I actually loved them a lot. And normally for me Nevada is mostly Las Vegas, I mean as far as as the parts of it worth visiting are concerned. Of course if you are not a fan of few ranches that have nothing much to do with cattle or some other recreational activities that are frowned upon in Idaho. Other than that I could probably name you a dozen of places worth visiting within less than 5 hours of a windy shaky drive from our place. Elko is like Blackfoot on steroids. Just slightly colder and darker in winter. We have a family member who grew up in Vegas and tries not to mention it much in Elko because it is somehow considered that in Vegas people do not love their guns and their families enough. The state of Nevada does not currently levy income taxes on individuals or corporations, nor has it ever. However if you'd make a big purchase like a newer vehicle and then try to register it...you'd be surprised. Also lots of residents have no access to sewer lines and have to build a septic tank which is basically a giant poop bucket right under their houses, which I think would be a large drawback for me personally. I liked our food a lot. I think there was that complimentary cabbage soup which was awesome. Picon, the beverage made me think of Calvados. Waitresses seemed to be very attentive and overall I saw people who are less lethargic and more energized how do I describe it? More like running business not just walking around it at a leisure pace as you may see a lot locally. Meat and fish all was cooked to specs. My only concern was I kept wondering why the available red wines were not listed in the menu, I saw people drinking beer in the lobby so I am sure other beverages were available as well, just was not sure where were they not listed in our copy of the menu. Ambiance was nice and Basque and I would probably not drive that far just to dine out as I can get to Boise or to Yellowstone within couple hours, but if we are ever in the area again it surely sounds like a nice stop. read more

I'm here in Elko for work travel. I found the Star Hotel Basque Dining in the local travel restaurant guide with excellent recommendations. So I went there yesterday around 3:30 PM. Staff were nice, very welcoming! They were still serving lunch menu but they accommodated my request to serve me dinner menu. I ordered the 16oz Filet Mignon with garlic topping, medium rare. I'm kind of disappointed since it tasted bland, looks like unseasoned, no hint of salt at all. Worst steak I've had. Fried fries, overcooked & looks like they fried them using overused cooking oil. Cabbage soup is ok. Tossed salad was all iceberg lettuce with their home-made dressing which is just fine with me. Beans were like boiled, unseasoned, ok with me. Bread & butter was good. The staff said the sides come with spaghetti but they don't have it at that time. I asked if they can replace it with soup or anything but they said they don't do that. It would be nice if they can offer a replacement for the missing spaghetti since it's included in the ordered menu especially considering the high price of the ordered food. read more

Our experience was a major disappointment! We had friends from the Basque country visit last summer, so we were excited to go try Basque food. It's not Basque food! It's just American food served Basque family-style, which means there are too many bowls and plates to fit on the table! In addition, we came early to beat the rush, because my 9-year-old granddaughters were with us, and the seating was right next to the bar. The language was loud, vile and profane! We couldn't enjoy our pricey meal in that atmosphere, so we finally loaded our food into doggy boxes and left. The girls had only eaten the bread and french fries; they said the meat was too tough to chew. I'd have to agree it was a little tough to cut as well, but the green peppers on top added some moisture. And the place is located a short block away from several brothels! read more

We had the porterhouse, lamb chops, all the dinner sides and dessert (bread pudding and cheesecake). I know this is a local legend and understand that but the food isn't extraordinary. It's a huge quantity of food but it's not a place I'd eat at again. The lamb chops at Odeh's are something I'd repeat though. The bar is good and service was friendly and prompt. One of the best Basque style restaurants in Nevada. Not as good as Winnemucca's Martin, but better than all others, including Reno's Basque offerings. Come prepared with a strong appetite. The unlimited basque cabbage soup is superb. As is their salad and in-house made fries. The other sides are good, although I would skip the spaghetti side in favor of saving room for their exceptional side dishes. The Star's main entree's are always excellent. Although offerings include excellent lamb and steak, I prefer the seafood. Seating is, like all basque, family style. Tables are a bit close and, since dining is usually packed, you are eating for the quality food and authentic experience, not for ease of quiet conversation with guests. I prefer lunch at the Star over dinner. The excellent steak or seafood sandwiches, offered only at lunchtime, come in potions better suited to my capacity. Always plan on taking a portion home, lunch or dinner. Basque restaurants are dedicated to insuring you never leave hungry. The crowd for lunch tend to be less intense, although even lunch can involve long waits, perhaps relieved at the antique bar or viewing period pictures on the walls, while festivals or gatherings are in town. read more

