THE TACO STAND @ DOWNTOWN When you arrive, expect a line out the door, it moves fairly quickly, but this spot is definitely popular. The ordering process is simple: grab a tray, walk through the line, choose whatever catches your eye, and then pay at the end. They have a great selection of meats, including al pastor, carne asada, chicken, and more. My friends and I ordered a variety so we could try a little bit of everything, and the carne asada ended up being my favorite. The steak was flavorful, tender, and cooked perfectly. One of the coolest parts of eating here is getting to watch the fresh corn tortillas being made right in front of you. You can really taste the difference, and it makes the tacos even better. The salsas are also delicious, with a nice variety of flavors and spice levels to complement the tacos. The atmosphere is lively, energetic, and exactly what you'd expect before a big Padres game. If you're looking for authentic tacos within walking distance of Petco Park, this is definitely a spot worth checking out. I stopped by Taco Stand recently and had a pretty average experience. The food was okay, but nothing really stood out. The flavors were decent, but overall it felt pretty mediocre compared to other taco spots in the area. One thing that took away from the experience was the smell inside the restaurant, which wasn't very pleasant. Additionally, there seemed to be a lack of concern when it came to the homes less people coming in and out of the restaurant. One of which was almost naked and exposed. The staff were fine and the service was reasonably slow, but based on this visit I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to return. read more

I've been here a handful of times before and have always enjoyed it, whether grabbing takeout during lunch or stopping in for a quick bite. Unfortunately, tonight was a completely different experience. I brought my wife and kids because I was excited to share a place I had liked in the past. We ordered three steak tacos, one fish taco, and carne asada fries. The tacos came out extremely cold, and the tortillas had hardened because of it. They were also very light on cilantro, onion, and guacamole. The fish taco was over-fried and oily, and the carne asada fries barely had any steak for the size of the plate. I understand every restaurant can have an off night, but this meal was really disappointing. My wife and I didn't enjoy it, and even my kids, who are usually great eaters, couldn't finish their food. Fun little taco restaurant in the San Diego downtown area. There's free street parking right outside that we were lucky though to snag. It's a small restaurant but there's plenty of seating inside and out front. Giselle took our orders and was great at recommending their favorites to us. The Taco Stand in La Jolla was one of the best taco experiences I've had in my life, so we had to check out this location in San Diego. This location does not disappoint. We went twice last week. Once on a Wednesday night as dinner for the kids. There was about a 15 minute wait as most ingredients are made to order - fresh corn tortillas and grilled meats. While we waited, we watched the chefs make our food. Upbeat music was playing and the employees were having fun. Kids had trouble finishing their tacos even after me taking my obligatory dad tax. Friday morning, we stopped in as they were opening. It took them a while to get started prepping meats, so unless your order was egg based, you'll have to wait a bit. We waited about 25 minutes being the first customer to get our order in. The food? You have to get their tacos. The fresh corn tortillas, large portions of taco filling, and the plethora of salsa options makes for a very memorable and customizable dining experience. I will usually get some combination of Baja (fried fish), Asada, Camaron, Pollo, and Al Pastor. I don't think you can go wrong with the tacos. They are on the bigger side, so I think most people would be happy with 2-3 for a meal. One item that I thought was just ok was the Pollo Ranchero Burrito. By going burrito instead of taco, you lose out on fresh corn tortillas and get a premade large wheat tortilla. The chicken is the same as the taco - well seasoned with really good char-grilled flavor. The other things were fine - rice, refried beans. I believe there is a convenience factor in just having everything in one wrap, but this burrito was a bit flimsy and a bit of a risk if you're eating it on the go. The salsa selection was decent. The fish taco was okay but I would not order again. Feel like the fish had a fishy taste if you know what I mean. Been to a couple of their other locations in SD area but not this one. Cashier was friendly. There's slightly more indoor seating here than the other locations as well as outdoor seating too! Came around 11:45 on a weekday right before the lunch rush so only waited about 10 mins for the food to be prepared. Like their other locations, my tacos had a generous amount of meat. My go-to is carne asada, al pastor, and pollo asado which were juicy and flavorful. Salsa station in the back was convenient and clean. 3 tacos for $13 and was such a filling lunch, couldn't ask for anything more satisfying !! read more

I love The Taco Stand everywhere and ANYWHERE ELSE other than the downtown location. I accidentally ordered to this location instead my go-to in North Park and was readily reminded of why I avoid this location at all costs. The service is rushed in how they interact with customers, how they prepare your order and evidently with this visit, in how they prepare their ingredients as well. I ordered 3 burritos via online ordering. Came in 20minutes past my expected ready time and still had to wait another 20min onsite. The wait wouldn't have been as irksome if not for the fact that every burrito was hurriedly "wrapped" in foil with bits and pieces exposed due to sloppy wrapping of each burrito. And to top it off, one burrito had pieces of avocado skin WITH THE STICKER and all inside. I was instantly so grossed out at the thought of how carelessly they are preparing their food at this location. Highly recommend any other one of their many locations. read more

