From the moment we arrived, service was impeccable. The front desk staff & the restaurant servers all made us feel like we were home. Our naturally lit, cozy room was beautifully appointed; even the robes were deliciously soft. Our first night, we ordered 3 entrees and each voted for different favorites (always a good sign). The ambiance was fantastic, the cocktails were excellent, and the food was truly outstanding. Our experience at dinner prompted our decision to stay in for breakfast and for lunch the following day - and every single dish was stunning. In fact, we even returned, post check-out, for a repeat of the veggie bowl with chicken (a must). The VIEW: imagine twinkling sunshine, a lineup of surfers catching perfect waves, the Malibu pier...all while sipping their signature drink - The Endless Summer. Simply put, heaven. Their tiny gift shop has such a great selection of candles (our favorite), clothing, prints, and essential oils. Sunscreen too, if needed. We went home with 5 candles, 2 sweatshirts and the most adorable print. The complimentary morning coffee and electric car charging were unexpected, delightful touches. After checking out, we were informed of a forgotten item via chat - they even offered to ship it to us, if we weren't able to return in-person. We were driving by on our first trip down PCH since the fires. We stopped by the Surfrider on a whim to check it out, not knowing what to expect. On walking in, a very friendly receptionist offered to take us on a tour that ended at their rooftop bar. The suns warmth and mellow surf music brought me back to the laid back California of the 70s, where you could simply enjoy the vibe and everyone was friendly. Ordered local NA beer and shared a steak taco while enjoying the dead on ocean and pier view. Remarkably, the place was not crowded. Frankly, haven't felt so mellow in years. Still epic five years after last visit. I was in town for a business meeting at nearby Pepperdine and decided to splurge on Friday night stay after meeting concluded. By splurge, I mean spend the most money I have ever spent for one night stay. As our reservation was messed up on Priceline (my fault not theirs), the front desk manager upgraded us to the Malibu suite. wow!!!!! I think this was the most. As a surfer, with Malibu 1st point right out the front, this hotel is the one. I love this hotel and had a fun surf front at Malibu and enjoyed the community for a quick 24 hour R&R. We were in Southern CA for my brother's wedding and decided to stay one more night. We looked around online and decided on Surfrider for one night. The hotel is small and so modern and clean, streamlined. Cory, at the front desk was so kind, helpful and warm! Same with Coco at their rooftop bar and restaurant. The food was delicious! Oh, and don't get me started on how refreshing and unique the drink was that Coco made called The Endless Summer (I apparently forgot to take a picture of this drink)! The hotel is across the street from a sunny and welcoming pier, and of course, views of the shimmering ocean. The hotel is a bit pricey, but it is Malibu, CA, after all. It was worth it, we just wish we could have stayed longer than one night. read more

Surfrider Malibu is a dreamy, quaint boutique hotel in Malibu. Reception area is well done with easy check in process, friendly/helpful staff who walk you to your room and make sure you are settled in. Take your coffee card back to the reception area and the next morning they bring you your free coffee delivery made to order. After check in, had to go straight up to the rooftop deck for moonlit cocktails and cookies and milk...yum!! The accommodations are fantastic. We stayed in the "Surfer's Hideout" which was lovely albeit as they warned there was definitely kitchen noise above us in early morning. That said it was a nice accommodation with everything we needed, nice decor, and ultimately a good night sleep at an amazing spot on PCH across from the Malibu pier, Surfrider Beach, and only 1/2 mile beautiful stroll to the Malibu Country Mart. There are definitely other much more posh rooms available if you desire, but would definitely book ahead of time for those ones (we were lucky to get our room last minute). If you are going to go surfing, they have boards and SUP available. Once you return they have a nice outdoor shower to rinse off. Check out is at 11am but they were very happy to have us keep our car parked until at least 3pm and to enjoy their amenities the remainder of the day (rooftop deck, surf equipment and outdoor shower, etc). It was definitely the little staycation that we needed and truly look forward to coming back sometime soon. read more

We got charged $150 just to have dinner there. We called twice before making the reservation to ensure that it was only a "no-show fee" which we were told two separate times before joining. Upon getting our check and noticing the two charges, one for drinks and another for $150, I asked the manager what it was. She notified me that the charge for $150 was for the reservation (even though we were assured twice that we would only get charged that if we no-showed). The manager said it was their first day of implementing the new system and would refund us the $150 due to miscommunication. The cancellation window is 1 week! We booked a quick trip to Malibu. We had never stayed here. I thought the Surfrider looked fun. I booked 2 nights and then decided to book one more night. We were going to need to move rooms for the third night. I changed my mind and wanted to cancel. They would not allow us to cancel the third night. Wow! The hotel is very small with thin walls. You can hear the people next door. You can hear the traffic on Hwy 1. Our room was below the roof top bar. You could hear them dragging things around up there. There is no closet. There is no ironing board or iron. They ask you to sign a 2 page agreement that you will be fined for various reasons such checking out late. It is a place where there are no pluses for you just negatives. The rooftop bar service was terrible. There were 5 people "working " but they never came by to ask how we were doing. My husband had to go over to order. Then go back and get the napkin and silverware. Then go ask for an umbrella. We tried asking for dessert delivery. The phone rang and rang. Finally they answered but hung up before we asked for water. In general this place is way overpriced and under serviced. You will regret staying here. I would never recommend it. read more

