Who knew one could find Paris quality croissants in Bend, Oregon? We were in town for our family reunion and two summers ago we held it at the Paris Olympics so our point of comparison is valid. Twice I went to M's to pick up a large assortment of pastries for our family of 21 and everything was outstanding and compared favorably to the best we had in France. We were staying at the Riverhouse Lodge and it was an easy 7 minute drive to get to the Old Mill location with plenty of parking. Both days no chocolate/almond croissant, which was sad. Standouts: - almond croissant 5/5 - chocolate croissant 5/5 - ham and cheese croissant 5/5 - gochujang twist 5*5 (so unique and so bummed they didn't have it the second day) - kouigh amman 5/5 - almond pecan sandie 5/5 Solid choices: - monkey bread 4/5 (a bit smaller than what I'm used to and more bready than pastry, no frosting as I'm more used to seeing) - milk bread 4/5 (solid offering) - blueberry scone 4/5 (a little bit too fruit forward so very messy to eat but still yummy) - blueberry buckwheat muffin 4/5 (also a bit too fruit forward so very messy to eat, but still yummy) We didn't try any of their breads but the selection looks great! read more

I've bought M's Bakery bread from a grocery outlet (Newport Ave Market) and found it to be quite good. This week I stopped in at the Old Mill location itself for coffee and a couple pastries. - Cinnamon roll: comes drenched in sugar glaze (as is proper). Delicious. - Almond croissant: Tasty with good flakiness. There were a lot of other pastries available that I would definitely try. Coffee was decent, too. read more

Lovely selection of goodies available here, and a very friendly staff to walk you thru the offerings. We only tried a few and would highly recommend the (seasonal) rhubarb pink peppercorn cruffin and blueberry buckwheat muffin. Prices were pretty high, but these were high quality, and right next to the river trail. Rhubarb pink peppercorn cruffin - not my first cruffin and this was a beautiful rendition - lightly sweetened, floral, bright with a spot-on pastry. Blueberry buckwheat muffin - still moist with a nice crust when enjoyed the day after. Not too sweet, a little nutty. Got a baguette, kouign Amman, and monkey bread and all were just ok. The baguette wasn't very flavorful, the kouign Amman was not as caramelized, and the monkey bread wasn't as gooey as expected. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing and these days I need to try and ration my sweets hahaha. Got these items at the Wednesday farmers market--don't know if they would be better if purchased on site at their brick and mortar, but don't feel the need to do a re-do. read more

The bakery is located inside of the old mill mall. Parking was very easy and the staff were super friendly. I got their chai latte and Apple pie, both were decent. The only downside was the semi cleaned water glass that still has lipstick mark from the previous customer. Other than that I would still come here again. read more