This was the last stop of my Gaslamp Taco Crawl. I was really looking forward to this place. It came highly recommended from my buddy. Let's start with the service. The manager or counter guy was extremely rude and just seemed like he didn't want people to be there. As soon as we walked in he said, "it's a 30 minute wait for food. I hope you're okay with that." Not in a concerned way though. In an annoyed way like a please leave kind of way. Multiple customers walked out while we were there because of him. I ordered the Al Pastor taco and a side of chips. The chips were a little over salted but had great crunch to them. I wish they came out hot and fresh like Taco Centro but they did not. They were pre-boxed. The salsa bar was okay, I had heard really good things about their salsa but I wasn't blown away. The Al Pastor taco was pretty good though, the tortilla tasted very fresh and the Al Pastor was seasoned well. I like the pineapple strings the included on the taco. I do wish it was crispier though. My wife got the Pollo Asado and it was pretty good, but again not great. I feel like this place was just over hyped in my mind. read more

Food is made to order. Fresh tortillas. It is the best taco shop as a chain restaurant. It isn't "fast" food at all in all honesty it took 20 minutes in line 25 minutes for the food but was perfect time to catch up with family. The food is delicious, grilled chicken to a was great, the fish taco was burnt a little so didn't like that. The steak taco was great. It has about 4 tables outside and a small bar to sit inside. Of all the taco places we tried while on our visit to San Diego, this one was my favorite. They have a salsa bar with a hood wide variety, the also have pickled onions and carrots. The salsa variety here was great and I really enjoyed the salsa verde they had here. We ordered a variety of tacos and burritos to try as well as a bag of chips. It was a legit sized bag of chips that was quite large. They had run out of the cactus tacos which we had wanted to try. There really isn't much of an atmosphere, because you're in an airport. You can see the workers preparing your order. There's also lots of seating throughout the terminal, but you'll have to look for a free seat or table as there's no dedicated seating for Taco Stand. 1/2 Star. Service - You order at a kiosk. At first, I thought it would lead to long lines, but after standing in line and observing people ordering, I realized it was a faster more efficient way to order. A dedicated Taco Stand server checks the orders, assembles them, then calls out the next name. It's fast and efficient. 1 Star. Food - I was drawn to The Taco Stand because the menu items were more Mexican than Tex Mex (I get lots of this in Texas). While Taco is in the name, I ordered a Carne Asada burrito and chips with guac. First, the guac was made fresh. The avocados were ripe and creamy, but they also a little bland. It could have used more seasoning, but the generous portions of tortilla chips were salty enough to add some more sabor. And the burrito? It was huge. I asked Taco Stand to cut it in half (option in the kiosk). Thank goodness I did, because I got to experience the beautiful cross section of grilled tender carne asada and rice. It was super fresh, big, and I couldn't finish it. 1 1/2 Star. Will I Return? - Yes. There are several food options at Terminal 1, but none of them were of interest to me except the Taco Stand. Fantastic tacos. Way better than Tacos El Gordo. The line can be intimidating, but orders crank out faster than you'd think. Always a must when stopping by San Diego. Small, but lively environment, mix of indoor and outdoor seating, chill vibes all around. Fun fact -- during my first time to SD a few years ago, I was exhausted and Doordashed a burrito from them to my hotel. It was my first meal in SD and it was excellent. Swore that I'd pop into the restaurant during the next visit and boom. Here I am. I got their al pastor and their baja tacos. Ain't nothing like an SD fish taco. Simple but sexy. Veg and sauce are proportionate to the meat making each bite perfect. The tortillas are probably my favorite tortillas of all taco spots. Pliable, fatty, and hits just right. Ventured off and tried one of their "secret menu" items: the Carne Asada Volcan, which essentially is a tostada with melted cheese, asada, guac, onions, cilantro, and some mild salsa. It's heavy but delicious. Would order again. Three's your magic number here to feeling content. That's a solid trinity of items I got. 5/5 would come back every time I'm downtown. read more

The salsa bar was great and had pickled red onions that were seasoned. Really enjoyed that along with the fresh pico de gallo and the creamy cilantro salsa. Saw someone order an elote and regret not ordering it, or the horchata since it was unlimited refills. So happy to know there's a Taco Stand in Costa Mesa! Will def visit that when we get back home. While this is a chain of restaurants, this downtown one is a good location for a lunch stop for all of the offices that are around there. It is always a line whenever I walk by. The food itself is pretty decent although I wouldn't say it's my favorite taco shop. They make their tortillas in house and you can really taste that and everything is made to order so you may have to exercise some patience. On my most recent visit I got a pescado (mahi mahi) burrito and felt that there was a bit too much sauce and too little fish. But their chips, guac and other salsas were good as per usual. read more
