I visited The Sundown Pub last night and can confidently say that this will be a new watering hole for me on the reg. Strong drinks, fantastic service, reasonable prices, fun atmosphere and solid food. Yes, the bar is under a new ownership regime as mentioned by a curmudgeon below, but I would argue that new ownership could be a huge win for The Sundown and for the St. John's community. From what I saw and experienced, I have nothing but positive things to say. I can't wait to return for soul food Saturday's! Cheers to a new chapter for this classic neighborhood dive. read more

waited around for about 10 mins to watch a bartender not have the ability to greet or let us know he even saw us and would get to us just to walk out while he was asking Siri if he was single..... then asked if we wanted a drink as we walked out. 5 stars will eat here again! Let's just start with the food. All I can say is wow, Chef Peanut you are a food Goddess!! My husband and I heard the Sundown Pub had new owners and we wanted to give it a try. My husband does not care for greens but I asked him to try the collared because they were OUTSTANDING and was so impressed that he ate every last bite! Oh and the ribs, cornbread's and baked beans are out of this world too! It's a neighborhood bar by my home. It's just boring tho hardly anybody ever in it. It has ok to decent beers on tap. The only thing really going for the sundown is it's one of the only bars still staying open till 2:30 am and they still can't pack this place. I love this place, it's fucking underrated as fuck. Like seriously, they have great options that you usually find at boujee places like the Urban German in Cathedral Park... except the Radler is on tap here. They have a unicorn beer that is purple and tastes like blackberry juice. The people here are cool and nice and friendly, very Portland having fun and being brotherly. They have a dart board and a covered patio! It's cozy and relaxing inside, the food is incredibly affordable. Two words: chicken tenders. This place is great they even had a resident crazy lady who likes to hang out on a tree stump outside. I think the three bad reviews are from drunken bastards who got kicked out for being sloppy go cry about it. Love sundown and their cowboy in tight pants neon sign. read more

Their drinks are STRONG!! How could you go wrong with $3 tequila shot (pretty sure it's a triple shot) plus a coronita. Maybe it was just a University of Portland special, but in any case, we always had a good time at Sundown. read more

This place is a great low key neighborhood bar. If you are in the bar before 4:20 PM and have ordered a drink, you get your next drink for ONE DOLLAR! They have fun little wooden tokens you can snag to show you were there at 4:20 PM. I am not a beer drinker so I am always on the lookout for bars that have a good selection of ciders. They typically have selections on tap and in bottles. There seem to be quite a few beers to choose from as well. If cider and beer are not what you are looking for they also have a fully stocked bar. As far as food goes I have only tried the chips and salsa. I was satisfied with this snack and would gladly order it again. I'd say its hard to truly mess up chips and salsa. For entertainment they have a pool table. pinball machine, and even some silly board games. I will surly be back again for the 4:20 PM dollar drink special! read more

Sundown was our neighborhood dive spot for happy hour pre-Covid and I am happy to see with a few adjustments they've been able to remain open! Bartenders are friendly, drink specials are good, there's smoking area out back and -- best of all -- the Drunken Noodle next door (use to) deliver right into the bar/onto the patio! (But now we order ahead & pick up our food to bring back to Sundown.) For noodles, smokes, and stiff drinks in a low-lit/low-judgment atmosphere, it doesn't get better than Sundown. read more

every bartender I've had has been great except the wanna be biker boy who always wears the denim vest, you can tell he's very unhappy and doesn't care to be there. My first visit he completely ignored me unless I caught his attention, and every other visit he's been generally unpleasant. Makes customers feel like an annoyance. Avoid this bar when he's working if you're trying to have a good night. read more

Don't order wine or you'll get maybe 3oz or 2oz. I looked at the bartender like he was crazy for pouring that. Meanwhile the cocktails are poured so strong you'll fall over. Not sure why boxed wine at this place is so precious that you get a tiny pour but I won't be ordering that again or visiting soon. Crowds cool. Patio is cool but neighbors complain so it shuts down around 11pm. Meh. read more

I used to really love this spot- as a musician who played their first gig there and attended fun events they would host, I always felt like it had a welcoming atmosphere. That is, until one of their bartenders (an older white male) was unecessarily aggressive with my partner (a person of color.) Upon arriving we ordered our first drink (I was sober and he was a little tipsy.) The bartender sat the exact drink my partner ordered in front of him and someone from behind us (there was noone at the bar when we arrived) tried grabbing the drink from my partner's hand. My partner, being confused about what was happening, didn't budge and without pause or basic conversation the bartender began screaming loudly and aggressively at my partner. At first (especially because we thought things were directed at the person who tried to grab the drink) we just froze in place until I asked the bartender if he was talking to my partner. The bartender continued screaming at my partner "SIR PUT THE DRINK DOWN NOW!" as if my partner was holding a knife. Completely unecessary. After realizing what had happened we were so uncomfortable that we said we wanted to close out. The bartender aggressively stated that it was free and to "get the f*** out." I've done bartending myself and have seen patrons misbehaving or acting stupid in a way that warranted action, but for something as small as a mixup (which wasn't even necessarily my partner's fault) the point is that this was beyond unprofessional and unwarranted. There was no reason to escalate that situation so quickly and in the way that he did. Also, the fact that my partner was the only person of color in the bar at the moment made the situation feel incredibly targeted since my partner wasn't being agressive in the first place. Will not be coming here again. read more

