For a moment, I was about to give a 4 start rating, not the 5 I ended up choosing, because a 5 star should be amazing, reserved for the truly unique. But, I decided on a 5 because, in the more than 30 years that I have been dining at the Brockton Villa, I've never had a bad meal, nor a marginal one, they've all been spot on. It's easy to enjoy the perch on the side of the hill, with an immediate view of the Cove and the further views of the Shores, Glider Port and on a clear day, Torrey Pines. What comes with that view, is the smell of nature, and on Tuesday, it was stronger. It didn't interfere with our meal. The wait staff are all friendly, experienced, and approach the table appropriately. I can't relate to a setting where the server is there every couple of minutes. I tend to eat there more for breakfast and lunch, dinners less commonly. The menu is diverse enough for 2 picky eaters to always find something fantastic. On Tuesday, I had the clam and crab chowder and it was superb. I grew up in New England, the epicenter of chowders. I am known amongst friends, for the many chowders that I make at home. The salmon BLT is a recurrent favorite, as is the basic breakfast, tweaked to your preferences, with a wide array of protein options. Im going to be perfectly honest this was by far one of the worst dining experiences I've had just in general but what made it worse was that we visited this place while on vacation. The family was pretty excited to try this place out and by the end of the meal, every single member of my family (all 5 people) were angry. The service was horrific. We came during lunch, they were not particularly busy and we were seated within 5 minutes. Let's start with the food. I ordered a $25 Wagyu burger and it was unseasoned. Not under seasoned, UNSEASONED. The patty was overcooked. I asked for medium rare and it was well done to a point where it was not even remotely enjoyable. This $25 burger did not come with fries, it came with a very small bowl of salad that had no salad dressing. The wrap my wife ordered was mediocre and lacking any flavor. The shrimp inside was good but everything else was bland. The one thing that was good was the seafood chowder. It was excellent. Very flavorful and rich. The best tasting thing at our table were the children's tater tots and the clam chowder to be very honest. Now onto the service. The service is arguably worse than the food. The waiter looked annoyed to take our order but what is egregiously worse than that is that in our entire time sitting there eating our food for more than 45 minutes, our server (or any member of the wait staff) literally did NOT come back once to check on us or ask us if the dishes were good or to give anyone water refills (we ordered a coke and that was not refilled the entire meal). I want to reiterate, we literally did not get a refill of our waters or the coke we ordered 1 time the entire meal. Our waters were empty 10 minutes into the food arriving but because no member of the wait staff came by to check on us, we resorted to drinking out the water bottles we brought ourselves. We tried to flag down a member of the wait staff 3 times and after, my wife just said 'let's just try to get out of here as soon as possible. This is ridiculous'. I also want to be clear, we were not in a separate room or in the corner, the door of the restaurant was visible, the bar where they serve alcohol was visible from our table. The wait staff just chose not to check on us and ignore our hands in the air trying to flag them down. They came after more than an hour to drop off the check without saying anything to us or ask about how the food was. We were so angry by that point we did not even bother to ask for a refill of water or coke. We just wanted to leave as soon as possible. read more

After searching for popular brunch spots in San Diego, I came across a few options, but I decided to visit Brockton Villa Restaurant with a friend because of its prime location right by the ocean. The restaurant is located at 1235 Coast Bivd; while street parking is available there, it was extremely difficult to find a spot due to the heavy traffic from visitors to La Jolla Cove-you can essentially consider parking there impossible. Instead, we found street parking on Prospect Street, just one block away, and walked about five minutes to reach the restaurant. My friend and I ordered the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes, the Cove Combo, and the Plain Pancakes. The taste, presentation, and generous portions were all excellent; in fact, the portions were so large that we couldn't finish everything. Brockton Villa Restaurant is a small restaurant located in La Jolla, San Diego. The restaurant itself was not difficult to locate, however, parking is a bit of an issue but there are parking structures that do charge a fee. The location of the restaurant is beautiful as you are right on the beach and you have a great view of the ocean and the seals that hang around the area. Supposedly people have complained about a "fishy smell", the ocean does smell fishy and the restaurant can't control the environment. Megan was our waitress and she was amazing. She was full of energy, polite, professional, and checked on us often to make sure everything was going well. I ordered the Fig & Goat Cheese Burger, medium rare, and a Vanilla Italian Soda. The soda was refreshing and wasn't like your usual soda. The vanilla flavor was not overpowering and I enjoyed it. The wait time for the