Magnifico! The Tamale Store has exceeded my expectations. So many varieties of meat, vegetables and fruit surrounded by moist masa and wrapped in corn husks! Pork and chili, chicken chipotle, hatch and Jack, beans and cheese, Southwest veggie, red velvet and sweet cream cheese, and more. We enjoy tamales from a store back home. We buy them frozen and vacuum sealed in plastic and pop them in boiling water for 30 minutes. The cashier at The Tamale Store, however, said we might remove the plastic and steam them in an Instant Pot for 10 minutes. Wow - how easy. I bought 4 packages (2 per package) and took them home to steam. One package along with a helping of rice, more than satisfied two of us. Delicioso! Plenty of hatch chilis and ooey-gooey cheese filled the sweet masa. I'm delighted I found this gem of a store while surfing YELP for Mexican cuisine. The Store also features a restaurant that serves tamales, of course, and a handful of Mexican side dishes and drinks. Closed on Sundays, yet the adjoining marketplace offered selection of salsas, candies and other treats for sale the afternoon my friend and I visited. By the way, tamales cost $38 a dozen and $8 a two-pack - reasonable considering each one weighs one-half a pound. read more

The tamales were mediocre. I bought 6 tamales for $25 with green salsa to go. When the guy brought out my tamales, I asked if the salsa was also in there. Instead of answering me, he just turned around as if I were a burden and a poured a little chipotle salsa, which I did not want. He handed it to me and took off. I went home to eat the tamales but the pork meat was dry, it was difficult to eat without salsa. I tried the chipotle salsa but did not like the flavoring. The green chicken tamale was better but parts of the masa was dry and hard. My husband also just couldn't finish the tamales without salsa. Thank God for Taco Boys for saving the day! I stopped by Taco Boys and offered to buy green salsa at this point as I was desperate to somehow not waste the tamales. They were super nice and told me to take some without charge. Haven't been here since they first opened . Heard they had a great weekend breakfast menu and stopped in Saturday morning. Had the Tamale Omelette served with your choice of two sides. I had the breakfast potato and corn casserole. The omelette surrounds the tamale and it is topped with condiments and a sauce. Great flavors and enough for two meals. Since my wife makes great tamales I wanted to gauge these to hers. The restaurant is large, clean and well organized. I ordered my tamale, to go, and went to the car to show my wife. We opened it and I had first chance at it. This is absolutely the best tamale I have ever had. I am very picky about the masa and it was fantastic. A lot of beef and masa but well balanced. Holy mole. My favorite spice inside of a tamale? Don't mind if I do. I've had tamales from the Tamale Store at the farmers market before- and I thought the ones I have had were just "ok". Most of the good tamales sell it quick, so I was ecstatic to have an opportunity to try the chicken mole tamale at their flagship location. Woaa. One of the best tamales I've had. They must have injected it with steroids because it was really jacked up- filled with shredded chicken and a flavorful mole. It was served with a side of chips and mole sauce, which was a nice bonus. Because tamales in general are so high in calories and saturated fat (it's the lard!), if you're going to eat them, they really have to be delicious. I got some Sweet Corn Tamales for Christmas. First thing I noticed was on the package they were made with Canola oil instead of lard. Not only is that bad for your body, but doesn't taste the same and is not a traditional recipe. My boyfriend & I are always looking for GREAT Mexican food in AZ. We relocated from Los Angeles, so our expectations are pretty high. We haven't had much luck but stumbled across the Tamale Store & OMG WE ARE IN LOVE!! We have been 2 times now in 2 months. Everyone is friendly, answers all our questions & you can tell they love what they do. The restaurant and store are always clean, good AC and you can smell the amazing tamales being made in the back. Love that you can see into the kitchen too! Like I said we are from LA, so tamales are literally everywhere. I've never had a tamale i didn't like in LA. And always go for homemade. The Tamale Store makes me feel like I'm back in LA. Every single one is so delicious! We got the red chili chicken, the chicken mole, the green chili beef & chicken, the sweet corn, the green corn & cream cheese AND the chili relano. That's all I can remember now lol The hot tamales come out fast & the sides portions are HUGE! Wasn't expecting that at all! I love the street corn! My boyfriend loves their rice and beans. And the chips are nice & crispy. We have both taken 4 to 6 packs of the frozen tamales home both trips so far. And they steam up really nice. Taste exactly the same as in the restaurant. We live in Mesa but the 45min drive is absolutely worth it! Next time though we are going to do the Gilbert Farmer's Market which is much closer to us, to get out fix. There was a little store area that was selling prepackaged homemade tamales so you could take them home. We ordered the chicken and pork green Chile tamales along with a red chile beef tamale. Found this place when I had fam living in the area. Oh holy heck. The best. Now my family has moved to Texas. You know how good The Tamale Store is? So good we drive from CA to TX just so we can bring an ice chest and fill it on the way. That's goooood! They ship now which hasn't always been the case so you won't be out of luck no matter where you are. But it's nice to place an order by phone, ask for your tamales frozen if you're stocking up, and buzz by to get them. Since the new location, they have a MUCH larger space and more tamale variety on hand. If your heart is set on a particular flavor, call ahead. Tex-Mex is everyone's fave and every flavor isn't made every day. We were afraid once the foodie magazine chose them as best in the U.S. they'd be too overwhelmed to keep up their quality but that hasn't happened. The quality is still unbelievable. Be aware, during the holidays they're dealing with regular demand and the Latin culture's New Year tamale tradition. They have actually stopped taking orders just before Christmas due to filling the New Years orders. This is the time of year when you have to plan, call and order. The restaurant isn't fancy but the food is great, and you're always treated like family. They know we old-timers who supported their little hole-in-the-wall. We've ordered tamales for Christmas dinner from here countless times and every time, their line has been speedy, their tamales have been delicious, their staff has been awesome, and their sauces have been perfection! The last time I was here, lots of folks were in a long line waiting to order. With only one point-of-sale, things moved slowly. But I appreciated that we could get a couple tamales to eat right away along with a few nice drinks while we waited for our turn to order, and while we waited for our stuff to be patiently packed up. There's two entrances, the far left is where you purchase tamales to go, frozen or fresh. To the far right you can order your lunch and is pretty quick. Tamales are still good size and tasty, threw them in the microwave, nuked them for a couple minutes and we were good to go. Very tasty generous size filled with a good amount of meat.
