This place used to be my go to place for beef ribs but the service has been horrible lately. Long wait times just to take the orders and for the food to arrive. Waiting over 30 minutes for the waiter to take our orders. The all you eat beef ribs is not worth it anymore because they seem to take on purpose long for you to not ask for refills. The first thing you should know about State Line is: You will wait. And wait. And wait. Don't think you're going to State Line and you'll be home in an hour or so... carve out two hours (or so) from your life. Or you know, call ahead and make a reservation/put your name on the waiting list. We don't have many serious BBQ joints in EP and honestly SL is top of the line. Oh and in case you were wondering why it's called "State Line", it's because it literally sits on the state line of Texas and New Mexico. Kinda cool, eh? Old timey memorabilia is all over. Yeah, okay... there's some new stuff too. It definitely makes the wait for a table a little easier when there's so much around that is vying for your attention. Everything about SL feels like old school restaurant hospitality. You know, where everyone is nice, but they aren't going to take any of your shit. Good stuff. The waiting area is next to the bar in the front, you just hook a left. The last few times I've been my party (regardless of size) has waited around 30ish minutes. The good news is a waiter always comes and checks on the people waiting so you can always order a drink or two in the meantime. The dining area is busy. No matter where you sit. But a good kind of busy. All of the servers are weaving in and out of tables while carrying huge trays of food. The place is always a little loud, but never so loud that you can't have a convo. Ahhh... the food. I like a good BBQ sauce and SL has a good one. All the usual suspects are on the menu. Everything is good (not great, but good). My personal favorites are the pork kebabs, the bbq sausage, and the brisket. You also get some complimentary bread that is made in house. Pretty yummy. You can purchase additional loafs and sometimes it's really hard not to. There's only one thing I've tried that I just wasn't a fan of and that's the bread pudding. Now, I know bread pudding has raisins... but when I ordered theirs, it was just a whole lot of nope for me. Too many raisins. I ended up picking out about half and then I found it pretty tasty. That may just be a raisin preference thing though so don't let that scare you from trying. If nothing else, just load up on their bread because it's damn good. read more

OK, I have to admit, I may be a little biased in how much I love this place! I grew up in Texas, but for the last two years, I have lived in Arizona. Love Arizona, but they do NOT know how to make BBQ... Also, my Dad and I stopped here while he was helping me move. The second time I ate here was after applying for my marriage license and it was my fiancees first Texas BBQ. The servings are big, the sauce has a great flavor and kick, the meat is tender (you can tell it was cooked slow and low!), and the decorations are adorable! Tim and I both for the 3 meat platter. I got the turkey, brisket, and pulled pork. He got chicken instead of turkey, he trusts my recommendations on BBQ (smart man). The plates came with beans, potato salad, and cole slaw. Yum. Yum. Yum. Yum. I ate almost everything (I'm not a big person) and I ate to the point I was in pain I was so full. But it was worth it! And then we had dessert.... Tim isn't a Texas and so he doesn't get our obsession with Blue Bell icecream. And when I say it on the dessert menu, I told him we have to get some. We ordered the peach cobbler with vanilla icecream. And it was worth stuffing myself even more! You could tell it was fresh and it was warm and gooey and delicious. Lots of peaches and not too much cinnamon. The bread is wheat and tastes fresh made. And they have honey butter packs on the table. Not only was the food awesome, the service was good. This was my first time here. Upon arriving the area to enter the restaurant is very homey and welcoming with a fountain and deck. There was a stage too so they probably have some bands play every now and then. We entered restaurant and automatically greeted and seated. Inside the restaurant it had a vintage feel. Very cool ambience. For starters we ordered the sautéed mushrooms and a half order of homemade white bread. I wasn't a fan of the mushrooms personally but thats because I'm not a big mushroom fan. I only like mushrooms breaded or inside my meal. These were whole mushrooms sautéed in a buttery type sauce. I didn't get a pic but my husband thought they were ok. The bread you guys was aaaamaaazing. It was warm and sooo soft and the honey spread went so well on it. We ordered the white bread but there's wheat too. I ordered the 2 meat platter marbled brisket and turkey. The husband order the baby back ribs. The platters come with potato salad and beans and coleslaw with a side of BBQ sauce. Let's start with the beans, they were not bad but not great. They were ok. I poured some BBQ sauce on them and they had better flavor. My husband wasn't a fan of the beans but honestly they tasted better with bbq sauce on them. The potato salad was