Let me just show some love to a new find...The Strand Salon. I know there's a crappy review on here that Yelp does not recommend, and I don't either. Someone was mad and had their say. I am happy with the salon and Imma tell you allll about it! I have been looking all over for a Devacurl-certified stylist close to home, that is reasonably priced and down to earth. Many other salons have umpteen million pics on their sites of the salon itself, showcasing the high class art work or open floor plan...The Strand caught me with their client photos, the great cuts and phenomenal color jobs that range from mild to wild. I needed to reshape my last Devacut from 3 months ago. My ends were dead and the curls hung kinda funny. I didn't need a wash/dry/style (Devacuts are done on dry curls) and made this clear over the phone. I was quoted $45 by the receptionist, and that seemed reasonable, so I made an appointment for my 6 yr old daughter to get her (straight) hair cut too. Everyone was SUPER nice and sweet to my daughter, and she felt very comfortable. I wish I could remember her stylist's name...anyways, she gave my daughter a great cut with a lot of movement and youthful layers and we all were happy with the results. Danielle did my Devacut and she knew exactly what she was doing. We chatted like we were old friends and she took the time to explain what she was doing to my hair. She gave me more layers in certain places to add volume (which I told her I loved). She also told me to call her in case anything didn't look right when I styled it myself. (It's PERFECT. NO COMPLAINTS) And get this - she only charged me $30. My GPS didn't get me right to their door, but it doesn't take a genius to look at an address number and drive a hundred feet til you see it. Don't let that deter you. Take a look at their client photos and you're going to want some Manic Panic style streaks instead of just a hair cut. It's just sooo tempting when you see their work. Meh. I moved to this area from Boston recently and would like to find a local place to get a haircut. (I still drive to Boston to get my hair colored, as I will not trust a new colorist easily, especially one in a small town.) I made an appointment here for a trim, walked in at my time and was not greeted by anyone for about 3 minutes. There were hairstylists in view and no one at the front desk. Finally a woman came over, confirmed my appointment and said my stylist would be with me in a few minutes. 5 minutes later I left, went to my car to get something to read and came back. I waited another 5 to 7 minutes. In the meantime, I am judging the salon based on the brand of products they have displayed; this typically speaks to level of training the stylists have, and of course they are going to recommend this products. They have Paul mitchell, which you can also buy at Procuts. Not really impressed, but I'm just here for a trim. The salon area looks clean, the hairdressers appear to have decent hair styles. However, the clientele can be heard cussing and gabbing loudly from the waiting area, which gave it more of a bar/nightlife vibe. One woman's husband is even seated in the salon area, participating in the boisterous conversation. I get up and approach one of the hair dressers closest to me, asking if they know if (whatever the stylists name was, I don't remember) was around? She is at the adjacent chair, within view of the waiting area- which means she knew I was waiting and yet couldn't take 30 seconds to come and say hey I'm sorry, I'm running late. She does a decent job at a trim, but I really didn't appreciate having to wait so long while not being acknowledged by her. If I am the paying client, and a new client, I would think you would really step it up with the customer service- at least acknowledge my presence. Save your money and go elsewhere- I seriously have had a comparable haircut with better customer service at Supercuts. I am still searching for a local place to get my hair trimmed... I've been in this area for 2 years. I would rather pay more money to be treated warmly, as if I matter and I'm not a disposable commodity like I felt I was treated here. Disappointed. read more

I'm a 65 year old woman who doesn't want to look her age.Danielle took the time to make sure everything was as she envisioned my hair. She wasn't patronizing as some stylists can be but kind and considerate. I have been struggling with my hair for years and looking for decent style and color that is flattering. Danielle had much information to share and she was generous with sharing it. Another stylist made great suggestions as well. When Danielle revealed the results with my hair, I was delighted. Arriving home after my visit, my husband said I looked younger with the style and color. It's wonderful to leave a salon happy with the results. Thank you, Danielle and the Strand. read more

Today I got a fabulous haircut from Jessie that is equal to -- even better than -- anything I've gotten on Newbury Street in Boston. The cut is current, stylish, and yet will be easy for me to do myself. Jessie offered thoughtful suggestions that were right in line with my personality, and I walked away with a beautiful cut that was better than I ever expected. I highly recommend her! read more

