We stopped by for a traditional Basque lunch while driving through Nevada in I-80 and we were not disappointed. The Star Hotel is a fairly non-descriptive brick and wood building, erected in 1910 as a boarding house and meeting place for the Basque herders settling the region. It has a lovely hammered tin ceiling and is crowded with long tables full of guests eating family style. We had a traditional Basque lunch that starts with salad (much like a Cesear) and cabbage soup, with a half loaf of French bread and butter pats. This was followed by three delicious fried pork loins topped with a grilled red pepper and piles of grilled garlic, along with a plate of heaping golden fries. The pork was sweet and tender. The remainder of the food was interesting but not and homey, not at all as flavorful as I was expecting. Basque food is pretty plain fair as to be expected by sheep herders camping out all summer with their flocks. The service was fast and furious, the servers bustled to get everyone served--lunch is from 11-2. The menu has many other choices if you don't want to eat family still. We called ahead of time to make a reservation but were told that reservations are only accepted for groups over 8 and that it shouldn't be busy so we can get a table at. 6pm. We got there at about 5:45 pm and were told there is an hour wait for a table for 2. And we were told that they are NOT EVEN BUSY. bull $#^! We left and had a dinner somewhere else. Hate that place already. Would love to give it a 0 or a negative star if it's an option! !!!! We went here during the Basque Festival so we had to wait a good amount of time for a seat. Staff was very friendly and moving fast to serve everyone. The food is good, the sides are so plentiful you have to be careful not to load up before the steak comes. My prime rib was good, it did have a lot of fat, but ended up taking that back for the dog since there was so much food! Family style eating and our waitress was great. read more

We eat at The Star whenever we are in Elko. This time was a huge mistake! There is no social distancing happening at all. They didn't remove any tables and so everyone was seated extremely close to other people. We were seated at one of their group tables with other people. They were drunk and being obnoxiously loud. We were so uncomfortable that we quickly ate our food so we could get out of there. Looking back we wished we had left, but unfortunately we stayed. As far as the food: as always the soup and salad were good. However the spaghetti was cold and the beans had no flavor. My biggest complaint however is they are obviously in denial that we are in a pandemic. Again our mistake was not walking out the door! We will not be back. read more

Haven't eaten here in a while so I drove from Vegas to have dinner with a friend! I decided to have the 12 oz fillet with an 18oz lobster tail! Didn't ask the price as I figured it should be around 80.00 per person. The fillet was overcooked and the lobster tail was just ok. The soup and salad are always good. Didn't have a drink, just water! Got the bill and my friend and I had the same thing! The total with tax was 302.00. With a 20 percent tip, the meal was 360.00. I was kind of shocked! I have never had a meal cost that much money! My friend wasn't a girl friend, just a friend! I am sad to report that my 5 star review of this establishment, has now dropped to 1 stars. The experience I had at this restaurant was a complete 180 from the last experience I had here. My last experience was wonderful. The service was fantastic, the food was flavorful and the quality was fantastic. This new experience, was such a let down! It was so frustrating because this was my favorite place in town! Within the last 3 weeks, I have eaten here 8x (@$60/visit..that's $480 in a 3 week period). When we first arrived (around 5 pm) the restaurant was not busy. There were 2 other tables besides ours and maybe 2 people in the bar, so no wait time. We ordered: Steak sandwich with fries: We decided to split the steak sandwich (we weren't hungry enough to order 2 Like we normally do). The sandwich was ordered medium rare. After we ordered, the server brought out a few side items that are served with every meal. The sides were soup, salad, bread, beans, spaghetti and fries. The soup, bread and fries are always the best sides. The others are normally lacking in flavor and cold. When the sandwich arrived at our table, it was well done. We pointed the temperature mistake out to our server (tina) and she offered to remake the sandwich (she said this happens occasionally). We agreed and chose to wait for a remake. When she brought out the second sandwich, it was almost all fat!!! We took 4 bites and every bite had to be spit out!! (I included pictures as reference). We showed the waitress and she agreed that it was bad! She apologized profusely and took it back. About 5 min after she took the sandwich back, the owner (scott?) showed up at our table. He acted extremely aggravated and defensive. He told us how wrong we were for sending it back and was very rude to us. This was new for me. I have never had an owner treat me as though I was at fault for a mistake that the kitchen made. He told us that he "never has food sent back" and "he can't believe we sent it back." Wow...hmmm. Well, when a customer has a complaint (especially a warranted complaint) you fix the problem and apologize for the inconvenience. The way he acted, was very surprising. His lack of customer service and common courtesy was appalling. If you look to the photos for reference, it shows exactly how bad the steak turned out. You can see the fat riddled through it. After we asked for our check (we didn't even eat the sandwich) the waitress brought us our ticket. Now, the sandwich is $22.00. So our check, including tax, should have been around 25.00. Our check was $45!!! We immediately called our waitress over and told her that there had to be a mistake! She told us that they charged us $14 to split the sandwich!! 14! Wow. For 8 more dollars.....we could have had an entire other steak sandwich! We told our server that she hadn't informed us of that fee and how aggravated we were. She said "sorry" and shrugged her shoulders! What the actual heck.... $45 for an uneaten, overcooked and fat riddled half a sandwich!....we paid our tab and left. I will never recommend this place to locals or passing travelers! Save your money! The owner, very obviously doesn't care about his customers. Ask anyone from Elko and they will tell you that the best restaurant in town is Star. These people are seriously culinarily deprived. One star for the entrees which were all actually pretty good. One star for being a super cute match to the small mining town. Charm the place does have. The rest of the meal was so bad it was laughable. They start you out with family style dishes that include a cabbage soup that reminds me head on of my cabbage soup diet and salad with NOTHING more than iceberg lettuce and too much blue-cheese dressing. They claim the dressing is a family secret but my only guess is that they don't have blue-cheese in Elko or else diners don't let on that they know better. Then you order your main course and it comes with more family-style sides: green beans straight from the can; red-beans without flavor or salt; the worst spaghetti I have ever tasted (they must have a special vacuum in the back that sucks all of the flavor out); and french fries that were old and cold. Good news is that it's super cheap. Five of us left there with a bill of only $150 and one in our party ordered the lobster and we got a bottle of wine. read more