so good! It had a tang to it, maybe dill or vinegar? My husband devoured it. They sprinkle a good amount of what looked like paprika on them. Very delicious. I would've loved if the potatoes were a little more soft but thats my preference. The coleslaw was not a tangy or sweet type that I'm used to. It was more of a creamy, possibly mayo? It was ok. Now on to the meats!! (Most important part) My marbled brisket was tender and flavorful and with the bbq sauce it was even better. Just left there for the hubby's bday dinner. The host ( young lady with glasses), server Andrew, Bartender Jocelyn, the staff in general were all very nice. Andrew is a great server. Now onto the food, my ribs were dry. I had to drink my coke to attempt to water it enough to swallow. Potato salad was awful! Coleslaw had no taste! Beans were juiceless ( DRY) n I didn't even attempt a taste. I noticed people were carry out boxes of food.Not because it was good but to see if their pet or someone else's pet would eat it. We ordered a 3 meat Combo Platter. Brisket(delicious!), sausage(good), and substituted pork ribs for an additional charge(2.99). There is NO EXCUSE for a BBQ place to have tough ribs! They were less than mediocre. I would not order the pork ribs again. It also was accompanied by coleslaw, potato salad, and beans. The beans are blah and dry. I usually love beans with BBQ, not here; just to bland and dry. Coleslaw and potato salad are okay, nothing special. Food came out "lightning fast," so I'm assuming it's all precooked in warmers, which to me is no better than cafeteria style. I have to say, we were a bit disappointed. Used to be the best in the 915. Now the sauce is bland and diluted and the great smoke flavor has gone away. The service as always is friendly and attentive and the BREAD is still outrageous!!! 3 stars... When in El Paso I try to get to this joint for the marbled brisket. With my bride so we opted for the 3 meat platter to share. Brisket was the highlight but we also had the pork ribs(not worth the up charge) and the hot link sausage. If I had to do it over I would have stuck to a large portion of the brisket...tender and smoky pigness!! Prices are in line with expectation and ambiance is buckaroo bario. Although it took some time to be seated (about 35-40 minutes), the service and food were much better than the last time we were here. I'm updating this review from 2 stars to 4. It was a Friday night so I get why it took awhile to be seated. Also, we were with my boyfriend's family so there was six of us. They placed us in the back of the restaurant which was much better than being in the front or middle of it. It wasn't as loud or crowded. Unfortunately, I didn't catch our waitress' name but she was good. She checked on us on more than one occasion. She also checked to see if we needed drink refills on more than one occasion. One thing I didn't like is that she automatically made 18 percent in tips from us. She just went ahead and charged it to our bill! If she hadn't have done a good job, I would've said something. She made a $15 tip from us! The check was split up so she made even more that that. I don't like that they just take a tip automatically. A tip should be earned, not expected. This may be automatic since we were a table of 6. However, I think they did this the last time when it was only 2 of us. All of the food tasted fresh, including the bread and sides (potato salad, beans, coleslaw). This time I only got turkey. It tasted good by itself or with the barbecue sauce. We ordered mushrooms as an appetizer. They were really tasty! I tasted wine and butter in them. I have to say this restaurant has become a hit or miss. No smoke ring on the brisket and the beef rib was fair but definitely not fall off the bone done. Better barbecue at Rudy's country store versus spending your money at this place. Got the two meat combo and the coleslaw was the best part of the meal. Home style bread should not be charged for since it was lacking flavor with a hard crust that tasted like flour. Each platter should come with complimentary bread, which we were being told by the bar tender that took our order was not the case, since we ordered a full loaf of wheat bread. When we arrived we saw a sign stating their grill was down, which on Mother's Day seems to be a problem anybody could figure out a solution for, but they just said, grill broken order something else. Very disappointed with this place. I even actively lowered my expectations so I wouldn't be disappointed. We had the 5 meat and paid for homemade bread. All the meat was clearly not made that day. The brisket was more like boiled meat than smoked. It was thin tiny strips as wide as my finger. The pork and beef ribs tasted like leftovers from the fridge. I feel cheated. Avoid, avoid, avoid. I came here with a large party on the recommendation of a local and was incredibly disappointed. Most of us had excitedly ordered the beef rib slabs only to find them dry, tough and completely inedible. Although they may be "unique" as non-pork ribs, they simply completely missed the defining characteristic of ribs - succulent, fall off the bone meat. The (very little!) meat they did have also lacked any contrast in texture (where is the