Never have I been disappointed by Nancy. I've made alterations to clothes that were too long (sleeves and pants), not the correct place for seams (shoulders), too much space (under the arms), and too baggy (more fitted), too tight (bust), and a tiny hole (weave). She took care of it all. She's expensive; however she's far cheaper than getting your clothes made bespoke. I know others who go to her too. Nancy did a wonderful job replacing the zipper in my son's jacket. She first tried to repair the existing one and when that didn't work she replaced the entire zipper. Nancy has altered 9 of my dresses and she always does an amazing job! I have a short torso so I always have to take like 2-3 inches out of the middle, otherwise I get a wavy zipper. She takes out the extra fabric, re-sizes the straps, and re-attaches the zipper on all of my dresses. If it's a formal dress, she also hems the dress as well. This is my first Yelp review I've ever posted but I've never been so happy with a service. I've had two very important pieces hemmed by Nancy. One was a floor length sari with beads, sequins, and tulle and the other was a floor length heavily beaded dress from BHLDN. Nancy is efficient, timely, trustworthy, and so incredibly skillful. Both times she was able to have my dresses done within a week, which is significantly faster than any other tailor I spoke to. I think her prices match the detail that goes into her work. I came to see Nancy for a suit alteration after a recommendation from a close friend. I needed the suit in time for my graduation and Nancy was able to accommodate me for the short turnaround. I was a bit clueless when it came to asking for what I needed exactly, I just knew the suit didn't fit quite the way I wanted it to. Nancy's years of experience and knowledge of the field truly showed during my fitting and consultation with her. She immediately figured out which areas needed an adjustment in order to make the suit fit me in the most flattering way. She took into account which type of shoes I would wear (and their height) as well as how loose I wanted the pants to be. Throughout the experience, she made suggestions on what she thought would be best and always asked for my opinion. The suit came out amazing and looked like it was made for me. Nancy fulfilled my request in time for my big event and her pricing matched the quote we agreed upon at drop off. I know that suits can be complicated to alter, considering how some have an inner lining or pattern, but her work was professional and seamless. If you're in need of any kind of suit alteration or business wear, I highly recommend Nancy. She is skilled and meticulous, down to the color of the thread. I came in to have a bridesmaid dress altered in two weeks - definitely last minute! I needed 4 inches let out in the shoulders, which was a bit intimidating and I wasn't sure of the success. Not only was the work done in a week -yay!- but it was done so well I couldn't even tell what had been done, and the bodice was made of many ruffles so this was no easy feat. It fit perfectly too! When I had to go get cash to pay (they prefer cash or check), I came back to find that she had fixed a small issue with the zipper that we had spotted when I tried on the dress, completely for free. Definitely not the cheapest but I found it well worth the cost. read more

I'm not the kind of person to leave a negative review of a local small business, but this needs to be shared. DO NOT trust this business! You will be saddled with hundreds of dollars in hidden fees. I went in to get my dress hemmed a few weeks ago. When I got it back, the owner charged me $160. She printed the receipt and then threw it in the garbage, without letting me look at it. When I asked why this was so pricey, she said it was the right amount for a hem and was incredibly hostile in defending the exorbitant price. A couple weeks later, a family member took her coat to be relined at Nancy's Tailor. The owner originally said she'd accept any amount of money for the coat, then billed my relative $350. Once again, she defended her price and was hostile. This owner is not transparent with her prices, and will scam you if you bring your clothes to her. There are a lot of wonderful business owners in Los Altos. This is NOT one of them. read more

I've been going to Nancy for years and her work has always been top quality for a fair price comparable to others in the same area. I stand 4' 11", so needless to say, I've had many pairs of pants hemmed and clothes taken in and Nancy has done impeccable work on everything I've brought to her. I've even had a beaded chiffon prom dress shortened and taken in at the top to perfection. I trust Nancy with all my tailoring needs. Pricing seems to be an ongoing complaint within these Yelp reviews, so I suggest asking for a quote before getting any work done if that's what you're concerned about. She is always willing to give a quote (price + timeline) along with a fitting before taking your item(s). Overall, I highly recommend Nancy if you're looking for quick overturn and excellent work. She does great custom work on all sorts of items, including curtains, thick double-layered coats, bag zippers, etc. read more

I got a pair of mens chino pants tailored to be a little slimmer. The pants fit great! Nancy was really nice, and what I really appreciated is that she told me what she thought from her expertise. From my experience, tailors usually let you dictate the tailoring 100% which can lead to customer error. She listened closely to what exactly I wanted, and gave advice on how to best tailor the pants . The pants turned out great. I'm really glad I went to her. My only con is the price. I found it to be pricier than other tailors, but the experience and end result were great. read more

PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND KEEP MY STORY IN MIND BEFORE YOU GO TO NANCY! **It's a long story, but hopefully it will prevent someone else from going through a similar situation. I went to Nancy a couple of weeks ago for wedding dress alterations after reading such great reviews here on Yelp. I'm sure everyone wants to find a good seamstress/tailor in general, but in my case, I needed alterations because my traditional Korean dress had arrived from overseas with errors, and I was pressed for time. To be fair, Nancy's initial customer service was wonderful. She'd understandably never worked with a hanbok before, and spent a fair amount of time fitting me and going over what I wanted done -- which basically was to create an entirely new bodice for the dress and some minor trim work. While the original bodice was beautiful, it was a bit too ornate for my taste, and she replaced it with a very well-made version in plain black silk. So, no problems with the quality of her work, or the five day turn around time. A+! HOWEVER... I had said from the beginning that I would like to get the intricately embroidered silk bodice back once she took it off. I didn't want it on the dress, but it was lovely, and I'd paid hundreds of dollars for just that section of the hanbok. So, when I went back to pick up the finished dress, I again asked for it. After I asked, she disappeared for a moment, and came back with a bag of folded material. I guess this is where I messed up, because I trusted her, and didn't unfold all of the pieces to make sure it was in there. Once I did check, I saw that scraps of the replacement silk I had provided were there, but not the original embroidered material. No big deal; I figured she would have realized her mistake when she came across it (I don't know how to stress how stunning it was -- no one could have mistaken it for scraps). I admit that I waited to call to ask where it was until after Christmas (two weeks IS kind of a long time), but the real problem is how Nancy handled the situation today. She called back this afternoon to tell me she couldn't find it. Okay; I wasn't thrilled, but I didn't freak out and start yelling or anything. I like to think I'm a reasonable, polite person, and I know I'm more inclined to resignedly accept such a situation after an apology rather than aggressively demand repayment or make threats. I say this to make it clear that Nancy was most certainly NOT dealing with a hostile customer, and her subsequent behavior is inexcusable. After I politely responded that I was confused because I remembered telling her that I wanted it back (after all, this is why she gave me the bag) she told me in one breath that it had most likely been thrown out over Christmas, and that next time (HA!), I should tell her I want it back, because this time around I hadn't, so it wasn't her fault, the end. Literally. As I was beginning my response, she cut me off by hanging up. Um... wtf?! Basically, after she had received several hundreds of dollars from me and lost an expensive piece of material that I expressly asked for back multiple times, she dealt with the situation by denying any responsibility (kind of implying that I was lying) and hanging up the phone before I could even respond. No apology, no attempt to compensate even a tiny bit for the loss... nothing. Oh, and one last thing (I know this is long, but I want to paint a clear picture): My dress was custom-made, entirely of silk (even the inner linings), and some of the material was hand-painted. I'm not trying brag or anything, but you know... regardless of style, most wedding dresses are expensive -- items to be handled with at least a bit of care, right? Well, even while I was there, I was kind of mortified at how the dress was handled at times -- just tossed around and dumped on the floor. I wouldn't mention it otherwise, but when I got the dress back, I noticed a stain slightly larger than a quarter in the middle of the skirt. I'm 98% sure it wasn't from me because, for one, I've never touched the dress without first throughly washing my hands and two, because, yeah, I'm a gushing, overly-excited bride, and every time I look at the dress, I obsessively take in every detail. I really feel I would have noticed a stain of that size on the very front of my dress. So, while stressing that I am not entirely certain, I suspect that the careless way I witnessed the dress being handled might have something to do with the lovely stain currently featured so prominently on my wedding dress. I never got a chance to mention that to her either, because, you know... she hung up on me. The bottom line here is that if you are the type of person who judges a person or situation based on how you are treated under the best circumstances AND the worst, Nancy might not be the person to go to. read more

I do and in less than 2 minutes I'm measured and sent on my way. Nancy was recommended to me by a friend who is a regular. I got my wedding dress altered as well as half of my wardrobe I was taking with me on my honeymoon, including a very intricate Vera Wang gown. I recommended her to my husband who was slightly skeptical from his experiences with tailors, but who is now a loyal customer as well. My tailor-hopping days are over. No more getting rushed in and out of one dressing room that's comprised of an old shower curtain hanging over a corner of the room. Then, take their time to do sloppy alterations. Nancy's shop is spacious (with multiple changing rooms), professional, and clean. Her work is superb and speedy. I found Nancy by a recommendation because I needed someone to shorten my wedding dress by about 5". Now yes, I did see the review below, and I was going to avoid Nancy, my friend insisted she did good work. Also, because I purchased my dress from overseas, I saved $$-wise but didn't get the benefit of an in-house tailor. Thus-I went to Nancy. The dress was difficult to alter because it had a long train, so it had to be gradually shortened. She did a fantastic job. She returned my dress in spotless condition, even though she had to take it home to do the alterations. Also, she had to take off the beaded bottom edge to do the alterations, but re-attached in perfectly. I thought she charged me a fair price given the amount of handiwork involved, and her alterations withstood a day of trekking through gravel and dirt for photos. Nancy altered a dress for me for a reasonable price. I had broken a zipper on an expensive dress. The zipper was not really necessary so she closed up the dress and I could still wear it without the zipper in place. If I have other alterations in the future I will think of bringing them to Nancy's! read more

This post had been removed which seemed dishonest to me and since it is an honest review, I am adding it back. Had gone in to get a pair of pants hemmed, and was fine to pay the $10 (even though the window says $8, I didn't argue - the work was good), Nancy seemed nice and efficient - I even brought her a persimmon along with 4 more pairs of pants AND a $40 jacket with lining to be altered. Imagine my utter shock to find out that this would cost me $285!!! I couldn't believe it, I thought it was a mistake. She said, oh no, the jacket had lining so costs more - $85 for the shoulders, $85 for to take in the sides and $45 to shorten the sleeves. I could barely say, "the jacket itself only cost $45 new"! Oh, that's too bad, said Nancy. (in other words, bad luck for you, good for me!) I wanted to cry. I did not get an estimate but never would I have thought it would be so expensive - this area though is mostly folks who have no cares when it comes to money - I wish I was one of them! I wish she would have said, by the way, the jacket will cost much much more than it is worth to alter, or something - I feel I have been ripped off AND that I learned a very hard lesson regarding asking for estimates. USE WITH THIS CAUTIONARY WARNING: Nancy does excellent work, but she will try to charge you an outrageous price with no forewarning. I had two very simple repairs: both were seams on inexpensive blouses that had come open, one about one inch and the other about 11 inches along the underarm seam. I don't have a sewing machine, or I would have repaired it myself in about five minutes. Very simple repair. She did not tell me what her rates were, but when I went back to get the blouses (plain black, not decorations, not delicate fabric), she asked for $65.00!
