Loved this place! We all shopped around leisurely tasting spiced items and flavored sugars. The place was not full despite it being the Labor Day weekend. This is the perfect place to pick up a gift or treat yourself to something interesting. There was a lot of tea! I liked that the spices were in various containers so if you wanted a plastic pouch or a classic glass jar you had the choice. Service was outstanding. I walked in to this store recently, just for the smell of it. If a spice or tea isn't sold here, it probably doesn't exist. I mean, it might, but do you really need it? Each wall is covered with perfectly labeled jars with appropriate portions for you to buy of each item. There are also tools of the trade for sale here too (loose leaf tea dipper balls, mortar and pestles, salt blocks for cooking and / or licking, and too many other things to describe or recall from memory. Samples are often provided in the back (but don't get greedy) and it's nice to try before you buy. They even have fresh brewed hibiscus tea for you to sample and wash the other freebies down with. If you're anywhere near the market, you have to make a stop over here ... pick up a tea bag, a shaker of salt, or walk in with no intentions, just for the smell of it. read more

A wonderful shop downtown off the market that specializes in spices and teas. Salts, peppers, spices, and loose leaf teas are here for you to find. Sounds simple, but they have a huge selection that you will be overwhelmed. We usually will pick out a blend to use at home for grilling out, I especially like the coffee blends for steaks. They offer different sizes to purchase, I like the smaller bags more thus you can try it and if you like it buy the bigger size. Though we have a favorite for salmon and have bought the jar size before. Great place to pick up gifts too, just look around they usually have them already packaged to sell, or just make your own. Service is nice and friendly. But I agree with others, the prices are a little high. read more

It's impossible to not become captivated by this locally beloved shop. Have been frequenting the spot for years and love bringing out of town guests here to experience a shop literally like no other. There is so much to learn, sample, and smell (with kind staff so well versed in their product, they let you come to them with questions) There are even complimentary recipe cards with pictures and instruction to use and inspire! I love approaching this place with a heavy dose of childlike wonder and awe- because each time you go you willll learn something new. If you don't, that's on you, my sweet creature of habit. Unlike other sampling friendly places, nothing here is forced on you, rather you can partake and view first and serve yourself. Brilliant strategy my friends, I see you! Some of my personal favorites are their tried and trues that are nearly always available to sample- Vic's garlic spice, Tuscan spice, and Onion/ Cheese mixture. They have the three available in olive oil dip form, and creamy dip form to showcase both deliciousness and versatility. Bread and sometimes veggies make the perfect vessels. Why pay a slight premium for spices and teas, you ask? Check out the ingredients list on the back and if you factor allll those in- the price at the store is less than all the separate items made yourself and its ready for you. My personal reason? Whenever I add them into my creations people say it's "restaurant quality", so there's that. Oh, and your doggo is very welcome to enjoy the AC and nose stimulation overload inside too. I love specialty shops but I'm always worried about "specialty" prices but this store is very affordable and it has a very welcoming atmosphere where you can smell everything (and I mean everything!!) before you buy it. They even have a few food and tea samples out to give you an idea of how the spices are going to taste. If you're like me and cook for yourself a lot, this place is great. They offer a huge variety of seasonings from taco to everything bagel and have many plain spices like cumin or chili powder as well. They also have 2 whole shelves dedicated to flavored salt and sugar. The tea selection was kind of weak compared to all the seasonings, but they still had some interesting ones. Everyone grate your own sea salt rock at my nest dinner party. Not a bad idea for a dinner conversation starter. This place has a lot of variety and was fun to walk around. They have various salts, peppers, and sugars that are not commonly found in your local grocer. They also have some different grains like Chinese Black Rice, quinoa, etc. One can buy sampler pack for between $4-5, which isn't too bad while you are on vacation. Loved it here!!! I had a hard time picking a loose leaf tea so I decided on the variety pack one black tea, green tea, and fruit tea (my favorite..cranberry Apple tart herbal tea)... It was around $18 ... And the staff was friendly .. One guy helped explain some and made suggestions on which ones he liked best.. My dad went with what he said (some chocolate black tea and an orange herbal tea ... The guy said it tastes like one of those orange funnies covered in chocolate)... Being a native of South Louisiana there is one thing I can not live without when it comes to food, and that is SPICE. After deciding to take a day to explore the shops and resturants in this area of town, my wife was excited to bring me here. She loves Tea, I love Spice so this was basically a perfect match up for us. I was impressed with the variety and quantity of the spices here. You could smell the spices as soon as you hit the door. Even more impressive was how the store is laid out. Beautiful displays, with spices, salts, peppers, and teas all carefully organized and shelved. Staff immediately greeted us and gave a small tour of the store as well as offered us tastings of the spices and spiced dips. I was shocked to find out how reasonably priced everything was, all the spices had reasonable and affordable price points. Additionally, they offer many "spice and tea accessories" to make your spice and tea experience exciting at home. I definitely will be visiting again when in need of a specific specialty spice. read more

