Cute small wine bar in the Hayes valley! They have a small space indoors with the main bar and a few tables along the wall. There are more seats outside but it was super cold when we came. It was actually pretty full but the waiters were so nice to grab an extra stool from the back so we could be seated at the bar. We got a few glasses of wine including a nice cab and pino blend. Was there to try out Outta Sight pizza, by Eric, who is my partner's friend. I've tried it once before when he was experimenting with flavors and was trying to see what people ordered/loved the most. Tbh, they were all good. We knew what we wanted upon arrival, which were the Madonna and the Phoebe. Both were beyond tasty! The first time I don't use chili pepper in a very long time (and not because they didn't have any more packets). We lucked out with a few other items: the flan, where the texture reminds we of mochi --mmm; some jalapeño cheese bread, with some rich marinara sauce x_x; and some shoestring fries -- think Mickey D's, but 100x better! Yeah, really. We paired the food with some crispy white (my preference due to reduced sulfates) wine, recommended by the waiter. It was low in acidity, so great with the food. Forgot the name, sorry. Why 4 stars? Only because the glass per wine was a little higher than ideal for me. That's all, but that matters to me! Go before Outta Sight finds a more solidified location! This is an adorable wine shop, with a very cozy atmosphere for any occasion. I have to admit, I looked at this place a few times and COMPLETELY overlooked the fact that they had pizza. Outta Sight Pizza operates inside Fig & Thistle, and kinda feels like a secret only the locals know about! Outta Sight Pizza is the best NYC-style pizza I've had in downtown SF. The pizza is a big overpriced, but worth it. We ordered "The Orchard" and their rosemary cream honey sauce was indescribable. The waiter told us it won an award for its flavors. I'm updating my review SOLELY for the wine bar aspect of this place, not outta sight pizza, which remains one of my absolute favorite pizzas in the city. Unfortunately I've had a few poor experiences here since my first review. I've been here a total of 8-10 times now (we live about 10m walk and we love the pizza :)). Most of our bad experiences have had to do with takeout and the employees. We did come with a group of friends (total of 6 ppl) and they couldn't seat us for an hour. We then asked if we could order a few pizzas to go and they said no, or rather that it would take over an hour bc they prioritize in restaurant. While that sucks it does make sense, but they were super rude about it which i don't love. Again these are all fig and thistle wine bar employees. Last week we ordered take out (which we almost weren't able to get bc the restaurant was supposedly busy). I asked them to add Garlic to the vodka pizza (which they def have bc it's on half their pizzas). She told me she'd have to check with the kitchen. When i got there there was no garlic, the pizza was super duper cold (almost as if they don't even keep it warm On the oven or a warmer), and the dude was once again, hella rude. They also forgot my ranch but didn't realize til i got home, and that shit costs $3! And one last thing to keep in mind, they add a 20% gratuity... FOR TAKE OUT!!! I always always tip for takeout but they should not force you to tip 20% for takeout, and if so that better be going straight to the kitchen. Anyways, outta sight pizza is closing their pop up here this weekend so while I'll probably eat here all week, I'll probably never be back again after that. the wine bar offers absolutely nothing unique I'd come for. Slow & mediocre service, coupled with underwhelming & overpriced food renders this place "to-avoid" on a casual night at best. This was my first time eating here and will probably be my last. The wait time to be seated outside wasn't an issue at all. However, the wait time for our pizzas to come was pretty unrealistic. I mean what are the cooks doing back there? Stomping the tomatoes in the back? Most likely they forgot it in the oven because the crust was burnt to a crisp. Not to mention that after the order was put in, which the staff was urging us to do every 2 minutes. They barely tended to us at all. And upon the request of some additional olive oil so that we can drizzle it on the pizza, the server declined because "Unfortunately, there is no way to ring it up." I am very sorry, but why would you even charge me for a little olive oil? Other establishments have never charged for such a small condiment. Maybe the waiter was just lazy. All this to say that the inflated prices here don't justify the quality of food and service at all. Hard pass! read more

