(4.50) an attraction is the hundreds of "steins"-european beer mugs strung across the ceiling. reminds me of my youth with all the empty beer bottles and wine jugs strung around my room. nice ambience for a quiet drink amongst the locals, they are very friendly. read more

I have been coming to the stein since 2016. This place is not my typical environment (not a fan of dive bars). What made the difference for me was the bartenders, and feeling respected as a customer. Sure, sometimes the bartenders are not in the greatest mood, but I can also understand since I also wouldn't like dealing with entitled drunks who think because they're spending $50 bucks on a tab they get to make demands. If you read the reviews, you will notice a lot of people are in their feelings and probably get an adrenaline rush from writing reviews on Yelp to "stick to the man" pulling the racist card or whatever other reason they wanna manipulate to make this place look bad. I would encourage anyone to go have their own experience, and leave their own review based on that. Can't say it'll be life-changing, but I can tell you it won't be as bad as some of these people are making it out to be read more

Place is still a dive bar, but that's what you expect. They now have POS System and Updated some other stuff. It's never going to be a chain bar, but that's the point of a neighborhood spot. Some of the rough edges have been shaved off. Now the Testosterone has gone down and the service has gone up, but something is missing that would push this into a 3 star dive bar. Maybe they need to clean the asbestos ceiling or brighten up the paneled faux wood walls; I don't know. Downtown needs a dive bar, but it doesn't need a dirty one (does it?). Downtown bars ranking 1. Playt (Bar and way over priced food for the taste, still trying to find their identity) 7 Stein (Stein can go a little higher in rating, but this place is for real drinkers (dive) and not your restaurant eat and chill spot). 8. Super dive. it's a super chill place to have a drink, though. The bartenders are simple and no-nonsense, and the drinks are average. Several TVs, pool tables, and a juke box adds to the atmosphere. I can see how most may not like it, but a dive that has beer by the half pitcher ($4.50 and perfect if you have the next day off and don't feel like drinking a sixer at home in front of the TV), a TV permanently set to sports, and a jukebox that, on most nights, has Metallica vying for time with Stevie Ray Vaughn and George Strait is always ok in my book. Cheap drinks, a big TV with cable, and the ability to bring in Pizza House. It's like drinking at your buddies house, with more weirdos for color. read more

What a shitty bar. Bartender was either pilled out or tweaked out. Was dark and hard to tell. Not enough teeth amongst the regulars to chew a steak. Was difficult to tell if I was in a soup kitchen or a dive bar. Even by dive bar stand, this place is a shithole. And I really like dive bars. Oh well. Great place. Always passed it by cuz I generally hit up The Bistro. The Bistro was closed so I was like "Let's check this place out." I was having a pretty crap day, just got off work, and wanted to just relax with a nice draft beer. The bartender Brandon was really welcoming and even listened to all the crap I went through that day. (Basically I was just whining) really chill vibe. Awesome decor. Pool table. Juke box. Not an amazing selection of beer taps but they did have black diamond imperial which is one of my favorites. I was surprised they had it on tap! Definitely a great first impression. If you want a dive this is it. Mostly regulars that come through. I live up the street and go by often. Like sports? AT the core this is a Raider bar, but when it's not football season this is a GREAT place to watch the San Jose Sharks! At least 2 TVs on at any given time with anything from WWE or UFC to NASCAR or FMX. One night they even had a Yo-Yo championship on. Anything sports they said, just tell 'em what channel. $1 on the jukebox gets you 4 songs, anything from Frank Sinatra or Hank Williams Sr, to Metallica, Aerosmith, Journey, Feetwood Mac and more. Pool table is only $.50 and an they have an electric dartboard to top it off. $1.75 drafts of bud or miller, $2.50 if you want bottles. House drinks are only $3.75 and a call liquor starts at $5.50. We really love this place. We frequent often and love Erica, a bartender who really kicks ass. The owners are nice and the regulars are cool. They play the games a lot and when the games aren't playing, they have a jukebox that mostly plays great music. The steins hanging from the ceiling is really cool as well. The place has a pool table, but it is always taken, so we just sit at the happy bar and drink and mingle. Have met a lot of fun people there. Definitely one of our fave hang-outs in Hayward! Hoping they got their wi-fi fixed though, as I can't always check in when we get there because the wi fi is sketchy. Get it fixed Raul! lol. The best part about this place is the stories I always walk out with. I always order the same drink and each bartender reacts differently to the order. Some of the staff are friendly and other are indifferent. The price is always a little different, as is the pour. It's one of those real bars -- no nonsense. No fancy bourbon (just JB) ... Stoli/Sky is their best vodka. It's a place to get your domestic drink on. The local characters that hang out there are almost always wasted. I probably wouldn't feel comfortable alone in this bar -- but every person I take in there is always entertained. Overall -- I dig it. It's not fancy -- but it's colorful. read more

I had a lot of hope for this place. You walk in, it's dark and there are mugs hanging from the ceiling (so cute). We went here for a Giants playoff game. The beer is cheap, the liquor is super cheap, and there is a pool table towards the back of the bar. But the bar itself feels really local. Which can be fun, as long as you don't mind feeling like you're the only people who don't know everyone in the bar. We might come back for pool and cheap drinks. read more

Came here friday night feb 23. Ugly fat bartender dude with glasses had a bad attitude. Ignored my friends who were trying to order drinks and when he finally did get to us everythi g we said he gave us a attitude and exprssion we were asking stupid questions. They charge $22 for a pitcher which is way to much and gave bad service so i said fuck this. Wont be coming back. Go to chalk it up for pool. The staff is amazing, it's a cool little dive bar where you can come in and just have a good time without feeling like a piece of fresh meat. The bar snacks are $1.00 and you cant beat that. If you come in here cool, you get treated cool. Hands down one of my favorite places to grab a drink. read more

The bartenders here are always friendly, and drinks are very reasonably priced. The juke box has a great selection and is very rarely ever blocked so you can usually expect to take over the music and play what you want, if you want to. There is a single pool table at the back, which occasionally gets busy. The pool table area is decorated up with a bunch of football and baseball memorabilia, which is cool. It has a 1970s basement vibe. Overall, the place feels a little dumpy, but the staff are friendly, and the patrons are too...though I've met some strange characters here on more than one Occassion. I had a cold beer here before getting my tattoo done at Anchor Bay and this is a very chill / relaxed neighborhood bar where everyone is friendly. The most noticable things like the reviews said were the Steins on the roof. My Grandma is from Germany so she would have been fascinated to see it. Perhaps when I visit her again I'll share fellow Yelpers photos so she can see. The bartender was nice as well and was very welcoming. Once I was done with my cold beer, was off to get my tattoo.
