The Sugar Shack made me the most amazing hot fudge sundae ever! We went not long before closing but made it in time. The gentleman that waited on us was very friendly. My Sunday was huge! It had tons of hot fudge and lots of nuts which I loved. And the ice cream flavor was delicious. I couldn't even eat the whole thing, but I got pretty close lol. There are tons of hand dipped ice cream selections, plus soft serve as well. They also serve food. And from the large order that was being picked up in front of us it must be decent. This place is pretty close to the beach. There's a large dining room as well as a large outside patio with tables and chairs. I would definitely recommend checking them out. This place was cute in passing so I had high hopes for their ice cream. Walking in, I immediately noticed the lack of cleanliness. The floors, the counter, the windows, eating area outside... it wasn't easy on the eyes. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly. I'm giving him the two stars. My kids got strawberry milkshakes and I got a hot fudge sundae. They didn't finish their milkshakes for one reason or another. My sundae was literally inedible. It had waaaaay too much fudge so it melted the ice cream immediately. I took three or four bites before giving up and trashing it. I never got a single bite of ice cream. The prices on website were much cheaper than the prices listed/charged inside. They didn't have the flavors that they website listed, which was disappointing, as they were the once we were looking forward to trying. Very unsanitary with dirty rags all over the counters...some of the ice cream fell onto the counter and they scooped it back in the cup to serve to me! We skipped dessert after eating lunch at The Crab Shack to have dessert here, because we always try an ice cream place on vacation. Big mistake! The man that took my fiance's order was rude and acted like it was the last place on Earth he wanted to be. I don't think he once made eye contact with either of us. There was no description on the menu for what was on a sundae when he began to order. The employee proceeded to put 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in a styrofoam drinking cup. When my fiance realized that was the start of his order, he asked why he didn't get to choose his ice cream flavors. That's when another employee butted into the conversation with an attitude, saying that was an "American" thing. Who pays $9 for a sundae to only have the option of vanilla ice cream? They finally agreed to let him choose his flavors but proceeded to scoop the vanilla ice cream back into the container, pulling the styrofoam cup apart over the tub while he did it. When we saw that we said no thank you and walked out. This place seems unsanitary and has no customer service at all. We walked across the street and got ice cream at Savannah Praline instead. A one man operation trying to survive in this COVID world! After a walk on Tybee Beach, all I had to do was mention if my wife wanted a ice cream and we were immediately turning into the Sugar Shack! This was a first for us and we had to wait in line as they had a six customer limit inside the store queue where you ordered (and used to be able to eat your ice cream), now it's all outside in a cover area. It was a beautiful day so we didn't mind the wait and the shade was fine. After a short period of time we finally made to counter and ordered. I went with the Pralines and Cream and Jo was interested in the Turtle ice cream and said she would order it if it had caramel. It indeed had caramel but it crashed and burned when the server said it had coffee and was really good! Well, no matter how good it was, Jo (my wife) and coffee in any way shape or form do not mix so she ordered the same ice cream I did (a absolute violation of our ordering rules!). She did though had it in. a homemade waffle cone (I missed that sign and went with a cup...) and she skirted by with a technicality. Food 4.5. A very good Pralines and Cream, heavy on the pralines, nice butter fat content and caramel mixed in with vanilla ice cream (A fav!). As a bonus the waffle cone was excellent (rats again!) Service 2.5 One man operation while efficient, has its issues as the trash can was full, and I am not sure how the tables get bussed other than the customer. Also the restroom was blocked off due to COVID. Atmosphere 3.5 Not fancy but outside is balmy with that salty beach air and you can see the beach is a short walk away... Great (yet divey) breakfast place on the island. We were told that the "old lady" that runs this place makes the best biscuits. Indeed she does. And, the cinnamon rolls weren't too shabby either. Unfortunately, the hard flavors were freezer burnt and the soft flavors tasted more like ice milk than creamy jersey ice cream as advertised. The ice cream was creamy with lots of cookie dough in it and the waffle cone was fresh. I'm giving it two stars due to the fact the exterior and interior was not as pleasing. On the outside paint was peeling and metal and signs were rusted poorly. The interior needed cleaning due to oldness showing for there 50th year anniversary. Both exterior and interior needed repairs too and it was almost hot as it was inside as it was outside. The guy inside was very friendly, funny, and helpful though which made it better. Food was okay! Ordered the "Tar Heel burger" it came in a checkered basket of soup! By soup I mean the slaw and chili on that burger was over done so much to the point my burger immediately fell apart because the bottom buns was so SOGGY.. I ate it and it was delicious but not only was that ridiculously sloppy but also the cheese fries I ordered with it was simply cheddar cheese microwaved on the top. Not what I was expecting. I would have let all that slide but the guy who took our order was very bothered that we asked for a couple things changed like adding slaw or substituting for a different cheese. I work in food and believe in always leaving a good tip. I tipped nothing because the service was horrible. They ran out of sweet tea and didn't even make more they just said that was it for the day. This place could really do well with a scrub down and a fresh coat of paint. It's run down inside and to make matters worse they don't do a good job of keeping there tables clean from one customer to the next. Still, the food was surprisingly good. I had a BLT with chips. The bacon was crisp, the lettuce and tomatoes fresh. It wasn't anything fancy, just served up in a basket on plain white toast, but it far exceeded my expectations that were based on the appearance of the dining room alone. My husband got a shrimp po boy. Again, nothing special here, probably frozen shrimp but they were freshly fried and smelled great. They were served on a French bread style sub roll with a side of tarter sauce and fresh, hot fries. In addition to sandwiches and burgers they have a lot of ice cream flavor and shakes. The bathroom was in need of a deep clean but it wasn't horrible. Kind of reminded me of your typical wind and sun-worn sandy beach bathroom. There was soap and paper towels and toilet paper. The toilet was clean enough to do what I needed to do. I guess I might come back here and maybe eat outside. I could see myself sitting on the patio in a wet swimsuit with a BLT or an ice cream. Just probably will avoid going inside for too long. read more
