Growing up in El Paso, I've been to the State Line more times than I could count. However, this was my first time as an adult and my first time since moving out of state 3 years ago. We came to celebrate my Dad's birthday after his long day of work and me flying in earlier that day. He was raised Texan and was really craving some Texas BBQ. We came around 7:30pm and took about 15 minutes to be seated. I was really impressed by their in-store liquor store. You can pick and choose your choice of bottled alcohol where it can then be taken to your table while you're waiting or eating. That was super dope! After getting seated, we ordered and they brought us their famous bread and honey-butter - super delicious! I ordered their combo plate with half marbled meat and half a rack of beef ribs. Unfortunately I wasn't impressed with the quality or method of preparation of the meat. I'm not a fan of cole slaw and their potato salad was strong on the mustard flavor. As for the rest of the party, they were also disappointed. They did bring out a complimentary ice cream that my dad appreciated. Probably won't ever come back here again. read more

First time visiting The State Line was on a Saturday Night for a retirement party. It's quite the...interesting layout. You walk into an open air courtyard with a stage at the end and some outdoor tables and chairs. It's been awhile since we've been around live music, so we we're pretty excited! To the left you have a building with the bar, restrooms, and dining area. The Woodford was a little pricey, but if you order bourbon from a bar, it wasn't unexpected. The wheat bread loaf folks rave about was pretty good, but I was more impressed with the grilled vegetables...they were delicious and perfectly done. The BBQ meat left some room for improvement and the potato salad was a bit heavy on the dill. Living on the far east side of El Paso, I would visit here again, but I wouldn't plan a trip around it. read more

Went here on recommendations from a few. I was on a business trip and I was alone so I decided to sit at the bar. Even though it was empty, it seemed like I wasn't allowed to sit there as the hostess had to get permission to seat me at the bar. I was planning to have some food and a drink..or 2 or 3. However, after ordering I was given a total and asked to pay. The bartender seemed shocked that I thought it was weird that he was charging me already. I'm at a bar and ordered a drink right away, what's weird about that? Because I'm alone? Is this how El Paso does business? So, I give my card and of course the charge machine asks for a tip....on what??? I have yet to get my food and I am not even sure if it will come, or if it's edible, or if it's correct, or any other number of things. I'm not sure if you have to prepay like a gas station because the bartender was new, or if that's just the way they do business, but it felt cold and rude. It almost seemed like they didn't want me there. As for the food: I ordered the 5 meat smokehouse platter. Came with potato salad, Cole slaw, beans, regular bread (wasn't asked to upgrade to their "famous homemade bread" but it was an extra charge). Pork rib- wasn't too bad. Tenderness was solid but not really seasoned at all. The "skin" on the 3rd rib was actual not edible. I chewed on it for a minute but it wouldn't even separate, just stayed hard and chewy. Beef rib- get out the BBQ sauce on this one as it's not seasoned at all and has zero flavor. Not even a whole lot of meat on it, mostly just fat. Peppered Turkey- not bad, just generic. I question if it was cooked there. Pros: Juicy and the pepper on the edge was pretty good. Sausage- Average smoked sausage but was good. Quite possibly the best thing on my plate. Brisket- I went with the marbled. Terrible. Chewy and flavorless. Some bites were almost bitter. One of the worst I've EVER had. I honestly couldn't say enough bad things about this brisket and I struggle to even say one good thing about it, it's just plain gross. I couldn't even stomach all of it. House margarita- bland and watered down. This place lacks flavor in almost everything. Maybe the sour taste that was put in my mouth when I ordered overpowered the taste of everything. I had not been back to the State Line BBQ in a few years so I decided a visit was in order. But, first, what is up with all the mixed reviews? They range from great to terrible? What is the real story? Inquiring minds want to know? Well, here's what I experienced. The restaurant was moderately busy when we arrived. There is a large parking lot out front so parking is not an issue. Inside the ambiance is nice, sort of an upscale cowboy restaurant. The place is a bit dark inside but comfortable. We were quickly led to a table by a hostess. The service overall was very good. Our drink orders were quickly taken and we ordered a basket of their special homemade bread. The warm, fresh bread (you do pay extra for bread) was, in my opinion just ok...nothing too special. I have certainly had better at a number of places. Rate the bread about a "B." Others in our party though thought the bread was very good. The main meals were brought to the table within ten or twelve minutes. Wanting to sample a number of their specialties I ordered the Five Meat Smokehouse Platter. The prices at State Line are quite reasonable. I found the baked beans to be pretty robust and flavorful. Rate them a "B+." The potato salad was fairly good but nothing to write home about. Rate it a "B-." The coleslaw on the other hand was pretty