Theater was clean and well kept. The theater space itself isn't huge but sound for our kids' show was just fine, and seats didn't feel crowded nor did the kids seem to have visibility issues in adult chairs even when adults were seated in front of them. Staff were organized and friendly. I had my purse searched upon entry; all bags were looked at. My ticket was purchased through Vivid Seats, and apparently they didn't provide me a legit theater-issued QR so I had to visit the box office. They were friendly and promptly issued me printed tickets. Lobby was a con because it's just small and cramped. This old building probably didn't have to house as much food and merch purchasing back in its day but the multiple concession lines were blocking people from just getting to the theater and accessing their seats. They have tons of low quality junk food for sale. The huge group sitting next to us had chicken fingers, fries, a ketchup smell that wouldn't go away... it was honestly ridiculous the food they allow in people's laps just to turn profits. I was surprised these people were buying full huge meals (that had to cost $40+ each for junk) at 3:30pm to hold it in their laps for a 1.75h kids' show. Whatever. Point is, if you haven't eaten and want to pay $40 for crap that will linger in your body, you will not go hungry here. Clean bathrooms were the right size to allow a packed house to process themselves in the 20min intermission timeframe. This includes the ladies room, which always takes longer, and it was for a kids' show, which adds even more time. I recommend pairing your visit with the Rutgers Zimmerli Art Museum if you have time. They are open until 6pm most nights. read more

Great night at THE State Theatre! I won tickets for a Ladies Night concert with Raheem DeVaughn and Eric Benét, orchestra level, row P, seats 109/110. Perfect view of the stage, but I don't think it really matters much where you are seated due to the design of the auditorium. The opener was a rising singer/songwriter named Aniyyah, born and raised in New Jersey. Aniyyah's DJ had some technical issues loading her music at the start of her set, but wow, she has a voice on her. She, along with Raheem DeVaughn and Eric made for a fantastic show. They are all extremely talented vocalists, but Raheem DeVaughn without a doubt stole the show with his stage presence. Eric Benét however truly surprised me. His voice is absolutely incredible live. The State Theatre did a major renovation back in 2020 and the interior was previously renovated in 2004. It's as if we have a piece of Broadway right in the middle of New Brunswick, New Jersey. I felt like I stepped right into the 1920s with their vintage design and architecture. The acoustics inside the theatre are phenomenal. I'm not sure if it was my seating, but the sound was so crisp and well balanced. I can understand why any artist would choose this theatre as their preferred venue to perform in. One important note is their designated passageway to the closest parking deck which would otherwise be a long walk in the freezing cold. We were able to use the enclosed heated hallway as a shortcut which leads directly from the garage to the State Theatre located on Livingston Ave. We almost walked right past the entrance to the passageway, so I wanted to make sure I shared it with anyone who has read this far into my review : ) It's been many years since I've come to see a show here, and I had an enjoyable experience. My husband and I are frequent Broadway goers and came here to see Tina Turner since we didn't get a chance to see it when it was running in NYC. Let me just say I was not disappointed. I would totally go back here for another play. First off: the tickets were at the fraction of the price, as were the drinks and concessions which I loved. The seats were super comfortable in comparison to Broadway seating. The entire place, bathroom, lobby, auditorium were all very well kept and clean. Tima Turner play was absolutely fantastic! I would totally see that again. My only complaint is having only one booth for merch. The theater was almost sold out and the line was ridiculous to purchase. I also didn't like that one of the workers was rushing everyone to their seat when purchasing drinks and the show started 15 min after, therefore for the first half we had nothing to drink. read more

I saw Clue: A New Comedy at the State Theatre of New Jersey this weekend. The play is part of the 2023-2024 Broadway Series. It was a great show - all talented actors and creative set design. I would recommend supporting live entertainment and seeing a theatrical production here. I was seated in row J and I had a good view of the stage. The seats are much more comfortable than other theaters or music halls that I've visited. I've been here before for a concert, but this was my first time here for a play. I hope to return soon. Tip: Park at the nearby Morris Deck (70 New Street) if you're coming here on the weekend. Street parking may be slim. Rates are fair; I paid $6 for 2 hours. read more

