Good location near the cove. Not far away from the beautiful shores of La Jolla. We were able to get open seating right away at the bar just after 2 PM. Started off with a cold beer after spending the day at the beach. Atmosphere was relaxed, decor set to a sports bar tavern theme. (see video) Menu has lots to offer. We ordered their calamari appetizer which we found to be fresh, crispy and delicious. The staff didn't start off to engaging until we got a good conversation going with the bartender. It was actually his first day (after moving up from bar- backing). That made for a great "ice beaker" as my son is also a bartender. After that, we told him where were we from and then another server said his sister lived in the same exact area as us. So, these employees bumped up the rating to the 5 stars experience. The service felt rushed and our server was kind of rude. The food came out fairly quickly though and baseball was playing, so I didn't really mind. Both the calamari and fried pickle chips were decent. They were both too salty in my opinion, but the dipping sauces helped to mask some of the saltiness. Great customer service from the waitress and runners but the host seemed quite the opposite ( no smile just where would you like to sit and then put the menus down and turned around and left). Terrible. They just don't care. It used to be so fun there but the new owner just does not care about anyone. They automatically add 20% tip and 3% credit card fees to each check. Cayla told us they can't bring our food together because of separate checks. She told us to order at a later time but never came back so we ended up eating by ourselves. She was so unfriendly. Walked by The Spot while killing time before my hair cut and decided to come back after. Such a great casual vibe and good prices for the area. They have a great selection of food and appetizers. We ordered a few things from the menu and everything was amazing. There was plenty of seating inside and out. The outside seating offered a great view. Another year at the opening VIP party at the La Jolla Concours calls for a drink at The Spot after the event. We made our way up here a little before the event ended hoping to beat the crowd and grabbed a table in the bar to enjoy some drinks before calling it a night. Stay away! I should have read the reviews first. I don't usually write bad reviews, but my experience at The Spot in La Jolla was so awful that I feel like people should be warned. From the moment we walked in, the staff seemed completely unprofessional. Several of them were clearly drunk, and I even saw servers drinking alcohol behind the bar before coming over to serve customers. It was uncomfortable and honestly kind of shocking. The food was just as bad. What I ordered was greasy, poorly cooked, and within a couple of hours I came down with terrible food poisoning. It ruined my entire evening and the next day. Between the drunk staff and the unsafe food, this was easily the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The staff were amazing, the only thing I didn't care for were the super cute puppies the owner had inside the bar! I don't think dogs should be where food and drinks are being served. We had fried pickles and potato skins which were great, we also had some type of pretzels that were ok. We did order food Togo (chicken bowls ) but it was not good at all!
