I really like Sparrow Bakery but having said that I've become disappointed in this particular location. The last two times I have been here the food hasn't been the usual quality they are known for. This morning it was burnt breakfast bacon croissants that seemed rather large for the contents inside. Speaking of contents, not much substance except for a good amount of arugula. Stopped in for lunch after hearing such nice things. The staff was very friendly and attentive....however...perhaps the worst value for lunch that I've had in Bend. Ordered the chicken salad on a croissant....what a joke! There was perhaps a tablespoon of chicken salad on each half of the sandwich. Loved our quick stop in to the sparrow bakery. All employees are super friendly and outgoing. We got their vanilla bean latte which was made very well. We purchased various baked goods from this bakery and we would definitely go back. They have great breakfast sandwiches and a large variety of baked goods and treats. The Ocean Roll is the bomb and the breakfast sandwich is delicious my only real and strong complaint is that they now charge for refills on coffee! After paying $8.50 for a sandwich and over $4.00 for the roll, another $2.75 for the 1st cup of coffee. Really haven't I already paid for the 2nd cup?! Beautiful space but I have to say I kind of like the original location a bit better, even though there is very little space to sit there. I don't feel like I'm in Bend at this location, I feel like I'm in a big city- maybe San Francisco? Anyhow, their baked goods are damn, damn good. I'm stuck on the ocean rolls, which are a meal at $3.65. I would really like to try the breakfast sandwiches, but I doubt I will at $8.50. $8.50 for a breakfast croissant sandwich is the norm in big cities but come on, this is Bend! The quality is consistent with their original location. Their service has always been a bit slow and not overly friendly, so I was expecting that. What dropped off a star for me was how messy the place was: Crumbs everywhere! And we were there at a slow time of day - surely they should be sweeping up a bit in between rush hours? There were flakes of pastry all over the table, chairs, and floor where we first sat down. We ended up moving to a better location next to a window, and there was a thick layer of crumbs on the window sill as well as crumbs on the chair! I'm not a neat freak. I've been there a few times now. Each time the service has ranged from reasonably responsive and timely to slow and random. The staff is pleasant and courteous but orders can take longer than expected. During one of my visits the table I was at had not been cleaned and the place was not all that busy. On the food front I've never gone wrong with the Ocean Roll or a loaf of there bread. Each our consistently delicious. I recently had the Monte Cristo sandwich. The toasted bread was soaked with butter. It was greasy sandwich because of this. This other ingredients were high quality and delicious but the sandwich was a miss because of the excessive butter. I'm hoping they can bring the NWX bakery to the same high quality as there original place because Sparrow Bakery. I'm a fan of their baked goods but the cafe part needs more attention. read more

I never write bad reviews (I don't even like the concept of yelp in general because I work in the industry) but I feel disappointed by this place today. The one star does not reflect the food, but the service. Me and my husband came in with our baby in her carrier, and the place was not busy except for the line out the door. We were waiting at the back of the line and I talked to my husband about sitting down on a chair with our baby while he waited because the carrier is so heavy. The girl bussing tables overheard me talking about sitting down before ordering and took it upon herself to rudely come over to us and tell us we can't sit down before ordering. She also said it while chewing on some food (so unprofessional.) I'm upset because this is NW Crossing, a FAMILY neighborhood. I understand that places have rules in order to function, but she at least could've offered a place for me to sit while I was struggling to hold my baby instead of inserting herself into a conversation she didn't need to be part of. I'll still be back because the BOH does an excellent job, but FOH is lackluster and does not represent what this place is all about. read more

Plane croissant was good but not what I'm looking for in a croissant. Too soft and lacked the crisp outside I want. I like mine to shatter when I bite into them. Chocolate croissant was mediocre. Had breakfast at the new Sparrow Bakery in Northwest Crossing on Christmas Eve. The ocean rolls that we had were excellent and the Stumptown cocc eye was delicious. Kinda strange out if the way location but we found it. Cute outdoor seating, looked like it would be fun when they light up the fire pit. My husband had The bacon breakfast sandwich. With a lovely poached egg. He would give the sandwich five stars. He wouldn't even share a single bite me. I had the ham and cheese croissant which was light and flaky and a perfect serving size for breakfast. I had an iced chai which was spicier than others I have had and I enjoyed it. The Sparrow Bakery was at the Saturday Farmers Market in Bend and their stand was in front of their store. I like the person manning the booth very knowable on the various breads. There was 4 or 5 different baguettes and he educated me in the various types and which one would go with Balsamic Vinegar, Cheese, and Olive Oil.
