After several attempts to catch them open, I finally made it to Fish Guts an easy addition to my San Diego taco tour and well worth the wait. I'm always drawn to inventive seafood tacos, especially when they showcase different preparations, and this spot absolutely delivered. We sampled the blackened swordfish, the estilo Baja white fish (light, crisp, and exactly what you want from a classic), and started with the smoked fish dip all paired with margaritas that were dangerously smooth, more like fresh juice than a cocktail. Nothing missed the mark: from the rich, smoky dip to the perfectly seasoned blackened taco and the satisfying crunch of the fried option, each bite was thoughtfully executed. A detail I loved each order comes with two tacos, making it ideal for sharing and tasting your way through the menu. The freshness of the fish really shines and sets the tone for a proper taco crawl. Though the space is on the smaller side, with limited indoor seating and a cozy patio, it adds to the charm. Came here a few minutes before opening and there was still a line! Parking can be tricky because you only have the option for street parking. Once we were seated though, our orders were taken fairly quickly considering there was only one person working! We ordered everything on the menu basically, except dessert. The smoked fish was not available that day, but we got to try all the tacos, and we got seconds on the coconut shrimp. The fish n chips was brilliantly reinterpreted with the potato salad, the coconut shrimp was delightfully crispy and coconutty, and the swordfish was also good due to the yummy slaw. I had to ask twice for hot sauce though because it didn't have the heat I needed, but with it, it was superb! Would come back - though earlier next time to beat the line. One wish: (I wish they'd hire more people.) She was extremely professional despite the fact that she was the waitress seating people, taking orders, bartending, clearing dishes and tables, and being the cashier too! This place doesn't have any take home containers so you can't order to go or take home anything. I wanted to try their smoked fish dip but knew I wouldn't be able to finish it on my own but I was told they don't have anything to give you leftovers in. The space itself is pretty simple, but what comes out of the kitchen absolutely delivers. On a recent Friday evening my partner and I grabbed seats at the bar and shared a few different tacos: the De Espada (swordfish), De Coco (shrimp), and the Estilo Baja fish taco. Each one was excellent in its own way. The swordfish taco in particular stood out, but honestly all three were fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. We were served by a friendly young waiter whose name I unfortunately didn't catch. He mentioned he grew up in the neighborhood and was genuinely warm, attentive, and outgoing. Service like that always makes the experience feel more personal. For drinks, I had the Pepino Santo, which I highly recommend. It was refreshing and perfectly balanced. My partner tried the Smokey Mango and enjoyed that one just as much. If you're used to grabbing tacos across the border in Tijuana, the prices here might cause a little sticker shock at first. But for San Diego, and especially for tacos of this quality, the pricing really isn't surprising. One small tip: if it's a chilly evening like it was when we visited, you may want to sit inside away from the open windows or bring a jacket. It was one of the top food places I was able to fit into my few days in SD, and their tacos were so fresh and this was one of the very few places that lived up to the hype. I came here in June of 2024. It was a spontaneous dinner outing with friends! Parking was hard to find, so luckily our car didn't get towed. The craft agua frescas looked so good! Tried Fish Guts while visiting and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We ordered estilo baja and de espada, and both were incredibly moist, fresh, and packed with flavor. You can really taste the quality of the fish-simple, delicious, and done right. My only small complaint (and I'm guessing I'm not the only one who feels this way) is that I wish you could mix the tacos instead of having to order two of the same kind. It would be great to try more varieties in one order. That said, it was so good that I'm already planning to come back this weekend before heading back to Oregon. Our group of 5 was able to fit at one of tall bar seats, but not sure if a larger party could fit. The menu is quite small, but mostly pairs of tacos that you cannot mix and match. The trick is to trade with people but honestly I did not want to share. For fried seafood tacos, these did not feel heavy or greasy at all, very well fried. For all the coconut haters out there, you definitely taste some coconut but it's not very coconut heavy like thai food. Seating is mostly outdoors, a few spots available in the small dining room. Right when they opened a party of 14 came