I've been coming to The Surfrider for the past three years for my birthday as well as the occasional spontaneous staycation, but ever since Casetta Group took over management in Sept. 2023 and began focusing more on influencer marketing, the hotel has lost a lot of its charm. That being said, it obviously has held a special place in my heart (hence why it pains me to write this), so I'll start with some positives: Communications: You can text the front desk for any requests and room service, which is massively convenient. The room: Each room I've stayed in has been cozy, inviting, and outfitted with great amenities like Grown Alchemist products and beach towels and a beach bag for guests to use. The linens are so incredible that I've purchased the same set for my own home. As other reviewers have pointed out, the walls are thin and you can't escape the noise from the highway, but I've never minded -- if you do, however, there are earplugs and even a white noise machine in the room for your use. Morning coffee service: You can fill out a coffee card each night for free coffees to be delivered to your room in the morning. Such a special touch! The rooftop: The Surfrider has the best rooftop view in Malibu (even better than Soho House Malibu, IMO). If you arrive early, you can check in and leave your bags downstairs and enjoy the rooftop, and you can even enjoy the rooftop for the rest of the day after you check out. Front desk staff: The staff at reception went above and beyond. In previous years, one amenity included was a scented room spray in each room; on this trip, I was told via text that they've done away with sprays in the room as of earlier this week, but would be selling them for $65. When I expressed disappointment, the staff offered to have me pick up a bottle for the room for the remainder of the trip, and I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness. As for the negatives, I'd say it was the overall service. A week and a half before my visit, the hotel reached out to inform us that there would be kitchen renovations during the time we'd be there, and as such, there would be a limited menu of just light bites during the day. While this isn't a huge deal, it wasn't listed on the website, and I would have liked to have had this in consideration before booking. It would also have been nice to receive some kind of food/beverage credit for the inconvenience if they weren't able to notify earlier. While everyone working the front desk was lovely, the service on the rooftop restaurant during this stay left a lot to be desired. With the exception of one time, each time I visited the rooftop throughout a 2 nights/3 day stay, the staff wouldn't acknowledge me unless I chased them down. On one occasion, I was alone on the rooftop, and a couple came up after me and were immediately tended to and served mocktails and menus before I was able to flag someone to acknowledge me. When we tried to order room service one night, we were told the two items we wanted weren't available (it seems the menus on the roof and the room are different, and the ones in the room weren't updated), so we ended up DoorDashing from a nearby restaurant. On the second night, we ordered the items that were available, but the pappardelle pasta with Italian sausage that my friend ordered came with no sausage or sauce, so we had to notify the front desk and wait while they re-made the dish. On the last morning before checkout, I sat on the roof for 30 minutes and no one stopped by to offer any menus or water, so I gave up on breakfast and left. As another reviewer mentioned, they don't do anything special like a glass of bubbly for birthdays or anniversaries, you're just given the option to purchase things to be put in your room ($60 for a batch of 3 servings of cocktails, etc). This felt more understandable when they were a smaller operation, but now that they've been taken over by a hospitality group, it feels a little egregious. Overall, it's a nice place with a great location, but has gone on the decline since last year. I'd be open to trying another stay here at some point (and would update my review if I ever did), but it feels like it might be time to move on to other hotels in the area, especially for the price. My feedback would be to focus less on influencers and more on improving overall experiences for all guests. read more

The hotel itself is just "OK", but I was really upset with the value. My stay (with all the hidden fees like the "wellness fee") ended up being over $900/night, which is even more expensive than the Ritz Carlton in Tokyo. That would be fine if the location was indeed stellar, but that was also pretty mediocre. It's next to a Jack in the Box and a noisy highway. There were also ants in my room, and the walls are paper thin. Absolutely not a $900/night value, not even a $400/night value in my experience. The staff is nice, and the rooftop restaurant is cool also, but it doesn't really make up for it in my mind. If you're looking for a peaceful "Malibu getaway", then this place ain't it. If you're a very cash rich surfer who needs close access to the beach (if you don't mind crossing PCH), then this might be a good place for you. read more

