The ivy climbing the side of the historic-looking building along the Milwaukee River fit the exact description I was looking for. Inside, the space is spacious and already decked out for fall. There seemed to be a mix of regulars who joked with the barista and newbies like me, but I still felt completely comfortable in this unique space. My go-to is a latte with almond milk and stevia, and the barista offered to steam the stevia with the milk. Such a small detail, but I loved it! The latte was beautifully crafted and even came with latte art. Since it was my first time, they suggested trying one of their fresh-baked daily goods. I went with the cranberry orange scone, which she said might still be warm ... and it was excellent. The sugar topping and zest in the glaze sound like they'd make it overly sweet, but it was just right. While sitting for just a short while I was extremely impressed with the customer service here, above and beyond!!! There were waves of busy and quiet at the counter throughout my visit, but overall, it was an awesome spot to slow down, enjoy a really good coffee and pastry, and take in the cozy fall atmosphere. I wanted it in a mug, and they offer a choice of either an 8-ounce or 12-ounce mug. I went with the 12-ounce. It took a few more minutes than at some other coffee shops because they actually steep the tea instead of using a concentrate. It was worth the wait. The drink had a creamy texture, good tea flavor, and attractive latte art. The only thing I would change is the temperature. It was about 120°F, which is a little cooler than the 135°F or so that I prefer. I asked for a bakery recommendation and ended up with the cinnamon scone. That turned out to be an excellent choice, and they were happy to warm it up for me. I don't normally pay much attention to the cost of my coffee shop visits. However, Valentine is noticeably less expensive than many other locally owned coffee shops. My drink and pastry came to less than $10. That's a great value. Service: The staff members were friendly and helpful. The person at the register gave me plenty of time to figure out my order and answered my questions. While they didn't offer to warm up the scone, they were more than happy to do it when I asked. Atmosphere: This location is directly across from the UW-Milwaukee campus. Since classes were out for the summer, it wasn't very busy. There are a few café tables outside and plenty of seating inside for individuals, couples, or small groups. The layout feels open and spacious, and the large front windows let in lots of natural light. Definitely a place I'd return to.

I got mine with a fried egg. They only offer the egg fried hard. My preference would have been a softer egg with at least a little runny yolk, but it was still very good as served. My wife got the Quinoa Bowl with chicken and guacamole. That was an amazing combination. The guacamole isn't made fresh on-site, I happened to see the package from Costco, but it was actually very good. Service: Lots of very nice people here. My understanding is that there are a few paid staff members, but the majority of the people working are volunteers. Everyone we met was genuinely friendly and helpful. Ordering was easy. After placing your order, you get a number, and they deliver the food to your table. Atmosphere: It's a nice space. There's a smaller area where you place your order, along with some small tables. An adjacent larger room has additional seating and bigger tables. Lots of windows provide plenty of natural light, and there are areas that work well for smaller groups. My understanding is that the larger space is also used for meetings and gatherings by different community groups. It's a great facility for a community that wants to nurture neighborly goodwill and social involvement. This is definitely a place I want to support. It was hot and had reasonably good flavor (the bag was still steeping), but there wasn't much latte texture at all. I didn't even finish it. They have a nice selection of different bakery items, cakes, and cookies. I saw many people enjoying these, but I didn't get anything myself. Service: The folks taking the order were nice. They seemed to know lots of regulars who came in for beverages and food. Atmosphere: The place is super cute. It has an old-time feel to it, with a tin ceiling, wood floors, period lighting, and a cast-iron radiator. The roaster sits in the middle of the place, with a counter all around it for enjoying your drink. Other seating options are along the outside walls and near the front windows. Mine was a London Fog Tea Latte (a little lavender, a little vanilla) in a mug, and hers was a Coffee Vanilla Latte with almond milk. They did a great job with both of them. My London Fog had great flavor, well-textured foam, and was a good temperature. They did leave the tea bag in, which might be their standard practice, but I prefer the tea to be fully steeped and then have the bag removed. Otherwise, removing the bag later messes with all the wonderful foam (next time I would ask). Each of us got a scone. Mine was blueberry, and hers was white chocolate raspberry, warmed up and plated. Both were very good. If I had to be completely honest, these scones are more like muffins than traditional scones. However, they were both delicious.
