Don't let the outside fool you. It did me last year, but this year we went ahead and tried it. Sundae Cafe is wedged between a liquor store and a convenience store, this is apparently a thing on Tybee island. What you find inside is a nicely appointed restaurant with a beautiful long bar which we highly recommend you eat at. Our bartender Christy was amazing. But more about her later, right now I will talk about the food. We started with the margarita scallops, which was chunks of seared scallops soaked in margarita on toasted wonton chips with a black bean corn, salsa and drizzle with a local aioli, YUM! We also had their fried green tomatoes, which came with apricot horseradish sauce and aoli. Kiki had the catch of the day, which was a grilled piece of grouper atop mediterranean couscous and a medley of mediterranean vegetables. I had the prime rib, which came with lobster Chili Churri butter and a brandy peppercorn sauce. Both entrees were amazing. Now back to our bartender Christie. To say that she wears many hats is an understatement. She greeted us when we sat at the bar, by the way, did I mention that you can reserve seats at the bar? She described the menu items in a way that you only expect to find from a waiter in the finest restaurants in the world. She addressed any and all allergy issues relating to these dishes all the while she is making drinks for patrons at the bar as well as handling the service bar for all the patrons in the restaurant. Without missing a beat, she takes our order.Buses plates from other customers and continues to make drinks for everybody in the restaurant. At this point I think I told her her new nickname should be the Flash. At one point during our dinner, we saw her serve a bottle of wine to another couple at the end of the bar. Her presentation was that of a full wine sommelier with pouring a taste for approval while showing the label of the bottle as she waited for the customers approval then pouring the glasses after approval was given. We came here the first night we were on island to celebrate my husband's birthday. I'd made reservations for dinner an online several weeks in advance. I was a bit disappointed to be given a tiny two-top table as there were several other couples seated at 4-tops and enough other open tables when we arrived early for our reservation. The menu had some interesting items, but they were out of (or down to the last one) of a couple items. Plus there were a few added nightly specials on the blackboard. I was surprised that haddock was the fresh catch fish of the day as I'd always thought of it as a northern fish. They start you out with a couple biscuits and peach jam for the table. We decided to share an order of fried green tomatoes to start. There were 3 slices topped with dollops of creamy cheese on the plate. They were good. After that, I had a lobster tail along with a side of skillet potatoes. My husband had a crab cake appetizer. Both were just okay. He said there was a lot of filler (60/40) in the crab cake. For dessert, we shared a slice of lemon cake with lemon curd dressing. The waitress brought it to the table with a lit candle as it was my husband's birthday. The cake was very good. This had been touted as the best fine dining option on island. It was good -- with an innovative menu -- but not comparable to other cities' fine dining establishments. My wife picked this place to celebrate my birthday dinner. Reportedly the best restaurant on Tybee Island. Nestled in between a Liquor store and Convenience store, this place is charming and upscale inside. We were seated at a small two top and our server was there with water and menus right away. After looking over the beverage menu I saw one of my go to NZ Sauvignon Blanc wines, White Haven, and ordered a glass. We shared an order of Fried Green Tomatoes with Goat cheese which was three thick slices of green tomato with warm goat cheese which was delicious. I ordered a Jumbo Lump Crab Cake appetizer as my main and my wife had a lobster tail. The Crab cake was good with a 60:40 Crab:filler. I rarely write negative reviews, but this experience was frustrating enough that others should be aware. We had a 7:00 PM reservation and arrived exactly on time, only to watch a group of six who came in after us get seated before us. That alone was disappointing, but even after being seated 20 minutes went by without service. For a restaurant that requires reservations and presents itself as a higher-end dining experience, this level of service is incredibly disappointing. It felt disorganized, inattentive, and frankly disrespectful of our time. There may be good food here, but based on the service alone, I would not return or recommend it. read more

Wow, what a surprise! Fancy eating in a bougie, intimate little restaurant with great food in a *gas station* mini mall. We werent super hungry so we ordered a few drinks, a shrimp tostada appetizer, a side of their green beans, and a side of their sweet potatoes to share. It was all good, but dang the sweet potatoes with streusel topping are absolutely INCREDIBLE. We eyeballed some other guests dinners and my only suggestion would be to come HUNGRY or plan to share. Oh my gosh, a MUST! Passed this stripe mall plenty since we arrived, didn't realize that there was a this gem of a restaurant! Got the smokehouse burger and fries, do not pass on the fries they were so so good. Burger was HUGE, flavor was amazing, the onion ring batter had such great seasoning. I'll be dreaming about it. Crab cake was on special got one as an à la carte, again huge, flavor phenomenal. Also tried the collard greens, first time ever I liked them! Can't comment too much as I haven't had them before. I went to this restaurant because multiple coworkers suggested it. I ordered my filet medium well wanting it pink inside and it came out bloody. I asked my waitress again to have it medium well, sent it back, and it came back like shoe leather. My waitress (Michelle) was nonexistent. Not only was the food bad, but the service was worse. I will go back and tell my coworkers this is one of the worse restaurants I have ever eaten at. Not worth the money I paid for an overdone filet. Came here after a recommendation from a local. Definitely a more upscale restaurant on the island. Wonderful menu. I ordered the mixed grill. The food was wonderful. My meal came with crab stuffed flounder, jerked shrimp and grilled scallops over grits. We had to sit at the bar. The bartender knew several people at the bar and spent the majority of the time talking to them. It was difficult to get her attention. If I came again I would sit in the restaurant area. For a fine dining price I feel the service we received was undervalued. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience and food! Took our friends here for their 10 year anniversary and it did not disappoint! We made a reservation and were promptly seated. Inside the small strip mall lies a wonderful restaurant. Our server was polite and attentive. Two orders of the surf and turf, one pick your own adventure with filet (see photo) and one of the tv-famous grilled cheese sandwiches. The food was cooked perfect and everyone was too full to move. Don't let the fact that this place is located in a small shopping center fool you. As soon as you step inside you are transported to a wonderful higher end dining experience. Our server was very knowledgeable regarding the specials and recommended the perfect one for us. This local tybee spot came highly recommended to me from friends as well as being featured on diners drive ins & dives. Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. The service was extremely slow. We were at the restaurant for almost 2 hours for lunch. We had looked at the menu online while waiting to be seated so we knew what we wanted and ordered as soon as our server came. I felt really bad for the waitresses because you could tell they were doing their best however it took over 10 min to even get a water ordered and then we never got any refills. I ordered the fried shrimp which came with two sides. I chose slaw and sweet potato fries. The shrimp itself were cooked well however they still had the tails on which I found odd for fried shrimp. The coleslaw was terrible, not sure what the seasoning pictured is but it was not good. Fries were decent. The dish also came with hush puppies that were absolutely delicious, definitely homemade. Overall I would not say that the food outweighs the service and wouldn't be back, however my husband ordered the salmon sandwich and disagreed with me that his was worth it. One positive is they source lots of their ingredients locally. read more

