I saw this place had a burger special on Monday's. It was $5 so I didn't expect much. I don't cuss very often but when I saw the size of this burger coming towards me I literally said $#it out loud. The waitress laughed and said "I hope you're hungry." The burger is two large patties with all the fixens. The burger was fantastic and cooked perfectly. The home made chips made a great side. I'd say this better than anything at Bad Daddy's and even rivals Chucks. For $5 you can't beat this deal. After almost a year since my 1st visit I'm still digging The Station. Yes it has one of the best patios in town, with an outdoor bar and a fireplace when it's chilly you just can't go wrong here. I stopped in with a large crowd last Saturday. The Station is not only great for crowds but it welcomes families as well. Our waitress was fantastic I hate that I don't remember her name because she definitely deserves a shout out. She was so accommodating to us, helping us move tables around so we had enough space! Plus she was on top of our orders and drinks our whole visit. The food here has definitely improved since my first visit. I desperately wanted to order one of those juicy burgers that everyone had because they looked so good, but I was trying to stick with a healthy option and ordered the black bean burger in a pita with a salad. They make a darn good black bean burger and for just a house salad it was fresh and delicious. The pink peppercorn vinaigrette dressing was unique and so good. They seem to have specials everyday and now have brunch too! I snagged a few jumbo wedged french fries from my sisters plate which completed my already tasty meal. Tucked in a block North of Krispy Kreme, this cozy spot has an atmosphere that really makes you feel at home and is a perfect addition to my neighborhood. The pickled vegetables illuminated by lights is something I have never seen before and really makes this place unique. There is an incredible amount of outside seating and the fireplaces and heaters make the cold weather tolerable. Everyone I've spoken to have loved the food (a friend I was with had the chicken pot pie which was very impressive -- it actually comes in a pot with a handle right off the stove, and he didn't leave a crumb behind). Good selection of beer (local brews, domestics, and imports), with cocktails coming soon. The staff are all wonderfully attentive for how busy it has been since it has just opened (if you want less of a hassle, check it out during a weekday where seating is easier to acquire). If you're not a member of the anorexic community that is criminally underserved in most restaurant reviews, VISIT! I live a mile from this place so my husband I have been up here a few times for dinner and like the vibe. On Friday we walked here with our dog (they are always super friendly to pets) and had a few drinks at the bar and some really good (and only $5) hummus! On Saturday some friends asked us to meet there and we had the dip sampler. I was not a huge fan of this but my hubby seemed to like it. I've been meaning to review this spot for a while, and today's stop for a late lunch just put me right over the edge: review time! I'm a huge sucker for the ambiance here - the patio is a fantastic spot to soak up some sunshine (or bask under the Edison lights) and, on colder days and nights, warm yourself under heaters or by the fire. The staff has always been jovial and friendly, and our server this time was no exception. Ryan was attentive and friendly, *and* made an excellent recommendation when he told us about their award-winning Bahn Mi. Their take on this Korean sandwich was ridiculously delectable and deserving of its accolades - I'm not much of a pork girl, but after one bite, I was more than a little jealous of Jeff's lunch :) After a rather unhealthy dinner last night of cookie dough bites and Baked Lays, I decided a salad was in order. My beet and goat cheese salad was delicious *and* beautifully presented, with the beets folded into a rose in the middle of the plate. Not exactly what you might expect from the corner bar playing the big game on their televisions, but such a pleasant surprise. I went to the Station because I've heard good things about their bar food here. I really liked their out door seating, which was very plentiful and had two fire places and an outdoor bar as well. We sat inside and were greeted and served right away. I ordered one of the specials of the night: the shredded BBQ beef sandwich with coleslaw and side of potato wedges. It was basically like a typical NC BBQ sandwich, but with beef instead of pork and a sweet BBQ sauce of instead of a vinegar based sauce. The beef was tender, easy to pull part and chew, and had some juice in it. The sauce was a little underwhelming; I could taste it too much and wish it was a little more prevalent. The coleslaw was fresh and crunchy, and the wedges were really good. They were big and seasoned really well, way better than eating regular fries. I also had a few bites of the pork belly banh mi, which is full of awesome flavors. It comes with two huge slices of pork belly and some fresh pickled vegetables. However, the sandwich was very greasy and fatty, which some people might not like. The station has a great bar atmosphere with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The bar food is decent and better quality than your typical bar. Overall, I thought it was nice place to get dinner, and I'll be back for the bar scene late at night. read more

