This is a must dine in Elko. When you walk in you know it's been there for a long time, in a good way. They have the original bar that comes with it's own trough (ask the bartender and they'll tell you the why ). We had a large party on a Saturday night so I would recommend reservations. They had a live band with a singer and accordion playing traditional Basque music. The food was delicious! We had the buffalo and it was cooked perfectly. I don't know what garlicky goodness is on their green salad but it was divine! The service was excellent and the cocktails delicious. This is not a quiet dining experience but if you are looking for excellent food, cocktails, and a happy family atmosphere, this is the place! I have a little bit of a layover here in Elko, NV. and someone told me if I were ever in Elko, I needed to stop at the Star Hotel for the steak sandwich. So here we are in Elko at the Star Hotel for lunch. I was told this sandwich comes in two sizes and was about $14 for the big sandwich. Well, looks like the menu has changed a little and the prices have gone up, but I suppose what hasn't. Now I see on the menu, it's called the New York Steak Sandwich and you can get a whole for $16.25 for a half for $10.00. It doesn't say how big the steak is, but I think I was told it was a 12 oz. You can opt for sauteed mushrooms or cheese for $1.00 each extra and served on a big French roll. Fries come with the sandwich. I get the whole steak sandwich as does my friend, what the hell, we're here lets go for it! The food arrives fairly quickly and wow, that's a big sandwich. It's not sliced steak, but the whole piece plopped between the French roll. If I stuffed onions or mushrooms in there, I don't think I could open my mouth that wide! I guess one could, use a knife and cut it up and eat the bread by itself, but lets go for it and chomp into that meaty sandwich. My teeth actually sink thru and bite off the tender steak. No struggling and pulling gristle here and then have the meat fall out and land on the floor! Tasty meaty flavor and french fries! My friend likes his as well, though I barely can finish mine. I say do get this when you come here to the Star Hotel. The rest of the food here is Basque style food, Nevada style Basque, which is basically you can think of as Spanish (not Mexican), cowboy food. It's in the style of the sheepherders on the open plains of Nevada, as opposed to the Basque food of the small norther region in Spain with French influences in cuisine. The food here is served family style except for your entree. The appetizer, salads and potatoes and veggies you pass around among your party. It's a lot of food, though not particularity sophisticated in a foodie sense, but basic food and a lot of it. Yes you get an abundance of food. Our meal started off with cabbage soup, salad and the main course, which for me was a ribeye steak with saute garlic on top. The dinner was good. As mentioned in other posts mask are partially worn by the staff and none of the patrons had them on. There is a bowl of crutons on the table to add to your soup or salad, however they don't bring a fresh bowl out when they flip the table. We ordered a Petite Filet with Crab at "Market Prices" since nothing was specified on the menu. How expensive could it be? Try $103 dollars for that one entree. As is the norm when we go through Elko we stop at the star for dinner. On this night, we stopped in and found absolutely no one wearing a mask. This is at the absolute worst part of the pandemic and the restaurant continues to seat people at shared tables and absolutely no social distancing. I was amazed at the whirlwind of ball gowns, trucker hats, flannel shirts, ruffles, Quigley hats, and even skinny jeans! Everybody loves The Star! So tip back a few kalimotxos, relax, and get ready to stuff yourself full of garlic-infused, meaty goodness. I had the Baked Lamb, and it was so, so good. But I'm surprised I had room for it after all the food I ate before. I couldn't let a dish go by without piling on more food. Even the green beans that so many reviewers complain about were crisp, fresh, and delicious. The bread was so gorgeous I had to take its picture. I seem to be the only one who likes the spaghetti, but dammit, I DO like the spaghetti! Just so much hearty food, enhanced by the best seasoning--friends and alcohol. If you can take it, a pitcher of Picon is always a good time. A good time...that's pretty much the experience you should go for here. It may not be the fanciest food in the world, but it's not supposed to be. It's the food you use to fill up on after weeks in the high country and that soaks up the copious amounts of alcohol you're pouring down your throat. I planned a stopover in Elko so I could eat Basque food, but arrived after all the restaurants were closed. So stayed for lunch the next day at Star Hotel and I'm glad I did. My meal was the "Boarder Lunch" at $10.75 consisting of: iceberg lettuce chunks in a creamy garlicky dressing; cabbage soup in a strong meat/tomato base; wonderful and tender flank steak grilled and topped with strong griddled onions and a long mild chili pepper; and crisp fries. Huge portions of all and when my kid ordered a cheeseburger the waitress pointed out the sides were enough for both. It was a plus that we shared the table with a local couple of which the husband actually used to live at the hotel. They told us they rotate among the 3 local Basque restaurants (this one, Biltoki and Nevada; there's also the Toki Ona next to the Days Inn where we stayed but it doesn't have much Basque on the menu). Biltoki is the most traditional, they reported, and the only one that still serves pickled marinated tongue (dinner only) but at lunchtime Star is clearly the local favorite. (I poked my head in at Biltoki to compare the crowd, and Nevada isn't open at lunch.) A tip for travelers, the Google map is screwed up. If you get off at the main downtown exit you need to go south on 5th toward and past Idaho/Business 80, the main drag. Silver is 2 blocks further on and you make a right. And if you're thinking of staying overnight, Elko is your best bet for many miles around. read more

