It's what you expect from an Irish pub. The Irish pubs in the UK have good bar food. I am glad that this location is doing that as well. I am missing a few stable (like Shepard pie) but they at least have fish and chips. That said we had the outstanding beyond teriyaki bites and the vegetarian chili. Also the cheese curds and the Hawaiian burger. The veggie bites have been so good great idea - it comes with a horseradish dip and combined this is a big delicious thing The cheese curds are perfectly fried. The chili has a bit of a kick but not too hot. And the burger was so juicy with the right amount of pineapple - sometimes the slices are too thick but this was perfect. The burger come with (not housemade) chips but I upgraded them to fries. When they came I was impressed cause the fries looked so delicious- they had been good but unfortunately not as crispy as they looked. So please make them crispy they would have been another winner! Overall a good meal and we will be happy coming back. Service - even when it was a game Sunday was quick and friendly. When you come in - you might wanna turn around and walk away - just don't do it. Lol. Your eyes will adjust to the light (it seems pretty dark in Katie's ) it's worth holding through that time lol. read more

Great bang for your buck. Looks pretty dumpy from the outside, but the inside has some nice comfy chairs. The pudding shots are surprisingly good and a unique addition to the menu. They have some TV's and pool tables as well. Good Eastside dive bar. read more

Been coming here for 20 years, always order the same thing, chicken fried steak. The staff is not that friendly if you don't order booze at 11 am, but there are plenty of folks that do and my partner is sober FWIW. Today I noticed the prices have increased by 6 bucks, which is understandable in this economy but the hash browns were burnt, eggs cold and we just decided our long run was over. read more

I live in the neighborhood and frequent Katie's about 2-3 times a week. All my friends like to join me and we even hosted a queer meetup on the patio and it was a very welcoming vibe. The bartenders are excellent and always know what I want. Hannah, Bea, Julie, Ken, Ashley and Christina are all amazing. There are some new bartenders that are just as friendly and seem to fit the vibe. I love that I can get my fave drink, cider and cbd seltzer whenever I want! The food is pretty good for a bar. The Caesar salad is delicious! Also a side of biscuits and gravy for $4! Perfect after a late night drinking with friends. I have tried almost everything on the menu and love snacking on their fries and tots. They have a cigarette machine, free pool table and video poker. Plenty of indoor seating and cozy patio with a nice breeze. I really feel at home here and lots of my friends agree. read more

It is what it is.... kind of a dive bar... but in a good way. Went on St. Patrick's 2023, early afternoon with a group of friends (previous stop what The Sandy Hut and next stop Moon & Sixpence) and we had a very good time. Bar staff was harried, it was a major Irish holiday afterall, but attentive and doing a great job. Had a Black & Tan that was kind of muddled and later a pint of Guinness that was really nice. NCAA basketball tourney on the big screens... who could ask for more. A band was setting up in the corner in front of the video poker so those were out of commission. Food looked good but we didn't partake this time. My only unusual observation as this was my first time here was that from the outside we had no idea if they place was open, closed, out of business or just plain condemned! So much graffiti and so many boarded up windows, but it was a pleasant surprise once inside. A good experience and I'm sure we'll be back again. read more

Great place to meet up with friends. It's a chill and low key spot. Drinks are reasonable and there are lot of taps with a variety of craft beer. Lots of screens for sports fans. I go when I want to hang with folks but don't want all that craziness of the city. Drinks are great! Service is great! Parking plentiful on the street. We've lived near this place for years and never gone in. Why? Well, it's mostly a sports bar and we hate sports. But I had heard from people that they serve a good breakfast. We had a friend in town and decided to give it a try. On a Tuesday morning, it was pretty quiet, with only a few scattered tables. Our server was very friendly and efficient. The ambiance is definitely ancient dive bar crossed with sports regalia. If you want a great, basic breakfast, this is the place. But you will not find much in the way of fruit or veggies. I will say, though, they have a curried tofu scramble and Beyond burgers available for vegans and vegetarians. My friend and I had the basic breakfast with over medium eggs, hash browns, bacon and a biscuit. Everything was delicious and it was a very generous serving. I'm from the south and haven't liked most of the biscuits I've had out at places in PDX, but these are great: crisp on the edges, soft inside, buttery and delish. I ended up taking a biscuit and most of my bacon home because I was so full. My spouse had the corned beef hash, which looked amazing, it was shredded corned beef on top of eggs, which were on top of potatoes. He said it was really good. Very friendly and efficient bartender served a big chicken fried steak breakfast platter for $8. Quality is average, it's good. However, the biscuits were terrible so opt for toast or muffin instead. Gravy was a tad too salty, but still yummy. The steak was pre-cut so it's not like they were hand chopping fresh meat, but this is expected from such a place. The breakfast sandwich was better than expected, try it on rye and order a side of gravy for dipping. Old-timers and lots of regulars don a dark interior. Don't concern yourself with who roasts their coffee, if the chicken is cage free, if the beef was grass fed, or where the bread yeast is milled. read more