This review is based on two people visiting twice at dinner, ordering steaks. PROS: Tasty, basic steak, cow-town character. Sadly, one of the better choices in Elko -- if you order carefully. Hosts, employees nice. Garlic in everything. CONS: All the extra stuff that comes if you order (and pay for) the "dinner" is pretty bad. Garlic in everything. This is Elko, so adjust expectations accordingly. And though this is a Basque restaurant, my guess is that like any other American version of international cuisine, plenty gets lost in translation. My advice: order the filet À LA CARTE and, depending on your hunger, SPLIT IT. (Theirs is not a "petit filet" or "filet mignon," this is about 3-4 times that size.) If you see the price for the steak "dinners" you'll think "wow, this is expensive for non-Michael Pollan-recommended beef in the middle of nowhere with certainly no budget spent on ambience, so what's the deal?" Here the deal: the "dinner" price includes a ton of food, most of it you probably don't want depending on your definition of good food. For example: They bring a bowls of watery miscellaneous vegetable soup that looks like it's scooped from the garbage disposal, a platter of overcooked (canned?) olive-drab green beans, a platter of limp iceberg lettuce "salad" saturated with tons of garlic-mayonnaise dressing, a platter of overcooked Chef Boyardee-style "spaghetti" slathered in acrid sauce, and what seemed like package soft rolls and maybe some fries of some sort. I wonder how much leftover food this place throws out each year. Like Picasso's "Guernica," there are lots of meaty parts, but over all, it's a Basque tragedy. This is not a snob thing. I like all those sides and comfort food in general, I just prefer fresher food that's not over-boiled and such. This is about execution, not formality. Our family travels through at least twice per year; stayed in Elko once for a whole week during the Cowboy Poetry festival, another time a couple of days before and after a backpacking in the Ruby Mountains, but we won't stay in town other than overnight again. Alright folks here's the skinny on one of my favorite places on earth, the good, the bad, and the ugly. The ugly is me after two of the pecan punches from the bar, although the drink itself is yummy. The bad the soup, beans, spaghetti, and fries. I don't know why but they suck, so just know that and get over it or you'll miss out on the good. The good is pretty much everything else. For lunch you can watch the place fill up with fifty locals and watch about 48 of them order the steak sandwich, do the same, you'll be glad you did, it's the best steak sandwich you'll eat. For dinner it's simply a matter of not pigging out on bread and salad while you wait for what could be the best fillet mignon of your life. The restaurant was recommended by the hotel we stayed at. Finding little else of interest we went despite some previous reviews warning of flavor-free cooking. The restaurant is located in the back of a building which is also a bar. Walking in I got the impression of a true small-town watering hole before realizing everyone had turned to see who had entered. Feeling a hundred eyes on the back of my head, we walked through the bar to the restaurant. It took a while to be seated due to the obvious popularity of the place. As soon as we were seated they brought out half a loaf of bread and a large blue plastic tureen of soup. The soup was vegetable in a thin chicken-type broth. It had lots of pieces of celery and carrot and a few unidentifiable white lumps which may have been pasta. It wasn't as salty as Campbell's soup but not as flavorful. I added plenty of pepper to mine. The bread was cold and not particularly good. The second course which came out was salad. A lot has been said about the salad already on Yelp so I won't elaborate too much further. It certainly was nothing more than iceberg lettuce drowning in dressing of dubious nature. We left most of it on the table. Finally, on to the main course! We had ordered one arctic cod main dish to share between two people. The fish itself was slightly overcooked but otherwise good. It certainly was the largest serving of fish I've ever seen identified as a "single" serving. It was cooked with some sort of salty spice mix and had plenty of butter on it. Along with the fish we were served: 1. a very large dish of thin-cut fries 2. a dish of overcooked green beens (my guess is not from the can, but of similar flavor and texture) 3. a plate of pinto beans (not baked beans, just plain beans) 4. a very sad imitation of spaghetti. By the time the fish came around I was close to full anyway because of everything that had come before it, and I felt very bad being unable to eat even a third of what had been placed before us. Seriously, the food served to the two of us could have easily fed four or five people. As for the side dishes themselves, the bean were boring, the spaghetti was truly bad, the green beans were overcooked, and the fries were cool in temperature. We did take the fish home in a doggie bag (literally a plastic bag with a cartoon cat and dog on the front) but left the rest. Overall the experience wasn't worth the calories and I feel great pity on those who believe this is a good dining experience. If you've experienced Basque food then you know what you're getting into. This is the down home, simple type of food that you got at grandma's house, unless your grandma is Paula Deen or Julia Child. The Star serves about as good of Basque food as any Basque restaurant I've been to, and as long as all the condiments are properly heated - soup, fries, and beans are all hot - then I would say this place rivals theGardnerville, NV "JT" in taste. Some people critiqued that the beans, soup etc., weren't seasoned. Well, if you like your food seasoned up, ask for garlic or use the salt and pepper on the table, that's why it's there. The Star did charge me for dessert, where the JT gives out a scoop of ice cream as part of the meal. IMHO, I would say this place is better than Louie's and far better than the Santa Fe in Reno (my one and only trip there was completely disappointing). These guys wouldn't win any Bobby Flay "Throw Downs" or "Iron Chef" competitions, it's not fancy shmancy food, but it's not $50 a head either, and provides an overall great family atmosphere. read more