crispy, smoky exterior that many restaurants easily serve up???) In addition to the disappointing food, our actual experience was terrible. It was a lot of small things that ended up really ruining it. For example, to even get water or menus, we had to return to the front twice asking for service (after waiting patiently for 15 mins after seating). Bread didn't come w butter - my friend had to go up to the front to get it. Two of our group's actual orders never even showed up. (We explained "what was missing" and still never got them.) After all this, I talked to the manager - I never do that usually but really felt I needed to express my disappointment. Although he was cordial, he only offered excuses and I doubt the feedback will really make a difference in service. Don't waste your time or your money supporting a place like this. read more

Easy 5 stars. Awesome BBQ and food. Unique atmosphere and extremely friendly staff. We did the all you can eat just to get a taste of everything. Was worried they would charge my kids for the all you can eat as well and they don't eat much but the manager worked out an arrangement with us so we wouldn't be overspending. The atmosphere is really rustic and cool. They have a huge patio with shade and music. Very impressed and pleased. Will be back for the ribs! The home made bread is a must. read more

We were in the area for work and was told that this was a popular place to eat. The State Line is a BBQ joint that straddles the border of Texas and New Mexico. I'm told that even though it has an El Paso address, when you walk inside, it's technically in New Mexico. In Texas, you cannot purchase alcohol on Sundays so this restaurant is interesting because when you walk inside, you can purchase alcohol. In fact, they have an entire section of handles of anything you can imagine for those Texans looking to make a purchase on a Sunday or other days of the week. Apparently that section is open pretty much every day of the week. Ok, so back to the food. After you get seated, you're given a fairly extensive menu. They had a section on the menu for regular sized portions (meaning big portions) and one for people who wanted smaller plates. I went with the 3 meat combo which I think was perfect. They have a list of different things you can choose from but I went ahead and chose their homemade sausage, beef rib (just 1) and medium fatty brisket. It also comes with beans, cole slaw and potato salad. The sausage was absolutely delicious and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The beef ribs are huge but remember that the bone is big too. I probably retrospectively should have gotten the pork ribs instead. The medium fatty brisket was awesome as well. Be sure to get that. On the plate, you also get a small amount of their house BBQ sauce which was flavorful, tangy, salty, sweet and just a hint of spice. Very nice but not necessarily the best I have had. It hit the spot though! The other thing to note is that their bread is very popular. They are best known for their homemade bread which comes as an entire loaf. They bread is sweet, soft and warm. On the table you should use their honey butter. Unbelievable! You can also get their free bread which was delicious as well but smaller and not quite the same. Plenty of parking. You get your food almost within 5 minutes of ordering it. The service was great and this place was fairly inexpensive. Love it. Would come back again if given the chance! read more

I love this place!!!! Tonight something was off...Our party of 3 ordered 3 appetizers, the 1/2 and 1/2 loaf, mushrooms and the queso dip with added brisket...the white bread was stale so our amazing waiter, Allen, switched it out! All appetizers were delicious and the Margaritas were good too! Next up, my husband ordered the ribeye and my friend ordered the 3-meat combo and I had the 6oz Grilled Salmon with all the fixings of course! The baked potatoes were made to order and a good size! I was sooo disappointed with the potato salad, it's my favorite, the potatoes were very hard and not creamy and smooth...ugh!!!! My husband's ribeye was okay...he was disappointed since of course we were at the State Line famous for their cuts!!!! Other than that, our rating will be 3 stars...don't know if the quality of the food has gone down due to the Covid-19 situation -I hope the State Line recovers to it's prior glory...our waiter Allen was awesome, his words "I gotcha" were true to his service! Perfect. Staff accommodated us in the patio, so we could have our dog. The food was excellent. Ordered the fresh bread loaf. Huge pieces with Honey butter and regular butter to choose from. 2 meat platter, dinner size, was the correct amount satisfy our hunger and craving for BBQ without stuffing ourselves. This restaurant is usually pretty good but last night when we had dinner, it was terrible. My husband ordered the ribs and they were tough as leather. Our friend also ordered the ribs and his weren't cooked well. The poor waiter did take them back and replaced them with tough ones. I had the brisket which was super dry, plus my martini had a small fly in it. I was sick almost immediately and was sick all night. My husband and our friends also got queazy tummies.
