Friends getting ready to depart after beer and lunch.

Great meeting place in Belgrade, especially if you want to watch a football game. We needed a mid point with friends and this was perfect. A varied menu that satisfied everyone.

    Two eggs, bacon, toast

Food was really good. We had breakfast. Service was great. Ambiance was of a local diner in rural Maine. We enjoyed listening to the locals.

What's in this photo? Sadness and mediocrity.

Some locals say it's the best food in town, they might be right because it's the only food. Each visit gets progressively worse-worse service and worse food. If there is a manager, he/she is out-to-lunch (and while you're there could you bring us back some good food?) The last trip, and I mean last, was a Sunday evening with less than half the full restaurant. It took 20 minutes to get a bottle of wine and an iced tea. The rest of the drinks, a soda and glass of water, would make their way to the table about 10 minutes later. 30 minutes to order and after being there an hour the 'meal' finally arrived. I thought I'd play it safe with nachos, however, I was wrong. The plate arrived with a dry pile of chips and what had been chicken pieces at some point. There was no point in sending it back, I didn't have another hour to wait. I will say, the waitress was smart enough to not ask how any of our meals were. I've heard people call this place 'the sunset swill' and I would agree with that. Eat at your own risk.

Of the limited options for lunch in this little town, we're glad we went with Sunset Grill. It's diner food that is quite good and feels like a place locals would hang out. My bacon mushroom Swiss burger was very respectable. You can see in my photos that this is no pre-frozen burger. Big, perfectly cooked rare, and tasty toppings. The seasoned curly fries are yummy. My husband's beans and dogs were good, tasty Maine hot dogs with crisp casings. Fish chowder had a big piece of haddock, lots of potatoes and celery, and was savory and good.

Not a bad little dive in bar restaurant located in a charming little town of Belgrade. I had the Steak Bomb sandwich on a gluten free bun.

Fried clams were well done, cold and crispy. Not good. This place used to be good. Just a local bar now.

The experience stands out in my memory as a one of the top dining experiences of my life. Last night we came back again and this time dined with friends and the entirety of the service was no less impressive as it was last year. The small staff greets you warmly the moment you arrive and you quickly realize this isn't going to be a typical dining experience. They are only open for service Friday and Saturday and the whole experience lasts approximately 3-4 hours. With only one seating per evening, the focus is on the guest and their enjoyment versus trying to get you out the door. I was concerned when I learned the meal was vegetarian but was far from disappointed. The 6 courses were presented beautifully and so full of incredible flavors and textures that the meat was not missed from my plate. My stomach was definitely not still grumbling when the night was over...the portions were perfectly sized and allowed me to enjoy every savory bite. As far as the atmosphere goes; it is perfect for its "off the beaten path" location. Tucked away in the woods, it matches rustic cabin and elegance brilliantly. Winding paths from the parking lot and to the restroom add to the magic. Even an outdoor gathering area with open fire pits burning bright beckon you to sit and enjoy the moment. This is possibly the most romantic location for dining in Maine. Every single detail is full of warmth and welcoming. My only recommendation is that YOU make your reservation now and give Rooted a try!

Nonetheless, we heard good things about the food so I thought we'd give it a try. We were greeted right away by the bartender who couldn't have been nicer. She was a delightful lady and served us also. I ordered the French onion soup and the bacon and Gouda mac & cheese. My husband had the state fair sausage sandwich. The food was really excellent. I was quite surprised. The cook brought it out and he was a very pleasant gentleman. The French onion soup had a deep rich broth that was really delicious. The bacon and Gouda mac & cheese had a very rich flavor of Gouda cheese, which was wonderful, but a very heavy meal which I couldn't eat much of because I'm such a lightweight. My husband enjoyed the state fair sausage sandwich and said he would order it again. The tavern is right on the river literally and you can sit outside and watch the river go by which is very charming. It was a very hot day so my husband and I decided to sit inside and the only choice inside was either a barstool or a very hard bench, which is the only reason I didn't give this restaurant five stars. If I had a nice soft, comfy booth I would've been perfectly happy. Overall it was a very good experience and I definitely would consider going back.
