I brought my sister here to celebrate her 21st birthday and introduce her to a few drinks. Since she's new to drinking, she wasn't a fan of the first cocktail she ordered. Instead of just leaving it at that, our server took the time to ask what she liked and didn't like, relayed those notes to the bartender, and together they created a drink that was absolutely perfect for her. While we were disappointed that they would start serving lunch at 1, we ended up ordering from the brunch menu (which was nothing to sneeze at). My order : Fish and chips : perfect crunch from the very light batter, and while I am not the biggest fan of tartar sauce, I made sure to mop up every drop using the fries when my fish was done. This was my first time to The Surf Club since the new owners took over Hello Betty and renamed it. Stupid me thought it would've improved but basically it's worse than it was, how do you change a broken establishment if the same manager works there? We sat on the roof top, tried finding a clean table and there were none, the tables hadn't been bussed, they were filthy, and it looked like the chairs and not been ever wiped down. There was food and trash all over the floor, the booth seats were filthy and were setup to far on each side from a table. You have to go to the bar to order everything and if you're lucky and there aren't 10 people or more waiting to order. They messed up on my order and didn't include anything lettuce, tomato, or onion on it which it comes with. Now a hamburger or sandwich plate includes a side, my friend ordered onion rings and they charged an extra $6 to replace the fries that are already included, that's crazy! On top of what we ordered they charged a 5% surcharge!!! They didn't have it anywhere on the menu that they charge a surcharge, so they just sneak it on the bill and hope a person doesn't see it, which I didn't for many days because I would never eat there then. Bathrooms are the worst, toilet paper and seat covers all over the floors, overflowing trash cans, no soap and of course NO paper towels. Absolutely no one monitors the bathrooms, no one buses the tables and cleans them or the chairs and floor. You can definitely do better elsewhere it's not worth it. Why should a patron have to pay a 5% surcharge on top of the total bill for the employees to do their jobs, evidently they're not doing it. read more

Improve your customer service. The moment a customer walks into your establishment, they should at least be acknowledged. A simple "Hello, welcome in!" or "Hi, we'll be right with you!" goes a long way. My wife and I stopped by looking forward to enjoying drinks and food. Instead, we stood there while three different employees walked by without acknowledging us once. We eventually walked up to the bar ourselves to order drinks and patiently waited for the bartender. She finished closing out another customer's tab, which was completely understandable. However, as we continued waiting, another customer walked up beside my wife, and the bartender immediately took that person's order without ever acknowledging us. That was the final straw. We walked out and went next door. The difference was immediate. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with, "Hello, welcome in!" The bartender followed with, "Hi! How can I help you? Will you be having food, drinks, or both?" That's how you make guests feel valued. There are countless places throughout San Diego County where people can spend their money on food and drinks. Customer service is often the deciding factor in whether someone returns. Unfortunately, you lost two customers before we even had the chance to order. I would encourage management to invest more in customer service training. Greeting guests, acknowledging their presence, and serving people in the order they arrive are basic hospitality standards. Improving those areas would not only help retain customers but would likely improve your Yelp rating as well. Do better. read more

We came here at the beginning of June with a big group and it was solid! They took reservations which we loved and was so helpful for our group. We sat near the little arcade area which was perfect because there was a combination of 5 toddlers/kids. FOOD Chips, Salsa, Guac and Queso - The chips were a bit stale and the dips were mediocre. Carne Asada Fries - Overall great flavor. Fries were cooked well and not soggy. They held up with all of the toppings. The meat was a tad chewy but it was fine. Calamari - Nothing outstanding about this dish. The breading could have been crispier. Smash Burger - Cannot say this was a favorite. It was a bit dry. I come here to dance sometimes on a Friday night. They have a live band from 6 to 9 pm upstairs at their rooftop lounge. The pro is that there is no cover charge and they don't make you buy food to sit down at a table. The con is that it's only 6 to 9. At present, there is a paid parking lot across the street for $5. The food was very disappointing. It was very noisy and the service was quite slow. I ordered a Chicken Caesar Wrap and it tasted terrible, very spicy. I have eaten chicken ceaser wraps often at a variety of restaurants, but never tasted one quite like this. I ordered a cheese quesadilla instead, buy when it came time to pay, I thought I should not have been charged for the wrap and I told the server that. The manager said he had to charge me 50%. Awkwardly half empty dirty looking place with TERRIBLE FOOD but great service. Weird I know.... Anyway, we all got sick from the food. The funny thing is when we got our food, both my wife and I looked at each-other thinking "this looks old". We ate it anyway because we wanted to give it a shot. The scary thing is both my daughters took like 2 bites each of the food and still got sick. . . In full transparency, this place looks like it will be out of business in the near future. While the music was cool, the upstairs menu has less options so we opted for the downstairs and found a spot on the outside bar. They have tons of TVs and had the game on. We ended up having the dirty fries with carnitas and an order of buffalo wings. The wings were a good size and cooked well. Sauce was not very spicy but did have the buffalo flavor. Fries were good and I like the queso. I definitely want to try it with the carne asada. I also learned that you can sub fries for chips and make it nachos. Yum. We came here to support Gone Blonde playing at this venue. Their music is fun and gives a good vibe. It's always a blast to dance. What really topped it off was the amazing service at this venue! June helped us at the bar and Andrew was a waiter. Both were very knowledgeable about the drinks and food that they offered and neither disappointed. Wine was good, beer was good and the Ahi Poke Bowl was so good and so was the arugula salad. Kid friendly place as well, which really helped for a night out with the family. We went to The Surf Club for happy hour with our Pilates group on a Friday night. The bar was upstairs was wasn't open when we got there and we arrived just a little bit past 5 PM. So we had to wait about 15 minutes. Not sure what's up with the five percent surcharge on my bill?!?!?!?! So that would add to my cost of my happy hour prices. They didn't tell me there was a surcharge. Just want you to be aware. The food was good. I ordered carne Asada tacos that was given fish tacos, so they let them know I did order Carne Asada not fish and they did redo my order. The music was good and the patio got very busy upstairs. Came here for the first time for brunch. I did the bottomless mimosas and ordered their breakfast burrito. Bottomless mimosas were the best part. The breakfast burrito I ordered was mostly potatoes and barely any egg. It has some pico and crema but the amount of potatoes dried the whole burrito out. I give it 4/10. The service was okay. The male server I had was not very friendly. He did the bare minimum for customer service not even a smile actually.