My sister lives in Charleston, but I live in NYC. Once a year I go and visit her.. and it is a requirement I go to Spice and Tea Exchange!! I feel like a kid in a candy store - there is a WIDE variety of Teas, Spices, Salts, and more - I have to be honest, I am so hung up on the Teas and Spices I have paid everything else little attention. Out of the many, many different teas and spice I've purchased and tried, I have yet to find on I don't like. I use the spices in almost everything I make. My sister just recently moved out of Charleston, and I fear I may never go back... But you can bet I will still be placing orders on their website!! read more

I was not impressed with this establishment. I was so excited to visit. There was build up all day during our few hours in Charleston after a cruise. We finally arrive to a snobbish, rude man working the store. Don't bother asking questions or engaging him in any way. I don't even think he's interested in whether or not you care to buy a thing. Being a foodie and home chef, I was excited about all the different spices and teas to choose from. There were a few dips to sample also. The pricing was reasonable. I am giving this place three stars for their customer service or lack there of. Upon walking into the store, I was not greeted like fellow customers. Also, as I stood in line the cashier offered both customers a head of me discounts, one for buying give items and getting a sixth free. The other customer was asked if they were affiliated with the military and they said no, however she still gave them a discount and signed them up on their company website. As I checked out with my four items, I was afforded the same discounts as the previous customers. I probably would have gotten a fifth item if I was told I could get a sixth item for free too. Also, my husband was a marine! I'm not sure why I was treated differently then the others customers. I can tell you, if I'm ever back in the Charleston area I will not patronize with this establishment ever again, nor will I recommend them. All customers should be treated the same. read more

I stopped by this shop while visiting Greenville for the weekend. As a tea lover, I was excited to see their selection. The sales associate was friendly enough and explained some of the background on tea/spices, but I was disappointed in overall tea selection since it was pretty small and very expensive for the amount $4-6 per oz. I understand that its a specialty store, but I pay $15 per pound of organic tea here, so I dont understand how they come up with those prices. read more

I guess the nice staff that everyone else is yelping about was not there that day. I'm a friendly person, in from out of town, on a trip by myself, so I was in the mood to talk. There was a super friendly, nice young man, college student who helped me before a very surly, snotty assistant manager took over. Man, he was a jerk. He cut me off mid-sentence not once but TWICE to go to something else. He didn't even say excuse me, he just up and walked away while I was still talking. I wasn't trying to be annoying, and I spent a lot of money in there, but an older couple walked in, who I'm sure he thought he could make a higher commission off of, and he left me hanging. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. This guy seemed to seriously hate his life. He had the younger man ring me up and I told the kid, you are incredibly friendly and warm and you should be the manager here, not the other guy. My visit was during the Spoleto festival. Great products but seriously, get rid of Mr. Grumpy McSnotty pants. Literally every other single place I went to in Charleston, I was treated with warmth and kindness, except here. read more