First of all, keep in mind this is ELKO, Nevada, not Las Vegas or Reno or any other big city. Second, even if this place was in New York City, I would have thought it was great. The staff is friendly and helpful. Got a question? They're not afraid to answer as best they can. This is mostly a mining town, and most of the people that go here are bound to be locals and work in or with the mines in the area. They're also into Cowboy Poetry. As for the hotel part, it's mostly for retired sheep herders, but the bar and restaurant part is terrific. Local brews are recommended, though they have the traditional imported and national favorites as well if you just want to settle for MGD. The meal for dinner time is served in a multi course format, family style. The soup was pretty good in my opinion, and the steaks were not too bad either. The vegetables and fries were ok, and the bread was fresh and delicious. The overall atmosphere was pleasant and it was a full house with what seemed to be all happy people, all enjoying their meals. Waitresses were quick and polite and always on hand to help with orders anything else. If you're in Elko, NV, don't pass this little bit of history. It's an interesting place with some great people. If you're really bored, there's always Mona's down the street, but I wouldn't really know ;) 4 out of 5 because for the charm and atmosphere, and food, it's really good, but it's only in Elko, NV and so far from anywhere else... This was my first time at a basque restaurant- as its a spanish region I assumed it would be a spanish style restaurant but I was in for something completely different. My girlfriend had a gig in Elko and we were assured that this was the best in Elko. Tons of food. Bread was cheap french style variety. green beans were completely unseasoned, spaghetti seemed random to me, cabbage soup was decent at best, baked beans were ok etc. Everything seemed out of a can. By the time I got my king crab legs I was somewhat full on items I could have produced better in my own kitchen. I got the 1 lb portion and was given all joints that connect to the head aka the worst cuts and the pieces I find inedible typically. The crab was way over cooked and tough as well. The server came up and said that she noticed that I had gotten the unsavory sections and cooked me another portion which was much appreciated. I'm just not sure why a restaurant would even serve those pieces and charge $40 for it. By the time I got my second portion I was full and we had been at the restaurant for two hours and everyone else had finished their meals and we had to leave. Overall I was thoroughly unimpressed with the attentiveness of the wait staff, the quality of the food and what a rip off $40 for king crab legs is in the way they served it. What is even more confusing is the fact that everyone else seemed so satisfied by the meal, as well as most of the reviews from locals and Nevada residents. When I first went here, since I've never seen the fascination with lamb, that's what I ordered. First, the servings are family style, help yourself and dig in: two servers brought mass quantities of sides: beans, some kind of canned corn or something, bread, tasty(for frozen shoestring) fries, and a "salad" that was plain old iceberg lettuce with GREAT dressing. I could make a meal off the salad alone. The dressing recipe is a closely guarded secret, but you can get some to go, if you call in advance. Then our entrees arrived.... OMG!! Now that's what people talk about. My friend had grilled snapper, and loved it. She gave up a taste of it, and it was excellent(my Dad was a commercial fisherman and she grew up on the Straits of Juan de Fuca- we know fish). We waded through our entrees, happily making odd noises, and finished the night with by splitting a Picon Punch, made with a Basque liqueur....think Sangria laced with Everclear. I've never seen it, but people drink pitchers of this stuff. Friends were going to be driving on 80 a few weeks after us, and I told them to stop. My one friend said his Porterhouse was "the best steak I've ever had"......this from a guy with 30+ years working in restaurants from prep cook to chef. His wife loved her lamb. I've been back twice. I had the lamb once more, and wanted to go lighter with grilled chicken, and both were great. BTW, the person from Mendo County who said it is "very expensive" doesn't know what she's talking about: two dinners, 2 beers, 1 Picon Punch, $42. I thought that was very decent. read more

