[[HIGHLIGHT]]Came here for brunch to celebrate a birthday, and it was a great experience with an amazing view in the background.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Walking distance to La Jolla cove so can't go wrong with that. The food was fresh and delicious. The breakfast burrito hit the spot with the right balance of ingredients and superb taste. Coffee was strong, just how I like it. Service was great, with friendly and attentive staff throughout.

This is my Bloody Mary but they will bring one for you too.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Super cute place with awesome view! Hands down, great location.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]But the downside is the smell and the parking.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was great and our server was friendly. The food is fine but fails to live up to the location and service. If you're looking for killer food, have a bloody mary and enjoy the location.

3.5 stars [[HIGHLIGHT]]The views amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The foods good. The service is sloooooow. We went for breakfast/brunch. We were there for 2 hrs & had to track down someone to pay them. We ordered the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes & a classic breakfast plate. The pancakes were tasty. The classic breakfast was just that. We ordered coffee & it was cold, then lukewarm, then we finally got a hot one. The waiter was friendly & joked with us about it when we requested a refill. Want the cold one? Ha. No the hot one please. Overall good experience. Just don't go if you're in a rush.

The people were very welcoming and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The views are great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was okay. [[HIGHLIGHT]]But the smell is such a deterrent to coming back to this restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I know it's not their fault, but it does negatively affect the restaurant experience.

One of the coolest ocean view restaurants in La Jolla! I love their outdoor patio and it's dog friendly. They prepared a water bowl for our dog, so sweet! And everyone's so friendly and I was surprised how their price is reasonable considering their location is prime. And avocado toast was huge and so good, and their clam chowder!! It's the bomb, was sooo good. Definitely would come back!

Came here Super Bowl Sunday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sun was shining, parking was easy, and brunch had no wait.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Coast toast was incredible, surprised how they can replicate the exact taste and texture of a souffle!

The view is gorgeous. Hard to beat it. You have the cove and the water and the breeze right there. Inside wasn't as pretty. Felt very laid back and almost like a coffee shop vibe. Super chill. There's a front patio and a back patio section. The chairs aren't the comfiest. We came on a Monday afternoon around 3pm. It was suppose to be just drinks but there were a few things on the menu that caught my eye. There were 4 of us plus a dog in our party. They offered a dog bowl with water. We ordered the following: Passionfruit Mojito which was super good. Margarita, which wasn't too exciting. A cup of BV Epic Chowder - which was creamy and had a lovely ivory color. It was a b bowl that satisfied my peckish hunger, but not curiosity of what it could have been. Would have benefitted from being a bit more smokier to really draw out the flavors a bit more Local Mussels - which had a mediterranean broth, harissa oil, cilantro, scallions, and grilled baguette. Baguette was great. It was nice and charred. The broth threw us for a loop. It was more curry like which added an interesting twist but can't say it was my favorite. Server was nice. Front host wasn't the greatest. Parking is wherever you can find it. We came to see the seals and found parking nearby. But it's not the easist place to park. Happy hour is from 3pm to 6pm. It's not the greatest of happy hour. $3 off select apps (which still comes out to like 20 bucks), $5 beers, and $9 broc-tails, which are just what they call their cocktails. It's a 2 star place for me because the prices, although you're paying for the view and convenience, were high and the flavor of the food wasn't spectacular. The staff, although it was only 30 percent full, seemed distant or preoccupied for maybe preparing for the dinner rush.

The food was okay, nothing special. We mainly came for the view, and that's where everything went wrong. We've been here a few times before, and this was by far the absolute worst experience. We were seated immediately in the back, even though there were two front-row tables available. When we asked to move, they said someone else had requested the table -- but no one ever sat there. They pretended to "clean" it and then left it untouched the entire time. When we tried to call the waitress a few times, she sounded irritated every time she approached. The service felt dismissive and careless, and it honestly ruined the visit. Horrible experience overall. Definitely not worth coming for the view or the food anymore.

The service was fantastic. The drinks were absolutely amazing (pumpkin spice latte with actual pumpkin ftw). The best lemon ricotta pancakes I've ever eaten and the rest of the menu was also stellar. Can't beat the views of the seals and swimmers just down the cliff.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]What a beautiful restaurant with an amazing view add the fact that it was built in the late 1800s makes even more worth visiting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came on the weekend and were lucky enough to get a table on the outside balcony without a reservation. I felt so lucky and appreciated that they even tried to see us. We weren't aware, but it's so popular for brunch there now we know. It did take a little bit for our server to come over but again they were quite busy and when she did come over, she was so sweet and I loved that she just smiled nonstop. She gave us some time to look over the menus and brought us some water once we were ready. We ordered a margarita and a beer as well as our food. My husband ordered a club sandwich and I got the fish tacos. Both were amazing and portions were huge and we were only able to eat about half while there the overlook to the ocean was worth the prices and the experience I would come again in a heartbeat and try a few other things. It was a great stop and well worth checking out if you're in La Jolla.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The smell from the seals is nauseating[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The French toast was so thick that the center was soggy. The banana foster is too sweet and the classic French toast is boring at best [[HIGHLIGHT]]The views and people are fantastic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The smell will keep me from going back The lame excuses by the owners cannot cover up the stench. The French toast is lame at best

I came here about a year ago and I stumbled upon this place and the breakfast was incredible. Came back for my birthday and had brunch there on the Fourth of July. The staff was super kind and they let me bring my dog and they were super nice to him and brought out water him. The French toast is wickedly amazing every time we've come here we've had a 10 out of 10 experience.

2/21/26 - I had Fish Tacos, and my friend had a Salmon BLT Sandwich, with hot tea.