We were originally to go to another breakfast cafe but it was closed on Mon-tues . And luckily someone suggested M's Bakery . It was a wonderful experience . We ordered the egg sandwich , the avocado sandwich , the ham and cheese croissant , chocolate croissants , regular croissant , cinnamon rolls . Good choice for a super filling steak burrito that lasted most of the day. Bonus - get a loaf to go. One of life's great indulgences is fresh baked bread. Aside from the fact that the owner contacted me to offer to make amends for the bum loaf I got, I'm happy to upgrade my review for a number of reasons. The owners amends was very generous and the replacement Sesame Loaf I got was delicious. However, when I picked it up, I decided to try their tuna sandwich. We needed some really good bread and we found it!! We got an olive and a traditional sourdough. Although on the pricey side they were absolutely delicious. Staff was very nice! Great little shop. This place literally became my addiction while I was in town. Incredible staff, a clean location, and just delicious products. OK, let's talk pastry. The Kouign Amann is basically a croissant that has been pressed into what looks like a large muffin tin, but has vanilla sugar poured on top of it while baking. This creates a crispy sugar shell on the outside, and a soft delicate croissant dough on the inside. It's topped with a little bit of sea salt. It is just such a delightful mix of flavors and textures that I found myself absolutely loving this thing. The Marion Berry scone was absolutely wonderful. I eat a lot of scones, and one of my biggest complaint is when someone uses the wrong kind of flour and it turns into a tough scone. These guys actually knew what they were doing. The scone was crispy on the outside thanks to a sugar glaze, and soft and crumbly on the inside. It was absolutely incredible and wonderfully enjoyable. Then there was the almond croissant. This was my least favorite. While their croissant dough is good, I'm not particularly happy with the amount of almond paste, or its composure. I think this one is really hard to get right, and I'm always torn between people that put a smear like this business does, and other others that just mix it into the dough. Either way it was enjoyable, just a little different than what I would typically expect from an almond croissant. Lastly, the gluten-free sourdough. This was actually the best gluten-free sourdough I've ever eaten. Usually gluten-free bread is gummy on the inside and Baker's really struggle to get the texture right. But they absolutely nailed it. Not only was the crumb beautiful and open, but the bread didn't seem overly dense for a gluten-free bread. Don't get me wrong it was a little dense because it's gluten-free, but it was lighter than most gluten-free bread. Located in the Old Mill Shops area with convenient (ish) parking and easy access, owned by a young husband and wife who first met working at Four Seasons in Scottsdale and with a menu and vibe that hints in a delicious way at his home country of Mexico. We loved this little bakery when we popped in one morning to pick up take away to treat ourselves and a friend in Bend during a visit in April. Taking the time to post my comments now, in advance of our next visit this week, as sort of counterpoint to some 'foot stomping' lower starred reviews awarded because the bakery sometimes sells out of products earlier than some customers think is appropriate. Yep, that will happen a young owner run bakery when they are starting out because the closer they get to that scratch-zero inventory left at the end of the day, the better it is for their bottom line and ability to stay in business in early days. Given this brick and mortar has only been in place six months, although their wares have been available at some retailers like Market of Choice for a while before that, it seems reasonable that they are still learning how much to bake levels. I get it. GOOD EATS: There is much to enjoy here and we liked every pastry of the five kinds we took with us to share. (They make a version of Kouign Amann, a fav of ours, and may be the only place in Bend that does.) We also enjoyed the olive bread, if you want them to slice it you'll have to wait until after XX:00 because it needs to be completely cool out of the oven before they can, so we took our loaf to go. The biggest surprise is they have wonderful salads (the two we took to go easily fed three people at lunch) and we learned that when we pivtoed after the little surprise that they didn't offer sandwiches on their bread, a la Sparrow Bakery or Village Baker. If that's what you want, you'll need to hit up one of those others. And while we waited on our to go order to be packaged up and the salads to be made we also enjoyed a good cortado along with the Mexican vibe music of just the right mix for a morning visit. SERVICE: Really friendly counter service. And given the ability to see into the baking space from the front windows, it looks as if they are providing employment for several local people to participate in that craft. BEND "CRED": My husband and I started being visitors to Bend in the later 1980's, moved there in the later 1990's and lived there until ten'ish years ago when we left to escape the tourists (yes, I realize I may be talkin' to you as I type this :-) ) and winter snow that doesn't play well with the multiple sclerosis I've had since college years. But we still visit often since my parents lived there up until my dad's death last year. So we know a thing or several about Bend bakeries and we were long time fans of a couple of Bend's great ones in the day; Sparrow, which is still there and as better than ever, and Village Baker, which is still there but lost its' consistent quality and service luster when the founder / baker had to leave after a divorce. (That bakery is for sale right now, btw.) We remember both of those in their just starting out days too and when they sold out of something before we got to the counter, we did not stomp our feet. Nor would we do it here. Just sayin'. Different perspectives or different customers. SEATING: Standard height table seating that is accessible to everyone inside, also high counter seats at front window. Looked as if there might be seating at outside rear patio. LOO: There is one and it is uni. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking space in front of the building (more are across the street), level in from sidewalk to bakery and all on one floor inside. I recently was lucky-enough to do an extended tour through France and Italy. Whenever I travel internationally, I fear that I will discover something incredible that I will never taste again at home. Bakeries were seemingly on every other block and I knew that I was going to do some serious damage to my expectations upon my return to Bend. I am happy to report that M's is my new daily destination for pastries at the Old Mill. This is a bakery that could compete with the best pattiseries and boulangeries in Paris. They offer croissants, almond croissants, chocolate croissants, seasonal chuffins, ham & cheese croissants, monkey bread, kougi amann, blueberry muffins, gluten-free cookies, and more. I always leave with one or two boxes full of treats. I've tried their olive sourdough, which I found to be excellent, if albeit pricey-enough to make it a rarer purchase for me. They have an excellent selection of coffees, as you'd expect. But the thing I must emphasize is that we have a bakery *right here* in Bend that could hold its own against the best in France! The only bad part was I wouldn't order a croissant again because they are COLD, we got a ham and cheese croissant, and the cheese was hard and the ham was cold. They said they don't them up because it ruins the consistency of the croissant. being French, it's always hard for me to go to a bakery in the US. The bread is fantastic and so are the pastries.

My pal and I love to go here! It's one of our favorite bakeries in town since they opened. The pastries are always perfect, recommend coming earlier than later in the day since they do bake fresh daily and have a limited supply. Always so pleased with the positive atmosphere and kind staff. Never once had a bad experience here. Also love their coffee, I usually get a latte or a mocha and it's perfect every time. This is an update to a previous review where I gave one star due to M's Bakery not having product after two separate visits. I am happy to say that I went this morning at around 9:30 am and they have pastries and bread! The kitchen looked like it was humming along. I'm so very happy they are on track. I can't wait to try one of their breads because the Olive Sourdough looked delicious. That will be next. I bought an almond croissant and it was the best almond croissant I have had in the states.
