Do NOT let the outside 'looks like a shoebox' appearance fool you. When you go inside, don't let the eclectic decor fool you - this place is legit. We are from Texas and we're not expecting much when we went. Ok - we were positively surprised. The chips and salsa are good - the salsa has a nice flavor and not hot which is good for chips. The queso has a very good flavor. We tried the California burrito which had carnitas, rice, refried beans and was topped with white queso. The carnitas was prepared perfectly - great flavor and moist. We also tried the steak burrito (I forget the name) and it was also very good. The steak had a great flavor as did the rice and beans. Finally, we tried the chicken taco salad which was also very good. The grilled chicken was full of flavor and the cheese, lettuce and tomato were very fresh. I added the green salsa which is both flavorful and has a mild kick to it. This is truly the first really good Mexican restaurant we've found in Virginia! We'll go back when we are in town again. Don't let the fact that this place looks like a converted Waffle House restaurant deter you from visiting! The menu is an interesting mix of Mexican, pub and subs with something for everyone! I eat Mex/TexMex about 1x a week in lots of different places. My wife and I were on our way to Roanoke from DC and saw the ratings for this place and we thought we'd give it a try. We're very surprised of the ratings given by others. It was average tasting at best; small portions; the marguarita did not have much alcohol; and the price was about 35% more than it should have been. Got here late Saturday afternoon based upon the good YELP reviews! Noticed there wears availability with social distancing! Since it was my first time not sure if I had to seated or if I can find my own seat! Thankfully the friendly young waitress pointed me to a corner seat! Immediately like any Mexican restaurant, they brought the tortilla chips and salsa! The salsa was not spicy at all, so I added some provided green Jalapeños Cholula Hot sauce! Quite delicious! The ice cold Horchata was absolutely delicious drink! Takes Mexican food to a whole new level for sure! Ordered something I had never tried before the Mexican Torta sandwich which came almost like a stuffed meat panini! It was perfectly crisp probably one the tastiest sandwiches O have had In awhile! I am going to start looking for this sandwich from now on at Mexican joints, to see how it compares to this! So glad I came here! I liked it so much I left a more than 20% tip! MAN their food is good! Love stopping in here when I'm not feeling like cooking for the night. Their service is always speedy and nice. The inside is small so I can see the restaurant getting full during lunch and dinner times...but it's worth the wait. My favorite Mexican restaurant in the Valley! The ratio of the peppers outweighed the rice portion, making it just a big bowl of peppers. But the queso and the flavor was good. Then they barely put any cilantro on the tacos, the shells got soggy fast and I think they added water to their sauce cause it was very runny and it had absolutely no flavor whatsoever!! Neither the green or the red sauce had flavor. I'm guessing they were running low and tried to stretch it by adding water. I paid $30 for these 2 items. I was on a road trip to the east coast and stopped in Harrisonburg for the night. We decided to stop here to pick up dinner since we were at the hotel across the road and bring it back since we had a long day of driving. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the tacos were. Very satisfying since we were starving after driving for so long without much options along the way. We had carne asada and adobada tacos. Very flavorful and authentic, and that's coming from a girl from southern California where taco shops are around every corner. Service was also friendly and welcoming. Underrated place in Harrisonburg! They give you chips and salsa as soon as you're seated and will keep refilling both so watch out because it will fill you up lol. Also, they give you a huge beer mug for water which I thought was hilarious. I ordered the carnitas tacos which came with 4 tacos (topped with just cilantro and onion) and salsa verde. They had several hot sauces ranging from different levels of heat on the side of the table so the heat freak in me appreciated that. Tacos were legit and will leave you satisfied. My dining partner got barbacoa tacos with a side of rice and she liked everything too. The portion for just a side of rice is huge though! Service was good. There isn't much to look at especially from the outside, but this unassuming (and somewhat confusingly named) little place has the best arroz con pollo I have ever had -- super cheesy and delicious.