And what is ironic is I can tell from their menu they are priding themselves on serving really atypical bar cuisine. The truth is, it's far from that. The Station has a great outdoor space, but unfortunately despite the heaters and the fireplaces it was too cold to sit outside, so we opted for the indoor brunch that starts at 11am on Sundays. There are only a few brunch items and they all look good, but I decided to go with my all time favorite corned beef. Although beautifully served in a cast iron skillet alongside a toasted biscuit and jam, I was disappointed with the taste. The beef itself was extremely salty, tough and hard to chew, the potatoes underdone. Even the cheddar on top could not help the taste, and in fact, was unnecessary (I never thought I'd say cheese was unnecessary, but the overly salty beef was overwhelming and didn't need more help). The over easy eggs, I must say, were prepared perfectly and almost saved the dish. My boyfriend's biscuit and sausage gravy were tasty, just savory and sweet enough. I liked the cheesy grits as well, and the toasted biscuit was heavenly - warm and golden crunchy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside - perfection. We didn't stay long enough to try the Bloody Marys (amazingly good, I was told), but I'll be sure to try them next time. read more

I went to the station with Yelper Brittany F. on her recommendation, and just fell in love with the space! This place just screams "come on in" as soon as you see with with the beautiful fire pits, comfortable patio seating and big wrap around bar in the center of it all. We went during prime dinner hours on a Saturday night, so we weren't able to find a table right away. We grabbed a beer at the bar and waited until something opened up, which took maybe about 20 mins or so. We ended up with a table near the fire pit, ideal for this chilly Saturday evening. The service was excellent, even with the crowds they were super attentive, friendly and helpful. I will say, I didn't love my dinner, I ordered a vegetable salad, and what came was a beet salad. I wish they would have called it that on the menu, as it was very deceiving being that there were no other vegetables in the salad at all. But, I did have a bite of my husband's burger and fries and those were both AMAZING. So, I will chalk this up to a mistake on my part and order some real food next time. The Station is one of my favorite places for patio dining. They have a great open-air layout outside, complete with a bar in the middle with 2 TVs for the sports-watching crowd. Fire pits keep you warm during the colder months and an overhead, clear cover blocks out some of the brutal summer heat. The food is really good! The grind their own meat, so their burgers can be ordered medium-rare and always get rave reviews. I am a sucker for the Station Salad with quinoa, blueberries, and goat cheese (because goat cheese!). And their homemade chips and fries are always tasty. The downside to this place is often the wait for food and service, though I have never had bad service other than it being slow. Also, the inside is not nearly as atmospheric as the outside. This area of Raleigh is becoming more and more popular and is a fun place to visit in general. For the wine lovers, I would recommend pairing a trip to the Station for some simple food with a wine tasting at Wine Authorities nearby. If the weather is nice and you have time, take a stroll through the Oakwood neighborhood to check out some of the beautiful historic homes. read more

I was eager to check out Oakwood's newest neighborhood pub in mid-December of 2013. Overall, I left feeling underwhelmed. We took a table outside even though it was quite cold out, but sitting by the fireplace was super cozy. So I have to give the outdoor atmosphere a 5-star rating (and atmosphere is very important to me). Everything else gets a 3-star rating from me. The beer list left much to be desired. Raleigh is known for offering great local brews, but The Station was not on par with its competition in the beer arena. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about. I also don't think that our waitress liked coming outside in the cold ;) More than likely, I will indeed come back when the weather permits solely for the excellent outdoor space. So I have been here twice now. The first time was on their opening night and they couldn't make any of their specialty drinks because of not having the bitters to make them. I decided to give it another try as I thought the look an concept of the restaurant was great. I went back today and was not super impressed by it. I will start to say the food was great. The down side is we went in chose a table a waitress came and assured us that this table was open not 30 second went by when someone came up to us and said they were waiting on that table. The other waitress came up and said it was their table and we would have to move . Since the other open table was now taken we had to now wait for a table!we ordered some of their specialty drinks this time. They were good but not amazing. When we goy the check we were shocked at how expensive these drinks were! I don't mind paying for a good drink but these didn't have any special liqueurs in them just your basic stuff with some good bitters. They were each $13-$14 I won't say I will never go back there but I would just get food and a beer. read more

