I have had Nina alter many things over the years, but she really showed her excellence, wisdom, compassion, and overall know-how and experience when I brought her my mother of the bride dress to fix - exactly one week before the wedding. The upscale store that sold me the gown had free tailoring, and after four or five tries and my despair that it still didn't fit right and they weren't listening to me, I politely gave up and walked the gown over to Tailor Made. Nina thoughtfully figured out what the issue was and dropped everything to fix it for me, which was pretty complicated and took a few days. She solved what seemed like an impossible problem and what the store seamstress had told me was all "in my head." Very disappointed with the work from this shop. I took a garment in that was slightly big in areas and they did a complete hack job. Seams were misaligned, clasp in the front that I requested was completely showing and they completely did not do one of the items that I asked for. I then took it back to have it fixed and, although they were kind enough to fix it for free (even though I should have never had to take it back in the first place) it was once again done poorly. Seams still didn't line up and the stitching was such poor quality that when I went to put the garment on the stitching that THEY had done ripped. I now have to take it in to get it fixed again. How to Lose Returning Customers in 20 Days: I just spent 10 minutes scrolling through our online bank statement to see exactly when we dropped off my husband's suit to get tailored: August 29, 2019. We paid $126.00 and said we weren't in a rush because the wedding is on September 21, 2019. You brought out the calendar and told us to pick a date. We told you Thursday, September 19. When my husband came in at the end of the day on September 19, 2019, you said "the suit is not ready yet" but, hey, "come back in an hour," will you? This is your profession. This is what you do for a living. This is what you've been doing for years. You must be an expert at managing your time, your clients, and your workload. Right? Or maybe you just prioritize clients who YOU think are worthy of excellent service, namely, all of the (mostly white) clients here who have written positive reviews? I've been going to Tailor Maid since 1998 and have always been satisfied. I went to their store in Hillsdale Shopping Center until it closed down several years ago. Thank goodness they still had their store in Stanford Shopping Center. I have no problem traveling farther to ensure that my alterations are done right. Over the past two decades (almost) I have brought slacks, suits and jeans to them and they have doen a great job. Only once I had a thread come loose on a pair hemmed slacks and when I called them about it, they fixed it for free. In addition, did it in one day. Awesome. I've read other reviews and understand that those experiences are also legitimate ans thankfully I have not had an issue with quality, workmanship or customer service. I will contiue to go Tailor Maid as long as they are in business. read more

Tailor Made totally saved me! I brought my ballgown in on a Sunday and it was ready on Wed (I was leaving for my trip on Thurs) The gown was a size 6 and I needed it brought in to make it a size 4. I also needed the hem brought up and the straps shortened. The outcome was beautiful and it fit perfectly. The seamstress went to work as soon as I brought the dress in. She had me put it on, gave me a pair of heels and got right to work on pinning the hem. She adjusted the back seam to fit my measurements then adjusted the straps. I'm thrilled with the outcome. I called ahead to see if the tailor could accept a dress for alterations at 7:30pm. They close at 8p. Got there at 7:30 and saw the tailor walking frantically past me as I was walking up. Didn't know it was her at the time. Thirty minutes later, still waiting while the man working in the tailor shop keeps telling me that's she's on her way back. What a huge waste of my time. This shop is truly one of the best tailors in the Bay Area, Nina and her team are incredibly helpful, prices are right and turnaround time is spot on. Seems as if anyone who has any issue clearly doesn't understand tailoring is an art and will never be perfect. You can not make a garment that is too lose very trim and on the flip side can not make a garment that is too tight, much bigger. I have referred many people and will continue to do so. read more