Don't drive by this place because it's in between a gas station and liquor store. Once inside you forget the exterior! This farm to table restaurant is a must when visiting Tybee! Don't sleep on this unassuming gem when visiting Tybee. This was my second visit since my first dinner there left such an impression. We started with the Oysters Daufuskie (I had them the first time and was so excited that they were featured again) and the peach Bourbon calamari. Both were excellent. My friend was tossed between fried oysters and a crab cake...so she got both. The portions were so generous and she decided that the oysters were her favorite bite of our trip. I had a pimento crusted filet which was cooked to perfection...so delicious. There was no room for dessert but I'm definately going to leave room for that on my next trip! And let's talk about the service. We were lucky enough to have Doug wait on us at the bar. He had also waited on me on New Years Day. He's friendly, menu saavy and very helpful. He also made my friend a wonderful mocktail using ginger beer. Thanks again Doug! Everything was so great and I'll be back to visit on my next trip from Louisville. Celebrated a family reunion here for dinner. Very minimal gluten free menu. Fried seafood was enjoyed by the rest of the family. The lemon drop and French martinis were yummy. Dessert was shared and a small bit of leftovers were brought back for breakfast the next day. My family ate at Sundae Cafe while on vacation this week. The restaurant was highly recommended by a friend. It was quaint, mixing design and menu touches to attract tourists without turning off the local crowd who obviously love the place. The bartender made a great Manhattan and killer Shirley Temple. We had a good meal--maybe a bit too much happening on some of the plates--trying staples and specials, with really good service. There was a snafu--one of the items ordered didn't arrive with the rest of the meal and given the generosity of the portions, it was not really needed. I was ready to joke the matter off and ask that it be removed from the bill and keep it moving. Before I could, the server came over, acknowledged the omission, and let us know she was bringing it over anyway and taking off of the check. She also comped the two cheesecake desserts. It's a small little place at lunchtime they have one menu and for dinner. They have a different one. It is so tiny that you would pass it if you didn't know it was there but we've had both lunch and dinner there and the service is great. The food was amazing and the ambience was that of Tybee being by the seashore. It's just hard to find a parking spot. read more

We went for a day trip to Tybee Island and wanted to end our day on a high note by going to have a nice seafood dinner. Sundae Cafe came out with the best reviews in the area. It was a popular place even on weeknights. The place is located in a strip mall. It has nice decor with lights dimmed. We went straight for entrees. We ordered the halibut with gnocchi and spinach what was excellent (special for the night). I ordered the scallops with blacked green tomatoes... it was tasty but wish there were more scallops (only 3). Last dish was the seafood bouillabase. It had shrimp, fish and scallops with sausages. Dish was super salty. Not sure if it was their off night but we felt they may have put salt on the dish twice. Server tried to explain that it's supposed to be salty. I've had bouillabaisse before and it was never that salty. They comp 50% of the bouillabaisse. We decided to skip dessert after that. I would recommend skipping this or try the broth when it first came out to make sure it's to your taste. Main entrees are about $35 and up so they are on the higher end of the spectrum. read more

Beyond excellent!! Service from the start was perfect. Our server was personable and knew her stuff. Her recommendations were spot on!! Drinks stayed filled and all courses came out with perfect timing. The food!! So amazing!! We were a party of 8 and all 8 of us had meals that were prepared perfectly. Very surprising little place in a strip shopping center adjacent to a gas station. Service was top notch, drinks were very good. Mixed experiences with the food. One in our party enjoyed the Jumbo crab cake appetizer as a meal and said, "Best crap cake I've ever had." The other dishes were just okay. Disappointing for the price point. "Cafe" is a misnomer since it's a legit sit-down restaurant with nice interior and ample seating. Had the lunch special of the day, which was Fried Chicken & Two Sides. The white meat option came with breast and wing, both of which were juicy. The complimentary corn bread was surprisingly good. However, the waffle fries were too thin and the Lima beans were too salty. All of the food were a tad excessively greasy. The White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, however, was very good.
