, but I had caramelized apples when I ordered it. At night, the place becomes different with more drink options on the menu. To break up the "coffe/wifi shop" monotony I popped into The Social Study to do some homework last week . The service is great, the decor is pretty cool, and for a bar, this is actually a great place to get some work done due to it not being a traditional "bar". Most of the patrons are young professionals and everyone is quietly working on whatever it is they're working on. The only thing keeping it from being a 5 star is the volume of the music; it's two notches too loud to effectively concentrate, at least for me. read more

Great atmosphere to bring a laptop or thick book and get to work. If you have work to accomplish and want to enjoy a beverage this is your place 5 stars because its exactly what you expect. I'm really digging this space on a random block off Fillmore! Great addition to the area. It's super chill, has high ceilings and a wall of books. Assortment of beers, wines, beertails and winetails. I REALLY hate leave a 3 star review because the food was great (I had the Fillmore shady) and I also loved the whole cozy library vibe the place has but the service was really slow. It took about 15 minutes for someone to come and take our order and it took another twenty minutes for our food to arrive. Adorable. Really adorable. The only drawback is the location, as it's a bit hidden and in a not-the-best part of the Fillmore, tucked behind the area where Geary goes under the overpass. The decor is very cute and chairs fold out from the cushioned walls (this really surprised me). They have a few board games lying around too, for group activities.