Next weekend, my brother is getting married. I was fitted for my bridesmaid dress back in January. Since then, I've lost a few pounds and the dress was too long to begin with. I needed to get it fitted. I went to The Tailor Maid on the recommendation of both the bride and her mother. However, I live in San Francisco. But I figured I might as well be safe and go somewhere "good" as I had never had anything tailored before. I took my dress in August 1st. The following weekend I was going out of town for 10 days, which I told the woman who fitted me. She told me to pick it up any time after that. I picked up the dress last Sunday because I couldn't get down to Palo Alto before then. I went in, got my dress and paid $80. I assumed if I needed to try it on, someone would have told me that. Needless to say, no one told me to try it on and I didn't ask if I should. I got back in my car and drove the hour home. When I got home and tried it on, the dress was still too big and too long. I called the next day and they told me to bring it in again. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for the two hour round trip until the following Friday after work. I tried it on for the woman who had originally fitted me. She said, "Oh dear, what happened?" The back hem was longer than the front, but the whole thing was still too long and too big overall. Two days later, I made my fourth trip down the peninsula specifically for this dress. I walked in to see the owner sitting behind the desk. I told her that I brought in my bridesmaid dress to be fitted a second time as the first time hadn't quite done it. She said, "The lavender one?" I said, "Yes, that's right." She said, "So how much weight DID you lose? Why would we have pinned it and missed taking off an inch and a quarter?" I was astounded. Honestly, I was so appalled I could hardly answer her. That being said, since I had gotten the dress fitted the first time, I know I've lost all of eight tenths of a pound (yes, I do keep very close track and yes, that's less than one pound). These types of comments continued and then she said, "And how much were you expecting to pay for this? Because I wouldn't feel right about not charging you anything." Her tone seemed to indicate her distrust in me. I was horrified, I have no idea what I even said, I was so shocked and flustered by her audacity and rudeness. She didn't tell me how much she would charge me. She told me to try on the dress. And yes, I did bring the shoes and the same undergarments I was fitted in. I very quickly tried on the dress. It still could have been taken in more in the bust to be really snug and secure. However, I didn't say anything because there was absolutely no way I would subject myself to another instant of that kind of treatment. All I wanted was to get out of there and never go back. I changed back and walked out of the dressing room. I told her it was fine enough. Then she wanted to talk money. "Well, it should cost $100, but I'm willing to give it to you for $50," she said. Fine, that's fine. As she was ringing me up, I told her I'd pay the full amount if that would make her feel better because I was not lying about my weight but if that would make her feel better, fine, I would do it. "No, $50 is enough." I took the dress. And I will never go back. She's lost out on all my business, my parents' business, my friends' business, and hopefully yours too. Word of mouth took me an hour out of my way to The Tailor Maid. I hope it keeps you away. read more

The only person worth seeing at Tailor Maid is the Filipina woman with glasses. She is FABULOUS - absolutely wonderful. I took a really nice BCBG dress to Tailor Maid for alterations. When I picked up the dress, it was much shorter than I expected and the neckline was still too low. (The unexpectedly short hemline was probably my fault.) I made the mistake of picking up the dress the day of my company party (where I planned to rock that dress). I was heartbroken - could the dress be miraculously resurrected within the next few hours? The Filipina woman heard me out and comforted me. I tried on the dress for her, she assured me it wasn't as bad as I thought and promised that it could be fixed before the end of the business day. When I picked up the dress, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she had NOT charged me for fixing the alterations! Bless her heart. Tailor Maid only gets three (3) stars because the women who have helped me before were AWFUL. Rude, kept me and other customers waiting (up to 1/2 an hour once), didn't really listen to what I wanted - you get the picture. I basically felt as if I had been blown off. Since it's been about two years since someone's reviewed The Tailor Maid at the Stanford Mall, it's about time for an updated review of them! They do solid work, have a pleasant demeanor every time I come in, and can usually turn alterations around pretty quickly (i.e., within a few business days.) I was floored, for example, when I recently needed an evening gown taken in at the sides, and they were able to complete the work in 3 business days with no rush charges or anything (in spite of the fact that it was a delicate fabric and had a lining). Afterwards, it fit perfectly! My one frustration is that lately they've started quoting a price range for each garment that needs work, and every time, it ends up being the more expensive price. (Regardless, their prices are a bit on the high side.) If that's the real price, then I'd rather have them just quote me that than let me think that the work may be cheaper than what it ends up being. They offer a $5.00 discount after the fifth time you come in, so that definitely comes in handy! To me, the pricing is what keeps them in three and not four-star territory, but every time, I have been pleased with their work and will continue to go back. read more