You can spend most nights here in a quiet atmosphere around a few other mostly normal people looking to relax and down a couple. Only one pool table.... but if your into video poker they have 6 machines so you won't have to wait your turn like most places. Overall I enjoy this place because of the convenience of being right by my apt and it's not crazy. 4/5 would recommend. read more

Worst experience ever at a restaurant! We had to ask for service, were ignored, received a French dip, had to ask for au jus, never got the coffee we ordered PLUS, the cook came and took my daughter's order, after waiting ONE HOUR, went to check, the cook forgot! When the meals arrived. The Benedict was really greasy! We were never asked how our meal was, even had to ask for the check! No apologies or explanation other than " we were busy". Katie O'Brien's is a perfect little haunt. I go there for breakfast and a bloody. It's legit. I used to live within walking distance of this joint and you can't get a tastier breakfast or a better bloody buddy for the price anywhere else in town. Sure it's not pretty but it has character - legit character is what this town is lacking. You go to any "re-invented portland 'dive'" and spend twice as much for some bs aioli (which is usually mayonnaise with something mixed in) but when you go here you get food. Solid good food always a solid breakfast and a banging Rueben too. Excellent beer selection far more taps than you'd expect from a joint like this. We were neighborhood regulars until they tried to scam my partner out of over $80. The GM first told him it was the banks fault, then that it must have been a bartender error, then that she had never seen anything like it in her 25 years as a manager (so???). He had spent $14 on his card, his bank statement showed they charged him $35 TWICE. Absolutely ridiculous. He did eventually get the money back, but was never contacted about it, apologized to, or anything of the sort. It just showed back up. Horrific way of doing business. read more

One of the true old school Portland joints that doesn't seem to have been affected by the New York Times inflicted in-migration from other parts of the country. We'll see what happens as that sort creeps up Sandy. Anyway. The swiveling armchairs at the bar are a wonder and delight and probably a pretty good drunk indicator, too. I stopped by after midnight on a Saturday, I'd been pretty careful with my boozing and I was on the verge of falling asleep while leaning back. But I came here for the food. I was hungry AF and went for the double burger. Wow. It really needed a press to fit in my mouth, or I need a double hinge installed. I set one of the patties aside and dug in. Great burger. Cooked through without drying out, crispy toasted bun and good veggies. Then I asked for a fork and ate the extra patty. Just as good on its own. The fries were also great, I ate the lot of them. And if you can remember before you order a beer, they serve breakfast ALL THE TIME. The space is roomy with multiple levels and the aforementioned bar equipped with the amazing chairs. Man. We're bummed the burgers aren't made fresh and hand pressed anymore. The 1/4 lb-ers now come pre-made and frozen and are very thick and much smaller in diameter. The night we were there they ran out of regular buns but we were offered gluten-free buns at no cost. We were shocked when the plates arrived. The burgers didn't look tasty at all. We ordered one classic single and one classic double. The classic double was just ridiculous. There was no way my husband could take a bite from it and he couldn't. He removed a patty so he could eat it. Both our burgers were too done and too dry and the gluten-free buns fell apart with every bite. A good thing that came from the plates though were the fries; hot and crispy but soft in the middle. The beer, cider, and well options were also good. The food prices hadn't changed or it wasn't significant enough for us to notice. They do serve breakfast all day and have appetizers, salads, and sandwiches, too so we'll try one of those out instead another time. Happy hour is cheap with $2.50 wells and $3.50 pints every day from 3pm-6pm. The pints are normally $4.50 which is still a great price because they carry a wide variety of seasonals and 30+ drafts on tap. Street parking can be limited depending on the time you go. There's a new apartment being built right behind Katie O'Brien's, too so parking will only become more sparse I'm sure. Our return, after a very long hiatus, was not as wonderful as we had hoped but we're not giving up completely. Just because the burgers changed doesn't mean all the food did, right? read more

we've been wanting to come here for decades and finally did yesterday for lunch with a friend.....we sat in a comfortable booth and ordered...my partner and i shared a miller high life....then i noticed they had heidelberg beer from so long ago, and will order that next time...the staff person said it made a comeback, and were so happy to hear the good news....next, i had the veggie beyond burger, sub salad, and they shared a half portion of biscuits/gravy, and corned beef hash....the drink/food was excellent....they said the biscuits/gravy was just right, not too salty as other places have cooked them....the decor harkens back to old portland, and it was nostalgic....the staff, she was excellent, and funny......the prices were right on too!!!..............thx so much! read more

I used to really love this place - would come here a frequently after work with my boyfriend, but the last time we came in we got this new Lady who was wearing a "sluts rule" hat, that was extremely disappointing to say the least.. as soon as we sat down she yelled at us to put our masks on even when we still had them on? and then she snatched all of our ID's away from us and tried to say one of us was underage (the oldest of us at that) and was very rude about it she actually threw down her ID on the table and refused to take a second look and started mocking my friend When she tried showing her. When she was finally was sick of standing there she looked again and realized she was wrong. did not offer any apology and then refused to make the drinks we wanted. VERY disappointed read more

