The Shack Bar & Grill is a quaint little spot in the heart of La Jolla. Our server was very sweet and quick to get us everything we needed. The chicken on the Caesar salad and on the tacos was delicious and perfectly seasoned. My fiancé said the fish and chips was really good and fresh, but the garlic parm tots didn't wow him. They were a little too soft and could be crunchier. We were in and out quickly and had great service outside. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering it for drinks or food! read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Endearingly scruffy bar established in 1995. We came for the happy hour. It definitely leaned hard into the beach shack aesthetic, inside and out. The general atmosphere was very laid back, the bartender and patrons alike. We felt very comfortable here. We got some basic beers and I tried their peach Paloma spritz--surprisingly good. We didn't think we were hungry, but couldn't resist a pretzel, which was amazing: served warm and buttered, accompanied by mustard and hatch chili queso--a winner! My boyfriend and I came here for a drink as we were in the area. Spontaneous night out to watch a football game. It's located next to a 7-11 and across of Rigoberto's Taco Shop and The Promiscuous Fork on La Jolla Blvd in La Jolla. There is a lot of free street parking around the area. The exterior was kind of nice with the bar looking like an actual tiki shack but with no tiki styled drinks. It was small bar with a pool table in the middle of the space. Would be fun once more drinks were in us! This was definitely one of the local bars with its ambiance of regulars and stickiness of the bar. My boyfriend and I each got Stella Artois, and Garlic Fries to share. The fries had Parmesan shavings on top! And the aioli dip was sooo good. YUM! It was definitely a casual night out. The biggest downside of this place was the fact that the smell of cigarette smokes can get into the bar even though the smokers are outside. Those who go in the back to smoke brought in the smell. Luckily, my boyfriend and I were just about to head out as the person smoked. Causal local bar without too much people traffic. Good place to watch sports games as well. P.S. one of the workers brings her dog (about 50 lb?) who just lies down the entire night to people watch. The dog was so cute and friendly! read more

I walk by this spot all the time heading down to Windansea. Yesterday I finally popped in for lunch with my friends. Very cool chill beach vibes. Can't go wrong with their burgers. We ordered the BBQ Burger with tater tots, the Bacon Burger with fries, Pretzel, Bourbon chicken wings and a Metzcal Mule. Food was good. Service was good. Been coming here for years, recently my man was looking for the BEST fish and chips in the area and I think he has found them. The pieces of fish are huge and plentiful with lots of crisp and crunch! It's served with tons of fries. I usually have the grilled fish tacos. I wish they made homemade tarter sauce but I understand that bars are busy. I've done just about everything you could do at this place so I feel like this is the most qualified review you'll read. All you need to know is that everything is going to work out! We're drinking at a beach town bar with great bartenders, great food, and great drinks. If you leave the shack with any sort of gripe, you need to do some self evaluation. Stopped by this little shack bar, and for a spot that doesn't get a ton of business, it was an awesome experience. Had the Shack Burger--the beef had great flavor, the bacon was crispy, and it hit the spot. What really made the visit memorable was Kayla--hands down one of the best servers around! She kept my water refilled, checked in on my food, and even handed me a napkin when she noticed I had cheese in my beard (now that's attention to detail!). Super friendly, fun, and just great energy all around. Also love that this place is fur-baby friendly--definitely a nice, laid-back spot in the middle of fancy La Jolla. Best nachos around - wow were these amazing. Chips are homemade and we had the beef added which was very tasty. We also tried the buffalo wings as they were in the happy hour menu - meaty and good sauce. Last item was the chicken skewers (I'm trying to eat a hella lotta protein daily) which came with three nice sized pieces and a TON of Tots which were cooked just right! Every Beach Town has to have a Surf Theme Bar right, it's the rule! Well these guys are Killin'It! Look at photos-the spot is Uber Cool and super cozy! Patio seating,open fire pit, pool tables and great drink and happy hour specials! Kayla + Morgan= best service award! We visited a couple times while we stayed in La Jolla. Food yeah it was fricken fantastic! I ordered the Burger of the Month and I can't get it outta my head! Green Chili and Cheeses all melted over an Angus Burger and oh boy it was Delicious! We stopped here for happy hour since our hotel was near by. I think if you get beer and fries this place would be great. I ordered grilled chicken skewers that were stringy, chewy and covered in what tasted like hidden valley Italian dressing. It tasted like it had been microwaved. There were no grill marks on it. I literally gagged. The lettuce of my salad looked like it had been chopped 3 days ago. Most pieces were brown. Everything tasted like it came out of a plastic tube. The servers were extremely sweet and helpful, I realize this is not a reflection of them. I expected more from a restaurant in La Jolla. read more

I come here for the pool and stay for the food which says something because "bar food" usually means a culinary cry for help. I haven't wandered too far off the menu because I've got my trinity: nachos, chicken tenders, and the corn dog. Greasy bar grub only has so much room to shine, but The Shack does it justice. The nachos are my personal vice, a molten cheese pile that eventually congeals into chewy lava you have to rip apart like survival food. They get soggy fast, but I like them that way. My buddy swears they have the best corn dogs he's ever had and while I love them almost as much, they're probably just Cysco cooked really well. Most people would say the fries are subpar. I call them beautiful: soggy, misshapen, the perfect cut. As a chicken finger fanatic the chicken tenders are sad. You can tell they're fresh, made in-house, but they lack any flavor or crunch. If you're the type who likes your food clean, unseasoned, and vaguely healthy but still wants to be naughty, you're welcome. Prices are fair, beer's cold, and the staff has favorites. If you're not one of them, expect service that ranges from indifferent to mildly hostile. But honestly, that's part of the charm. Overall, you'll play pool with "fashion guys" who per formatively smoke cigarettes, girls with no volume awareness, drunk moms, try hards- all of the above and enjoy some very solid bar food. read more

I went there on a Thursday night. There was a guy and a female working. I ordered a Model beer at the bar and I was watching as he was reaching for the beer and I noticed there was a open beer next to the beer he was grabbing for me and the female bartender told him to give me the opened beer and I couldn't believe that he listened. He grabbed the open Modelo beer and was handing it to me. I immediately told him Excuse! me? you cannot give me a opened beer?? he just looked at the female bartender and the female bartender said someone didn't want it. (Shocked & I thought shameless) I told both of them you cannot sell me an opened beer ?? I want a beer with the cap sealed. The beer that they were giving me did not have a cap on it, I do t know if they thought I wasn't watching when he grabbed ? or that's normal there??