I honestly don't get the negative reviews about this business. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I can be snarky and cold in sharing my experiences, but I have nothing but love for The Tailor Maid. A few months ago, I found the most perfect New Year's Eve dress complete with a sexy cleavage bearing cutout. Fast forward to this week. The boyfriend announces that we're having dinner with his family--my very first time meeting them. I rushed to ModCloth to find a dress that was parent appropriate and had it overnighted. It arrived on the 30th. I tried it on and realized it was at least 1 to 2 sizes too large. (How did I manage to lose 2 dress sizes without even noticing it?! Darn you, legging and tunic season!!) I was in tears. Every place I called had a turn around time of 5-7 days and rushes weren't an option. I can assure you that I was ready to rip out a kidney and offer it as a sacrifice at this point. Meanwhile, an amazing client in my shop recommended The Tailor Maid. Apparently she had the exact same dress fiasco last New Year's Eve. I yelped them for the address and realized I had skipped over it because of the low stars on Yelp. I decided to call anyways. I am so glad that I did. I rushed over still in tears. Within 5 minutes, I was in my dress getting it pinned up. It seriously looks like they had to take at least 2 inches off each side--cutting and completely resewing. "Ain't nobody got time for that." Apparently they do. The owner came out and talked to me since she wanted me to be aware of all charges, including the rush charge. (See? They're extremely transparent and communicate well.) She cracked a joke "You do realize tomorrow is New Year's Eve, right?" and managed to get me to smile for the first time since trying the dress on. Did I mention she also played therapist while I retold my story about boyfriend springing meeting the parents on me? I dropped the dress off after 12 pm on the 30th. I picked it up at 12 pm on the 31st. The charges were actually comparable to the prices of my seamstress while growing up in small town Iowa, so I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Even with the rush charges and obviously time consuming sewing, it was only $54. When I came back in, everyone was extremely warm and friendly. The dress fits exactly like I had pictured it. I actually cried happy tears because I was so relieved and pleased with their work. I'm pretty sure I haven't cried happy tears over someone's work since my last tattoo. Seriously, check this place out for your alteration needs. You honestly won't regret it. Just make sure to ask questions if you have them. That's what they're there for. read more

Extremely rude and condescending to my needs. I payed triple the cost of most places and the work was lazy and poorly fitting. If I could give this place a negative star rating I would. The owner, a middle aged lady was rude and very aggressively so. I'm in my mid-twenties and maybe that had something to do with it, or maybe she was having a bad day but regardless of what her problems were at the time, you never take it out on the customer! I consider Stanford shopping center to be filled with very accommodating, pleasant and otherwise genuinely nice people. This store, with this one woman in particular is a mean troll that lives in a crappy shop that produces products that looks like a four year old worked on. Only go here if you want to be treated poorly! If you want to be treated like crap, please go here. The old woman is a joke of a service provider. She was without a doubt the most awful person I've met, not just in customer service, but in my life. She's it. Ok, I am simply bewildered by the negative reviews on yelp. Then again, most reviews are over 2 years, and things do change with time. Don't believe me? Just asked yourself if you're the same person you were 2 years ago. That said, my wife and I have been using Tailor Made for over 5 years. I can't remember why, but it might have simply been convenience since we live relatively close to the Hillsdale Mall. Unfortunately, they no longer have the Hillsdale Mall location, so we started going down to their Stanford location. Why? because they do good work. Sure, I may know nothing about tailoring and clothesmaking, but my wife, with her OCD tendencies applied to sewing, certainly does. Most recently, I had 4 pairs of pants altered, both hem as well as bringing in the waist. Thanks to my pro-cycling aspirations (yes, I'm being sarcastic here!), I have to order size 28 waisted pants and have them taken in (and no, I refuse to shop in the boys dept.). However, my thighs are disprorportionately big, so that has to be considered. Anyway, I tried them all on, had them pinned. About a week later, when I picked them up (and yes, you should *always* try on the garment at pick-up *and* before you pay!!!!), they fit perfect! Hooray! With new pants that fit, it dawned upon me that I really