It's big and well-established - They seem equipped to do a huge range of things for women, above and beyond the other places. They also were much cleaner, spiffier, and were twice the size of any other place I passed by. The salon's also been used for women on some of the makeover TV shows. 2. Great, helpful staff - Really friendly, and I liked them a lot. They gave me a lot of pointers about the area, which I really appreciated. 3. Fluent English speakers - I know it's the Bronx, but three places I'd visited nearby struggled to answer me when asking "can you give me a haircut?". Seemed like decent salons, but made me worried about how I'd further convey the "no buzz cut" concept :) 4. Surprisingly good price - $15 for a haircut. 5. Good haircut - My wife approved and liked it. They didn't scalp me or get scissor-happy or anything, I thought it was a good haircut too. I'd recommend this place to women to try out - seems like the best salon place within three miles of here. I'd recommend it to men too.

But, this…read morelast one took the cake. 1st visit: 2 weeks ago I asked for a "glam wave twist out" with clip in extensions added. Diane, the owner recommended a hair company for the extensions and I followed her recommendation. Prior to my appointment I asked Diane if the hair texture of the extensions were correct for my hair. She said yes. Appointment day approaches: Time of the appointment - 10am. When did I leave the shop? 9pm!! She twisted, took it out, re-twisted, looked left, looked right, up and down and basically seemed like she didn't know what she was doing. Diane's reasoning was that the extension hair didn't match my texture. I paid $261 dollars and left out feeling dissatisfied with the style. (Also her attitude was horrid) however, I gave her the benefit of the doubt and returned 2 weeks later. 2nd visit: Today. Now this is the part!! This time around I asked for a Sade ponytail (as it states on her site) which is basically a low ponytail that is braided with extension hair. I will let the pictures talk for themselves. I paid $125!! Again, she blamed the braiding hair, she blamed my hair length and everything else except her lack of skill. $125 and 3.5 hours later and voila!! Client beware!!!

A girlfriend of mine actually gave me the info for a different stylist that she uses regularly but upon calling up for a consultation, he referred me to Diane based on what I wanted to have done. I subsequently called Simplee Beautiful and made an appointment for the following week. I was initially relieved that I could just walk in and not have to have a consultationIt was a 2pm appointment and I got there pretty early but had to wait. I've never seen a set up like this before. It's like a salon mall. The location is a commercial building that housing various businesses. The salons are located on the lobby floor, towards the left at the Sola Salon Studios. There has to be at least twenty mini salons that make up the entire area. They're pretty cute, well-kept and clean. I basically just had to wait until the owner came to begin the process. She arrived at my appointment time and we spoke about what I would be getting done. I wanted to get a colour and have my hair lightened. We decided to cut a significant amount off because I want to make sure I'm starting off healthy. To reiterate, I do my hair myself so I treat, wash and style my own hair at home. Based on the state of my hair and what I explained my regiment to be, Diane offered up some key suggestions to help improve the state and health of my hair. She told me what I was doing wrong and told me exactly what to do and what products to use on my own based on my active lifestyle in order to achieve better results. She gave me a paper an pen so I could write everything down. I didn't walk out until 730 which was difficult. My stomach was growling and this is another reason why I kind of dislike natural salon visits because let's face it, it's going to take a longer time than if the hair is chemically treated or naturally straight which is another reason I prefer to do my own hair on my own time. If I'm going to be anywhere for that amount of time, Id rather be enjoying myself but to at least be in the comfort of your own home makes it a bit more tolerable. In her defense, my colour took a bit longer than expected because she did not use bleach to lift my hair colour, which I respect A LOT, and because my hair was so difficult, she had to process it for longer. In the end, I loved my colour and as for the cut; it's growing on me and I know it's for the best. The price, however, was a little outrageous. I ended up spending $300 for a cut, colour and twist-out style which I think is extravagant. I was prepared to pay close to that for what I originally intended to have done (dyeing clip-in pieces to match and style everything) but a big chunk of that got taken off the table while we were discussing possibilities so, I have no idea where the styling portion of my balance came out to $135.00. She had already quoted me $100 + $10 for the colour and extra processing time plus $55 for the cut. I am definitely willing to pay for something if it's worth it. I probably would have been a return customer had the end price not been so ridiculous and also not explained considering we changed the original plan, the fact that I was e-mailed a receipt without itemization and the length of time I spent, I probably would not come back. I basically spent 6 hours of my last vacation day, sweating under a dryer and steamer. As I said before, I was given a lot of gems of information during my visit and I definitely took notes, asked questions and picked Diane's brain for anything that might help improve my natural hair journey and I plan to implement her suggestions in my regiment, beginning this weekend after my heavy workout days. While I wouldn't go back, I am at least happy that I left looking good and got a chance to get information that will ultimately help me in the long run. If you do decide to check out this salon or any of the other salons located in Sola Salon Studios, make sure the stylist is aware of exactly what you want and you're both satisfied with what will be done and how much each service will cost. So, if you call up for an appointment and they schedule you, you may want to ask for a consultation first so that everyone is on the same page. I said before that I was initially relieved that she Diane did not require a consultation prior to an appointment but hindsight, I think I could have made a more educated decision on whether or not the price would be worth it as well as knowing exactly for what I am paying.