I have lived in NE Portland for the past 8 years and would go to this place on occasion. Lots of space, lots of tvs, and for the most part an efficient staff. Today, on the other hand, was a completely different story and made me feel the most uncomfortable I have ever felt in good ol' cultural-friendly Portland. I arrived at Katie O'Briens around 12:35pm for the afternoon games. A buddy had just arrived and had joined some other friends at a filled up table. I proceeded to grab a stool from the video poker area and brought it over to the table just as the waitress, Hanna, was dropping off a beer for my friend that had just arrived. I asked her, "do you mind if i perch up right here?", trying to be cognizant that I may be creating a pinch point and didn't want to be in her way if she was serving food. Hanna did not look at me to answer my question, only proceeded to give me an OK symbol with her fingers as she walked away. Fine, that was confirmation enough. Several minutes go by, and I'm obviously aware that there are tables that she is cashing out, and it may take a moment to order. More time passes, and I notice that my buddy is almost done with his first beer. She finally comes over to take his order for another, and finally asks me, "do you need something?" I asked for a beer and her next response was, "sure, I just need a card to hold for the tab." At this point I was confused. I had never been asked for my card before being ready to cash out at this establishment before. So I asked her, "did you ask any of them for their cards?" to which she replied, "no, but there is a shift change and I need a card from you." I then told her that I would just wait for a table to open and would order a beer with the next server. I obviously wasn't interested in giving any of my money to the young woman. She left the scenario confused and offered a rather sarcastic "ok". At this point I decided to go with some other friends that had just arrived to order a beer at the bar. The other woman working, Hillary, was kind at that moment and poured me a pint. It was at this point that Hanna walked up as I was walking away, and (making sure I was in ear shot?) said, "that guy was giving me attitude about his card earlier." It was at that point that I reminded her that she asked for my card, and did not ask for anyone else's at that table. I pointed out that I happened to be the only person of color at that table. Hanna decided to blow up, with many patrons around, and said "what the f***?! f*** you, you motherf***er!" I then removed myself from the situation and went outside on the patio. As I was out there the other woman, Hillary, came outside with my card and said, "we decided to close you out. We're not serving you anymore." I took it, said "that's fine," and then proceeded to sit there embarrassed around my friends trying to explain what had just happened. I went back in to try and talk to Hillary. I told her "I just want to reiterate what happened earlier with the other lady." She explained that it's their policy after 1:30 to take cards for tabs (which still didn't make sense since I was there well before then). I said, "that's fine, it would've been nice to know that as opposed to being told there was a 'shift change' as the reason." Hanna comes storming over, hearing my words, and says, "you didn't give me a chance to explain motherf***er! So enjoy that one beer and get the f*** out!" At this point I let it just be what it was, not wanting to add more tension or get to a level of anger to where I stooped to her level. I ended up staying the whole game, and my buddy's badass, problem-solver gf just ordered pitchers for the table! I normally would not post such a detailed post to Yelp, but after calling Katie O'Briens hoping to get a GM's number or email, Hillary directed me to social media about complaints. read more

Long standing dive on 28th and Sandy. This has always been a breakfast place to me. You can avoid the crowds and get no frills classic American Style breakfast on the weekends--along with a Bloody Mary if that's your Portland predilection. Full bar, of course. Cheap drinks. Some sportsbar-eque screens. A pool table. What else can I say, really? It's a dive with all that that portends. If you love giants chicken wings, you must come here! The wings are sauced, they're monstrous, they're cooked well! The drinks are comparable in prices at other bars. The back patio is small but facilitates the needs of smokers. The burgers will not disappoint. I like to come here to relax in the bar's lounge chairs or get down on some pool. It's got a neighborhood feel where the locals regularly attend. It's a place where they'll know your name. Don't let that get to'ya... The service is not biased. There are tons of booths, pool (one table) and TVs galore. I've seen live music, unexpectedly. The establishment is large enough to invite a large group of your friends to enjoy a night of food, drinks and laughs or drunken conversations - however ya'll roll. Pretty good neighborhood joint - serving breakfast, AND hash browns. And I love me some hash browns, in fact, if a place doesn't have them - I just don't want to try it. Overall the food was decent - took quite awhile to get it, and that can be a bummer if you're starving. We were bar hopping and this was our final destination as we liked the cool vibe and atmosphere of this bar so we settled down here. The bar tender was really cool and talked with us for a bit about the city. She suggested a few places we see in portland before we leave. Drinks are so cheap and taste good. I ordered a Mai tai and it was sweet but strong, just the way I like. There are pool tables, Irish pub feel. Cool board like meeting chairs at the bar, they lean back and it's a nice change from your typical bar stool. The patio was really cool and music was great!