in and took over the restaurant, it's not built for that capacity. The food here is nice. It differs tremendously from mitchs in Point Loma or bluewater. Everything is freshly prepared though per day. The Cole slaw and the fish are so up there in quality. My sword fish was up there in quality. But the reason for the line is because you need to wait to be seated and you get full waiter service. The Smoked Fish Dip was a great starter. Always something that hits the spot. We shared the De Espada, Estilo Baja, and the De Coco. They each come with 2 tacos (around $6 per taco). I really enjoyed all of the time, particularly the De Espada. I was so so so freakin excited to try Fish Guts but left utterly disappointed. I showed up a few minutes after 12 and the place was almost full but I got a good seat at the counter. I asked the waitress if they had the fish sandwich back but she didn't have an answer and said it's basically still off the menu. But later I spoke with SD locals who said the waitress was wrong and the sandwich is there. So I don't know who to believe. I started with the smoked fish dip. This was fine. You can't even tell it has fish in it. Which might be fine for someone who doesn't like fish, but when you're at a fish restaurant ordering a fish dish, you want to taste the fish. This just tasted like a serrano dip because the heat from the serranos overpowered everything else. Now for the baja fish tacos. More like coleslaw tacos because there was so much spicy coleslaw on these tacos you wouldn't even know that you're eating a fish taco. The tortillas are fantastic. Actually, the tortillas are perfect. They're soft, warm, chewy, and flavorful. But the rest is a mess. The fish itself is flaky and soft but the batter was soggy and mush. And the size of the fish is like a chicken nugget compared to the tortilla. I'm not expecting a whole filet on here since these are "Street tacos" but c'mon. two bites and the fish was gone, then you're just eating tortilla and coleslaw. There is so much coleslaw that you don't taste anything else either. After talking to others, everyone said the baja tacos are not the thing to order but rather you should order the sandwich (if / when they ever bring it back) and the swordfish tacos. My friend and I were grabbing Macha at Morning Dew when we noticed a line forming across the street. We had absolutely no idea what was going on but realized it was for a restaurant that hadn't opened for the day yet. On a whim, we hopped in line around 11:58am (they open at noon) and we were roughly the 24/25 people in line. These are some of the BEST tacos I've ever had! We tried the estilo Baja tacos, Baja shrimp tacos, al pastor tacos and coconut shrimp tacos. Each taco had it's own distinct flavor and the jalapeño slaw on each taco was perfection! My favorite was the coconut shrimp tacos. Combining the coconut and jalapeños was a smart flavor contrast. They open at 12 PM, and I'd read that they often sell out before closing so we got in line around 12:45. There were about 15 people ahead of us, and the outdoor seating area is very small. We waited roughly 15 minutes to be seated then another 15 to 20 minutes just to place our order. The tacos came out about 15 minutes later, and we didn't end up leaving until around 2:20 PM. This is definitely not a quick grab-and-go spot. I ordered the: Coconut Shrimp Tacos: 7/10. They were good with a nice crunch, but they had a bit of a spicy kick that caught me off guard. My friend thought they were slightly dry. Swordfish Tacos: 8/10. They were excellent. The fish tasted very fresh. My friend ordered the fish tacos and said they were her absolute favorite, rating them a 10 out of 10, though I didn't get a chance to try them myself. The staff were very friendly, and the spot is dog-friendly. They even brought out water bowls for our dogs, which was a nice touch. Parking is street parking only. They were happy to split our checks, which we really appreciated. Overall, the tacos are delicious, they serve alcohol, and prices are reasonable. Gareth Leonard hipped me to Fish Guts as one of the best fish tacos in San Diego and I wasn't disappointed. The place is small, so we were fortunate to get there right before they opened with only a couple of people ahead of us. After we'd been seated, the place quickly filled up. We got three sets of tacos: traditional Baja fish, grilled swordfish, and the shrimp. I liked the Baja fish and swordfish a lot. The shrimp was good, but the flavor profile wasn't that different than the Baja fish. The quality of the ingredients is superb and the tortillas are freshly made. While we ate, we had a front row seat for all the activity on Logan street. This is a cute little intersection with restaurants and interesting businesses in either direction for a couple of blocks. We saw tons of parrots and cool cars. Parking directly on Logan can be tough, so I went over the Highway 5 bridge and parked near Burbank Elementary over on Julian.