I've been here twice...the first time I was here was probably 6 or 7 years ago. I was in town for work for just a few nights. I had been upsold on the Star so much by my coworker that it just didn't meet my expectations....my taste buds were all aflutter for another Basque restaurant in the Northern part of the state. This time I was on my own. Nobody to tell me what to get and nobody to tell me what I should like. Was it good? Yep. Was it great? Yep? Was it down right amazing? Definitely. Funny thing that may have swayed my opinion was a "Reno Foodies" discussion as I was eating my meal. They were talking about a casual meal. $6-9 for drink, 10-15 for app, and $25 for the main. I read that while I stared at my table full of food. On this night I had.... Soup Bread Salad Basque Beans Chick Peas Spaghetti Green Beans Fries 20oz Sirloin (roughly) Check out my pics of the table. You will see this was an amazing spread of food. Then check out my picture of my check. Yep. This food wasn't only affordable...but it was also very good in quality and flavor. I ate it all up the next day. So did they bounce my favorite from the top of the list? Nah...I just think that I need two more Basque Restaurants to fill out my Mt. Rushmore of great basque places. A few more notes. They do seat you "family style" so come and enjoy the company of friendly strangers....and don't expect to sit at the bar and eat...they ain't havin' none of that. The food here was phenomenal. We had the baked lamb and the baked orange roughy. They were both so good. You get so much food along with your meal. It is incredible. You start with cabbage soup and salad and bread. To go along with your meal you get french fries, green beans, pasta and red beans. We also had a half a carafe of house red chilled burgundy which was only $7.00. For dessert we shared a huckleberry ice cream and that was only $3.00. What a fantastic meal!!!! read more

This a a real gem! We have eaten here on many trips through and are never disappointed! First off... I recommend skipping lunch the day you visit! There is so much food, you don't want to miss! Pace yourself... It starts with a soup, simple & delicious. Soft bread & butter you'll want to keep eating but here comes a salad! Crispy lettuce dressed with mayo/vinegar that you may top with perfectly crunchy homemade Parmesan croutons. By now... you may already want to loosen your belt! Then comes pasta & green beans....and the red beans and garbanzos.... and then the most amazing home-cut French fries, crispy & salted perfectly! Then... the main course!! I had an 8 oz filet mignon topped with garlic that was incredibly tender and juicy! They offer seafood, chicken, pork and lamb as well so that everyone in your group will be happy! 2 things here: I had never had Basque food and had never been to Elko. Between the two I was not expecting much. My mind was blown with this place! The appetizers are served family style and included with all the meals. I personally loved the salad with house-made croutons. Although I will say, be careful not to fill up on all of the delicious appetizer because I made that mistake. I only finished about half of my bacon wrapped fillet, which was a special of the night. It was simply great. Don't worry though, I found some room to try dessert! I originally was just going to order the cookie dough ice cream, but they were out. So I went with my gut and got the bread pudding. Definitely better than any cookie dough ice cream they could have ever served up. This is a late review. I went May 16th. This place is great! It used to be a place where the sheep herders would live upstairs and then would go downstairs to eat. It's Basque culture if I am saying that correct and the style that they serve the food is family style were you share your sides. ( even with strangers sitting next to you) that was new and exciting! We start off with a dinner drink called Picon Punch that literally punches you in the face. Your first dish is cabbage soup and bread.Delish! Not sure why this isn't the top rated place in Elko because it should be. Bar scene is always fun and lively...remember only the first Pican Punch is rough! Get the croutons at the bar...help to soak up the Pecans. The food here is simple but amazing. I usually go with the baked lamb...you can pull it apart with a spoon. The steaks are excellent and as usual, desert is impossible to order because they bring out so many side dishes. I can't say enough good things about this place. This place is amazing ! This was my first time trying basque food and I was not disappointed. I ordered the sautéed prawns. Before my meal was served, they brought out a delicious soup with lots of cabbage, fresh white bread, and a salad. That was already a lot of food for just myself, but when they brought out my prawns many side dishes came with it. Green beans, fries, garbanzo beans, spaghetti pasta all came with my prawns. I ordered my prawns hot and I was worried they would be too spicy to enjoy but it was just the right amount of spice. Side note: I tried their picón punch and it was insane. I had two of them and it had me feeling some type of way. The service was awesome as well! This place is honestly one of my favorite restaurants now. I can't wait to come back. read more