An updated hotel with an excellent view, rooftop bar, and very comfortable rooms with a balcony! You can't get much better than this hotel right off the PCH and excellent views of Santa Monica and the L.A. basin... The service was superb and the hotel had a little something that reminded me of a movie from the 60's. The dinner was also very good as I had the meatballs with bone marrow...delicious and much better than expected. We also had the ceviche appetizer that was also superb. The only part that was probably more of a comment than a complaint is that it is right off the PCH so the traffic is what it is. I mean, there is no way around it because this road cuts through the Mountains there and it's literally right off the shoreline up to Ventura. Not really sure where Malibu proper starts or ends but it's all good on the shoreline and if you're looking for something 'better' then you're just splitting hairs! Music with loud bass blaring through the next door room, we can hear conversations like as if we were right in front of them; And, from the room upstairs, non-stop walking.. all night and all morning? This was my third time returning to Surfrider, but unfortunately, it might be the last. There's much to love here, but I think the quality has gone downhill while the prices have risen. THE GOOD: The rooftop is spectacular, so cozy, the views are incredible. You can sit here for hours enjoying the waves and the sun. The beds and linens are so comfortable. The Surfrider beach is iconic and it's so fun to be close to it and get to watch all the surfers come and go. Their coffee service in the morning is a unique touch and always sets the day off right. They're always burning a candle in the lobby that smells incredible and I love their merchandise and little welcome area. You do feel like it's your own beach house. THE BAD: My first interaction with Surfrider started off rocky because I contacted them in advance of my first stay in 2022 to request a plus-size robe. A robe in the room is a cornerstone amenity for high-quality hotels like the Surfrider, and I already know as a plus-size traveler that I need to ask for the appropriate size ahead of time. I always try to do so well in advance so that I don't put the hotel on the spot. I typically get one of two responses: (1) the hotel says no problem, they'll have an appropriately sized robe in the room for me (because they already do this). Or (2) they apologize because they don't currently have extended sizes in their stock, but they say they will add to their inventory for the future. Even if they don't stock it in time for my stay, it makes me happy to know that the next guest won't have to advocate to get a robe that fits. But the Surfrider's response was not great. They basically just said: "Sorry, we have nothing to fit you." Mmkay! When I showed up, the views were spectacular and the rooms were so lovely that I was able to forget all about this first interaction and just really enjoy the time there. That first stay in 2022 was awesome. My next stay there in 2023 was also great, but I did notice some wear and tear on the rooms, such as marks on the walls and cup rings on the tables. But that seemed like no big deal. This year, I returned again with my friend for her birthday, but unfortunately several things were not great. Service on the roof was slow, and they had a limited menu this time compared to the previous two stays. Information about this limited menu wasn't on the website and was emailed to us. When she did go for a bite, my friend didn't receive service on the roof for over 20 minutes and ended up leaving. The rooms showed more extensive wear and tear this time, with a number of marks and scuffs on the walls and damaged wood on the tables and in the bathroom. We ordered room service on our last night, and my Italian sausage pasta dish was served with no meat or sauce (see photo). They were very kind about replacing it, but it took an additional 30 minutes to get a correct dish. Little touches like room spray in the room were gone. For the price, unfortunately, I don't think the quality of service and accommodations are there anymore. I'd love to be wrong and hope to see things turn around! read more

While I absolutely adored the aesthetics of this place, the in room experience was a bit of a let down for me for what we paid. You couldn't hear the traffic on pch until about 10pm, but from that point until 2am it was nonstop speedsters racing around every curve making it impossible to sleep. If I stayed here again I definitely would skip paying extra for an ocean view room and hope the back side is a little quieter. We stayed in the Pacific and its also showing a bit of unexpected wear and tear. So for the room itself I'd only give this place 3 stars - it for sure was not a great value! But onto the better things, the best part of staying here is by far the rooftop restaurant experience which was most of the reason I went through with booking this place. We found out upon arrival that they had lost the ability to serve hot food for the time being and I was so bummed to find this out AFTER arrival, especially bc we were planning on celebrating our 10 year anniversary up there for our one night in town, and it was a chilly night, so cold food didn't sound super appealing. Luckily the cold offerings we tried were still incredible (halibut ceviche and burrata with sourdough) and we had the fires/heaters, blankets, and hot tea to stay warm with. The service was super friendly which is not always the case at hip boutique hotels. Overall I was super pleasantly surprised by the coziness and delectability of the "no hot food" dining experience, so I'm so thankful we stuck with our original plan of eating up there. I'd still stay here again if I returned to town, but one night only on the back side, just to get to go back to that roof! read more