Having to travel and work in Elko was a drag until I discovered the Star Hotel. I see a lot of snooty naysayers reviewing this place and think they need to adjust their expectations a bit. Family style seating is a bit itimidating to the uninitiated and yes, the side dishes are not going to win any awards but the main course dishes are as good as I have had anywhere and are 2-3 times as big. One suggestion, order around before you try the bacon wrapped filet - once you eat that beast, you can't bother yourself ordering anything else. It is the best steak (at any price) I have ever eaten. For reference, I spend 110-140 nights per year on the road. This place is a jewell in the midst of a god-forsaken desert. read more

So, I don't think I can tell you anything new about this place. Ambiance - oh yeah, just what you hope a Basque restaurant will be. There are the long, group, family-style tables. But there are also some 2 and 4 tops, if you don't feel like a group meal. Bar - yep, friendly bartenders, the Picon punch and Kalimotxo along with a full bar of beer, wine and cocktails. AND baskets of those amazing house made croutons to munch on. Who knew crunchy bread could be so amazingly addictive. Food - darned good (especially for someone who hasn't had good Basque food in a while). BIG menu. Food Details - Cabbage soup - very good, not the best I've had and the bread was not the most wonderful (that happens after they convert it into croutons). That was OK because I have a tendency to over fill myself on soup and bread! Salad was perfection - crunchy icebergy stuff with great dressing (and croutons). Couldn't miss a bite of this. Fries - go away McDonald's and learn to cook fries the "Star way" - so good I brought my leftovers home! I had the "small" steak which I ordered rare - (after being in Utah/Nevada for a while, all my meat had been so overcooked that I wanted to be sure I didn't get leather). Well - they cooked it exactly as I ordered - rare. Next time I will order it medium rare because I know it will be done just as I ask. My husband had the baked lamb. OH MY GOSH. Very excellent. Fall off the bone tender, the juices..... I can't say enough about the wonders of this dish. It's just a steakhouse. All four stars above are for the incredible filet mignon. At lunch: steak sandwich at $11 or $12 should be more than you can eat. There are sometimes when a combination of business and familly obligations mean a local may eat here more than twice a week; in that case I'll play surgeon general and recommend fish--the halibut I think--and skip the cholesterol-evil sides (spaghetti with meat sauce, fries) and stick to the good sides (salad after excess dressing has been shaken off, soup, green beans). The sides are not spectacular in the culinary sense anyway and it should go without saying that if one is a vegetarian stick to the beer here. The salad dressing is by no means blue cheese. We were really looking forward to this meal given the reputation of the place. First off there are no COVID precautions in place. Staff are not wearing masks. There is no semblance of social distancing. There was a table set for 20 people in the back room. We're almost left and looking back that would have been the wisest thing. The cabbage soup was ok but not spectacular. Salad was soaked in dressing and not crisp at all. It was disappointing the bread was not warmed up and the butter was ice cold, not softened to make spreading it e easier. The green beans and beans are canned and blah. Pasta looked like spaghetti out of a can and not worth wasting your calories on. Highlights were the fries which were crisp and delicious! The baked lamb and steak were perfectly done, with yummy garlic on top. Picon punch was strong and done right. Kids had Mac and cheese which they loved. There was plenty to take home but we left the beans and salad. Overall a little spendy for the food quality. If you are in a high risk group for COVID don't come here. read more