My friends and I have eaten our lunches here through the years. We visit La Jolla Cove at least once a year to check out the birds, seals, and sea lions. After a day of visiting the wildlife, we go to Brockton Villa for lunch before heading back home. On February 21, 2026, my friend and I returned here for lunch. The food portions were very generous, and the service was excellent! We always look forward to returning here every time we are in the area. It is so popular, we almost always have a wait to be seated. But the wait is worth it! Highly recommended!

Ask the Community - Brockton Villa Restaurant

    Do they have a surcharge?

Did today. I've never had one before. Not thrilled.

    Do they take reservations?

    Yes, OpenTable

Do they allow dogs on the patio?

    Is breakfast available during lunch?

Yes breakfast is available during lunch hours

On weekdays, what time is breakfast served till?

    Whole day

    Is this place pet friendly?

Not really. It is too crowded, for one thing. It is a small beach bungalow-turned-restaurant and there isn't that much space between tables. So even a small dog would be close to other people.

Does it accommodate big groups as 14 people?

I believe it does. There is a large main dining are where they can put together several tables. I would call to confirm but I believe I have seen parties like you are describing.

Pardon my question, but can you smell the seals from here?

On certain days, there is definitely a fishy smell coming from the coast (I've been living in the area 30 years now). In my opinion, usually the food and view is worth it! There's inside seating if you prefer, but you won't get the view. ;)

Does the restaurant have parking? Is it recommended for children?…

It has side street parking only and yes,it is recommended for children.

Sugar and Scribe has a very inviting decor and atmosphere. They have a very colorful patio and super cute interior as well. It had a very spring/summery vibe with all the beautiful flower decorations. When we arrived we were lucky that there was no wait, and we got seated right away. Our server was sweet and attentive and came out order right away. I decided to get the fried hot honey chicken and biscuits and my boyfriend got the fried chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, my fried chicken and biscuits were way too salty and I struggled to taste any hot honey. It just tasted like watered down tobasco sauce, which was disappointing! My boyfriend said he loved his fried chicken and waffles. He also thought my chicken wasn't too salty, but I felt it was for me personally. So I guess it might be a preference thing. Overall, we had a good experience there. I would give them another shot and maybe try something else next time!

When I arrived, the server was about to seat me even though my family member hadn't arrived yet. However, the manager asked me to wait outside until my entire party was present. She explained that because they serve food quickly, they didn't want to seat me or have me order coffee while I was waiting for the second person. Once we were seated at 11:00, it took about 25 minutes, and me having to flag down our server, before we were able to place our food order. What made this especially confusing was that the table behind us, a party of seven, was seated with only two people present. They were served coffee while waiting for the remaining five members of their group, which seemed inconsistent with the explanation I had been given. The food itself was good, although the chicken sausage I ordered was not served hot. During the meal, no one checked on us to ask how everything was or whether we needed anything. At the end, we also had to get the attention of another server in order to receive our bill. The service has always been excellent on previous visits, which is why this experience was disappointing. That said, we've enjoyed this restaurant for a long time, and it's one of our family's favorite places to eat. Because of our past experiences, I'd be happy to return and hope this was simply an unusually busy or off day for the team.

And it's delicious!!! Allie was our host and was able to find a great place to eat. All the tables are great with even an outside covered patio available. Jade our waitress was very friendly and nice. She was very patient and professional and listened to us in a kind way. With young ones with us, it is challenging. However, Jade ensured that we enjoyed our meal at the Shorehouse Kitchen. At brunch, my go to dish is the French toast that will tell me the quality and care from the kitchen. I was blown away at how delicious the French Toast was. The name is the "CARAMELIZED TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN FRENCH TOAST with Fresh Blueberries or Bananas and Chantilly Cream, or a Grilled Pineapple". Jade gave away the secret ingredient to me and I was impressed. An applied Maillard reaction with brown sugar brought the French Toast a new level of yumminess. The Chantilly Cream took it over the top, not to sweet and very creamy. Yum!!! Also tried the "RASPBERRY TRUFFLE MOCHA St. George Vanilla Bean Vodka. Raspberry Liqueur, Callebaut Belgian Chocolate, Espresso, Steamed Milk, Chantilly Cream" . AMAZING!!! The Shorehouse Kitchen is a gem with fantastic food and service. Definitely a return visit call for the family!!!

Freaking religious experience…read more You'll want to set aside a couple hours for dinner at Duke's. Not because it's outdoors and has a great vibe, and helpful, friendly servers, which make you want to stay there for hours with your family, friends, or coworkers--although all of that is true. Not because it has a gorgeous view of the Pacific--which it does. Not even because of their piña coladas! No, my friend. It's because their sautéed Mac nut & herb-crusted fresh fish with mac salad is just *so good* but if you have any reverence for all that is good and true in this world, you'll have to stop every few bites, let your eyes roll back into your head a little, and enjoy it. It's just... slow. Now. First things first. Mac nut, mac salad. One is Macadamia nuts; one is macaroni. Hopefully my team member who raved about the mac salad does not read this and realize that I thought it was a salad of Macadamia nuts. I was like OK, that sounds weird, but I do love Macadamia nuts, so let's try it. She was right to rave. It was *delicious*. In fact, I think the fish and the salad kind of ran together a bit and made each other even more delicious. Look, I'm not sure how it worked, I just know it worked. Apparently for the dinner menu it only shows rice with the fish; ignore that. Just ask them to swap it out. Speaking of lunch, I did also have lunch at Duke's once. Got fish and chips. And let me tell you, the weirdest thing: Their *tartar sauce* was off the charts. I know. Who nails the tartar sauce? But it had this perfect zing to it, as though they got an idea from the usual malt vinegar and mixed it all in there. Given the quality of what I've had do far, you probably can't go wrong at Duke's. Get a reservation, ask for an ocean view--and give yourself plenty of time.