Use Caution Booking This Hotel: I'm sure this is a beautiful hotel with a top notch restaurant. Unfortunately we couldn't experience any of it and lost money due to their rigid cancellation policy. My husband and I were literally driving up to the hotel for our anniversary (an hour into our drive), planning to drop our kids and puppy off at my mom's when we got a call from my mom saying she got sick and couldn't watch the kids. My sister, who was our plan B to watch the kids and dog, also got sick. While we could've quickly found a pet boarding hotel to drop our dog off on the way to the hotel (super not ideal because she's a puppy), the person I spoke to told us they didn't have any rollaway beds on site nor a ton of space for a rollaway bed/air mattress if we brought one for our kids. At this point, we felt like it wasn't in our cards to even make the 3 hour drive up since we didn't have a solid place to take our puppy or our kids, we called the manager and asked if we could reschedule our visit or get some refund...she flat out said "No" and said they have a very strict 7 day cancellation policy. I asked to speak to her boss or send her boss an email, she said that she couldn't give me her email address, but that she'd try to text the general manager but that she will likely say No as well. So I asked for the contact info of the hotel owners/company to plead our case, but she said she wasn't at liberty to give me any contact information. She did offer 1) for me to get a second room to accommodate our kids (which for over $700/night, it's not worth it) or 2) to try to resell the hotel room online but said that there was a slim chance someone would take it this late in the day. She also said they are a small hotel and that our reservation probably prevented someone from reserving the room, but obviously they had a room available (the one they offered to us for our kids!), so we didn't prevent anyone from reserving the room because there was still availability! Given that this was a family emergency and a very extreme and rare circumstance, I was blown away by their lack of consideration or accommodation. I was appalled that the manager didn't think the management company would even bother to hear our case. Customer service is absolutely lacking. It's not like we were trying to scam the hotel...we were literally driving to the hotel with a packed car. We ended up taking the $ loss, turning around and going home. Please use caution when you book a room at this hotel because their cancellation policy is absolutely terrible. read more

Wow! This is what I imagined a hotel to be like in Malibu. Everything was top notch from the staff to the food to the drinks. Huge shout out to all the amazing staff that keep this place running. You were all so kind, accommodating and made sure the place looked immaculate. The reception area was really cute with this library up on the second floor. The rooms were updated with some really nice finishes. The rooftop deck just had this picturesque view of the ocean that you're not going to find at a lot of places. I could have easily stayed here a few more nights if I had the time. I ended up buying some merch from their hotel because I liked the place so much and the quality of the clothing was amazing (unfortunately I lost the shirt already) but I'll get another one when I come back. We were fortunate enough to spend our anniversary at the Surfridr Hotel in Malibu. The general manager, Arielle, and the entire staff made our experience unbelievably special and we were treated exceptionally. When we checked into our room, they had champagne on ice as well as a hand written note next to the bottle congratulating us on our 1 year. The rooftop bar and restaurant was amazing with views of the ocean as well as great food and cocktails. By the end, we were friends with all the different staff members who were taking care of us. We were so close to all the great spots in Malibu and we were able to use the longboards and wetsuits from the Surfrider and surf right across the street. Though expensive, the food was delicious. We had absolutely nothing wrong with our stay, and the service was incredibly friendly. We came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the Surfrider was just about perfect for us! Location was just across the street from the beach and pier. We had dinner reservations at Nobu and were able to easily walk there. The room was clean and bed was comfortable (hurray for an actual duvet cover!) with so many beautiful touches from the artisan soap in the bathroom to the library area where you can chill out to the rooftop deck where they will make you a stellar cocktail or pour you a really great glass of wine and bring you a blanket and pull up a heater for you if it gets chilly and play some perfect 60s beach tunes (Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk," Brenton Wood's "The Oogum Boogum Song") like they could read your mind. Service was warm and friendly throughout our stay. Breakfast was a must-do (we tried the breakfast burrito with sausage and the avocado smash) up on the rooftop deck. Surfrider has been on my list for ages. I'm a boutique hotel snob and love places that just get the vibe right and this curation was spot on. Everything embodies that casual cool but modern surf aesthetic. The design itself is a combination of muted Greys, natural woods, creamy whites and green plants. I live in la but came here on a staycation. Tbh, barely left the entire weekend. I held fort up on the roof deck which is only open to those staying at the hotel and their guests. Wow! We didn't expect our hotel food to be this amazing!! we had the yogurt with berries, baked eggs, and breakfast burrito. The breakfast burrito is so big and yummy. It had eggs, rice, beans, avocado and pico de gallo sauce on the side. Very filling. The baked egg with tomato sauce base, eggs with melted cheese. Perfect toast on the side to enjoy the dish with. The bowl of yogurt with coconut yogurt, fresh berries, chia seeds, coconut flakes. And can I just say! The tastiest strawberries. I am honestly surprised that there are so few reviews. Let me tell you what... this place was absolutely amazing. The rooms were perfect and the service was top notch. Every server was amazing but Lucy and Justice made our whole trip. Especially Lucy. The only thing I have negative to say was the manager Scully. He was extremely dismissive and told our server to stop talking to us. This was unfortunate because the employees really made the trip.