poor. Rate it a "D." Never order it. The pepper smoked turkey (which came in a small portion) had neither a smoked nor a pepper flavor. In fact none of the meats had much of a smoky flavor. What's up with that? The turkey was ok but it is just turkey. Rate it a "B" if you like ordering turkey at a BBQ joint. The sausage was pretty good but nothing too special. Rate it a "B." THE BRISKET WAS THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT. Not only was the sample quite parsimonious, but the meat was a bit dry and lacked flavor. Rate it a "B-." It was certainly not something to go out of your way for. Definitely not up to the standard Texas brisket. The beef rib was fairly good but it needed a covering of the BBQ sauce to make it good. (I might add that they gave you two versions of BBQ sauce in little plastic cups. Both were ok but nothing too special. The amount of sauce that came with the meals was, to be honest, quite stingy.) Rate the beef rib about a "B." The star of the show today was the St. Louis Pork Ribs. These were excellent. Very tasty ribs. If I return, that's what I'm going for. Rate the pork ribs an "A-." This was the only part of the entire meal that was outstanding. So, in sum, the ambiance is nice, the service is excellent, the food choices are plentiful, but the food is a mixed bag. Most of the food is in the good but not outstanding range. The only poor product was the coleslaw. Rate the overall dining experience about FOUR STARS or maybe FOUR AND A QUARTER STARS.....meaning good, but not reaching the level of an outstanding BBQ joint. read more

Homemade bread was some of the most delicious (including Mom's) I've ever had and the beer was ice cold!!!So I'd come back for both... unfortunately that's about all I'd come for. Baby back ribs were "cooked" but tough as hell to cut through and get off the bone. Seems odd that no one is aware. Flavor was just cooked pork with overly vinegar-ee BBQ sauce poured on them. Again this was strange. No sweet or savory hint at all. Beans "looked good" but were bitter as well. Although it had great variety of ingredients, the Potato salad was overly mustard-ee to the point where you couldn't taste anything else. Cole slaw was cold... When we come here we automatically skip the menu and order the all you can stand meal. A huge sampler platter with every meat you could dream of and mountains of sides comes your way. This is not something you'll find most places and should be treated like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert. The beef ribs here are super super tasty, the sauce is almost perfect. A large basket of fresh bread comes with the high end AYCE platter and also a delicious fresh cobbler. The inside is like a Texas style bar and grill, panelling, neon signs, and lots of kitschy memorabilia on the walls. This is without a doubt the worst BBQ I've ever had. The portions are huge but when the food is so bland it's not really a perk. We started with the chips and queso while we waited for our table. The chips were regular store bought nacho chips and the queso was just ok. We were so unimpressed that we left the app behind once our table was ready. We got the beef ribs, sausage and lean brisket. The ribs were bland on their own and I had to drench them in the barbecue sauce to eat them. The brisket tasted like and had the texture of paper. Even with barbecue sauce I couldn't get past the texture and did not eat it more than half a piece. It looked off, almost like sliced gyro meat but with none of the flavor. The sausage was the only good meat. The plates came with sides of beans, cole slaw and potato salad. The only one I ate was the potato salad. The beans were just bland but the cole slaw was gross. It was warm and salty. I don't like leaving bad reviews but this place is too expensive for how bad the food was. State Line is part of the County Line BBQ chain but adds the novelty factor. State Line straddles the New Mexico and Texas border. As far as I could tell from Google Maps while sitting in the building, half the dining room is placed on each state. I guess fittingly, the bathrooms are on the Texas side and they play how to speak cowboy on the speakers in there. I love how the drinks are reasonably priced with the cocktails in the $9-$10 range and beers around $4. They make for the perfect pairing with a good BBQ meal. We ended up ordering the giant margarita to share and they were kind enough to split it into 2 glasses without us even asking. With it being our first time we were intent on trying as many different items on the menu as we reasonably could. Unfortunately, the caldillo soup was no longer available at dinner. We were told they stopped serving it at 3:00 PM. We ended up ordering the combo where you can select 5 meats. We opted for the peppered turkey breast, marbled beef brisket, lean brisket, beef rib and pork ribs. Also an order of the chicken wings on top of that for good measure. The chicken wings were plump and juicy. They had a bit of smokiness from the grill which I enjoyed. My only issue was that the sauce was a bit much and overpowered the flavor of the wings themselves. I would probably order sauce on the side next time and dress it to my own taste. I have to say that all 5 of the meats we ordered from the combo were excellent. The turkey was surprisingly good as I typically expect turkey breast to be dry and this wasn't. Health reasons aside (we're at a BBQ restaurant for goodness sake), the marbled brisket is muuuuuuuuch better than the lean brisket. All the