I recently went there with 2 of my friends (all women) we had balcony seats. They now have non- gender bathrooms upstairs. When my friends and I went to use the bathroom we were SHOCKED AND APPAULED that there were both men and women in the same bathroom. Needless to say we didn't use it and left. So my advice if this offends you like me get seating downstairs or don't go. I'm choosing as my friends we will never return. First off..let me say I'd give this venue 0 stars if I could but I am forced to give it a star to leave a review.I paid a total of $165.25 for a front row seat to see the band 38 Special on October 16,2025. I'm a senior citizen who also has disabilities & vision problems & the unacceptable lack of security at this venue ruined my entire night.When 38 Special came onto the stage,everyone was sitting.The first issue that made no sense was a woman who had a front row seat also right in the center stood up to dance.She was then told by security to sit down.That should NEVER have happened, she should have been allowed to stand & dance right in front of the seat she paid for,but that is minor compared to what happened midway through the show.About midway through the show these same security guards that were sitting right in front of the stage allowed every single person that wanted to, they allowed them all to rush to the front of the stage no matter where they were sitting.People were actually coming down from the balcony & from way in the back & ended up in front of me & others who had front row seats.They were not told to go back to their seats, they were not told to back up at all & they were allowed to take over the entire front of the stage in front of us.They did NOT pay to be in the front,,I did pay to be there and yet they allowed these people to come all the way down & stay in front of the stage the rest of the night.This Theatres security team did absolutely NOTHING, they just sat there on their butts and didnt move.We had a younger security guy in front of our part of the stage and the entire night he just sat there as the crowd rushed down from the back to the front,I had people all pushing me & in front of me & nothing was done about it.EVEN AFTER TELLING THIS SECURITY TO DO SOMETHING HE JUST SHRUGGED AND DID NOTHING !!!What am I paying for a front row seat for if I could have just paid for a much cheaper seat and ended up in the front anyways by just rushing the stage with the rest of them??? Then when the show ended I had some crazy guy pushing me so he could try to get a pick and the set list from the band as they went down the line thanking the crowd.This theatre allowed people to cut in front of us in the front row and stand there and their security just sat on their asses and did NOTHING.And the insane part of the whole thing is like I told you, they actually did tell that poor woman earlier who did belong in the front row to sit down when she tried to dance, yet they did NOTHING when the whole mob rushed to the front from their back seats.Is this theatres security just scared or intimidated by all the people that came down so they just did NOTHING? If so then why are they working there for? This was the first time ever I had been to this venue & the experience was awful.Never again..Ive been to hundreds of concerts and never saw such lack of security where they just allowed others to take over our seats & places in the front row.Its unacceptable !!! Whats even worse is the response I got from the theatre.They took NO responsibility and actually blamed the bad themselves for causing this .What a joke !!! This is what they wrote back to me......."For many of our rock-show encores, we permit patrons to move forward temporarily, as this is a frequent request from the bands.Regarding the patron who was asked to sit while dancing, this appears to have been an error by a new security team member unfamiliar with the situation"... So they blamed the band and then said they had some new security guard who had no clue how to do his job.They also refused to give me a refund or even a partial refund for this nightmare and didnt even offer a complimentary ticket for the future for a concert.You would think at the very LEAST they would have offered that, but they didnt.They held their ground & basically said to me too bad, theres nothing we can or will do about this..Admitting their security guy didnt know how to do his job properly & committed an error should be enough right there to at least offer me a future ticket.It only would have been right but they didnt even do that.This was completely unfair to me & to all the others who paid big money for front row seats,especially with the amount of money I paid to be in the front row.The whole point of getting a front row seat is to have nobody in front of us, not a bunch of people who paid a minimum amount for their seats to be allowed to just come down and go right in front of me and others like that.And this theatres response to the issue and no solution or resolution even compounds on top of what happened that night and makes it even worse..Its unacceptable !! I am pleading with you people, do NOT go to this theatre. I recently came to the State Theatre to watch the tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. Tickets were a little expensive, considering it's a smaller regional theater. We were in the mezzanine, Row G, first 3 seats from the aisle. The seats aren't super pitched, meaning if you're a little short like me, you're going to have some trouble seeing over the person in front of you. Staff were all pleasant and nice, but it was definitely distracting that they kept seating people who were 30 minutes and 45 minutes late. The show is only 90 minutes long, so like, these people had literally missed half the show already. Tons of audience members talking in full volume and also singing along and ushers did nothing. It's a bit far from Jersey City, so I don't think I'll be running to come back to see a show. read more