My hair has never looked or felt better! Danielle takes the time to listen to what I want and offers expert advice to achieve the perfect style. I used to go to this salon about two years ago. I no longer go there. The salon is not professional nor considerate of their patrons. Prices changed weekly Wait time and appointments were too long. I was charged full price for a student to do my hair I'm a good customer and a good tipper. I never cancel appointments and I'm never late. Another salon stylist had mentioned that The Strand was more for "out there color," not for my type of hair color needs (i.e. I'm over 30 and I work in a conservative profession). I took her word for it until a couple of weeks ago when I was desperate to find more than an "okay" salon to get my hair cut and colored. I came on Yelp, read some great reviews, checked them out on Facebook, and decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. I got the best hair cut and color I've had since moving to this sleepy (or "Quiet") corner of CT. Jessica, my stylist, was nice, easy to talk to, and understanding of my desire to make a change, but nothing too dramatic. She consulted with other stylists in the salon on the color as well to make sure it was spot-on. She did a nice job shaping my unruly thick head of wavy hair, too. Now, curly and straight, it looks gorgeous. My husband loves it (and he hasn't really complimented my hair since we moved here, ha ha). The salon itself is nothing fancy, in a little strip of stores (there's a bar/food place next door). It's clean and cute inside. They offer tea, coffee, and water to their customers and play some nice family-safe music (90's hits were on when I was there). There's comfortable conversation and a friendly vibe throughout the salon. The price was beyond reasonable (IMO) for the amount of time Jessica spent with me (and the amount of work I know it was to get my color right and my locks in check). As for a "type" of client, there really wasn't one. They do a brisk business from what I can tell; the day I was there I saw a couple of guys, a college-aged girl getting some dramatic silver streaks (looked gorgeous), a couple of other women with "standard" color, and I overheard that some kids were coming in as well. I think it's for anyone who wants a great cut and color in a relaxed, friendly environment. If I knew anyone else nearby (it's super hard to make friends in a rural community, FYI), I'd recommend it. Professional. Jess did a great job with blue color and cut for my kiddo. She was quick to assess a situation with her hair and corrected for best outcome. Meaning my kiddo had a bunch of minerals built up on her hair which caused a chemical reaction but she caught it the color turned out beautiful. Took my son for a haircut today. The Strand is my go to when I cannot get my son an appointment with my regular stylist, they are all good stylists so you can't really go wrong. It's taken many years, possibly the better part of a decade, to finally find a new salon to call home. I am SO glad I took a chance on this happening hair space, nestled in Woodstock Ct, of all places! My stylist, Rachel, spent a lot of time in our initial consultation over color, texture, etc. She pulled some of her coworkers into the conversation, because she and her coworkers seem to sincerely care about giving the customer the very best results. The atmosphere was fun and relaxing. I left with the best hair I've had since I moved from New Hampshire in 2003. Gem of a find. I have never been to this salon and after seeing what one of their (highly) educated stylists did to my daughters hair I will NEVER go there nor recommend them to anyone. She told the stylist to ONLY cut off dead ends and NOT go above her shoulders. The back does NOT go above her shoulders, however it looks like a hack job! (I could have done a better job) The front is about to her shoulders and again looks like someone did a hack job! NOTHING is even! This hair stylist also turned her chair away from the mirror so she did NOT really see it til she got home. Her husband saw it and told her and when she went back in and went up to the owner (who was working on another customer), no one seemed to see anything wrong with it. I would have thought that well educated and experienced hairdressers would know how to cut hair to be part of a GOOD hair salon. If I knew how to upload pictures to show how HORRIBLY bad her hair looks I would. I don't know her name, I just know it was NOT the owner. That is why I give this salon 0 stars. read more

I had to choose a new salon after having my hair done by the same stylist for over 10 yrs. I read many reviews on different sites about different places, and chose Rachael after seeing some of her work and reading reviews. I am so happy I did! I had a specific color I wanted and she had to do a little correction, but she was extremely attentive to what I wanted and fixed it to perfection. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was that she was a little behind so had someone else dry my hair, which would have been fine but the girl was new and inexperienced and didn't style my hair at all. just blew it straight and it didn't look nice. But Rachael fixed that too. And she gave me a little discount! So I am definitely not only going back to her, but recommending people I know to her too! After a very horrid haircut I had avoided salons for the last 15 years. My hair was in rough shape - very dry, brittle, breaking, flat, dead.. just awful and desperately needed more than my 'self trim'. I researched several salons in my area and decided to try The Strand after viewing all the beautiful cuts on their facebook page. Went as a walk-in today and was seated with Jessica. She was amazing. She listened to what I wanted, looked at the photos I brought, was very sweet and friendly and most importantly she understood how to deal with my awful hair and get me as close to what I was looking for as possible. I feel amazing, the cut is fantastic, my hair has volume and moves again. She even explained how to use products to keep the look and keep my hair healthy. I am so happy with the whole experience and I will definitely be going back to Jessica. I am so glad I found The Strand. read more
