Half eaten burrito as a bowl
    Trish H.

Stopped in for lunch. Spouse had one of the three taco orders (chicken tinga) while I had the TTS burrito as a bowl (al pastor). I also had a spicy paloma to drink. Decor is peppy, not too loud, lots of servers visible and plenty of diners around but it's still easy to hold a conversation. There is a separate room where only one diner was seated reading a newspaper where the music was louder. Lighting is bright. Timing of food and drink was great, service very friendly in an authentic way, definitely not perfunctory. Dishes were excellent, lots of thinly sliced veg and attractive garnish along with the meats selected; very tasty. Spicy paloma was not that spicy but light and refreshing. Wish I had time to try the tortilla soup but we needed to get to the Apple store. Bill was around $60 before tip. Will definitely return to try soup and a margarita!

Although I needed to try too many things on the menu so it was expensive lol. They have amazing tacos and home made guac/salsa/chips. The chips are definitely home made because they have that authentic taste. I tried the fish tacos which I really enjoyed. I think overall though my favourite thing on the menu was definitely the guacamole! Yummy! We didn't have to wait for a seat or anything even though it was busy so that was nice. It also has a good neighbourhood vibe where everyone knows each other and its very homey and nice. I also love the little flags they give! I'll definitely be back!

I was very surprised to see that it was fairly empty on a Friday night (not sure if this is the norm). Despite that they had the music going on full blast. The restaurant is fully decorated with Mexican decor. I noticed that they also had a large party room with a stage and a dance floor. I'm guessing this is used for private bookings. The service is very casual. Once you are ready to order you go up to the front to put in your order and pay. A staff member will deliver the food to your table. Although the staff were very kind and friendly, we did notice that once the food arrived, no one came by to check on us. We were never once offered a water refill nor were our empty dishes cleared even though we had long finished our meal. I ordered the fish tacos and our table got salsa and guacamole to share. The guacamole was very fresh and tasty, we all enjoyed it. The salsa was watery so we didn't enjoy it as much. The chips were delicious but a little over baked. The tacos were absolutely delicious and I would get them again. I added some of the fixings from their toppings bar which made it even better. The portions are great for the price. 4 tacos for $17! Can't beat that. We were all stuffed by the end of the night. It would be nice if you were allowed to mix flavours though like maybe 2 of each.

The coral door, the papel picado dancing in the windows, the warm glow from within -- it pulls you in before you've even decided to stop. I came for a drink and left utterly charmed. The tamarind passion fruit cocktail arrived in a stunning geometric cut glass, beautifully presented, and at just $6 it was one of the best value moments I've had in Edmonton in a long time. I sat outside in the afternoon sun, drink in hand, just soaking it all in and letting the neighbourhood wash over me. Marlo's ethos is simple and honest -- daily tortillas made from Oaxacan corn, slow-stewed meats, bright salsas, and regionally inspired cocktails. They do a few things and they do them with real care. In a world of sprawling menus and overpromising kitchens, that kind of focus is quietly radical. Old Strathcona is lucky to have Marlo. I'll be back for the tacos -- and another one of those drinks.

This were vibrant with a pop of tropical flavour. A great starter to share. Mushroom Flautas which were baked flour tortilla shell, wild mushrooms, jack cheese, garlic and avocado crema These were my favourite from the evening super rich and decadent. If you love mushrooms then try these. Mezcal Adobo Mussels - mussels, mezcal adobo sauce, grilled crostinis This dish was also good, and an interesting take on mussels. Finally Queso Fundido which contained - oaxaca cheese, pico de gallo, pork chorizo, mushrooms and tortillas. This was excellent (we ordered two) and incredibly rich. They also have a decent wine/beer menu and a great cocktail menu. Service was good.

Every salsa had its own unique flavor, and they were all delicious. The chips were fresh and crispy, and we even ended up using some of the salsas with the rest of our meal because they were that good. Next, we ordered the Beef Quesabirria, which came with braised beef, Oaxaca cheese, salsa cascabel, birria consommé, pickled red onion, white onion, cilantro, lime, and flour tortillas. These were absolutely incredible. The beef was tender, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor. The consommé was honestly a 10/10 and tied everything together. We also tried the Chicken Tinga Quesabirria, which came with chicken tinga, Oaxaca cheese, salsa cascabel, chicken birria consommé, pickled red onion, white onion, cilantro, lime, and flour tortillas. These were just as enjoyable! The chicken was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and cooked really well. To finish, we were surprised with complimentary churros because it was my birthday, which was such a thoughtful and sweet gesture. It was a great way to end the meal. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, and the outdoor patio has a great atmosphere. The only downside during my birthday visit was the service. We waited over 15 minutes just to get our drinks and another 15-20 minutes before anyone came to take our food order. There were quite a few long gaps throughout the meal. Our server was friendly, but I expected quicker service, especially for a Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. That said, I actually returned a few days later, and the service was much better, so it seems like it may have just been an off night. Overall, the food was outstanding and definitely the highlight of the experience. I'd absolutely come back for the quesabirria and salsa tasting!

Oh and there is a plentiful drink menu. Ceviche was on special and I love that so we ordered it. It contained cubed wite fish marinated in lime juice, and mixxed with pico de Gallo and tooped with avocado. It ws served with tortilla chips. It was fresh and delicious. I would order this again. My husband went with the enchilada suizas which w was 3 tortillas filled with shredded chicken baked in salsa verde. It was rich, filling , and tasty. I ordered the plato de la abuela wich had a bit of everything. It contained rice, beans, potatoes, tortillas and you can pick your filling. I went with fish and beef. Massive portions and it was really tasty too. i especially like the fish filling. I had leftovers for the next day. IF you are indecive this is a good way to go.