This review is from a long time ago. I lived at the Star Hotel the summer of 1972 while working for the Nevada Highway Department on a survey crew. This work was part of an engineering traineeship program. The Star had a weekly rate for room and board. If I told you how much it cost each day, you would not believe me. A single cup of coffee at Starbucks today would cost more. We ate in the kitchen each morning and the chef cooked us eggs, bacon, and toast with coffee. He also packed surprise lunches for us. It might include a large hunk of cooked chicken between two large pieces of bread. Yum! Dinner was of course family style and at 19 years old I got to taste Basque foods I had never eaten before. I remember on the weekends they served for lunch the best soup I have ever eaten. I can still remember the comforting smell and taste of the soup. The staff who worked there were very kind. Life is never the goal, but the journey, and I have great memories of the Star. God Bless the Star Hotel staff! read more

This is a must dine in Elko. When you walk in you know it's been there for a long time, in a good way. They have the original bar that comes with it's own trough (ask the bartender and they'll tell you the why ). We had a large party on a Saturday night so I would recommend reservations. They had a live band with a singer and accordion playing traditional Basque music. The food was delicious! We had the buffalo and it was cooked perfectly. I don't know what garlicky goodness is on their green salad but it was divine! The service was excellent and the cocktails delicious. This is not a quiet dining experience but if you are looking for excellent food, cocktails, and a happy family atmosphere, this is the place! I have a little bit of a layover here in Elko, NV. and someone told me if I were ever in Elko, I needed to stop at the Star Hotel for the steak sandwich. So here we are in Elko at the Star Hotel for lunch. I was told this sandwich comes in two sizes and was about $14 for the big sandwich. Well, looks like the menu has changed a little and the prices have gone up, but I suppose what hasn't. Now I see on the menu, it's called the New York Steak Sandwich and you can get a whole for $16.25 for a half for $10.00. It doesn't say how big the steak is, but I think I was told it was a 12 oz. You can opt for sauteed mushrooms or cheese for $1.00 each extra and served on a big French roll. Fries come with the sandwich. I get the whole steak sandwich as does my friend, what the hell, we're here lets go for it! The food arrives fairly quickly and wow, that's a big sandwich. It's not sliced steak, but the whole piece plopped between the French roll. If I stuffed onions or mushrooms in there, I don't think I could open my mouth that wide! I guess one could, use a knife and cut it up and eat the bread by itself, but lets go for it and chomp into that meaty sandwich. My teeth actually sink thru and bite off the tender steak. No struggling and pulling gristle here and then have the meat fall out and land on the floor! Tasty meaty flavor and french fries! My friend likes his as well, though I barely can finish mine. I say do get this when you come here to the Star Hotel. The rest of the food here is Basque style food, Nevada style Basque, which is basically you can think of as Spanish (not Mexican), cowboy food. It's in the style of the sheepherders on the open plains of Nevada, as opposed to the Basque food of the small norther region in Spain with French influences in cuisine. The food here is served family style except for your entree. The appetizer, salads and potatoes and veggies you pass around among your party. It's a lot of food, though not particularity sophisticated in a foodie sense, but basic food and a lot of it. I was just here for this steak sandwich and I'd return for that next time I have to spend time in Elko. read more

Yes you get an abundance of food. Our meal started off with cabbage soup, salad and the main course, which for me was a ribeye steak with saute garlic on top. The dinner was good. As mentioned in other posts mask are partially worn by the staff and none of the patrons had them on. There is a bowl of crutons on the table to add to your soup or salad, however they don't bring a fresh bowl out when they flip the table.