marbling just makes it more juicy and tender and I would be inclined to just double up on that rather than get one of each type next time. Very disappointed with my order. We ordered a rack of beef ribs for 35.90 with tax (comes with 7 ribs). They were meatless.. we normally get ribs here because of how meaty they are but not this time. They had very little meat. For the cost, I rather just smoke them myself. That's another thing, they lacked the taste of smoke. Very disappointed. I guess because we spent so much for 7 pieces of just bone. I would say, if you order to go, don't. You never know what you'll be getting. This place is a must stop whenever I land in El Paso. I usually go with my family so I've tried pretty much the whole menu, although for me the beef ribs are the star. The ribs themselves seasoned and cooked to still have a little bite on them not fall of the bone, the potato salad perfect with dill and the beans not bbq or sweet they are ranch chili style beans. We returned to 915, and it had been a while since we had EP BBQ, which is different than North Dallas BBQ. The 3 monkies were left with grandma, and the parents went to the State Line. The State Line is located on the border of Texas and New Mexico. There is plenty of parking in the front of the building and the dining area is big. We arrived early in the day, and it was empty, which allowed this fat guy to order the all you can eat plate with 6 meats. The wife kept it conservative and ordered the BBQ sandwich. Before the meal, warm bread was brought to the table, and that started my weight to go up quickly. It was good. Our server brought me the sides, beans, slaw, and potatoe salad. Then, the animal farm arrived. The beef ribs were on point with the BBQ sauce, adding an extra something to it. The turkey was dry, and brisket had enough fat to have flavor. OHHH my, did I need a crane to get out? Yet, I felt a pain in my chest, not because of all the animal flesh I ate, or because I got fatter, it was the bill. I used to like it here. Food was great and place was usually busy. We went today, the food was honestly just blah.... And I love bbq but it was cold when it was served, they had ran out of bread, and overall the service lacked big time. All the waiters / employees that passed our table looked either tired, annoyed or just simply not happy to be working. We had at least 6 different staff including bus boy and I believe a manager pass our table constantly. We were a table of 11, you'd think that at least one of them would assume one of us would be either needing a refill or something but nope. People would just pass us looking the other way, tired and ready to go home.... For paying $350+ including gratuity of course because we were a large table I would seriously expect great service, even if your food isn't great anymore. Are usually get the five meet special, but today chose to get myself a three meat special and an extra beef rib add-on. Although they put barbecue sauce on the rib truth be told it doesn't need any sauce whatsoever. The brisket was to die for. You can get the extra lean, or the not so extra lean, but either way you're a winner, it melts in your mouth and needs no barbecue sauce whatsoever. The sausage link was the best followed by the shredded beef. The beef brisket was flavorless and fatty, the pulled pork was lacking as well. Coleslaw was ok but didn't seem fresh. The homemade peach cobbler was nothing special and was very small for the price. My total came to $36 which I thought was very overpriced. We held my husband's birthday celebration recently at State Line and couldn't be more pleased. Not only was the food fantastic - as expected - but the service and help with all the arrangements and details went beyond. We ordered the "Cadillac" for our 37 guests and people loved it. We were also able to play a photo montage video on their TV which added something very special. We had a great server - Maria - and Bobbi arranged everything even coming in early so I could decorate the room. All made this a very very special celebration. As for the drinks I had sweet tea which you can refill for free but the cup itself was huge so I didn't bother to ask for a refill. The desserts were great. Not your average potato salad. Very good though. Chicken quarter. Tender and juicy but cooked through. I have tried to find this balance and it's hard. At least for me. Great flavor. This goes for the turkey too. The facilities and ambiance were perfect. Authentic and enjoyable even in a packed house. The bad: Beef ribs. I was super excited about the ribs. I still have dreams about barbecue ribs from my childhood in Dallas. But these were so dried out and tough you couldn't eat them. In desperation to relive my childhood memories I sucked some of the flavor off and could tell that my memories were accurate but as I said the meet was inedible. This place has always been special to my family and I. Yesterday we decided to celebrate a special event here at state line. Jake was our server and I have to say he made our experience so welcoming and warm. On the other hand the "manager" Kevin should receive a demotion or more training on what a manager should be. I never once noticed him buss a table or come over to ask how everything was or even offer to refill drinks although we had a server, he was completely flooded with our 15 top and another. I'm glad kevin was able to just dictate and not move a finger to help his employees out. This shows lack of leading by example or being a team player.