It's a indeed a Star here in Elko. Been around forever. When I said I was coming the first time, I had friends from around the country share their experiences over the last 30 years. Initially, I was coming for the Picon Punch. You just don't find it many places, not do you find Amer Picon alcohol in liquor stores in small towns, except in places like Elko and Wendover. Better exist, but not when you add in where you're at. We and a great time at the bar and visiting with locals and the bar staff. It doesn't get much better. I've know about the Basque heritage and history in Northern Nevada, but this place really brings it into focus. The food is far more than anyone can eat. Much of it is like the cafeteria food I got a school as a kid. On the other hand, some of it was very good. The entrees were first rate. The prime rib better than expected and how can you ruin King Crab too badly? The fries are to die for. I love the water pitchers, I grew up with them in the midwest. The communal dining works. Everything here was absolutely great until . . . I asked if the juke box actually worked. The bartender's enthusiastic reply was, "Yes! Of course!" I thought, "Great!" I asked the two people at the bar who were talking to me if they had any requests. "No, we trust you," was the reply. I put in a $5 bill. I chose Neil Young's "Harvest Moon." Came on instantly, sounded great. I chose three other tunes while that song was playing. And then I put in a $20, to play lots more. And when the second song began, the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," the volume went from AUDIBLE to INAUDIBLE. The bartender (one of them) just simply, TURNED IT WAY DOWN so that the music could not be heard. Infuriating. Who does that? YES, PLAY THE JUKE BOX. AND AFTER YOU HAVE PUT IN $25, WE WILL TURN IT SO FAR DOWN YOU WON'T HEAR IT. I left a nice tip for my meal, and walked out. My point: This place IS great. But if you love juke boxes/music etc., be forewarned. I guess I'm kind of gobsmacked because I've never experienced such a thing: at the very least, the bartender should have given me a heads up, either before or after. read more

The Star is more of an experience then a great meal (but the food is good). You walk into a old bar from the street that could be from any great western. It was full of mostly local people, and had a great vibe. After a cocktail at the bar, we were seated. There are small table, but several community tables, where you could be seated with others. This is what we got. The star specializes in Basque meats, like lamb, and beef. I choose the rib eye, and my friend had the sirloin, Here's where the fun starts. The sides....You don't order them, they just come....Family style...big bowls, or plates of food. First comes a cabbage soup. Upon first glance, it doesn't look like much, but wow...the flavor !!! I had 2 bowls of it. Then bread and butter, them=n green beans with chunks of garlic, then basque beans (pinto) and garbanzos (yummm), then spaghetti (full yet?), a wonderful, but simple salad and your entree. The food was good and the servers friendly but other than masks on most of the servers, Covid protections were clearly far from a priority. The cooks weren't wearing masks at all (i could see them from my seat when the door was open) nor was the hostess, nor the bartenders, nor was the dishwasher who brought out the "clean" dishes. I was under the impression that a Basque restaurant would have outstanding lamb . Was I ever wrong !! the two chops couldn't be cut with a steak knife .Hard,dry ,and unpalatable. We've been traveling across country and have observed mask wearing and COVID-19 protection practices all over. Last Friday we walked into the Star Hotel in Elko, Nevada looking forward to a Basque dinner. They had large wooden spools outside as temporary tables, but we learned they were used only for lunch. The menu looked good, and the place was packed, but we walked out. It was our single worst experience of NO COVID-19 protection practices. The bar was packed with locals talking and drinking and the restaurant wasn't separated from the bar. The server showed me to a table surrounded by full tables with separation, nobody was wearing a mask, no changes about menus or single serve condiments. We started at the bar and had a drink while we were waiting for a table. Super friendly bartender and obviously lots of locals drinking and eating. There was a bronc riding competition from Utah on TV and the young lady sitting next to us was hollering as her boyfriend was riding. Definitely a cowboy town. Food was good. I had a ribeye (which was huge) and although excellent, it was extremely fatty. My buddy had the bacon wrapped filet (which I believe came with two or three filets). Other than them forgetting to include blue cheese crumbles, he said they were excellent. Did I mention to come hungry? Dinner came with bread, soup, salad, pasta, two