Never have I ever walked out of a hair salon feeling worse than when I came in, but my experience at The Strand in Montrose was just that. I booked with Maral, hoping to get help with a knot in my hair caused by an accidental twist from a hair tie. It had become uncomfortable and was pulling at my scalp, so I explained the situation clearly to Maral and showed her the section in question. What happened next was very disheartening, to say the least. She took one look. Literally, maybe five seconds, made a face like she was disgusted, and told me she'd have to cut it. Zero effort to detangle. No shampoo. No conditioner. No oils. No ointments. No detangling spray. No tools. No advice. No referrals. She barely touched it. Just an immediate jump to scissors and a shrug. When I said I'd rather check around for someone who might actually try to detangle it first, she immediately ended the appointment. And that was that. She had no suggestions, no Plan B, and gave zero effort at all. Just awkward silence and quiet judgment until I left. I've never felt so much shame sitting in a salon chair. Not only did I walk out with the exact same painful knot I came in with, I also left feeling embarrassed for even thinking this place would help. It was an uncomfortable, unhelpful experience that wasted both of our time and made me regret even walking through the door. TL;DR Maral failed me. Not just as a stylist, but as a fellow human being. She was faced with a situation that required: -A bit of compassion. -A willingness to start the work, or at least discuss options. -Even just the decency to offer a referral or reschedule for a longer session. Instead, she looked at my hair and recoiled. Didn't work a single minute of the hour I had booked. Clearly decided it wasn't worth her time. No attempt. No plan. Just a grossed-out look and the door. That is shameful. I am not dirty. I take care of myself. I am not something to flinch at. What I needed was help. Not to be looked at like I'm wearing biowaste as a hat. I am clean. If this is how Maral handles clients in need, I can only imagine how many others have walked out of The Strand in quiet humiliation. If anyone at this salon still values client care, they might want to take a closer look at who's representing them behind the chair. Stylists are supposed to make their clients feel better, not worse. Zero stars, zero effort. Update: I've since come across another poor review about Maral that paints a strikingly similar picture. Different client, same lack of care, and a total refusal to take responsibility. In her public response, Maral questioned why the client waited months to speak up, as if there's a time limit on being mistreated. She deflected, minimized, and even cast doubt on the client's memory. That level of gaslighting and manipulation is disturbing. This client put her trust in Maral, and walked away with long-term damage to her hair. If The Strand has not seen that review, since it lives on Maral's personal Yelp page, they should. I have never had my hair dyed, not even highlights (yes, completely virgin hair). Not only was a wanting it to look VERY natural, but I am on a budget. I met with Emily to go over what I was looking for and my budget, and she explained everything to me and laid out pricing and was so helpful. The actual day of my appointment, she was wonderful and I could not be happier. I was stressed and asked a TON of questions (I'm not big on change but knew I needed some) and she was so patient and nice about answering all of them. She's also just fun to talk to! 10/10 price 10/10 service 10/10 quality (I'm so happy with my hair) My highlights are so natural looking but you can tell that something is just a little bit different and that brings more draw to my face (exactly what I wanted). I love this cute little salon! Everyone there is so nice and makes you feel at home right away. I've been coming here since it opened for Christina, my favorite hairstylist ever. She is experienced, funny, and patient, and can do almost anything to your hair - and if she can't, she'll have an honest discussion with you about why it's not possible and present great alternatives. I get so many compliments on my hair cuts whenever I go to her, and the peek-a-boo purple she does for me always delights people. I've also gotten some amazing hair straightening/keratin treatments with Christina. I highly recommend them if you want a non-toxic alternative to Brazilian blowouts. It's a treat for the senses to walk into this place from the decor, the products, the aroma of beautiful candles....amazing! I first had Valerie Stern, the salon owner, start working on my hair a few years back after receiving several damaging hair treatments. She fixed me right up and my hair has been healthy, grows fast, and the color is spot on against my skin tone. I receive compliments from other hairstylists frequently that the colors are perfectly melted together and that whoever did my hair "definitely knows what they're doing." I especially like that regrowth/roots don't look so noticeable with her techniques. I highly recommend The Strand! You won't be disappointed!! read more

I had very high hopes for this salon, and I expected that anyl hairstylists to choose from, would be with high level of professionalism and experience. I was very excited to go into my appointment and after 4 hours of dying my hair, I was utterly disappointed with the outcome. It was not as bright and blonde as the reference pictures of myself I showed to the hairstylist. It was kind of light in the front but my whole wheat in the back was still brown. I mentioned that it was not really what we talked about and it needs to be brighter, and she offered to come the following week and she would give me a discount to add the highlights (???). Let me be clear, I know what quality is and when you color my hair and the outcome is just a tad lighter than the hair color you came with, and a person attempts to charge you to add more brightness because the job was not done right to begin with, is not professional. I had my hair colored 5 times before and I even though I have thick hair, because my hair has always been on a lighter side (golden brown), they get dyed very easily. I still don't know what the issue was because I did see her to be thorough with the foils and taking her time, the result was abysmal. After expressing that I am unsatisfied and I won't pay for the additional round of highlights, she just charged me $100 for the products. Yes, it was nice for her to offer that, but also acknowledging off the bat that the final result was evidently not what we talked about, would have been a much different story. I will be clear. I am not saying that all the staff at the salon would give you the same experience I had, but I think all hairstylists presented at the salon should have a similar level of experience, so whoever I choose would provide the service I can be happy with. I've seen some very nice pictures of the work done at the salon, which is why I chose this salon to begin with. read more

My hair always looks good and I've gone through many different styles and colors. I've been a redhead, had dark, almost black hair, strawberry blonde, and blonde with blue streaks. Have you seen the new hair salon in Montrose called The Strand? For those long time residents it's where Needle and Haystack used to be. It is absolutely adorable, and I admit, it is half the reason I booked there! Had an appointment with Valerie, the owner, today and absolutely loved what she did with my hair! I could tell in talking to her that I trusted her judgement and let her go to work. I hate when you go in a salon and they are wishy washy about what colors, etc. would work best for you.
