Visited before and had the buttered tarts which their butter tarts are delicious and apparently the owner or the chef is Canadian so believe me, she knows how to make great butter tarts. If you've never had one, you owe it to yourself to try one went again this last week and wanted a butter tart unfortunately they were out so I settled for a brownie that I split with my friend. The brownie was big enough for us to have basically three serving as we each had a piece and then had a piece for later absolutely delicious. Very cute and bright bakery/cafe in the heart of Idyllwild. We stopped by for some coffee and pastries. Variety was ok, nothing really stood out for me, pretty standard selection of a few typical pastries like cinnamon roll, muffin and chocolate croissant. Coffee was good and strong. Looking at all the food photos for this adorable establishment, I regret not coming back for actual food however, it is as if this place read my mind. We arrived to town and had already eating breakfast on the road, naturally we were craving something sweet. This place was calling our name...I mean the gorgeous bright wall art and exterior..how can you not?!?! Low and behold...they have LEMON BARS. If you know me, I am very picky when it comes to what sweets and treats I put into my temple..but if a place offers a LEMON BAR, well that's in my top 3. We must try. This review is really just for the sweet treats and if you're like me and you go to a food place reviews and type in the search bar: LEMON BAR, walahh, I have answered your wishes! Absolutely delicious, creamy, tart but sweet at same time, powdered frosting added a nice traditional after note. So rich and fulfilling. BUT LIGHT AND AIRY at same time. Secondly, the cinnamon roll. How could you not, again LOL. Both desserts were exceptional and now I want to go back just to try all the food. Idyllwild DELIVERS when it comes to GOOD QUALITY FOOD, unique, cozy home made goodies and just exceptional services. Baked goods taste good at any time of the day. It's right on the busy town strip. We tried a new spot on one of our visits there yesterday. Follow the signs to the sunflower Cafe and we're excited to try something off the lunch menu as it had switched over from breakfast. This was explained to us as we were discussing what breakfast items we would be ordering which was fine because we wouldn't want to waste time picking something just to have to be told at the register if they were no longer serving breakfast. He ended up ordering a grilled cheese sandwich, a tomato soup, a chicken pot pie and an ice carbonated beverage. Almost $40 for this! The soup cup was 2/3 full and he said more like marinara than what it was supposed to be, bisque. When she handed me the cold pot pie in a plastic container I asked if she could heat it up and she said no because it was a grab-and-go item. I was told this after I had already paid. It would make sense that if I order food to be consumed on the spot, you would mention that the pot pie would be cold in which case I would have ordered something else. Additionally, I understand that this is a touristy spot and prices have been going up everywhere, but $40? I literally had dinner down the street at Manzanita and for $5 more we got three asada tacos, a street corn, and a chicken enchilada plate with rice and beans. That does not sit right Also, I made a comment about this in answer to how everything was on the email receipt I got and I got a very quick response about how it was my fault for not saying something before paying the pot pie when it was indeed not my fault. She told me after the fact and I didn't feel like being a jerk and having her refund me the pot pie. Time for sass but not much for customer service. First and last time. read more

I would put zero stars, however, that's not an option. We entered the cafe excited to try the local bakery in town and was met with terrible service. We ordered three iced matchas and they were all equally as bad as the next one. When one matcha was requested with an accommodation, we were met with a passive aggressive tone and comment stating the order was "complicated". I have never been met such hostility covered in a passive aggressive tone in this beautiful town. On top of the terrible service, they had us wait an estimated 15 minutes for a ready cherry danish. It's unfortunate that we were met with this unpleasant and unprofessional interaction at this bakery when this town is so pleasant and welcoming. Please see the picture of the so-called "matcha". I had a cold brew with almond milk and my husband had a hot drip coffee. Both hit the spot! I had the Toasted Western breakfast sandwich on wheat bread. It comes with egg, ham and bell peppers and I added cheddar cheese. We shared the lemon danish. And my husband got the breakfast burrito with sausage. Everything hit the spot! The best thing about this space is the huge outdoor seating area out back. There are tons of tables, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, etc. all nestled in the trees. If you visit Idyllwild and you don't make a trip (or two) to The Sunflower, you are cheating yourself. Janie and her team are wonderful - that goes without saying! But the food is amazing! I am a HUGE fan of her French pastries for anytime of the day really. Pies are to die for. And the cookies.... So good. So many options! I like to grab a coffee and a pastry and sit outside in one of the Adirondack chairs and just enjoy the quiet and the view amongst the little forest of manzanitas. I visited three times and decided I will not return: The coffee tasted like dishwater..not sure that they know how to make a decent cup of coffee or possibly their machine needs to be cleaned. The deflated croissants sadly looked worse than the ones at the supermarket. They are supposed to look crispy and puffy. These definately don't make my mouth water, as they should if the work is put into them . I know when a croissant is made just right and theirs by far are not. Is the loaf of bread brought in frozen and baked there? I have suspicion that certain items are brought in and just heated up.