The good: Very friendly staff. Good draft selection. Excellent patio arrangement on the burgeoning Person st. corridor. Now for the not-so-good: Food was mediocre. Tried the sloppy joe, jalepeno pimento cheese and mac & cheese. The sloppy joe was incredibly dry and relatively flavorless. The included fries were wedge cut, well seasoned, and hot. The best part of the sloppy joe without question. Mac & cheese: again, incredibly dry. Served in mini cast iron skillet. Included a hint of cheese flavor, but other than the browning on the top, there was almost no visible cheese in the dish. Faint hint of cheese taste, but mostly pasta. Jalapeno pimento cheese more or less resembled nacho cheese. Wasn't what I was expecting as it came pre-melted. Good enough, and the best of what we'd ordered, but wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone. Needless to say, we let our server take a considerable portion of our food away when it came time for the check, which is a shame. I ventured here due to the hype about it's Bahn Mi sandwich. Lament it say, but it was below par by all standards. As someone who has traveled and eaten all over Vietnam, there wasn't a thing good about this. Even when considering the fusion attempt that this was going for, it fell short of being appetizing. I can only gather that it won the award because it's unique and a play on a very common and increasingly popular Vietnamese dish. I still give this place four stars because the other food was great, the drinks were local, and the layout was excellent. More than that, The Station is a key business that is helping expand and anchor the area. I would love to see this part of downtown boom, and The Station helps. read more

However, gave it 3 stars because it was a little pricey for the amount of food - I expected more than what was given based on the price. Could be because we went for lunch, though the menu and prices are the same no matter the time of day. I ordered the roasted vegetable salad and added portabello to it. Really good, but was a bit lacking on the portabello. My dad got a draft beer and the portabello caprese sandwich with the potato wedges. when it first arrived, the piece of portabello was so small it didn't even cover half the bun. He asked the waiter about it, and he immediately brought it back and returned with a sandwich plump with a few slices. The menu said it came with basil, as a classic caprese should, but instead there were just a few small pieces of arugula. that was disappointing, but overall it was tasty. We used to love this place. It's a prime spot and should be fantastic. At this point it needs a good power washing because it's overrun with flies, concrete stains, and bad smells. There are daily specials, but the menu is tired and needs a total redo after all these years. I hope the owners will read this and think about it. I love everyone who works there. UPDATE: My initial comment has been here promoting the Station for a long time now as the top review, but I'm going to have to update this. Again, I don't review things unless it's REALLY good or REALLY bad. Since the Station is right in my neighborhood I really want it to be good. In fact, the only reason I'm taking time to write this is because I live close and I want the Station to be a decent place to eat SOOO BAD! ----------- Unfortunately, while my first visit was exceptional, the rest of my visits have not been. Still one of the best outdoor scenes in Raleigh, the Station has really let their food and service slip to an almost unbearable point. We live so close that we keep trying and hoping these incidents are just blips on the radar, but it's becoming apparent that they are par for the course here. After numerous attempts we've gotten wrong orders, they've run out of menu items, the service has been spotty and the food is always 'meh' at best. But this morning was the last straw or us.... - Went this morning for brunch...The wife and I saying we'll give it one more try (it was 60 degrees and beautiful out)....and of course, we were burnt again. Sat down and ordered a simple salad and an appetizer. It took about 45 minutes to come out. No warning that the kitchen was backed up or anything. Right before we were about to just walk away, someone besides our waitress comes out to deliver our food...but its the wrong order. They just leave it and say "oh well, its on the house.' Problem is, that wasn't what we ordered or what we wanted. Then our waitress comes by and asks how we're liking the dish. We explain its the wrong order and says oops..our food will be right out. 10 minutes later it comes out and was exactly what we expected. Mediocre. We've tried and tried, and while we still might come to get a beer on a sunny afternoon in the spring...we most certainly are not going to go back to eat there until some major changes have been made. ------------------ (Initial Review:) I'm not one to waste my time reviewing a place unless it totally sucked, or it did something really awesome. In this case, the Station really went above and beyond. I live nearby and walked up with my wife, my parents and my grandparents who were in town for the holiday. The dining room is small so we had to wait.... The servers kept coming by assuring us they will seat us as soon as they can. They were very friendly and made sure we knew they were trying to help us. After about 30 mins of standing and waiting, someone finally got up and left. The manager or owner (not sure which) immediately came over thanked us for waiting, brought extra chairs over and apologized for the hassle. He then took our drink order. After waiting about 5 mins to receive our drinks, he came back with them. He apologized again and said "You should never have to wait 5 minutes for a beer. This round is on the house." Honestly, i didnt even notice it was taking long, but