burger was a bit long, but I didn't mind as I watched the seals play on the beach. Unfortunately, the burger was not medium rare, but that wasn't a big deal as it was full of flavor and juicy. The meat itself had a nice hearty flavor that pair nicely with the goat cheese. Surprisingly, goat cheese on a burger is a great combo that brings it all together. The sweet and savory with a creamy texture made me craving for more. The bun was soft and firm as well. I ordered tater tots on the side and they were perfect. Golden and crispy on the outside while being soft and fluffy on the inside. They make their ranch in-house and it was one of the best tasting ranch sauces that I've tried. The ranch was light, refreshing, and had a dill flavor. Overall, I enjoyed my time very much. It was a b bowl that satisfied my peckish hunger, but not curiosity of what it could have been. Would have benefitted from being a bit more smokier to really draw out the flavors a bit more Local Mussels - which had a mediterranean broth, harissa oil, cilantro, scallions, and grilled baguette. Baguette was great. It was nice and charred. The broth threw us for a loop. It was more curry like which added an interesting twist but can't say it was my favorite. Server was nice. Front host wasn't the greatest. Parking is wherever you can find it. We came to see the seals and found parking nearby. But it's not the easist place to park. Happy hour is from 3pm to 6pm. It's not the greatest of happy hour. $3 off select apps (which still comes out to like 20 bucks), $5 beers, and $9 broc-tails, which are just what they call their cocktails. It's a 2 star place for me because the prices, although you're paying for the view and convenience, were high and the flavor of the food wasn't spectacular. We were seated immediately in the back, even though there were two front-row tables available. When we asked to move, they said someone else had requested the table -- but no one ever sat there. They pretended to "clean" it and then left it untouched the entire time. When we tried to call the waitress a few times, she sounded irritated every time she approached. What a beautiful restaurant with an amazing view add the fact that it was built in the late 1800s makes even more worth visiting. We came on the weekend and were lucky enough to get a table on the outside balcony without a reservation. I felt so lucky and appreciated that they even tried to see us. We weren't aware, but it's so popular for brunch there now we know. It did take a little bit for our server to come over but again they were quite busy and when she did come over, she was so sweet and I loved that she just smiled nonstop. She gave us some time to look over the menus and brought us some water once we were ready. We ordered a margarita and a beer as well as our food. My husband ordered a club sandwich and I got the fish tacos. Both were amazing and portions were huge and we were only able to eat about half while there the overlook to the ocean was worth the prices and the experience I would come again in a heartbeat and try a few other things. I've been coming to Brockton Villa for nearly a decade. Their iconic Coast Toast has made it one of my all-time favorite spots for breakfast or brunch. That said, prices have really climbed over the years. These days, it's more of an occasional treat than a regular stop. Sadly a yearly tradition will be no longer. Brockton Villa used to serve this amazing sangria and their food was too die for. Lines would be down the stairs with wait times. They no longer have their sangria. Hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict had no flavor and seemed watered dow or thin. The ham for eggs benedict was also sliced thin like for a ham sandwich not thick Canadian bacon. They don't have blue cheese dressing and their ranch was also watered down. The potatoes were not cooked long enough and so chewy we gave up. No longer worth trying to find parking to eat here. So sad and disappointed as we used to love this place. read more

We made a reservation for 2 at 11:30 on a Thursday and were seated promptly! It was a rather rainy/sunny (combo?) day so the outside seating was closed since it was wet. There was also a spot that kept dripping water near our table, likely due to the rain that day. I would give this place a solid 3.5 stars for their breakfasts. The view is 5+ stars with a perfect view of the cove. They sat us outside at an uncovered table on a day when it was partly cloudy and forecasted for rain even though we had a reservation. We ended up having to cut our meal short because it started to rain. The parking is limited and can be difficult (not their fault) especially the later in the day it gets. The food itself was solid. We were given a gift of a trip and hadn't been here for decades. Brockton Villa is still as delightful as we remembered. We chose a lovely table at the top of the tiered patio. We were comfy with ample heaters and enjoyed our stunning ocean view, framed by picturesque yellow umbrellas. Brockton Villa still makes their perfectly poached eggs called "Steamers". They've explained how they do it in the past, and I still don't understand it, but they're really special. Our server took care of us with everything we desired. My eggs Benedict with extra hollandaise and balsamic mixed green salad was all I could have hoped for, eggs perfectly poached, homemade real hollandaise, extra lemons on the side, authentic Canadian bacon, atop a fresh bakery English muffin.
