Stopped by for lunch and grabbed a plate of Oxtails which came with two sides and cornbread. I opted for the Mac n Cheese and the Cabbage. I also got a side order of just the BBQ ribs as well and found that the portions were very generous and the price was a steal!!! The oxtails were tender and the Mac n Cheese was solid and the Cabbage also was seasoned well. Flavor wise, I am a little particular as my all-time favorite Jamaican food spot was back in Boston but this was definitely a strong contender. The BBQ ribs were on the sweeter end and were not my personal favorite. The cornbread was a bit dry but coupled with the meal it worked out once incorporated. I enjoyed the veggie plate, for which you can choose any four of the vegetarian sides. Their mac and cheese was pleasantly creamy. Not much of a top layer, but it paired well with the other items. The jollof rice was flavorful, but not spicy. The collard greens were a little salty, but tasty and well seasoned. I also enjoyed their fresh squeezed lemonade. I appreciated that they didn't add a bunch of ice to water it down. It was tart and not too sugary. I got the bbq ribs platter with Mac and mashed potatoes. Mac and cheese was great. The BBQ sauce was amazing but the ribs left something to be desired because there was barely any meat on the bone. The mashed potatoes I'd skip on, they had a hint of boxed flavor which was a total turnoff. I'd totally come back to try their other plates though! I'm giving this place 1 stars only because the food is not bad. My family has been using this place for our family repast over the years. The last funeral we had we called them right up and place an order for delivery like we always do. We ordered chicken, fish, green beans, salad, potato salad, yams, and mac and cheese. During the funeral the food was delivered while someone in the church collected it for us. Five minutes later I was pulled out of the service because they notice something was wrong. When I went to check the order the they everything seemed fine until i noticed they only delivered a half pan of mac and cheese and a half pan of yams when we ordered a pan and a half of booth. When I called up Chef to find out wheres the rest of the order I was told it would take 2 hours to get it and that it's not a big deal; it's only mac and cheese and yams. But ALL black people know the mac and cheese and yams are the main dishes at an event over the protein. Chef also had the nerve to ask for his balance after we had to run around to find food to feed the 100 plus people that were there, on top of me missing the funeral services because I had to fix his fuck up. A goodbye to my loved one that I was not able to give. Before this event I would've recommended this place but after this experience we will be going with Bed Stuy fish fry moving fwd. We ordered several different dishes so we could mix and match our dinner. Had the oxtail, beef ribs, and turkey wings for our meats. For the sides, we had mac n cheese, cabbage, potato salad, and white rice. All the meats were delicious, very different taste than what I'm used to and I loved it. The ribs sauce had a sweetness to it. I didn't enjoy the cabbage or potato salad, which is why I gave a 4. but the mac n cheese was amazing. This is a small quaint restaurant that has delicious soul food that is hot and ready. I came here for take-out and just found it by searching for a soul food spot in the downtown Brooklyn area and it did not disappoint! They had a hot food section where you can choose from a variety of meats including curry goat, jerk chicken, baked chicken and stews. The sweet potatoes were so perfectly made, they reminded me of my childhood. The Mac and cheese was extra cheesy and unlike any other soul food restaurant I've ever been to because it was moist! I also ordered string beans and the meal came with a bread that looked like banana bread. I am definitely coming here again and it will be my go to place from now on. My first time ordering from here for delivery. I got a meatloaf lunch special with 2 sides; mashed potatoes and green beans. I also ordered a peach cobbler but I'm assuming they were out of it because it was refunded to me before my order arrived. I was so looking forward to it but I will try another dessert next time. The meatloaf was moist and had good flavor although I do think the sauce was very barbecue-like but that didn't make it bad, just not my preference. Mashed potatoes were creamy, green beans had good flavor & they gave me a side piece of cornbread as well. Had this for lunch the other day after a co worker of mine gave me the Salmon Croquettes (which are amazing). When ordering on seamless, I ordered Salmon, Macaroni Salad and Collard Greens. Now what I got, wasn't that, I actually got Marconi & Cheese, which I originally wanted. The meal came packed well and it was warm. Now onto the food: the Salmon was the best part, then the greens and then the Mac. The mac was just missing something. Yes yes yes yes yes. I visited this place twice in the span of 2 days while visiting New York. The food was fresh and hot on the line. From what I sampled the yams, jerk chicken, oxtail, rice and peas, and cornbread were all delicious. I wouldn't recommend the collard greens as they look like they are straight from the can. The service I received was that of southern hospitality. The worker offered to let me sample the products until I was satisfied with what I tasted. She even gave me an extra piece of cornbread! I'm not a fan of the mac and cheese at all, it wasn't very flavorful but the other menu items were delicious. In my experience eating at soul food restaurants, the food is often over seasoned. I appreciated that the greens, turkey wings and candied yams were flavorful but not overbearing. So I would definitely recommend trying the food here. So happy when I found out there was a HALAL option for soul food Love everything we tried here, and want to come back more to try other meat dishes and sides. The only issue is that it is soooo filling you literally need to come with an empty stomach or else u got leftovers for days. Yams were good, but wish there was a little less of it and more of the Mac and cheese as it can get you full very quickly. Ribs were excellent, not too much bone, and also the meat was so tender it was literally falling off. The gravy from the ribs mixed with the sides is sooo good. The jerk chicken is the spiciest meat option they have and it's not actually spicy but really good nonetheless. A bit dry so wish they had some kind of sauce that comes with it. They also sell desserts (which we didn't get to try) and drinks ($2 each - lemonade, a punch?, and sweet tea). Lemonade (freshly squeezed) was a bit too tart for me, I usually like it sweeter, but good regardless. Staff here are very accommodating and friendly and helped us choose what to order Lots of people constantly coming and going (that's how you know it's good) and also heard that a couple of the patrons coming in were regulars (and that was just within the hour or so we were there!). It's mostly a get your food and go kinda spot but there's 2 small tables inside and some smaller tables and chairs outside if you wish to dine in. A) I'm a sucker for well-made soul food. B) This more than hits the spot. Verdict? The Soul Spot definitely lives up to its name. Almost everything I've eaten from here has given me warm inner fuzzies. No, not in a bad was-that-mold way. Definitely in a happy and comforting way. The jerk chicken is tasty, well spiced, and fall-off-the-bone tender. The meatloaf is a massive brick of meat (slightly firmer than I'd like but still good) with a tasty glaze. The chicken and dumplings is the epitome of comfort food. The oxtail is very tender and flavorful. The macaroni and cheese is the perfect combination of cheesy, gooey, and wonderful. I'm a big fan of their collard greens, as well as their okra with stewed tomatoes. The plantains are missing that nice bit of crisp and caramelization, but they're still soft and sweet. Each meal also comes with cornbread that's quite good and makes its small size seem like a bit of a tease. You get a platter of protein, two sides, and cornbread, all for around $12 and easily splittable for two meals. All hail affordable yet wonderfully delicious food! P.S. Im visiting from Indy and I tried this place based in a recommendation from a complete stranger a while ago. It just so happens that was a few blocks from where Im staying. I had the fried chicken, greens and sweet potatoes and it was delicious! The staff was friendly and offered me an extra corn bread because I mentioned that I was splitting the meal with someone else. The owner was super friendly and offered suggestions based on what my friend and I had a taste for/dietary restrictions. He even let me sample a few items that I was curious about.