this guy made sure we were happy. The food was great, the fries are amazing and the place is overall pretty cool. I'll definitely be coming back a lot. I live so close and after this meal/service I'm hooked. I wish more restaurants would realize that doing something nice like buy our round of beers will keep people coming back. The location and restaurant: This is such a cool building, turned into a very cool restaurant! I went to Peace a couple years back so it's awesome to see how the area around the school is developing! My only small complaint is that the inside is small! This won't be a problem in the summer since their patio is one of the coolest in town, but when it's cold outside this can be an inconvenience. The Food: Ahhhhhmazing! I enjoyed my pork belly sandwich immensely and their mac and cheese was heavenly cheesy goodness! Everything was cooked to perfection and it was the perfect portion (I was full just as I finished the last bite). And for the price I was very happy! So why only three stars? The service was pretty awful. Our waiter never introduced himself, we received water that tasted terribly of copper (I imagine it was thanks to the metal pitchers) and no one apologized, our food took close to 45 minutes and once we received it our waiter never checked if we needed anything (more napkins would have been great...). Finally we were trying to pay so we could catch a show and asked if he could please rush the check since it was late. Eventually we went up ourselves to find someone to pay because he disappeared again, only for him to reappear and tell us he was getting to us. And when I got the bill I was uncharged $3 for mac and cheese after being told that sandwiches came with any side. Ugh. I don't mind paying just let me know when I ask in the first place. Like some of the other reviews I am torn. The food and atmosphere are very good but I can't get over when a waiter simply doesn't care. I'll just go ahead and admit that. $5 burgers on Monday's are a steal, but I end up paying full price more often than not because when you crave melty, gooey cheese, delicious brioche and perfectly cooked beef, ya can't always wait till Monday. I can't wait to try this place out when the weather warms up again! The patio is gorgeous, but the inside decor is just as unique. They did a great job with the space. I went with two friends for dinner. We each ordered a side salad and entree. When the salads came, they were huuuge, but the server said "And here is the Caesar side salad" etc so we were just pleased they were so large. I had the Station salad, which was just killer. Our entrees were each very good as well. When the checks came, we were each charged for full price salads (which explains the size). We made the server aware, and she took them off completely. The service is very poor. 1. Continually have had poor service here, but today lunch took over 40 minutes to get to the table so I had to get it to go to take back to the office. Waitress didn't seem to notice, say anything. 2. Table near me got up and left because they were never waited on 3. They don't have a host/hostess so on busy Friday night it is chaos Food is good. Good specials. Great outside eating area. Gotta be willing to be leisurely though. Though I like the food and I enjoy the ambiance, I will not be back until I hear the service has improved. Went here for lunch on Saturday and was pretty impressed! I wanted the Beet LT but they had run out so I went with the quinoa salad which was really good! I also got potato wedges on the side ( bladder out the healthiness of the salad! ) and they were sooo good. I don't know if they are made in house, but they are great and it's a generous serving in a jar. My friend got a REALLY good looking root beer float and the beer grilled cheese. She loved it as well. Overall I love the addition to the downtown area. The outdoor seating is amazing. I wish they had more indoor seating. We did have to wait but it was only about 10 minutes. Also, the drinks look a little pricey. Cocktails were mostly $12-13, and draft beer $5-6. Really pleasantly surprised with this place overall... While this place may have a great outdoor patio and cool decor inside, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done with the staff. I have been here twice now and neither experience was something to write home about. The first visit was toward the end of the night, and the staff seemed irritated we were there and ready to go. They cleared away our food when we stepped out for a cigarette, half full cheese and dip plates just thrown out. And we were charged full price. The second time, they seemed extremely understaffed on the patio during a nice day. It took almost 45 minutes for a cheese plate and grilled cheese. Our server was friendly, but slow to return and check on us as she was clearly overwhelmed. I think a bit more Front of the House training is needed at this place, just because your atmosphere is great doesn't mean you can slack on service. read more

My wife and I wanted to try somewhere new and decided to give The Station a try. We were plesantly surprised to find the little gem nestled a little off the beaten path. I thought the prices were very affordable, the food came out quickly, and the portions were not too small, but not over loading the plate. We tried the dip platter, got salds, and split the grilled cheese. Everything was great and we were happy to find lots of vegetarian-friendly options. I look forward to bringing back the entire family and would love give the outdoor space a try. read more