Very nice neighborhood bar. Great homemade food, you gotta try their artichoke dip! Plenty of beers on tap and solid mixed drinks. Super friendly staff and the cleanest bar bathrooms around! It has a good mixed of clientele, between college students and NoPo residents. I think they open at 4:00 pm or near Sundown... haha get it? This is a nice little neighborhood pub. Decent drink prices, pool, pinball, food, outdoor patio, friendly staff. I liked the ambiance and food at The Sundown Pub, though my husband liked it less. His Chicken Enchilada was cold in the middle. My Vegan Bowl was lovely, though! 3 Bean Chili, rice and greens (kale, I think). All mixed up it was nicely spiced, and it was a HUGE portion - certainly enough for another meal. Plus, they had Anthem cider on tap! (A side note: the women's bathroom is a one-seater, but it's cute.) If I lived in that area I would probably be a regular. read more

What can I really say about this place? Matthew B. pretty much nailed this on every level. Menu always changes and I ve have eaten there a good bit. Everything I ve ever had there was great. The portions are huge. I really doubt you could find a better value. The bartenders and super friendly. From my first visit there I am always greeted with a hello when I walk in the door. Perfect neighborhood hipster bar. Microwaved food and pudding shots. But service is usually friendly and the crowd is a mix of old timers from the area, new 30-40s hipsters, and college kids. I kinda love this place. Was new to the area and to Portland when I left my first review and have since realized how special local pubs like this are to an ever changing and demolition happy city. The Sundown Pub just opened this month a block away from my house. Every experience I've had here has been marked by unusually friendly service. What looks like a grumpy hole-in-the-wall is actually a cozy (and smokey) neighborhood dive. Very entertaining and "colorful" people hang out here. Even though it's only a few blocks away, it doesn't seem to draw quite the same frat-tastic crowd as the Twilight Room. They host live music, but it's in a back room. So you can still talk with friends and hear the music. You are not worthy of their jukebox. Hava Negila and David Bowie? The other day my house mate and I were bored, so we sauntered up the street for a round of pool. They were showing Caddyshack. I approve. read more

I almost gave this place 5 stars just for introducing me to the shot of whiskey/shot of pickle juice combo - sounds bizarre, tastes amazing. Their beer is ice cold and I like the look of the space, but sometimes the service is a little less than friendly, and I hate that they insist on keeping your I.D. at the bar if you open a tab - never heard of that practice before and it just makes me kinda nervous for some reason. The food is weird. The menu is always interesting and one of the bartenders told me the owner makes everything from scratch. I believe it, but the food I've had has been obviously heated in a microwave and came out hotter than hell in the middle and kinda soggy on the outside. I would love it if they had more snacky stuff too - I don't think most people want to eat lasagna with their happy hour pints. Overall, I'm really glad this place is in the area, even if I might do things a little differently if it were my joint. read more

Located near our place up here in PDX is The Sundown Pub. Quite convenient if you ask me. We ventured over this way a few days after moving into our place. It seems to get a constant flow of people but never gets over crowded. The bartenders have been very nice and the drinks are poured heavy to our liking. If you are there at 4:20pm every day they offer you a free drink token that can be used anytime if you buy a drink and add 1.00 extra for the token. It can be used on ANY drink of choice, well that is my understanding. We haven't had a chance to go use it yet. The place seems to get a few college kids, but not too many or maybe they are just well-behaved and I just don't notice them The food is good and the menu constantly changes. We have had the art dip which is pretty good and they usually have some sort of Yelp Deal. Right now they are doing a 10 for 20 deal. Take them all up before they all get bought. read more

I was with Matt, the below reviewer, and would like to add that I've tried a different meal on both of my 2 visits: the meat lasagna with mushrooms in the sauce, and the barbecue (smoked) beef sandwich (which beef melted in my mouth). Both were out of this world, as was the homemade chilpotle sauce which I used tortilla chips to soak up. And got more. The garlic bread with the lasagna was excellent as well. I can vouch for the Mojo Rising ale, as well as some of their other offerings to imbibe, such as hoppy Nikasi IPA. Yum! I'll be visiting many more times. I've visited the Sundown a couple of times with a co-worker who lives nearby. It's a cozy, welcoming place that I'm looking forward to returning to. We've had different bartenders on both visits, and service has been consistently low key, efficient, and friendly. The only food we've tried so far has been the artichoke dip, and it was terrific - but from the available items listed on the whiteboard, and the descriptions received from the staff, it appears that everything they serve is actually cooked with care, and not scooped out of a plastic bucket or slammed into a microwave. I'm really wishing I lived closer, so I could visit more often. P.S. - It's a strange thing to want to comment on, but the clean, homey feel extends to the restroom, which is quite possibly the nicest one I've ever seen in a bar. read more