I hand the barkeep my card and then hand her a twenty so I can leave a tip. She hands me two tens. Looks at me. There's a silent standoff. So I smile, buckle to her little strong arm routine and I generously toss a ten into her swindler pot. I get home and check my bank account (I do this constantly and you'd be shocked what you'd find). $32 - THIRTY TWO DOLLARS FOR A DOUBLE WATERED DOWN SWILL AND A MICRO BAG OF COOKIES?!? When I saw watered down, what was an alcohol beverage tasted like ginger ale. So even if McCartney brings Johnny and Georgie back and they play the State Theater some cryogenic day, you won't find me there. Shame. Everything else was pretty good - except for the couple that were seated halfway through the show in back of me that smelled so bad my eyes watered - like they'd been dipped in pine poison and human waste. It is a sad day in America when a gay couple cannot enjoy an evening at the theater. My husband and I, who are white (and yes, there is a reason I am identifying the races of those involved here) were enjoying the production of "Dear Evan Hansen" at State Theatre New Jersey (STNJ) in New Brunswick, NJ on Saturday evening. Next to us was a straight white married couple, and next to them, a young man of color. During intermission, a white female usher came to our section and began to chastise the young black man for allegedly using his phone during the performance. It did not appear that anyone around the young black man was questioned about this. Rather, it appeared that the claim of a single individual seated somewhere in the vicinity of the young black man automatically made him guilty. Mind you, several white patrons in front of us used their phones during the performance. None of them were spoken to about their behavior during the show. The man of the white couple next to us spoke up for the young black man, indicating he was seated next to him during the entire first half of the performance, and at no time was the young black man on his phone. The white man then told the young black man to switch seats with him, so that the young black man was now sitting between the wife and husband. Mind you, this white married couple did not know this young black man at all before this performance. The white married man said he did this so that this young black man would stop being harassed. After the woman who made the complaint said something, the white married man honestly replied "because I think you are racist." I leaned over to the white married woman next to me and asked "Is that your husband?" She replied "Yes," to which I replied "He is my new hero." The white married woman reached over the young black man, tapped her husband on the leg, got his attention, pointed at me, and I said "Thank you." Martin Luther King, Jr. wisely stated "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." As a gay man, I have faced injustice many times. Rarely does anyone witnessing it stand up for you. I was very proud to see the actions of the white married patrons next to me during this incident. This also, however, now made my husband and I part of the incident. The usher now had a member of the state theatre security, a white man, join her. It is at this time we were all, my husband and myself, the white married couple next to me, and the young black man, threatened with expulsion from the theater if any further incidents were to occur. The woman next to the white man started yelling "I'm being attacked! I'm being attacked!" Again, the security took her word at face value, and began to attempt to remove the white married couple from the theater. Meanwhile, the woman asked those around us if any of them could validate her claim of being attack. None could, and in fact, several patrons indicated there was absolutely no attack occurring. My husband then spoke up, asking "Could we just all handle this like adults?" The white female usher was extremely discourteous and replied "I am not speaking to you." and the white security member then began to speak. I will admit, my husband did call the gentleman "a meathead," but the security members response was to say he was going to press charges against my husband and have us removed from the theater. He summoned the police, who escorted my husband and I out of the theater. On the way out, I said to the security member, "So now, you are not only a racist, but anti-gay as well" to which his response was "Blow me!" You might ask how he would know we were gay. During this altercation, my hand was on my husband's leg, and when the officer told us to leave, I stood up, put my hand on my husband's shoulder, and said "Hon, let's go." When I claimed security staff was discriminatory and using hate speech, he denied it, saying he was just saying the statement out loud to everyone and not to anyone in particular. Under that rationale, I guess STNJ would find it acceptable for me to yell out the "n" word in their theater, as long as it was not directed at any one particular person and was equally applied to all who were in earshot. All of this occurred because a young black man was accused of doing something wrong that he did not do, and those around him were making an attempt to rectify an injustice occurring right before them. We have been patrons of STNJ for years, seeing many shows, despite the over two hour drive from our home. We have made an event out of each trip, dining at local restaurants around the theater, and staying in hotels around New Brunswick. While STNJ may have an issue with people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, I have a problem with bigoted organizations. While I tried to speak with my words, I will now speak with my wallet. I will no longer be a patron of STNJ, affecting not only their revenue, but the revenue of local businesses in the area as well. read more