Was in town for business, first time in Elko. Asked my customer for recommendations for places to dine. She recommended the "The Star Hotel", mentioning that they served Basque food, family style. I was very surprised at the amount of food served. I was a party of one & I has enough food for 2. Beans, green beans, fries, spaghetti, very simple lettuce salad (generous portion), very tasty cabbage soup, full basket of bread, bowl of croutons for your salad, & I ordered the baked lamb (good portion) The menu is straight forward, looked around the other tables, they were all different dishes, so I'm thinking everything there must be good. On our way from California to Utah we got a really good hint from a hotel manager to have our lunch here, and it did not disappoint! Hands down, this is the best place for basque in Nevada. Living in Reno for the last 7 years, I have made my way through all the basque restaurants in northern nevada, and this is by far, my favorite. The soup is yummy and fresh, the salad is creamy and garlicy, the sides are all good, but the steaks - OMG, the steaks! Like nothing you've ever had before. Savory, perfectly cooked every time, tender, and HUGE! I have shared a filet mignon between 3 of us and we still couldn't finish it. Nice option that you can buy one steak ($22-$30) and allow the sharers in the group to opt for sides only ($13). Awesome vibe, awesome food, awesome value. My family is from San Sebastian and the meal I had last night was miles away (or an ocean away) from the typical dishes prepared in Euskadi. As few diners have mentioned the white bread, soup, beans, pasta, fries and especially the salad were terrible. Bland and out of a can. The entrees were decent but totally unbasque and not prepared as such. So if you've never eaten in a basque restaurant before don't bother eating here as it won't give you a faint idea of what it is like and if you have...run away. To finish on a couple of positive notes, the service was great and the ambience lively and warm. That's as close as you'll get to a real basque restaurant ambiance. They serve dinner "family style," so you're going to get cabbage soup & salad to start immediately. That alone is enough to fill you up. Next comes spaghetti with meat sauce, red beans, garbanzo beans, green beans, & French fries along with your main course. I don't care how large an appetite you have, it will be difficult to finish your meal - we never have been able to. It's ok. Put down your fork and get a go-box. On this trip, my wife got the petite filet. I was very good, but it was over-cooked. She ordered medium rare & it was closer to well done. It was still tasty, but I have to confess, since we don't get to Elko very often, we were a tad disappointed. I had the lamb & it could not have been better. It was prepared in chunks an was very tender & tasty - very tender & tasty; OMG tender & tasty. It doesn't even matter if you don't think you like lamb, you'll find it so dang good. I've been coming here since my parents decided the Cowboy Poetry Festival would be the best family vacation ever, when I was about 5 or 6. I'm 23 now, and I really think that Star is a great place to eat in Elko. Came here in the middle of the week and there was still a long wait, but there is a long bar in front that serves a killer alcohol-tastic basque punch. Seating is family style, but normally they will space you out if there isn't a crowd. For $25 each, the fam and I got three huge lamb chops (each) smothered in garlic, cabbage soup, french bread, spaghetti, green beans, pinto beans, french fries and an iceberg salad smothered in what must only be known as 'amazing dressing.' For three people with drinks and dessert it was 100 bucks, and we had a great time. The waitress was very friendly and staggered our service so we got lots of time to enjoy each slew of courses. I think the food (the meat was great) is always pretty good, and hearty, which in winter is great. My brother says "it's an ambience place," and that's def. true. I have eaten take out there two times in the last week. Both times my order was not compete. They charged me for everything be failed to get everything in the bag. The baked lamb is the best! My second choice is the grilled cod. I eat hear twice a month at least. They never fail to bring their "A game". The service rocks and Scotty is by far the most generous host. If you've driven a while to get here, have a Picon and enjoy your meal. read more

This place is so cool! Make sure you bring your appetite, you get so much food! Hubby had the chicken fried steak and I got a petite ribeye. Both very good but I think my fav was the salad that comes with the meal. The service was great. I will definitely be back if I ever go through Elko. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because while food is very good, but it was not exceptional... but don't let that stop you! It was a great experience! read more

We had dinner here and it was excellent. Basque family style. The dining experience was fun and we stopped one day at the bar. Staff was friendly and the locals at the bar visited and talked about the history of the town and building. Had a great time. read more