I started coming here about once a week a couple months ago and (for the most part) I'm a fan of this place. The place is small, cozy, and has good ambiance. The people are friendly (never had problems striking up convos with them) and I believe the majority of the people that go there are regulars, giving it that "Cheers" feel to it. I can't comment on the food here being that I typically only come here for a few drinks at the end of a work week to unwind but the drinks are good and the service is above average (most of the time). I'd have to say the one complaint I have was one time I decided to come in on a Saturday night recently for a few drinks and was getting charged a $1 more per drink than all the other times I've ever came here...and I've been coming here more than a few times. It was love at first sight. I heard about this bar from the sweetheart. All I knew was that there was a super cool special that occurred at a certain time during the happy hour hours (if that made any sense at all to you) and it was close to my parents' house. And I would love it, he said. He was right. I should preface this by saying that the day he told me about this bar, I was mad at him. The day that we went to the bar, I was in a little stressed and he couldn't remember where it was so I was going into this with low expectations. This bar is so cozy. I wished it was around 10 years ago when I was still living in the neighborhood. This place is so cool. I love that there is a bookshelf full of books. There is a piano you can jam out on. There is a cozy fireplace with cozy chairs. There's board games galore. The drinks were cheap and good. You know how sometimes you meet a person and you know immediately that you're both going to get along and have an awesome time together? That was how I felt about the bartender and I never feel that way about any bartender. Ever. I was sober and thinking this. I wish this neighborhood bar was MY neighborhood bar. While browsing through the books and games, I even contemplated moving back to North Portland. This is the perfect bar for me. I'm not much of a drinker and going to a bar to drink, watch ESPN, and look at people isn't my idea of fun so it's nice that to have other fun distractions. I knocked back a couple beers and chatted with a few locals. Despite the outside appearance, this is bar has a great feel. Almost a little hideaway. Loads of bottled beer to choose from. The food here is made from scratch, and it is delicious. Many of the meats and vegetables are smoked (yum) and the rotating food menu (written on a chalkboard by the bar) means it is consistently fresh and often creative. Soups are good (I like the spicy ones) and the service is A-OK. The atmosphere will remind you of, um, the 80s. But that's alright! Great neighborhood pub! Reasonably priced but not that extensive in variety. Cocktails have a good spirit to mixer ratio overall. Very relaxed and quiet ambience with free pool on Sunday and Monday. The greatest feature would be the fact that you can go next door, a Thai Restaurant (Drunken Noodle) and order food which will be delivered to the Bar. You are allowed to consume this food at Sundown Pub. Overall a great little pub for the occasional drink with friends or your neighbors. read more

My boyfriend and I went here on a rainy Friday night and had a lovely time! I really love the divey, neighborhood feel of this place. The bartender was dreaded down to his butt and wearing black leather from head to toe, and was the sweetest bartender I have every met, even though he was the only one working there that night and was bartending and cooking! I like that the menu changes daily also. We got the art dip, which was very good. My jalapeno mac and cheese was a little too creamy for my tastes, but the BF's Thanksgiving burrito was very good! Great place, really nice bar staff, nice drink selection, awesome pudding shots (sometimes they have booze laced whipped cream in a can to top it with!!) Incredible bathrooms (not that i would ordinarily care about it, but this is a pub, and the bathrooms belong in a 4 star hotel...well almost) Only concern: What is going on with the bloody food?? Has it always been like this?? (i have only been here 2 or 3 times before).... Frogs Legs, Eel, Ducks Eggs (Deviled), Quail and other crap which might belong in some high end poofy restaurant... To me this is a huge mismatch. People who have had a few beers, a shot and a game of pool while listening to some cool live music don't generally want frogs legs!!, nor quail, duck eggs or eel.... They want well made standard fair - You know what i mean: well made bistro/pub/bar food So, i would have given the 4 stars, but they get one less for the mostly unappetizing menu and hand written (scribbled) wall board menu which doesn't really clearly show where one menu item ends, and the other one begins. But do go there and check out the pudding shots and bathrooms! ;-) read more

My wife and I decided to try this place for the first time. It was a nice cozy little place with really, really good artichoke dip/chip plate! The beer selection was nice and the drinks good, and strong too. We will go back, but the next time USE CASH. Or pay up at every new pour. They make you leave your driver's license at the bar along with your credit card if you are paying with plastic.......that is the PERFECT opportunity for Identity theft to occur. It made me feel uncomfortable. I am not inferring that the staff is all about identity theft, but someone else could use your info to commit such an act. That was a first for me, and a last. This had been my neighborhood bar for over a year. Their drinks are good, especially the pudding shots. The price is right for everything, and the atmosphere is very chill, but that doesn't mean their service is subpar in the slightest. They have a jukebox, giant jenga (read: jenga with 2-by-4s), board games, and trivia games. Meeting strangers at the bar had always been an experience. Truly worth trying. read more

Never have I been treated so poorly at a bar. I walked in with two guys and the tall male bartender who wears a backwards hat took the order of the two other people and ignored me completely. I went up to the bar and ordered a simple rum and coke which turned out to be the worst drink I've ever had. I will never go back to this bar because of the poor service I received. read more