Not a bad theater, certainly nicer than the Keswick Theater in Glenside Pennsylvania, but I had a bad experience with the staff when I came here to see a show. I took a ride on the elevator, and when I attempted to take a video of it, they told me I couldn't without permission. They asked me why I was filming, and I explained to them my hobby of recording video of elevators for my YouTube channel, @ih8kone. They found my hobby interesting and asked me what being an elevator enthusiast was all about, and they found my knowledge quite impressive. I was not forced to delete me footage (which, under PENALTY OF THE LAW, the staff ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO), nor was I ejected from the facility, nor was I detained (which is also NOT ALLOWED under the First Amendment) Still, they weren't the nicest and could have been friendlier. I mean, what kind of world do we live in where First Amendment Rights don't mean anything anymore? It's just plain ridiculous. Photography is not a crime, nor does it have anything to do with terrorism or 9/11. Maybe I will come and see another show here when they learn to be more friendly and welcoming to people like me. read more

I had a very bad experience here. The large screen monitors were turned inward and were not facing the crowd. This was for a magic show with sleight-of-hand tricks. I missed half the show. I mean no one on the balcony could see the monitors. This was almost 200 bucks down the drain. I have never seen such a poorly designed setup before. Truly strange. When I complained to customer service I got a perfunctory answer. The seats were uncomfortable. It took 20 minutes to exit the theater because they didn't allow us to use all the staircases. My family and I watched Shen Yun at this theatre. It is an average size theatre. I believe it has a second floor we were at the first floor all the way in the back. We could still see the performance even from far away. The effects from the program was super cool. Everyone was wearing a mask and had to be vaccinated. It was a great show. Photography/ Video were not allowed. I just wished they were well organized as to entering the theatre. Everyone was so confused as to which line to go to. Great theatre to see a concert or show. The seats are comfortable and the sound is excellent. Parking in the area is fairly simple, there are several parking lots in the area and you can certainly get lucky with neighborhood street parking. Tickets are generally very reasonable for the location. The staff is super friendly. One thing that annoyed me on my latest visit is they scan your tickets but make you wait in the lobby before they open the doors to the theatre, the lobby crowds quickly and folks are one on top of the other. There is a small bar and snack bar with food and beverages available. read more

Cute theatre with nice old-fashioned architecture. There is a nice big chandelier in the middle. Its gift shop was sub par and just had random stuff you'd expect to see from a Hallmark store instead of anything targeted to theatre or the show specifically. The seats are decent for a theatre. There is a parking garage nearby that is fine on rates. Surprisingly, the theatre offers a $13 parking voucher but I paid less just for the amount of hours parked in the garage (where I showed up early to get dinner). The downside is everyone parks here and if you go to a show aimed at an older generation, note that it's slow getting out. There are a bunch of restaurants nearby but a lot don't seem to open until 5 p.m. which depending on showtime might be cutting it close. But it's a cute area and because I was on their email list, I bought tickets for another show in a couple of months. So it's a nice little venue. read more

I took my boyfriend to see 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in Concert with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra'. Our seats were located near the back in the Right Rear Balcony, Row W, Seats 4, 2. Since the seats were separated from the rest of the row, we were able to geek out privately without disturbing anybody around us. We also lucked out on the generous leg room and not having to deal with people needing to pass by us to get to their seats. At first, I was worried about the seats being too far but for this type of show, it was perfect. The movie screen was more than visible and you're able to get a glimpse of the orchestra performing. I could only see the front half of the orchestra while sitting since the screen cut off the rest. The performance was remarkable (c'mon its the NJ Symphony Orchestra) and the sound felt balanced throughout the theatre. It wasn't as loud as I would've wanted for a live concert, but purely due to the fact that we were near the rear of the theatre. Definitely worth it and the theatre does a great job of making the show visible for the further seats. Excited to see more shows here! read more

This theatre is old but nice. All of the seats are good unless you have a small child with you. We sat in the lower balcony section-row A-seats 106 & 107. It was very difficult for my 5 year old to see the stage. I do NOT suggest buying seats in this row if you're taking a child to a show. I recommend sitting in rows B and up. The seats were comfy so that was a plus!! The lobby on the mezzanine level is huge! They have a stand to purchase a limited amount of snacks and drinks but no souvenirs. The souvenirs are sold in the main lobby only. At least that was the set up for the Sesame Street show. The bathrooms on the mezzanine level reeked of urine. Most of the stalls were dirty and there was toilet paper all over the floor! It was so bad that my son refused to use the bathroom! We could not find street parking, so we parked at the Morris Deck on New St. We paid $8 for 2.5 hours which was not bad at all. Went to see ancient aliens last night. The theater itself was very beautiful and nice, but I must say the seats are absolutely terrible in the balcony section I sat in. They are too small for an average person I understand the theater is over 100 years old. However, however the prices they're charging for tickets I think they can renovate the seats..... read more