ought to take my super-swanky slim-fit Hugo Boss suit pants to Tailor Made to get re-fit. When I bought the suit about a year ago, the tailor at the HB in Santa Clara took a somewhat aggressive approach in bringing in the waist. So for the past year, it always felt like I was going to burst out of my pants at the thighs, Incredible Hulk-style, whenever I walked. So yes, I made the trek back to Tailor Made the next day and was fit by Diane, who actually knew my specific fit problem based on the fact that she used to be a competitive cyclists herself! Not only that, she took the time to actually look at the pants to make sure that they could be altered appropriately. The icing on the cake with my experience was that I told her I needed them the next Thursday (I came in on Sunday) for a fundraiser event. While she did not commit to getting them done, she mentioned I should call in the morning to check. Indeed they were done in time for me to pick them up (and try them on!), and in time for my fundraiser dinner! And with no "Rush" charge. In summary, the people that work here are human beings. It seems like they're busy (since they're good), and tend to deal with lots of high-stress customers, so they might be a bit on-edge, especially if you are expect them to be more polite than you expect yourself to be. However, everyone there has always been pleasant to my wife and me and they do top-quality work. Yes, they're opinionated, but that's why you're paying them! Believe me, unless you sew yourself, you want their opinions on what will/wont work. Oh yeah, about their prices. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. They aren't cheap, but that just means you won't look cheap either. read more

Extremely Bad Service. My husband and I came to alter his new tuxedo; although, I am not professional in alteration, but logically I knew what could and should have been done. They tailored tuxedo pants flat in the bottom, making them baggy in the front and very short in the back. After our first alteration, one lady told us we could come back to re-do tuxedo pants if needed. When we came back to re-alter pants; the other lady refused to help us, because she didn't want to be responsible for any "cutting". I will never go back there again, and do not suggest you either. Right Hand doesn't know what left hands does. P.S. We were recommended by Hugo Boss Store. They have always done an exemplary job taking great care of my alteration needs. My most recent expreince (which is prompting my review) was nothing short of a miracle. I needed a gown tailored in 3 days time. During this time I went in for 3 separate fittings and Nina performed a miracle on a gorgeous dress with a few serious design flaws. It was NOT an easy alteration and she accommodated my crazy turnaround time and made sure it was absolutely perfect. I am shocked at the negative reviews! They really know what they are doing and it is COMPLETELY reasonable in the alterations business to have a client come back for a fitting for a more complicated alteration! I ordered my wedding dress from a bridal boutique and was thrilled to receive it, unfortunately the bridal shop ordered me the incorrect dress (see photos) and I was devastated that we wedding was ruined. I had never had to get alterations on a dress before, so I asked around at work for any local recommendations. Several people had recommended The Tailor Made. I checked out their website, and towards the bottom, there is a feature to email for a quote on the alterations that you need to have done. The owner, Beverly got back to me the same day, and helped answer my questions. We had several emails back and forth as she explained the quote and the type of work that would have to be done for my particular dress. Having mentioned that I had never had alterations done to a dress, she provided me with the phone number for the store so i could speak to her with any questions or concerns as well as her cell phone number. They have two locations, one at the Hillsdale Shopping Mall in San Mateo, and the other at Stanford Mall in Palo Alto. I brought my dress in a couple of days ago to the Stanford location. The girl who helped me was really nice and very helpful. She gave me a quote range higher than what was given to me via email, but I had somewhat anticipated that because all of the quotes over email had been done without them ever seeing the dress. I guess my only complaint if any was that it was a bit difficult to find the location. The store is actually located on the 2nd floor of one of the shops there. The shop name escapes me at the moment. You either have to go up an elevator on one side, or the other side take a flight of stairs up, go down a hall way, and there is the store. If you're not really paying attention, you may just walk by the sign that directs you to go up to the second level to the store and end up going into Macy's for men. You have to go up some stairs or take an elevator in this hallway near Abercrombie and Fitch. They hemmed my pants, adjusted the waist, shortened my jackets sleeve all in a few days.