Brought friends here after I heard about this pizza joint and it lived up to expectations! The pies were thin, NY style pizzas and were really well done. Light and airy but with tons of flavor and a good crisp on the bottom and crust. I believe the menu rotates from time to time with different pizza options but we got the Madonna, Ida, and Phoebe. The Ida was the crowd favorite - really unique pizza that was was reminiscent of elote. But all of them were dank, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. A little overpriced and stuffy, but good wine and bites. Not the most exciting place in the neighborhood but good for a weeknight drink. The wine is great and that's really the highlight, in addition to very healthy, if not heavy, pours. Despite that, it's still on the pricey side but not out of place in the neighborhood. Food menu is very limited and the cheese plate is good for 2 to 3 to share. Our waiter seemed grumpy and impatient but it's hard to blame him since he was playing vaccine bouncer, bartender, and waiter for the whole place alone. Not crowded on a weeknight so it wasn't too slow, but when it's busy on a weekend you should plan to linger a while. For better food and just as good wine there are other spots on the block, but it's a pleasant place to sit for a glass of wine. We showed up at 9 on a Wednesday (closes at 10) and there were no issues as far as us entering and ordering a glass. The kitchen was already closed but we expected that with showing up on the later end. There were QR codes readily available to browse the menu and the service was super quick + nice. A great variety of wines available without it being overwhelming (this is key as too many can cause decision paralysis!). I got the Sauv Blanc which I loved and would definitely get again. Fig and Thistle was fun, an overall good vibe, and is charming too. I ordered 2 glasses, their orange wine, and their cheapest red. Both were so good, I really enjoy orange wine but cannot seem to find it everywhere I go. The red was on the drier side and was super enjoyable. Overall, their wine selection was fantastic and had everything I was looking for and more. I was expecting this to be just a good wine bar, but this was more than that. The food was fantastic too. We got two pizzas- the cheese one and the pepperoni one. Both were amazing, crunchy crust, flavorful sauce, and cheese, toppings but not too many. If you want to sip wine and get some fantastic food, look no further. Our server was great and brought everything timely. I have no complaints at all about this place. The newer location offers more space, though candidly I miss the intimacy and charm of the older location next door (which is now a dispensary). My third stop on an impromptu bar crawl in Hayes Valley. I had met up with a girlfriend after dinner and we decided to explore the area. Using mainly Yelp to pick our spots, we decided to visit Fig & Thistle on Wednesday, July 12th around 10pm. We ordered at the bar and then found a seat on the lower part of the bunk bed in the corner. (At least I think it was a bunk bed. My time here is a little hazy.) *The Other Man 2016 Carbonic Zinfandel, Mendocino ($14 glass) *Purity 2014 Old Vine Carignan, Antioch, Contra Costa County ($13 glass) I wasn't familiar with any of the wines, so I just picked two glasses based on the names. One of them was very light, so I didn't enjoy it as much. I'm not familiar with carbonic wines. Honestly, I'm not even sure what that means, but judging from the year, I'm guessing the other man was the lighter one. We had been drinking cocktails at our two previous stops, so this was definitely not the full bodied and bold wine we wanted. The purity was good though. Not sure if we thought it was good just in comparison, but we enjoyed that glass. Very cute neighborhood bar. The atmosphere was dimly lit, but cozy. I vaguely recall there being hanging lights around the bed? Like the white Christmas lights you wrap around banisters, etc. Very pretty and an little romantic. Definitely a fun third stop. read more

I didn't try any of their snacks, but they have the basics like charcuterie and popcorn. We tried two of their flights, one that featured a specific winemaker's selection and another that was selected off their menu of bubblies, rose, whites, and reds. Each was $15, which I thought was reasonable, especially since the wines we tried were all so good. I liked this place because of how good the service was. Upon arriving, someone immediately waved us down with a menu and consistently checked up on us when he saw our glasses were empty. I hate going to bars and awkwardly hovering around until a bartender deigns to pay attention to me. What a charming wine/champagne/beer bar that can be found down an alley in Hayes Valley. You'll be lucky if you can find an open spot to sit and enjoy a good selection of red, white, rose, sparkling wines and beers. This was the last stop of the night for me and a new friend. Grab a menu from the bartender before seating (or find your seat first then get a menu from the bar). There are mostly bar seats and high table bar seating. There is one cozy couch-like spot underneath what reminded me of a bunk bed frame. The atmosphere is nice for a nighttime visit -- dimly lit, dark, non-cluttered decor laid about. Noise level -- you're able to have a good conversation without having to raise your voice. I ordered a glass of sparkling -- I was really pleasantly surprised when it came back in a wine glass (really great!!) I love bubbles :D If you go on their website and click under EVENTS, you'll find some super neat things coming up this month and thereafter. Came here to meet friends for a quick drink after work and was totally charmed. Small but quaint with unique seating arrangements and a cozy atmosphere. We sat at the high top long table which is right in the center of the bar, but there is also bar seating, a few tables, an interesting bed/bench type of seat and a window seat. All are mostly wood which gives a great rustic feel. What I appreciated most was the unique selection of wines, while a short list, diverse in character and taste. Something about this place reminds me of Beacon Hill, Boston. If you don't believe it, just google Beacon Hill Boston and see the images of the street. I ought to know. I spent a bit of time there last year and had gotten to know all the neighbors after my morning coffee and breakfast at the Paramount. After City Arts and Lectures (it was John Waters, very good), the evening was winding down and one could very quickly conclude that Thursday night in San Francisco is a ghost town. One would be right. At 9 PM the place is nearly deserted. Suits me just fine. A large table was waiting for me. So I ordered the mix plate of charcuterie and cheese. As I have finally reached the cross road of white vs. red, I have finally gotten on the band wagon of white. The staff recommends a Portuguese white as it's more stone fruity. He's right, I liked it more than the Rose from Sonoma. The bunk bed is odd, it pretty much faces directly at me from where I'm sitting. It was empty for a little bit then a couple, in their 20s, showed up. Looking around, this is a bit of a millennial crowd, more on the sophisticated side of the spectrum, given the attire and the mannerism, but still, very young. The bar serves a fairly good amount of beer on tap, suitably so, to serve the aforementioned clientele. It's tucked away, right next to my last summer's crush, Monsieur Benjamin. For people like me who wants a little privacy, while enjoying a glass of wine, it's perfect. Find that big table in the middle that faces out, you can do quite a bit of people watching, without getting the feeling that you are being watched. read more

Sad to say, Fig and Thistle used to be this charming gem in an alley way, now it's taken up ownership with Outtasight Pizza on Gough (I don't really understand the arrangement and it's unclear when you go in) It's a cute place with nice evening ambience BUT here's the problem: A friend and I went there for just a drink at the bar and were charged an automatic 20% gratuity! So 2 drinks that should have been a decent price (and would have added a tip) were now $45 for 2 teeny glasses of wine. Not OK. Even though I'm not a huge fan of auto gratuity in general, I get it for a meal, but not for alcohol only. While this may sound petty, it's not, it's the principle that drinks, which are already marked up 25% and one easy order vs. food and anything complex. I won't be going back there anymore. read more