types of beans, amazing french fries and maybe one more dish (that I can't seem to remember). Service was quick and the servers were very nice. Start with a knife and fork, but no one will judge if you decide to pick it up and gnaw straight off the bone! I was on a business trip in Elko with two colleages, meeting up with three of our Elko colleagues. It was my first time in Elko, and my colleagues told me that we absolutely HAD TO eat here during our trip. We arrived at the restaurant around 4:15pm. There were a few people at the bar, but no one waiting to eat. The restaurant was not going to start seating until 5pm, and they did not have a list. I don't really understand that policy, but you'll see it worked out for us. Because we had 45 minutes to kill, we grabbed some bar stools and looked over the drink menu. I was immediately amazed by their selection of wine and by the great prices. I ordered a bottle of Decoy Cab for $39 - that's not even double the retail price! I've seen glasses of Decoy for $10-15 at restaurants in Reno. As we were hanging out in the bar area, the place started filling up. There continued to be confusion about what we had to do to get a table. One of our Elko colleagues went back to the podium to check on the situation and reported back that there were some names written down for tables. The bartender heard us talking and told us not to worry, that she would take care of us. By this time, the entire bar and waiting area were seriously packed. The bartender left the bar, grabbed our group, grabbed some menus, and led us into the dining room. So, a little weird and unorganized when it comes to getting a table, but it all worked out for us! Enough about that - let's talk about the food! My colleagues recommended splitting a steak three ways. I thought that was a little odd, but I agreed. We also ordered a bottle of house wine for the table. Not as good as the Decoy, but only $12! Shortly after ordering, the food explosion began. Soup, salad, french fries, beans and bread all came to the table in an orderly succession. The soup - delicious. The salad - heavy on the dressing which is usually a turn-off for me, but I actually had a second helping! French fries, bread, beans - all good. Then, our giant steak arrived! It was honestly plenty for the three of us, especially after all of the amazing starters. It was perfectly cooked, too. Note - typically I like medium-rare, but I was warned that they cook a little on the rare, so we ordered medium, and it was perfect! All in all, a delicious meal. This place is a a must go or even better a must stop place in Elko. I'm not an expert on basque food but I sure love home style food and I sure love over eat !! The start in Elko is a vary famous basque restaurant. They take reservations for big parties if you have one I do encourage you to make it. Otherwise try to make it before or after busy hours. They have a bar where a lot of people wait to be seated. You can enjoy an infamous "peacon punch" which is like a very well known basque drink. It is very strong, especially for women (not for me though). Like any traditional basque restaurant, you are seated in a dining table with strangers which is awesome because you get to know new people. They bring you unlimited bread, home made soup, salad and wine. Everything is always so flavorful and tasty. By the time your main course is here you are so full!! Not only your main curse is huge but the sides are ridiculously big they bring you french fries, pasta, green beans, beans and corn. I have ordered ribeye and lamb here they both are huge and very flavorful. I love food and my favorite part of every meal is the dessert so I could not skip dessert at a famous basque restaurant. I had a Tiramisú and it was delicious!! What I love the most about basque food is their homemade style and this place for sure have a wonderful seasoning. Don't expect El Bulli. Do expect a warm welcome, great ambiance, cold txocoli (Basque sparkling white wine), gracious service, and very generous portions at friendly communal tables. We went here during the Basque Festival and it was packed. There was live music and an 1.5 hour wait for a table. But we didn't mind waiting because we met nice people, enjoyed our drinks and a basket of croutons. The food had nothing to do with Basque cuisine. Sadly no cod, red peppers, or pinxtos. Mountain Trout was not bad. Amazing French fries. Garlic prawns pretty tasty. Cabbage soup was salty goodness. Canned green beans just awful. Enormous bowl of soggy iceberg lettuce drowning in mayo was called a salad. Sloppy plating and really wasteful portion sizes. Our leftovers could have fed another family. All in all, we loved it. Food could definitely be better but you can't beat the Star Hotel for a genuine taste of local Basque community spirit. At this point does this restaurant even need my review? The place itself is cozy, if you come in during busy hours you'll be sharing a table with others and endure a long wait. But is it worth the wait? Yes a million times over. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. But let's be real, the food is why you show up. The steaks are all phenomenal, the steak sandwich is my favorite lunch item, topped with as much garlic as it can hold. There isn't a day that goes by that I miss it now that I live in Iowa. Not into steak? They serve lobsters as big as your head! Everything else from the salad to the bread pudding is just an experience in flavor that can't be described. What else can I say?
