Food and service were wonderful. We had 7 people in our party and everyone loved it. We had the lamb and beef.

We stopped here on our way from Mammoth (CA) to Idaho for a late lunch. Oh my gosh I cannot sing enough praises. First of all, this is the friendliest service I have had at a restaurant in a really long time. But even better, the amount, quality, and value for the food is outstanding. I ordered the pork loin (after debating salmon) and it was the equivalent of 4- YES FOUR pork chops. And absolutely delicious. Add to this the family style cabbage soup (don't laugh, it's delicious) and Caesar-like salad and I have enough food for another dinner. Stop by - you won't be sorry! read more

A friendly place to stop in and have dinner... enjoyed bellying up to the bar while we waited for a table and having a nice glass of Rioja... and I mean glass, a generous pour in a normal glass, which was cool. As soon as we were seated, we started digging into the the food. Great bread and soup to warm our bellies. Followed by an iceberg lettuce salad with a tasty dressing, no shortage of garlic there. What a fun place to go for dinner! We drove in from Verdi, NV and stopped in Elko for the night. We read the Yelp review for The Star Hotel and decided to check it out. Walking in, it was a happening place with lots of locals, many in cowboy hats waiting in the bar before getting seated for dinner. Basque family style dining. The amount of food you are served is impossible to eat in one sitting. The soup and salad are both really good and items you don't often see in other restaurants. Now the other sides served are below par fries, beans, and spaghetti which seemed like they come from a can. The portions of meat are HUGE and served with lots of garlic. The tricky part is getting your meat cooked the way you order which rarely ever happens. If your lucky you might get your own table otherwise you will be awkwardly seated with people you don't know. read more

Fun historic place and if your into Basque food then this is a must stop. Extremely busy and dining room small and awkward with large swinging doors from the kitchen that swing constantly. Each time that I am in town for business in Elko, my colleges and i always go to Star Hotel for the most amazing basque food. They provide you with so many delicious courses and promptly. The staff there are very pleasant and there for your every need. My colleges and I shared the filet mignon (that should tell you how large it is) and it was full of flavor and tender as could be! The garlic that was beautifully placed on the steak added the extra flavor that took it to the top! This is a great experience for people that either come in small or large groups! read more

I had the petite filet with garlic slices on top holy heck - tender and flavorful!! Basque restaurants are family style so your entree comes with shareable sides. They gave ridiculously generous portions at this place - my steak came with cabbage soup to start which was ok but the bread was soft and fresh. Other sides were 2 types of beans plus green beans, spaghetti, salad with a ridiculously naughty garlic dressing and some of the best thin cut fries I have ever tried. There was no way I was going to eat it all so I indulged in the filet and fries mainly. And some of the sides were "meh" anyway. Green beans were tasty. Wow, quite an experience for a first-timer. First-time to the Star, first time having Basque cuisine. As far as I can tell, you just basically select your main course -- I chose Baked Lamb. Everything else is standard. Loads of bread, filling cabbage soup, simple salad, French Fries, even spaghetti with meat sauce, all standard, so bring your appetite. I was almost done by the time the lamb arrived, and what lamb it was! Four large bone-in pieces of lamb, simply spiced and roasted. Must have been 2-3 pounds including bones; 1-2 pounds without. That is a challenge for one man to consume, but I did my best. I don't think I could eat here every night, or even every week, but this is a very special establishment. If you're passing through town, or celebrating a birthday perhaps, I can't think of a better place to have dinner in Elko. read more

We had a very pleasant dinner at the Star Hotel. Kids enjoyed the music and dance. We shared a perfect t-bone stake and yummy lamb chops (3pieces) for 2 adults, one teenager, and one toddler. Love the star. Steaks are always great, staff is friendly and atmosphere is comfortable. Fair warning if you've not eaten here before - if you order garlic with your steak, they take that request VERY seriously and you may want to consider sleeping on the couch that night as to not chase away your spouse. read more

If you're in Elko, you have to stop by and try this place. The food is to die for. I had a NY steak sandwich. My husband had a sirloin steak. My mom had the Boarders Lunch. My sandwich was so juicy and full of flavor. You have the option add garlic. We also had salad, soup and bread. Everything was delicious. This place is the straight up bomb.com. We live in Long Beach but come to Elko to visit family and it's an absolute must every single time. Family style dining, casual. But sooooo delicious. Absolutely promise you will never leave here hungry. I usually get the filet mignon, rare, with garlic. It's incredible. And the picon punch is great. Maybe too great. A couple of those will put you on your ass! Great atmosphere, great steaks, great drinks. I seriously crave this place. The cabbage soup and salad are my favorite of the starters, but everything is good. It's hard not to fill up before your meat comes! I tried my mother in law's spicy prawns and they were really good too. Nice size large shrimps with just the right amount of heat and smoky flavor. I have never been this impressed with restaurant food in my life. I honestly feel as though the Star should be heralded as the peak of Basque dining experience. And to put your mind to ease, this is not my first Basque food experience. Growing up I had family friends who truly showed us the culture, cuisine, and atmosphere of a family. The Star held up to all of that. Family style dining with new meaning. The service was supreme as they had to endure a bunch of us on vacation slightly worse for drink I don't think it was the easiest experience for them. They performed amazingly considering. As we dined family style, we all shared everything, even our choice dishes and I will say that you can't go wrong. The lamb melted in my mouth, the fish was the perfect level of spice, each bite was better than the last and my eventual food coma was well earned. Can't say enough and I hope the owners, servers, and bartenders remember us as fondly as we remember them. read more

I really love Basque food. This is probably the worst Basque Restaurant I have ever been to. The food was very very Bland. The soup was probably about the best of anything but just average. Salad was average. Beans and spaghetti were totally disgusting. Also when they brought the entree they brought me the wrong size steak so rather than cooking the proper one gave me two of the smaller ones. Was supposed to be a ribeye but it was more like a top sirloin at best. Had to try this place really cool inside atmosphere for Basque place but we won't be dining here ever again. if you are into quantity this is a place for you but if you're looking for quality move on. read more

This place was packed and seems to be good for large groups. The food was spiced well. The service was pretty good. But this style of basque food is pretty heavily cooked, well over cooked. 15 years after first hearing how wonderful this place is, I finally made it! From the pecan punch, to the meal, to the locals at the bar who were friendly and hilarious, it's 5 stars all the way! I was taking a group out while up there last week and this was the place I knew I should go and they were all pleased as well. The walls are covered in history and the owner was on site. Dinner was some of the most delicious cabbage soup with fresh bread I have ever had. This was followed by a fresh salad before the beans, green beans and fries were all served along with our entrees. The menu offers a number of petit cuts. Word to the wise, that's probably sufficient. NO ONE finished their whole entree in the group. I had the New York strip with garlic...wow! what can i say, i love Basque restaurants! The Star is at the top of my list in the US! I've been going every two weeks at lunch time and I'll tell you what, the ambience is old west/European wonderful, the staff is amazing! everybody is always so considerate of me and my service dog (im a disabled veteran) and the food is beyond words! omg! my current favorites are the "borders lunch" (i do love family style dining!) and the lamb burger i had last time! there is no way to go wrong eating here! and dont forget the traditional Basque cocktail, the "Picon Punch"! I mentioned id ordered the 1/2 sandwich and she verified that but... they add on. $5 "togo" charge on it.
